I'm going to quit smoking and spend that exact money on this. Its appealing, and I dont mind getting fucked up.
You will live it
This is by far the best comment that I relate to
Good luck, mate! I'm going to start soon!
Good luck, I'm planning on jumping and quitting smoking, but man it's gonna be tough
Mate I’m watching this video smoking a cigarette thinking the exact same thing 😂
If anyone reading this is nervous, anxious and/or scared. So was I and so we're most people. Trust me when I say this. DO IT. If you are thinking about doing it, DO IT. It is the one of the best choices I've ever made. These are not ego driven killers. BJJ practitioners are some of the most compassionate and understanding people you will ever meet. There is nothing to be scared of. Do it, you will not regret it.
Hey, I’m thinking of starting it and I’m hype but at the same time I feel nervous 😟.. I don’t know wanna look foolish even though I know it’s part of the process
Thank you
@@Stanley_954Did you end up starting?
@@shaunb7614 I did! I went for like four months but the classes were too far. I like boxing better. Ju jitsu was fun though! Very challenging but it’s awesome
@@Stanley_954 Good to hear mate cheers for the reply
I just had my first BJJ beginner lesson today and it's exactly just like this! There were people who have been there for some time and others not, like me. The structure of your class is also very similar to mine infact almost identical. Very good video👍🏽
Thank you so much for this, definitely helps me feel more comfortable and I’ll be finally signing up tomorrow.
I can't wait to hear how it goes mate. You are going to love it.Thanks for the comment.
How did it go?
During pandemic you can still take part and sign up?
Update ?
Famous last words of someone that ends up never going.
My school doesn’t have any beginner classes. It’s just “all levels classes”. I remember my first day I just jumped straight in to break falls and front/back rolls while we were doing the warm ups. Then during drills it was covering de la riva guard and sweep. I was a little overwhelmed but I’ve been going for 2 months now and it’s been pretty awesome.
That might even be better than beginner classes. You learn so much more from more experienced people than other white belts. I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying it. Thanks for the comment my friend.
To day is my first class ever of bjj, and my anxiety were taking over but this video help a lot. Thank you
I'm glad it helps mate. I'm sure you are going to love it.

I had no idea there was a Gracie academy in Istanbul where I am, I will be signing up soon I think. Thanks so much for this! Looks like so much fun.
Thank you, im 23 signing up tomorrow. First sesh this week!
I am interested in starting BJJ and this really helped me and I learned some good information! Thanks!
Signed up today! Start classes Friday. I don’t have a gi I ordered one today, we gunna kill it!
i had my first BJJ class this evening, it was fun as hell, i'm very tired, even though i'm a phisically active person they still managed to destroy me, 10/10 can't wait for the next lesson
totally wish i would have found this 30 years ago. looks like a blast.
never too late my friend give it a go.
I have a place near me, Mada. I just may.
i've been an asthmatic for most of my life, i got it after a failed surgery. a few months ago i got to a point where i didn't need to use my inhaler multiple times a day, due to being unable to do physical activities for so long i basically have no knowledge on anything physical. i'm trying to change my life around with this, i'm not trying to be more fit or attractive, i just want to be strong and have stamina.
Tip for everyone starting out. Only roll with other white belts. The only times I have ever been injured were from upper belts as a white belt
How does one 'spar' after 1 class? Like what exactly are you doing?
You are trying to submit them into a position where they would no longer be able to fight. Simulate a choke or a joint lock and just before hurting them or them passing out they tap and you go again. A bit like boxing but without the head damage.
@@chadsteel I understand what BJJ is at a high level. But that’s like someone asking a person to play chess without knowing the rules and when they ask what they’re supposed to be doing you say ‘you’re supposed to checkmate the king’.
What I mean is that if you don’t know any positions then how would you spar?
@@vantage789 you will probably just start off trying to defend and not get submitted each class you usually learn a new submission escape take down etc. It's about building your skill set session by session. So to start just try to stay alive and tap early haha
Slap, bump, try not to die. That's pretty much it. 🤙🏾
I am going for my first class today! This video really helped calm my nerves a little bit! thank you!
This video was made for you bro. Let me know how your first class goes. You are going to love it. peace and love my friend!
@@chadsteel My first class went very well! Aside from some mat burn on my knees and side of big toes everything went great. I am going back again tomorrow! thank again!
You can always tell the new guy with the shorts
its probably their first trial class. No point buying a gi if you won't like it haha.
I start training next Tuesday. Thanks for the video.
I'm gonna start tonight, I'm so excited!!!
Be humble. Roll carefully and smart. Have fun! You will love it.
BJJ is the best man! The community is so good, the atmosphere during the classes is super relaxed, it's not like Japanese martial arts where everything is super traditionnal! I do love the traditionnal aspect too, I did Karate before and the traditionnal stuff did attract me too, but at the same time, but take a look at 1:37, you will see what I mean, everybody lying down around the teacher, thats just too cool.
yeah mate it's a fantastic martial art and its a really great community.
I am looking to get into BJJ but this is where I'm confused. You roll for 3-5 minutes....with what techniques? You learn a technique and rep it out but....how are you defending, transitioning, etc? You don't know anything. This is where I am confused as to how a beginner can even begin to roll if he only knows 1 or 2 very basic locks. What is the other guy doing, just 1 untrained guy going for a submission and the other untrained guy struggling how an untrained person would struggle?
First off definitely go do a free trial class I think you would love it. You roll for 3-5 minutes at the end of class. The first 30-45 mins is spent learning submissions, escapes, transitions, takedowns and more. If it's your first class you might only know one thing that you just learned. If you have done 10 classes maybe you have 10 things you can use. After 100 classes you have 100 techniques. Much like a chef you need to learn one recipe at a time and build from there. The more you train the more you will learn. I love it because it is the thinking mans martial art. The only way to really experience this is to do it. I hope this helps mate.
In my opinion people feel more confident & keen to learn in grappling arts like BJJ, Judo due to the presence of adult beginners unlike in TKD & Karate where newbie adults feel a bit shy due to alot of kids black belt holders.
yeah i feel the same way. having lots of adult beginners made me feel more comfortable about starting training in my late 20s
I'm starting my first class today thankful that I found this video
awesome dude you are going to love it
How is it 6 months later?
@@sickdickop6118 good
@@sickdickop6118 it started off bad because I'm about 6ft and weigh around 150 but because of my age I had to train with small kids and learn the same techniques but now I'm in the adult class and am learning a lot more

My friend has asked me to go to a BJJ beginner class with him. I have massive anxiety about this because my cardio is practically non existent. I’m overweight (but not massively, I’m skinny fat verging on fat lol) and have never been able to run/ do any exercise above standard cycling / walking. I have always felt in my head that my heart etc can’t handle doing running or something strenuous like that. It’s probably more something I’ve built up in my head but It worries me. Watching this I’ll be honest I feel like I’d really struggle just doing the warm up let alone the actual rolling and drills etc which look exhausting. I’m absolutely convinced I’d be gasping for breath after the warm up and panic. Any advice would be massively appreciated here. I know people always say just do it but is there a limit to that? Should I sort my cardio first?
Just completed my first Jiu Jistu class and it was awesome,
Might be a odd question but do u have to take clothes or shirt off at all like to to change into uniform or anything ? I'm overweight and don't feel comfortable with that it's holding me back but if we can just where ours clothes and put the gee on over it's okay . I wanna sign up soon
Dont worry about that,Nobody cares about Ur Looks in class,we all Just there for the Roll !
I am not sure about every studio because they all have different rules but all the ones I have been to alow clothes under the gi, and some classes don't even use gi's but it would be a good question to ask when looking to join a stodio
Second best cardio maybe. Wrestling is still the best cardio over this. But great video. Informative
What if you don't have the stamina to go through the training?
No one is going to look down on you for trying. You do the best you can.Keep turning up and improving each time.
@@chadsteel thx for the kind words
Unless you are genuinely injured you should never sit out of randori/ sparring. People that do will not progress
Yes
so I do MMA and I've done striking my whole life, I'm a black belt in Taekwondo, and I've been doing MMA for the past two years, I have done jujitsu before (one class ages ago) and I did one yesterday and I loved it! I don't know why I didn't love it ages ago but I had so much fun and I'm a very quick learner so it's very helpful for BJJ. For the second class I've ever been to we were doing some advanced things since it wasn't actually a beginners class but I still managed to do everything almost first shot, I impressed my trainer a lot because every time he came over to check on how I'm going I saw his eyes widen in shock that I was doing it almost perfectly lol. I did mess up a bunch but I pretty much got all the holds and stuff down and I loved the feeling that I was good at something since I haven't felt that in a long time and it was so chill and I cant wait till the next class.
is bjj a good martial art for mma and for self defense?
Personally I think it is one of the best martial arts for mma and self defence. If you end up on the ground which many fights do. The person who knows bjj vs the person who does not. Will win everytime. Give it a go I'm sure you will love it.
Thanks for the video. IS THIS SPORT SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50 OR ONLY FOR YOUNG PERSONS
"... one of new favourite things in the world" haha
it was haha. I'm dying to get back
Yea I can’t do the conditioning, looks like a lot of fun tho
I’m not very flexible should I try this like the most I can do is touch my toes legs straight out and how is the culture of this martial arts and injuries.
I can only touch my toes if i bend my legs a bit and ive been doing bjj for about 2 years so i say go for it
I feel absolutely intimidated after wathcing this - I haven't done many sports or participated in any sort of martial art and I've never had any form of fight in my life - I want to break through and do this but I really struggle with the beginner embarassment.
My friend. There is nothing to be embarassed about we all have to start somewhere. If you are humble and friendly. People will line up to train and teach with you. Enjoy it mate you will love it.
signed up for my first class tomorrow beyond nervous
This was a very helpful video signing up now!
awesome yo will love it
im 5'10" and 250lbs is that to heave to join some classes?
Not at all, Bjj has all types of weights and abilities. Head down to a local gym and give it a taster session, some people might not want to roll of they are 130 lb but you will definitely find people at that class to go with :)
excited to begin this!
You will love it.
Next Tuesday I turn 35, and next Friday I take my First Martial Arts/BJJ Class. I am not entirely out of shape, but I am definitely not IN shape. I am excited because this is something that I have been interested in and wanted to try for a long time. I have watched a lot of videos on RUclips and read a lot of articles and blog posts about what to expect. But I am still nervous being older starting out. I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone here who was an older beginner, and what their experience was like. Or if anyone has any advice or things that I should know before going in. Thanks in advance.
Hey mate. Don’t worry. Tap early and tap often. Just come in there with a happy positive attitude and the people will take care of you. Bjj people are the nicest people you can meet. There are plenty of older guys at my gym and 35 isn’t even old anyway. Enjoy my friend you will be fine 🙏😁
Make sure you go slow you don’t get injured and be humble. You can’t go wrong
35 isn't old; a guy in his 50s just started at my spot a couple weeks ago. I know a bunch of people who started in their upper 30s to low 40s. Just be ready to tap early, tap often, as tapping keeps you safe. Stay consistent and the conditioning will come with the continued effort, and it won't even feel like effort because you will be enjoying it.
hey Alex, how's it going? do you train?
@Oliver Benton I do when I am able! My schedule has been really prohibitive lately, but hoping to get more active by April. My son is doing Jr. BJJ classes right now, and my wife is starting when I go back :)
I have some lower disc degeneration in my lower back which I see a chiro for which has improved and I manage. Would BJJ be an art I could still participate in? Note I am currently training in American Kenpo. Thanks
I am in no way qualified to say if you are going to be safe training jiu jitsu. But for someone with a healthy strong back I do find it puts a lot of pressure on my back with the movements and sparring. I'd say give it a go but be very careful as it's definitely a more risky exercise to be doing if you have back problems.
@@chadsteel Thanks! I guess any activity with a back injury takes on some form of risk. You are right suggesting to give it a go. Guess thats what trial lessons are for. Just looking to expand my knowledge as all my MA training to date has been stand up, with no ground exposure.
This is cool and friendly. I want to discover martial arts myself and overcome fear first.
Do you have to compete ?
No you don't have to do anything you want. Sparring at the end is just practicing as hard or as soft as you want. with your partner.
I had my first class today. Every muscle in my body is sore....
Your body will adapt to it over time. But yeah it's going to hurt a bit at first. Just keep it humble and tap early. Enjoy my friend.
@@chadsteel
I enjoyed it very much.
Is the sparring only the little bit that y’all did or do y’all ever go close to actual fighting because how do you put what you’ve learned into use
I want to start but im scared. I have nothing better to do on the summer holidays and im bored as hell, bht im scared to go up against more professional people and like mess up and stuff yk
I have a bad gag reflex. Is it something to worry about when starting training? Sometimes just a small touch on my neck or thinking about being chocked activates it.
What’s the best martial art for striking and like takedown/submissions, or would that be from just different kinds of martial arts.
In my opinion. I like boxing and kickboxing for striking. Take downs would be wrestling and a bit of judo. The best for submissions would be bjj. Based on my limited experience. But try it all and see what works for you. I'm just a huge bjj fan.
MMA involves all 3 - however the very best often have backgrounds in boxing, kickboxing, judo, jujitsu, certain forms of karate, Muay Thai, and wrestling (maybe some Taekwondo as well). Tbh, boxing, judo, and wresting have a little bit more risk than the others - with pretty much every combat sport having some danger. Therefore, if you wanna do a strike sport I would suggest going for Muay Thai because it’s widely considered the best - however - note that at high-levels you’ll burn a lot of calories so you’ll have to work to not degrade your lean muscle. Finally, choose whether you’ll go competitive or not - although sparring here and there is normal - think hard before going full comp.
I’m starting from Thursday ❤❤❤❤
I’m 17 and I’m about to join thank for the advice
You're welcome bro. I hope you enjoy it!
It's a frank question. How do you get the attacker to the ground? He has to 'agree' to be lie down first?
Newbie to the whole martial arts stuff - Looking for a self-defence class against bigger sized opponents.
Good question; in most fights or altercations you'd start from a standing position and avoid going to the ground as long as possible (falling down hurts and it's very difficult to defend against other people standing around you while you're rolling around with one of them); after a take-down, you're probably both on the ground. Apparently in many of these BJJ classes (correct me if I'm wrong!) they just sit down on the ground and climb on top of each other to practise locks and chokes
I remember my first day my dad had me rolling with cops
are there any schools that spar from standing? i want to learn some amount of wrestling. i know it's less safe but i'm still not so old that i'm too scared to try.
Can anyone join at any time. I'm not in shape at all. Should I condition before starting or just jump in
You have to be in shape. If your of breath while rest of class is learning your wasting money. This is beginner martial arts not beginner fitness
There isn't really a perfect way to get in shape for jiujitsu besides jiujitsu it seems, but it definitely would help to be in otherwise good shape before starting. If not, then you will get in shape from the classes themselves over time.
Do you get the costume when signing up ?
most gyms will have a gi if you sign up. But you will need to pay for it. I bought mine online before I started.
Bjj will make you lose weight so you're fine
Looks like a blast
It's a lot of fun
Do you have breakfalls practice in Bjj or jui jitsu in general?? Thanks for a nice vid.
Yes
Yes
I’m 13 and I like mma, ufc, submissions should I do it?
What do you think?
iam from nepal what is the monthly cost of bjj
It's going to be different place to place. I live near London and it costs me 80£ per month. 2 sessions per week or 8 classes per month. You can pay more for more classes and access to kickboxing etc. I hope that helps mate. Most places usually offer a free trial class so try to take advantage of that.
Hmm... looks like there's very little standing game. The ground game is of course important but I can't be the only one that doesn't want to sit on their ass all session with no practice of takedowns. Do you ever practice traditional takedowns via throws or sweeps?
Because this is a beginner class there isn't much standing game. I have done a few advance classes and they usually start with take downs and then move into ground work. I'm quite happy with this as I would much rather be thrown in a controlled way by a more experienced person than a newbie.
I jus am scared of who I’ll pair up with💀
If it's your first time the instructor will most likely put you with a friendly more experienced partner who can take better care of you. You don't have anything to worry about
It's kinda strange there's no this japanese ritual, no bows and stuff like this even if you guys are wearing traditional japanese training outfits. I wonder how BJJ class in Japan looks like. :)
This isn’t Japanese? It’s Brazilian, hence the B in BJJ

no one is going to look at you funny. Everyone was a begginer once and everyone is there to get better and improve.
I’m done with taekwondo this looks way better I’ll try it once taekwondo is done/credit runs out.
Flaming it’s not that simple really like the instructors have a big roll in how it is so good dojo good fun no guarantee on belts for when you’ll get them is a good sign taekwondo is fun mostly personally I was just bad at patterns search up tiger 1 white belt to see what patterns are also it’s not the best for self defence(still good) but it helps and is great for fitness so I’d say give it a go normally they’ll offer one free lesson so try it and tell me how it went. The only reason for first comment was because I’ve done no sparring over the year which was annoying but covid caused it.
Flaming yea very odd no free trial the only real negative about bjj is if your fighting 2 people. apart from that it’s way better then taekwondo for self defence I’m also going to start bjj in a few weeks let me know how it went.
2:58 is there a reason you’re shaking either your left
Im 19 and considering it haha I already go to the gym but I want to learn a martial art too but one question is there always a beginner class or is that option not always offered?
Is everyone shaking with their left hands?
I’m only twelve turning 13 so I will be looking for the right places anything u recommend
Nice start lifting weights also to get stronger and more athletic
Kendrick Burks ok thx
It all depends on what you enjoy more. To put on more muscle mass, I recommend lifting weights, but if you want to get leaner, I would recommend calisthenics. If you like both, you can always combine the two 😃

I have a gracie academy where I live and I am interested, but I have to ask is it mandatory to bow down in jiu jitsu?
because I am Muslim and I bow down to no man
Im a muslim too but in jiu jitsu you both bow down in respect for each other not only one bowing down for another one who thinks he is superior . Bowing down in jiu jitsu is just like saying salamou alaykom in our religion so respect them by respecting their culture
We have a brief bow at the start and end of the class. But it doesn't seem compulsory. I'm sure most schools wouldn't force you to do it if you asked them politely. Just check before you start training.
Too sexual for me i prefer muay thai
Will it be hard to a person who have a bad suppleness😂
I think it can be difficult but it shouldn't stop you from trying it, getting better and getting more flexibile. I traing with some really big guys who can't even touch their toes. The best thing that flexibility gives you is less chance of injury and you are able to get into and out of situations more fluidly. Definitely go and try it though because it is an amazing sport!
Hi I'm 43 and have mild fibromyalgia. Basically, this means I have no suppleness and get injuried easier than most. I started training Jiu Jitsu a few months ago. If you are similar to me, I would recommend starting by only training once a week to give you a chance to recover. When your suppleness increases after maybe 6 weeks you could try twice a week an so on.
Also, it is also a good idea to just get private lessons for your first 8 lessons. This will allow the instructor to tailor the class around your weaknesses. After several months you should have no problem with intense regular training. Just start off easy. Avoid moves that strain you too much. With time you will be able for them.
Wear ear pro. Don't disfigure yourself over a hobby....
