I similarly picked up ED Odyssey in the last week and decided to play it, because I’ve heard a lot of good things. First impressions are “wow this thing is so polished, bug free and feels so much more complete”. The other thing is the game feels huge and daunting, but I suppose so does Star Citizen to noobs as well. I’m in the very early stages, but liking what I see so far, and intend to play it quite a lot. ED players tend to forget what they have, it’s still by far the most complete space sim game we have.

@@Libertas_P77 I'm glad you feel like Odyssey is polished and bug-free. You should definitely enjoy it if you do. I think it feels silly. I don't like bullet sponge gameplay myself. I also don't like teleporting from my ship to the ground and pretending that is supposed to be a neil Armstrong moment. Frontier failed in my eyes when they said they were no longer going to do ship interiors and when they made multi-crew a complete joke. In Star
citizen you can walk into a Friends ship, climb in a turret, and have that millennium falcon moment many people were dreaming of. Frontier told us that it's just not going to happen because people don't really want that. And I'm sure some people don't. I'm one of the people that do.

I know a lot of people complain about not having space legs, lifeless planets, grindy asf...blah, blah, blah... but...as someone who played the original Elite way back in the olden days (1980's) on an old Amstrad CPC 464, where most of the game took place in your imagination from a bunch of lists, I can say with all certainty that I absolutely love this 30th anniversary version of the game and its DLC, and it is more than I imagined it to be all those years ago...with the original game now hitting its 40th year, this year.
I too have only recently just started playing elite dangerous odyssey in the last week or so after having it sitting in my steam library for the last few years, for fear of it falling short of the awe and wonder I experienced playing the original game as a kid, and have played many space games looking for that same awe and amazement I felt back then, I am happy to have taken the plunge into the elite dangerous life and will continue to live it, until I no longer am.

Millions of credits from bounty hunting and exploration. Federal Corvettes earned on both accounts. Elite status in exploration on both accounts. I guess you can see I loved exploration. I bought a gaming PC specifically for VR in this game. It was amazing dogfighting and looking over your shoulder to see incoming ships. I miss that the most. Nice video, and I really love that you cut boring parts. If you are going to explore E:D, here is unsolicited advice how to truly enjoy it: on foot missions. Choose 4-5 of them for a start till you get the ropes, and pick either reputation or material rewards, not always the money. While doing those missions, look for signal sources and exobiology. Exobiology is a great way to earn money, and if you bring SRV, you could pick some raw materials; you will need them later. And SRV will greatly help when other interested parties shows up and you end in heated argument on who gets the loot.
The common problem most people, including me, was to grind for money in order to get bigger and bigger ship. And after 2 days of combat, I would get one of them: then what? It becomes boring, feels too easy. But missions forces you to try plenty of different gameplay loops, you get familiar with things you can do, and without easy money, you actually do get familiar with each ship. And as you play, you get to see some truly amazing places just by random. With new supercruise-overcharge, doing all this became much more interesting.
I would say that FD really nailed it with Odyssey, but they should have explained it much better. Even after so many updates, plenty of things are too confusing: the game became too big and it should really have some sort of advisor like other games.

For SC players wondering why ED won't have ship interiors there is one simple reason - interior spaces that can be configured however you want. An Imperial Cutter has 12 optional bays ranging from size 1 to 8 with each step doubling the size of it and you can install modules that don't take up the entire space (this doesn't even count weapons or ship primary systems. I have 3 Cutters, one for combat, one for mining and one for cargo transport. The ship is just under 200m long, a span of 100m and is 33m tall.
The combat Cutter has Shields, internal shield boosters, internal armor and a dual fighter bay (these are remote piloted).
The mining Cutter has shields (smaller than the combat one), cargo and limpet controllers (programs and controls multi-purpose drones).
The cargo Cutter has shields (same size as the mining cutter), a single fighter bay and the rest is cargo bays. This ship can easily be converted to carry passengers by replacing the cargo bays with passenger cabins (any mix of economy, business or luxury).
While they could just model the main crew cabin there is also access to SRV bays which you can carry multiple. Also some ships have the ship entrance at the back of the ship not the front. Setting up interiors so you could access the various bays within a ship with all of the different module configurations would be a major hassle and personally I would rather they work on other content.

    • @francescomisuraca6697
      @francescomisuraca6697 3 месяца назад +3

I would say that modularity of the ships is not really the problem. The true issue for me is in the architecture of the game. The game works with "instances". Each time you make something like enter the atmosfere of a planet, or jump/quit from iperspace etc... they have to syncronize everyone into an instance in order to then load the content of that instance (like other ship, an event, a targoid, etc...). In my opinion we do not have true space legs because of this. They promised ship interiors but then faced the reality that the entire game must be build from scratch in order to allow a true space leg experience with seamless (no loading) gameplay. Otherwise you would be forced to have a loading (as now) every time you jump, land, exit the ship etc...
Star Citizen do not have instances and has full "space leg" experience, because they planned everything out from the start of the project and the architecture of the game has been developed around this.
To see something similar to SC in elite, it would probably take them a couple of years to rewrite everything. I would not be suprised if they have already started to do it years ago after releasing the first batch of the odissey season pass (if they really believe on the project).

@@francescomisuraca6697 both. They wasted 12 years of development and failed to deliver so many kickstarter features they pitched. It's no wonder they are in financial limbo and have resorted to ship sales. And to date, they still have no roadmap or any coherent vision for the game or a plan to address the mountains of tech debt. The game is basically broken from a balancing standpoint ever since engineering. Multicrew has been broken for years as well. every feature they cook is basic if it works or broken and they simply sert out to tick a checkbox without any plans to evolve anthing once released. Now they are finally saying they will rebalance engineering and rework power play but that's 12 years into the game while they have ignored the player base telling them to do just that for half a decade. IMO it is all too little too late with consoles basically dead and player numbers from steam charts basically showing no real upwards trend after odyssey's absolute disaster.

@@francescomisuraca6697 No-one can say for sure. Interiors were mentioned/promised back in the kickstarter days. Sure Odyssey didn't come with ship interiors but Frontier never announced it would and actually specifically stated it wouldn't when asked multiple times. As far as planning goes, the first thing you would need for interiors is to have an avatar to run through the interior, so it could be very reasonably said that implementing onfoot capabilities is a large step towards ship interiors and that a decent portion of the necessary rewrite/development to make it happen has already occurred. Fleet Carriers have interiors, stations etc.. They aren't full fleshed out yet, I guess you could say they're at t0 implementation? We will see what the future brings but I think most Elite players are looking forward more to gas giants/full-atmospheric planets. I am also a supporter of getting ship interiors but rather trying to do all things at once and getting nowhere in 12 years..... Frontier have steadily added to the game and revised core mechanics at appropriate stages. I think PowerPlay V2 is a good example of that.

Glad you tried it. Never let anyone sour you from a game just because they don't like it. If you like ED then play ED. If you like SC then play SC. There is no right or wrong answer here. ED is a vast game with many many activities to enjoy. I've been playing it for about 5 years, accumulated over 3000 hours of gameplay and have not grown tired of it as yet. I go through periods (mostly in the summer) where I don't play for months but I always come back to it. I have billions of credits in my bank, an impressive stable of ships and a fleet carrier. The content is updated on a fairly regular basis and the live universe is kept interesting. I like the sandbox aspect of the game where you can pretty much do whatever you want. ED's ship flight and combat in VR is spectacular. I echo your sentiment about open play. I prefer solo or player groups (such as the AntiXeno Initiave - AXI - group) that have rules of conduct that prohibit ganking and other such behaviour. I bought and tried SC. It's a beautiful looking game but it runs like ass on my mid-high spec system. It feels unfinished and is plagued with scope creep. I boot it up every now and then to see if it's playable on a long term basis but compared to ED it's just not there yet. The lack of VR in SC is a huge turn off for me as well. Ship's interiors would be nice in ED. Full VR on foot would be nice but given the experience with in ship VR, the completeness of the game and the continuing support from the F-Dev I'm more than happy.

Star Citizen is an in-progress ultimate blue sky vision of what the ‘dream space sim game’ might be some day, with unbridled ambition. What is there, it can be quite extraordinary at times. But it’s not a proper game, not even close. With Elite, we have a mature, full space sim game now and have for years. It’s a great shame Frontier Dev failed to invest in it, but for players like myself it’s still great to dip into it and contrast it to Star Citizen as a long term backer there. I installed it a week or so back and am enjoying myself so far, even if I do feel overwhelmed and somewhat unsure what to do now I’ve completed the training.

Hey OneNut. Long time SC fan that is an ED refugee.
It is a rite of passage to land in ED manually and, if you are feeling up for a solid challenge, to land manually with Flight Assist Off and station rotational assist disabled for that true Newtonian physics experience.
If you have VR (not sure if you were just using a Tobii/Track IR), Elite is also one of the best VR experiences to this day, and I dream of SC one day having the same. o7

The thing with Elite and Star Citizen - They are hugely different.
Keep in mind that Elite was a Space Flight Simulation game beforehand. A lot of stuff has been released not because Frontier wanted it but because player cried "We need ground Combat".
Ground gameplay, in my opinion isnt that great in Elite although sometimes really fun and absolutely challenging.
What I love about Elite is how amazing the sound design is and all the small system they put in.
Also, there is early game, mid game and late game (with late game an amazing gameplay loop is happening) and they finally came back to Elite to develop it further. F-Dev did a lot of questionable things with it (And they do so in some extend, still) but what is there is absolutely amazing.
I love both games . Elite and Star Citizen (in fact have star citizen open right now lol) but Elite is (at least for me) the better flighting part of space and Star Citizen the more ground combat king.
While I like to go to the hangar and get my ship I also think it's just a time destroyer.
Also, while Elite is content complete, Star Citizen is not. In Elite you have SO MUCH to do that it gets overwhelming very fast. And in Star Citizen it gets overwhelming too fast because the mission are bugged or some other sh...
When Star Citizen gets depth that Elite has, with progress and such - And I hope it will - Then Star Citizen may replace Elite. But its a looong time until that happenes (Sadly)
One tip if you try Elite for further - Beware of the threat levels on missions. These are VERY Important.

I was end stage of ED on Xbox. Fleet Carrier, Multiple of every ship, every engineer, every Military rank. Loved it but dam that grind mechanic. Like ED's normal gameplay, to get materials, is menu logging to reset farming areas lol. Then Xbox got abandoned by FDev, I had jumped to a PC when I saw the writing on the wall and was before they offered the service to move everything across. I then started on Star Citizen, its had me hooked ever since. I did use FDev's support service to melt everything from Xbox account and give me a in game cash equivalent for the start in PC ED Odyssey (that was the servcie they offered before the full cross over of accounts). That was quite funny, left the starter system in a Sidewinder, jumped to nearest Fleet Carrier system and bought one. Jumped that to the system I Sola Prospect (Station has every ship and module) to purchase and A grade every ship that wasn't behind a Military rank wall. I then unlocked several engineers and then hit the grind wall and haven't been back. I gotta say your vid has got me to download it again. There was a reason i spent soooo many hours in it in the first place.

This is common mistake most of us made. But if you choose material rewards, you can make any ship you want within few hours. FDev should have explained that in the game because we humans by default look only for money reward. It is something we are familiar with in everyday life, materials are not. And then players quickly buy tons of ships, sitting idle in FC, complaining about the "grind".

Nice video, I always enjoy watching people's first experiences in this game (which I've been playing for 10 years now). I'm curious to know which "horror stories" you've heard about Elite as 90% of them are greatly exaggerated, refer to things (like the Odyssey launch) which have long since been fixed, or refer to personal issues like console cancellation, rare ganking incidents, or so-called "promises" which Frontier have failed to fulfil. For me, although it has certainly had its issues, Elite: Dangerous continues to be the best video game I’ve ever played.

Disclaimer: I never played the Odyssey expansion. But i did play for about four or five years before that.
Elite has the exact opposite problem of Star Citizen. It's vast and there is literally trillions of planets to visit, but all the game loops in Elite are very bare bones. Cargo is just a thing on your screen that says cargo. Passenger missions is just a thing on your screen that you have passengers. Just inventory on a sheet. Exploration is kinda cool and it's challenging to push so far. Visited Sagittarius A* three times (black holes in this case game are simultaneously cool and meh, you'll see), and went to Beagle Point, the absolute furthest point in the Galaxy from Earth when the game launched, so it became like a marathon target for every explorer in the game. But again ... exploration is arriving at a system and scanning the planets at a distance. If you get close, you realize all the planets you can land at are lifeless rocks with no real atmosphere. There's no real interactivity. And I don't get me started on the absolute joke that is multicrew :/
I loved the hyperdrive effect when using the FSD to jump to another system. Mind you, all these frame shift drive animations you see are loading screens. There's no server meshing in this game ;)
So I enjoyed my time, loved my ships, and got all the big ships, fully engineered. But I got jaded by the grind. It's pretty bad. When you buy a ship, you're not just grinding more for better gear. No no, then's engineering which is a big grind. And then further upgrading parts with alien tech. In SC, you guy the ship, upgrade those parts of the ship you feel are most essential, like the QD, and that's it. Move on to what you want next.
Now that being said, we also have to recognize that Frontier had nowhere close to the budget that Star Citizen got. But it still sucks when they made the same promises that CIG made in terms of the scope of the game, but ended up delivering bare bone shells of all game loops. Except space combat. Space combat in Elite was quite enjoyable, though I'm still frustrated I could never just get out of my seat and walk around my ship. That was what made me quit.

    • @JefferyAClark
      @JefferyAClark 3 месяца назад +2

I agree with everything you said. E:D has a different philosophy of game design. Star Citizen is about 100% realism (as close as they can get it). E:D is a more "arcade-y" type gameplay with, as you said, bare bones secondary gameplay beyond flying the ship. It's a nice flight sim for sure, with some limited gameplay loops, but Star Citizen just blows it out of the water in vision and implementation. It's the difference between F-Dev saying "good enough" and Chris Roberts always asking "Can this be better?"

I loved Ellie Dangerous before Odyssey, but unfortunately the multiplayer aspect of it was dysfunctional at best. I'm not sure if they fixed flying in wings or how fps is together, but from what I can tell it's not even comparable to Start Citizen. Before Odyssey, ED used to be unique and magical in a somber way, a game where I regularly went from xenophobia whenever too many solid blips showed on my radar, to utterly alone and worriedly watching my fuel consumption. The feeling when you realized you messed up in that game was rough. But something about the tone of it changed slightly and now I don't get these feelings at all. However, Star Citizen has both given some of the feelings I had in this game, an unrivaled multiplayer experience comparable to Worlds Adrift, and so much more. I mean, Elite Dangerous is crazy good in many ways, and just the fact that it's a representation of the entire Milky Way Galaxy to the best of our knowledge, ready to be explored, the soundscape (at least pre Odyssey) is breathtaking, there's a huge skill curve on the completely optional flight mode FAOff, there's tons of endgame stuff from engineering to Targoids, and if you like the added excitement of looking over your shoulder, public servers are for you. I'd give ED an 8/10 for sure, but when it's being named next to SC, I can't hold back the rant about how I'll never play ED again as long as SC is playable

you can play in open for the most part. It's basically a ghost town. I"m pretty sure another player has never even taken a shot at me in over 1k hours. This is 3 weeks old but once you leave the starter system and get locked out, just book it about 100 light years away and stay away from around the starter area and it'll be rare if at all you get ganked. Solo or private for material farming definitely.

This is an excellent game, but the criticisms from hardcore players stems from the fact it has so much more potential that has been unrealized over the past decade. Loved this game when I first played it on a commodore 64? (1989 or 1990). Polygon times. Haven't seen it since till I got Odyssey about 4 months ago. Obviously it's changed, but it's still essentially the same game. It's still epic. I get how they haven't strayed from what's a bonefide classic. Hate it? Love it? I think anyone that's played it to, say Elite in any profession, has both loved and hated it. Still, it's a classic game and not just in it's genre.
Have to say I'm dead curious to try SC. Looks amazing. Is it more jump in and pew pew than Elite? Let's face it Elite basically annihilates newcomers with the sheer 'what do you mean you want to be told what to do next...it's the galaxy...nobody knows wtf is going on and everybody wants to kill you' -ness of it.

Imagine flying into the slot at max speed, max power to engines, trying not to crash into the wall on the far side, or going full afterburner on departure and flying out of the station like a bullet. Much more entertaining than just sitting and watching your autopilot barely crawling in. LOL.

horror story can be told about engineer grind and manufactured materials (both horizon and odyssey), i can accept that. anything else is just exaggeration.
what is your desire to do in this game its what will define your experience a lot. exploration, trade, mining, piracy, mercenary, on foot ops, anti xeno, power play, any combination of those or as me all combined on day to day mood.
last few months anti xeno operations are the 99% of majority of players daily activity. payouts are unfortunately decreased, but still most fun way to obtain large amounts of credits in combination with power play (boring task, huge gain). so to get to the carrier ownership, honestly you will need week of spire sites, depending of time spent playing and number of people involved. before latest nerf, you could obtain your own carrier in a single day on spire site, now it will take you a bit more and power play to double it. again, that is the best and fastest fun way to do so.
