I disagree, because using the electric kettle was just "making a pot out of it" just with a different heat source, I say it is well within the rules, a kettle is a kettle. The difference between the sauces is pretty straightforward. Hollandaise is a liaison sauce, butter and eggs whisked into an emulsion over heat. Basically a hot mayonnaise. Bearnaise is strictly a hollandaise with tarragon added, and a (usually tarragon)vinegar and shallot reduction added for piquancy, not other herbs. A roux is a cooked mixture of starch and fat, that is used to thicken a sauce, such as a veloute(with stock) or a béchamel, (with milk).

I think Mike made some unique happy accidents in his bread making by a)using a microwave to rise and bake it, b)cutting it while piping hot, before the crumb had a chance to set properly, and c)toasting it before soaking and frying it, and all that contributed to something akin to an overmixed cake where too much gluten formed, aka a very cakey pillowy bread

While I whole-heartedly agree with Barry in the regard that the camping kettle was the safest option between that and the glass kettle; it is absolutely a broken rule as the hob was off limits. I also think that Mike using a pan over the toaster was a bend of the rule and would totally be allowed as he was still using the toaster to heat his bread; not the hob. But I'd say Mike is the winner as it was the most impressive to me and via disqualification due to a rule break, Barry would be the loser (although his food did look great).

Mike definitely deserved this win; baking bread and making toffee in the microwave and coming out with a complete dish is a fantastic accomplishment.
Barry - I'm going to say it - only _bent_ the rules, didn't break them, for the same reason Jamie using a kettle to do a boil didn't break the rules. So he's in the running.
But who loses? Jamie went outside his usual comfort zone with the seafood and improvised with the kettle enough to bring out a beautiful dish (and I believe it would have been safe to eat even without microwaving). Barry pulled off an amazing base hollandaise in a microwave and toasted his veggies with the toaster. The fondue was a clever idea, but it's not really walking out of the appliance safe zone - if he'd pulled a cheese fondue instead, I might've been more impressed.
To me, Jamie takes this one, and Barry is the loser, but by a very very thin margin.

I once delivered a yacht with a newly installed induction stove and a complete new set of cookware... that was all aluminum, so none of it worked. Except the steel kettle that was left from the old set, so we cooked our spaghetti noodles in that. (and microwaved the sauce)
Conclusion: Barry's not even bending the rules.
