Hey everyone, as a few people have mentioned, it would seem that induction hobs pulse rather than provide a low watt option... Its annoying as i genuinely thought id found a low watt option for the van.
For clarification, it does work with the EcoFlow River pro, delta 2 and delta max with no issues. It has been reported that due to the pulsing the unit does it doesnt work well or at all on batteries that dont have a boost function (ie the jackery)
    Hope this clears things up..
Ill do an updated video in the near future
    Have an ace week everyone

Thanks for clearing this up I been scratching my head as just bought low watt induction for my bluetti EB55 700 wat and trips it at low setting.Guess I need the riverflow you have. Do you have a link

    • @Mitchamidilly

Just for info. I recently bought the same model and the minimum wattage on my Bluetti AC200L shows 1500w (pulsing even at minimum setting) so the design might have changed given you mention 750w draw.
I'm now deciding if I'm going to keep as I bought two and I don't like the idea of pulsing my inverter at loads over the maximum rated even though it would probably cope.
The instructions even state... 'ideal for operating the unit in locations where there is a low wattage power supply'
This is misleading and care should be taken before buying.

I have one in my VW, great for cooking messy stuff like fried eggs and bacon outside of the van, less cleaning up and no lingering odours. Also not effected by the wind, like some gas cookers. Greetings from NZ👍

This video is brilliant as usual . I'm just about to go down the same route with induction . I was gutted when I realised that I couldn't use my beloved ridgemonkey, until i discovered there is such a thing as induction hob adapters . Its basically a metal disc you place between your induction hob and any non conducive pan .

How about this for a comparison test. Plug your van in as you would on campsites, then fill your electric kettle, your gas hob kettle and a pan with a lid, putting the same amount of water in each and the see which boils the fastest. I'm going with the induction hob on full power. Great vid as always.

Great review! (apart from the link obscuring the final figures...😉)
I find it amazing that we can buy induction hobs for camping / van or whatever. Safe, efficient and all you need are ferrous based pans or adaptor rings (I presume with these adaptors that as well as our wonderful ridge monkeys we can also use the Omnia oven...anyone confirm this?)
Anyway, as a high end kitchen designer (min £75K + ) I am used to specifying £2 to 3K Miele or Gaggenau models and to have exactly the same technology in the van is just phenomenal. I know it's not new. We've been doing them for years but even so...
You are right re future builds. I would go twin induction, powered by a decent power bank, solar charged or hook up. Then have a small portable gas stove as back up, almost the mirror image of what most of us have with our twin gas etc
I've seen the (camping) future and it's not garlic bread it's my Vango induction!

I have this exact model -purchased for switchable low power 300w,600w etc. but that’s not the way it works! Beware. The induction pulses on and off at full power to achieve the perceived watts setting. Hence it will trip low amp EHU or inverters less than probably about 2kva.

This hob doesn't work with a 1100watt krieger inverter.
Soon as you plug this in you get a error beeping from the inverter.
Hob Won't even switch on or fan doesn't even switch on start up.
Never even had time to turn the power down on the hob.
From the default settings on the hob.
Inverter working fine with my 750watt kettle and slow cooker.

interesting, we have been using one for years in our van. things to consider, better to use them outside the van ( not in the rain etc) as you can make sure it level, the pans slide off. also fat splatter and steam etc doesn't damage the inside of your van. from our testing ,for boiling water they are not any better ( energy usage) than a small kettle.

I'm thinking of getting a portable induction cooker for making quick meals in the field hunting and fishing in my truck bed tailgate (since it has a plastic liner in it). I've heard of people using a silicone mat to protect the glass top. I've also heard of people buying steel plates to basically heat incompatible pots and pans. Have you tried any of this?

    • @Yorkshirepoptopadventures

Hey buddy, I've definitely used a steel plate so that I can use my other pans and it hasn't been that great. Pans that are made for the induction hob are way better. I find the steel plate sometimes loses connection and gets super hot! Having said that, it could just be a rubbish steel plate.
Not used a silicon mat, and the glass has been OK so far bud.

The Ecoflow does not run 1800 watt devices at 1800 watt. Using x-boost* it will run these devices at 600 watt!
I run an ikea tillreda portable induction hub on my R600 pro. Do need to turn on x-boost and use only the like 3 lowest settings, but it will work. I would recommend the new Delta 2 for this kind of cooking however.
Must admit, it is nice to turn it down to 300 watt, but make sure it actually does so...
    * X-boost uses the principle of watts = amps times volts. The device that is using electricity controlls the amps. The device that is delivering the electricity, the Ecoflow in this case, controls the voltage. In x-boost mode it lowers the voltage from 220 down to ...... low enough so that the device using electricity is happy with the amps it is getting.
Whether that device can function with the lower voltage...... that remains to be seen.
When using x-boost attach only one device, preferable one that is just heating, so no computers inside

Even on the lowest setting (200w iirc) it would still draw 1050w (measured), just in shorter 'blips' making it unusable on my 800w inverter.

This is how induction hobs work, high power in pulses. When you select a lower wattage all that happens is that the on/off pulsing changes to longer delays between pulses. Vango sell an 800w induction hob specifically designed for camping. Vango Sizzle is what you want.

Hi Colin. Can this be run off an electric hookup when on site?

  • @brianbailey4565
    @brianbailey4565 Год назад

An induction hob is not variable power, I have a simular hob that goes from 200W to 2000W, so I have done some atctual measurements as what he is saying is incorrect. The power drawn from 1200 to 2000W is as indicated, but below this at 1000W down to 200W my unit pulses the power off and on. At 1000W continuously on then 800W on for 4 seconds then off for a second the off time getting longer as the lower settings are selected. Even at 200W if using an inverter it must be capable of 1000W output as it will pulse on and off.
Induction hobs work by generating very high frequency magnetic field to induce eddy currents in the bottom of the pan that is why they must contain ferous to work so testing with magnet is a good way to see if they are suitable.

If you're into IH cooking then perhaps the ZWilling/Demeyere ControlInduc shall prove appealing as it starts regulating temperature around 230 °C, as i recall, and stops heating near 250 °C - hence preventing over-heating independently of the cooktop in selected applications.

Unfortunately this video creator doesn't understand how induction cooktops work, and the ramifications of how they operate.
He repeatedly incorrectly says that the cooktop will work on all sorts of low power setups because "the minimum power level is 300W".
This is wrong, and will lead people up the garden path of buying something that doesn't suit them.
Induction heaters vary power output by varying the DURATION of power pulses. Thus the 2000W setting is full rat power. The 300W setting is simulating 300W power, by applying 2000 watts of power in pulses. The higher the power (under the 2000W max), the more frequent the power pulses.
TLDR: if an induction cooker has a max power of 2000W, then that's the amount of power it will draw when turned on. If you set it to 300(W)... it will draw 2000W for a period, then turn off for a period, then draw 2000W again ad infinitum.
(Keeping in mind circuit efficiencies, it may well draw a little more than 2000W, in the same manner that a microwave will ALWAYS draw more power than its cooking power)

    • @Yorkshirepoptopadventures
      @Yorkshirepoptopadventures  Год назад

Great information for the subscribers thank you. I was already informed (shortly after posting this video) that the unit probably pulsed rather than just using 300w....
The only thing I don't understand (maybe you can clarify) is that the EcoFlow unit in this video wouldn't allow 2000w (I've tried 2000w items that just make it trip) but it does allow this induction hob, if it did pulse to 2000w surely the unit would trip? Also I know people who have used this exact induction hob with a jackery 500 (max 500w) and it's worked fine... I'm not having a go, but you seem to know a lot about this stuff and I am genuinely interested in knowing how something that pulses at 2000w doesn't trip a unit only designed to allow 500w

@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures I hadn't heard of the eco flow x boost until this video. My deductions on how it works matches what I just read on their website.
Basically it simulates a variable voltage transformer (I'm not saying it simply uses a transformer with multiple taps, but it may well do). The effect is that it reduces the voltage supplied to whatever device you are using.
Reducing the voltage to a resistance heating element like a traditional cooktop or bar heater, or an incandescent lamp or similar will make it use less power. That's fine with such simple devices, but most devices won't operate at all at a voltage significantly less than designed for, or will fail after a period of time. This is called brownout, and very occasionally causes widespread failures when an electricity grid stuffs up.
Induction cooktops are more sophisticated than a simple heating element, using various electronic components. If they do work at significantly reduced voltage, they will eventually suffer from brownout and cark it. I looked up Jackery 500 portable power station, and the website tells me the inverter's rated at 500W, with 1000W peak load. If it runs a 2000W induction hob it's impressively over performing its advertised capabilities, which is .....impressive. Most small consumer inverters woefully underperform against their advertised stats. I wouldn't expect the inverter to have a long life though.
I first "identified" a single slot induction cooktop as a wonderful addition to my motorhome about 7 years ago, and bought one for house use to test and use first. I soon realised the error of my thinking, when I found out about the pulsed output rather than the reduced wattage they pretend to have.

    • @Yorkshirepoptopadventures
      @Yorkshirepoptopadventures  Год назад

Thanks for taking time out to produce such a considered response.
It makes sense that the inverter could burn out over time with all the technicals happening within etc. So maybe that's why everyone who is using a 500w jackery with the hob is not having any issues at the moment. Maybe they will in the future?
However, you can see with the information in front of me at the time of making this video how I came to my conclusion, it worked on a 500w unit and the EcoFlow with x boost (which is only 800w with a 1600w surge) - The readout for the output of watts on the EcoFlow was 300w when I turned the hob down to 300w, 800w when I turned it up to 800w etc etc... It never surged higher let alone reaching 2kw (in my tests at the time)
As I mentioned previously, my 2kw heater will not run at 2kw on the River Pro nor the Jackery but will run the induction hob at "lower watts". If I turn the hob up to anything over 1600 the EcoFlow trips and turns off... Again leading me to believe that the hob was actually drawing less than 2kw ...
Forgive me if I've missed anything you mentioned. I waffle a lot 🤣🤣! But I'm still flummoxed as to why it works perfectly on these units 🤣🤣!

They are not generators, they are batteries and BMS and inverter and charger and great energy storage devices, but not generators.
The greatest value of that particular cooktop is the ability to vary power down to 300W.
