Probably my favourite SINGLE of all time by any artist. 'Cars' and 'Complex' from 1979 had made a HUGE impression on me and I couldn't wait to hear Gary Numan's new material. I clearly remember the day I bought the single, on the week of its release. May 1980. The first time I'd bought a single BEFORE it was in the charts. As a 15 year old school boy I was ridiculed mercilessly for liking Gary Numan but I learnt at an early age it's best to take no notice of what other people think!
It's funny how now adays listening to Indie rock stations, all of this keyboard driven music is making a come back. Just had to wait 40 years. Gary Newman only started out wanting to make enough money to buy a corvette. Awesome
I remember being in a pub in East Leake, Notts, and someone put this on the dukebox. I was 12 then, in 1979. I nearly swallowed my crisp packet whole - it was a new world. I'd never heard ought like it and it changed me and my mates forever. A new age had begun. This was closely followed by Visage, Fade to Grey and Ashes to Ashes by Bowie. God, what a time.. and I feel so privileged to have been there, when it happened.
You are so lucky. I wish I was I was born in 60s like you so I could have experienced his music when it first came out. I also wish I was never a fcking yank Lol and was in the UK like all the cool and sensible people.
Mid 1979 when Are Friends Electric and autumn 79 with Cars by Numan, then Buggles ‘video killed the radio star’ and The Police was the start of the shift away from 1970s disco and punk music, into the new wave and electronic pop stuff. Summer 1980 was start of the 80s properly with Ashes to Ashes by Bowie topping the charts in August.
Just saw Gary this past Saturday. He was amazing as always but what stuck out were the number of young people at the show. His music seems to have caught on with a new generation and that makes me very happy.
Gary Numan is hands down one of the most underappreciated musicians of all time. This song is phenomenal... he's made other good stuff other than just The Pleasure Principle. A truly innovative musician who should've received more recognition for his work... although, Musicians still know and appreciate him. I hated Beck when I saw him at Riot Fest, but it was pretty dope that he at least brought Gary Numan on stage to cover Cars.
Absolutely spot on He’s a classy guy very humble. This is a great 👍 tune. He just released a brand new song and video “Intruder” it may be better than “Cars”
My Primary School teacher always played music (usually excellent classical stuff) as we trooped into Assembly every morning…. one day he played Numan😳😳🙏!! BEST TEACHER ….ever!!! Thanks
My mother helped me make this outfit, I wore it to high school in a "farm town" in S. Michigan. I was voted "Most Unique" of my graduating class, couldn't have been a better compliment.
When I was about 11, Vice City came out and it had a song called "Cars" by some dude named Gary Numan. I really liked the song and so did my buddy. So we went to his place and went on his computer and typed "Gary Numan" into Limewire. "We Are Glass" was the first one we clicked on... I became obsessed in that moment. Since then, I've listened to every album of Numan's. "We Are Glass" will forever be one of my favorites.
@@jcd1970 True. I've had some "interesting discussions" with people who love the GTA franchise over the years, which tends to color my thinking. Maybe I'll tone down my remarks a bit.
Yeah I feel you. I've been doing 80's music lately solely because of Vice City. Really glad I got an early introduction into this type of music when young.
10/10.... Gary Numan is one of the artists that defined the future of popular music... right from the first time we heard Gary in Tubeway Army back in the late 70's we all knew something had changed forever... Cars and We Are Glass are music industry anthems that will last the test of time. still just as good now as when they were 1st released.
This is when I thought he was at his best...The Telekon Era and the Tele-Tour. Way ahead of it's time. And to think the BBC banned this video for being to violent.....Wxxxxxs.

Jordan Peele's film "Us" must be inspired by elements from these, or something that inspired these. Also hear "Down In The Park", and Tubeway Army - "Are Friends Electric?" Very scary, and somehow rings true, on some level.
How damned blessed were us Brit teens who made it onto the Brit pub/club scene of the '80s? So many favourite tunes from a decade of magical music never to be repeated in my lifetime ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
I loved this style of bringing synthesizer piano sound to the forefront rather than guitars, especially by Gothic punk rockers who display snobby artistic facial expressions, but only the British can come up with musical expressions like this, I doubted Numan would be American when I heard his songs. The mood and lyrics are often spacey psychological curiosities, an escape from the same old same old conventional world we are often exposed to. He's very talented in my opinion
One of the major pioneers of the synth movement in the late '70s and into the '80s; I couldn't help thinking how radically different it was to "Cars" (and anything else at that time, thankfully!)
Outstanding song, my mate who now stays in Vancouver saw him a few weeks back, he knew that I was a Numan fan from 1979, his words were, I didn’t know how good he was was. He said that there was a lot of youngsters at the concert who came out saying how much they loved his music, tells you that the guy still has it
In these early videos he always comes across as frosty and intimidating but apparently it was just a persona to help him cope with shyness and stage fright. I wonder how many at the time knew that underneath the persona was a really genuine, warm and friendly guy.
I have choreographed to about of 8 of Gary’s songs. This is my favorite. He is an amazing performer. I brought my dance company to see a show. They are 1/3 of my age. They said it was the best show that they had ever seen. Love, love, love❤
What a song. What can I say ? Incredible - perfect Numan. Melody after melody. Great voice and the rhythm guitar on the last verse is sublime. Listen to it !!!. Classic. Hands down blows everything from the time out of the water
I can get enough of those soaring, haunting synth lines in this song. It's just perfect. They remind me of a theremin in the way that they sound like a ghost choir.

i received the same ridicule at school as a 13 year old, but i just remember thinking "you are the boring ones liking your Genesis and ABBA"
Me and my mates at school were Numanoids.Powerful force.Even the heavy metal fans respected us-1980-85
You were ahead of your time bro
and the music sounds like it could have come out just today

If there is a time machine this is it , Gary Newman instantly transports me back in time, you are part of my life ❤
You better believe it. Gary is my absolute favorite. Beautiful memories.👌🎹 🎸🎶🎤 It’s “Numan” incidentally. Thought you’d like to know.😊🙏

Because His MUSIC IS TiMELESS and EFFORTLESSLY SEAMLESS
Yes me too and I agree.
Critics gave him Hell at first .
@@martincaughlin5478 And where are those critics, now?
Gazza's had the last laugh!
It’s just uncanny how this song still sounds futuristic 40 years later.
The New Wave were The Futurists. They came and left and we'll never catch up.
Hell yeah!
The genius of Numan. Synths sounds great. We are glass...Numan is!
Your right it does I remember the day it was out on single and it still sounds Awsome today..
I. Flores S what happen to all those years ?

He may be underappreciated by the general public, but far from it by his peers.
So many artists list Gary as one of their biggest influences.
Absolutely spot on He’s a classy guy very humble. This is a great 👍 tune. He just released a brand new song and video “Intruder” it may be better than “Cars”
I agree with you 100%. He deserves so much more recognition !!
Wow, I'm not a Beck fan either, just doesn't appeal to me but I would have lived, breathed and died to see him bring legendary Gary Numan on stage.
ok
This song doesn’t get the recognition it deserves
@@tonyrobertson1085 I don’t mean when I y came out I mean now with non Numan fans
Gary has written over 400 songs so…
Gary inspired more artists than his pure record sales would suggest.
A true pioneer of modern music.
Yes he did why not too.
Pretty cool to find out he has Asperger's kinda makes you not feel so alone 🙂
One of Numans best songs imho - criminally underrated artist.
At least he gets the credit he deserves now thankfully
I never get tired of hearing this early ‘80s gem. And those visuals were some of the coolest from that era.
Definitely one of Numan’s best ever.
My Primary School teacher always played music (usually excellent classical stuff) as we trooped into Assembly every morning…. one day he played Numan😳😳🙏!!
BEST TEACHER ….ever!!! Thanks
Still fresh as it was when it came out, love it❤
I was a Tubeway Army soldier 💜 borstal memories

If Gary had emerged 5 years later he`d of ended up a global superstar, Way ahead of the rest.
He smokes every band from 1990 up.👍

It's the advantage of those born later that they have decades of good music available to them. Game quality, sometimes not so much.

My hero Gary numan fan since 1978,intruder album no1 on its release 40 years after Telekon? No other artist would come close to this
Watching Gary, again, this Sunday. I’ve been a fan since ‘79. AFE. This is in my top 10. Brilliant track. 👏👏👏
The keyboards supply an exhilarating thrill in this fabulous number. Still in my charts after all these years!

Incredible piece of art!

This is the song that changed my life in terms of music and my love for synths.
OMG. What a blast from my mis-spent youth from the 80's. What a great time to have been youthful. I'm sorry for the kids now.
Amen to that.😂
Possibly the best song he ever did. Also love the fact that he had a suit made to match the cover of the Telekon album.
I keep coming back... What a tune 😻
We are young we can break
Watch us fall
We can take some train
Down to the sea
We are glass, we are glass
We are real you can touch
Just for now
And then say
'Hey you, which way is down'
We are glass, we are glass
We are strong we run though
We have time
And to you I'm just
One of those boys
We are glass, we are glass
We are cold
We're not supposed to cry
But it's all just a thought
So here am I
We are glass, we are glass
They run fast
Impressions of the floors inviting
Stay with me, stay with me
They run past
With telephones they scream
Well would you turn all this down
Turn all this down
You are replaced you are you
And our dreams are real
And dreams are all we need
We are glass, we are glass
We…
I thought it was "They run fast impressions of the wars inviting..." but I could be wrong.

Still the King of the synth,
I just want to go back!!! This era was sensational and I don't think alot of people were ready for Gary as if he was from space! An amazing artist.
Gary's voice is so unique. No one else could sing the way he does.

It’s great seeing all these videos I’ve never seen before,
Brilliant Gary! Brings back memories when this track was released.
The first time I heard this on the radio it was like being transported to another planet in the future! Still gives me goosebumps!
I was addicted to Numan when I heard 'Friends' on TOTP in 1979, aged 15.
Followed him ever since.
This was a fantastic single.
Outstanding artist. Love the spacey sounds and beaming synth.
Nearly everything he did back then was like this. Just fantastic and a huge influence on music

This is Jean Michel Jarre with added vocals !!!
Numan could sing "Now I am an elevator" and it would still sound cool and futuristic.
A Great time to be around for music and this production is a reflection of the time from punk to synth to new romantic
I bought Telekon in probably late 80 or early 81 and was mesmerized by the whole album.
First live gig , Glasgow Apollo 1979.
Gary is a gift from God I’m not sure we deserve
