  • Day 2 of my extreme budget food challenge where I spend just £1 a day on food (£7 for the week).
    Today I take a packed lunch on a work road trip, do some foraging at my local park and use Olio.

      yep i too use olio quite a bit. had been on it years but didnt use it until last year when food prices became ridiculously high and utility bills & mortgage was becoming more expensive every month. im lucky there are quite a few people local to me that are olio distributors so im grateful to them for letting us have stuff to help out with the food budget, even if sometimes it is just greens or salad stuff for my guinea pigs & tortoise but sometimes get lots if great food items given away❤

    I remember when I was a kid, my brother and I were stripping a mulberry bush and shoving as much as we could in our mouths. Another kid was horrified, thinking we were going to poison ourselves.
    We looked at him like he was crazy for not knowing a mulberry bush, and then I heard my dad yelling at other parents who were helping clear the brush from the baseball field edges to not touch poison oak with their bare hands.
    That was the day I learned that my family was not your usual family. It’s been crazy to me ever since how removed people are from the origins of their food.

    Amazing - I found out Olio this week too! I’ve ‘foraged’ acrylic paints for my art, though. Brilliant app! Also, I was appalled at seeing a massive load of cherries off of a big cherry tree, strewn and smashed on the floor in a nearby street. If I think of their price per Kg….what a waste ….

    I love the Olio app. I have been a member just over 7 years, I have had so much stuff over that time. Our freezer has about 6 or 7 bread products from Olio in it. I even got a Tesco large chicken back in April, just before my birthday. It was use by that day so I cooked it when I got home, chopped it up and put it in the fridge. It did 8 of us for my birthday gathering 2 days later with salad, cold potatoes, wraps etc. I love the app because you are saving food that would be thrown away and are cutting down on food waste. We even have a vase of roses and carnations in our living room, the flowers were on Olio.
    Good luck with your week and hope you get plenty of Olio items.

Another time, from the same person, I collected a box of 6 Ginsters chicken and mushroom slices, box of 6 Ginsters sausage rolls, a pack of hot cross buns and a bag of oranges. They are regular posters, collecting regularly from Tesco and other stores and putting it all on the app.

      You can easily grow Nettles in your garden in a tub or bucket to prevent them spreading. I make tea with them every day, adding a bit of black tea or red bush. I also use them in smoothies and add them to dishes. I'm also growing lettuces, on the window sill in my kitchen (no snails), and bought some garlic bulbs to sprout. They grow outside. I use the green shoots in my food, and harvest the bulbs when the green dies off. Good on you, saving up for a house!

      @chantillyrose Месяц назад +1

      @@TheBudgetFoodie I bought Probio7 Life Yogurt Maker Machine off Amazon that makes it extremely simple to do. I tend to strain it once done as we prefer greek yoghurt. To start my own yoghurt off I bought some live (with the bacteria) yoghurt and used that as my starter. It's super simple as you just whisk a 1/4 cup of the live yoghurt with long life full fat milk and put it in the 2 x 500ml containers supplied and set it going on yoghurt mode. This makes a litre of yoghurt but as we prefer thicker yoghurt I put it in the strainer supplied and in the fridge overnight. I make yoghurt every 2 to 3 days as we love it so much. Hubby suffers with his tum and since making our own yoghurt it's gone. To make the next batch of yoghurt you just use a 1/4 cup of the last batch made and the cycle begins again. The machine I have also makes cheese but haven't tried this yet.

Also the shopmium app is really good, I’ve had lquite a bit of free items from that, and if you refer a friend you get a voucher to spend. I gave up on the Olio app ages ago, everything I applied for had already gone, some people must just sit in front of the computer or phone and grab anything as soon as it is offered ! I think it depends on where you live, some areas are better than others, also you have to consider how far you will have to travel to pick stuff up, sometimes the cost of petrol wipes out any saving. I've also tried Supermarkets own too good to go boxes but they're also not what they're cracked up to be, usually full of bread ! I hope you have better luck, but for me it was a waste of money.

    Oh my goodness your cat, i help cat protection feed the cats here, currently have one that sleeps in my greenhouse and stays in my yard, if i put the oven on he sits crying thinking i have chicken cooking, extreme weather he comes inside with his blanket and toys, but always crys to get out again. He has white paws like yours and black, at first he did scratch u, he had been ferral for a while but chose to live here sort of thing and we do look after him.

    Love your vids always watch so funny. Am a Cambridgeshire girl myself. Only thought is have you factored in the cost of fuel when driving just to pick up a free Olio cucumber? Surely it's alot more than just buying a cucumber at the shop. Also, the fuel costs of cooking all the meals as they all seem to require electric? Surely it adds up?
    Am also a cat lover my cat is called Lucky 😉

      Also, have you thought about downsizing to a one bedroom or even a bedsit or house share to save up for that deposit quicker? I lived in 1 room for years to save for a place of my own and it helped alot 😉 could never have afforded to rent a 2 bedroom place.

    Just a polite question: why do many Brits want free or very cheap stuff? Every time we visit England we find it more and more expensive but here you are showing how much you can get for free. I wonder : do you not have jobs available for the locals, so they can make enough to feed their families? Are the salaries low?
