Who’s the most pretentious in this video?!
Isn’t that Barry by default? 😉 (And yes, I’m fully aware that he isn’t in it.)
Bazz! Those ingredientes are in his cupboard! We all know it😂😂😂😂😂
Baz of course lol
Barry always.
even if baz is not on the video his presence will always be the moment someone uses the word pretentious
The ad copy for the butter was some of the best I've heard. Kudos to their copywriter/marketing department.
The tone is very tongue-in-cheek, informative and best of all, conversational. The pacing is superb, and the writer(s) deserve a royalty fee (at minimum 5%) for that work.
Gosh, I love good copywriting. I always read ads when I come across them in magazines, and I always read the copy on the products I'm considering purchasing.
I will say that I adore the attitude of the second company. Most of these places try to convince you that their quality or name alone is worth more than any price, like they're the only TRUE version and anything else is fake, etc. The butter's just saying hey, this is new and weird and pricey. But it's good to try something new and weird occasionally and it's pricey because we made sure it's quality. You'll cook something great, because we did the hard part for you. They aren't claiming they're the only way to experience butter and life's better with loyalty to them, they're saying life's better if you splurge on something pretentious occasionally and they're trying to make sure they're worth that splurge. I can respect that.
certaily less pretentious than elon musk beer
I think we should rename this series to “Pretentious or Posh”
I wanted to see what other flavors they had and if they shipped to the US. But I just want to tack on for anyone else reading: aside from the crab butter, they have loads of butter that is actually reasonably priced. Their normal, single rolls (which looks to be about 2-3 sticks of butter. Can't find exact size) are only £5. And they have 8 other flavors like smoked barbecue, truffle and parmesan, and bearnaise for just £5. The crab one is the only one that's £38 and they have their No. 78 Spanish ham and saffron butter that goes for £55 . I dare say they aren't even that pretentious, but do lean into the ridiculousness of the overall brand and offer some over the top items.
Well said, and I agree
Exactly!
Since you asked to be corrected, Mike, here goes. When Germany united in 1871, Bavaria demanded the Reinheitsgebot be enforced in all of Germany but they faced FIERCE resistance from the rest of Germany. It wasnt actually implemented in the rest of Germany until the early 1900s and the name Reinheitsgebot (purity order) wasn't used until the 1920s. As for the wall story, you're probably thinking of the Brandenburg Beer War. When the wall came down, West Germany was now enforcing it's laws in the east (As West Germany annexed the east, the opposite of what Mike implied.) and there were breweries in the east who could no longer label ther beer as beer. This led to the Brandenburg Beer War where several breweries fought for the right to call their speciality beers beer. The laws have been relaxed over the years and you can apply for permits to call your product beer even if it doesn't follow the Reinheitsgebot, otherwise gluten-free beer could never be called beer.
Ace episode, though.
Thank you for taking the time to share this tidbit!
It was never a law. Weißbier is made with wheat and is still called beer.
Call me a dumb american, hell I am not even a fan of beer anyway, but "Purity Rules" kinda ruin things in my experience. Alton Brown said it best, once some place becomes the "Home" of a food and thus becoming this standard that has to be kept original, it ceases to be good because often they tend to focus too much on keeping what they have "true" that they loose the spirit of what they were making. Now there are exceptions to this, but idk, kinda cant help from being skeptical, I have had German beer before, and frankly, it just tastes less sweet, not better, not worse.
@sterlingodeaghaidh5086 the reason the rules were placed was because people were putting low quality ingredients in their beer to produce it cheaper. It's not a law as such that you can't put anything else in beer.
@@schweinerwinkler1633 Ok from that perspective I understand that idea.
The only downside to this video a day thing is that I'm going to be so sad when it's over and it'll feel like something is missing. 😅
Thank you sorted team for the hard work. It doesn't go unnoticed. We appreciate you!!
HUZZAH!
just think of it as a limited run, then when it ends, you can auction off the feeling you got watching the series!
Was thinking the same thing, the day after Christmas is going to be months of withdrawal looking for the next fix.
Well, it's the holidays anyway so you'd be missing everything. January is always a dreadful time, because I'd be sick of the hangover, be lonely, be missing the food, and be missing the time Sorted uploaded everyday of the week.
Almost like there was a youtube channel that had this as its main feature.
Tesla beer definitely wins "most pretentious", because it's just a good beer (surprisingly) in a fancy package with a famous name slapped on.
The rest were also all pretentious, but not in the same way: they were all extreme examples of elaborate presentations of high-end ingredients, but still useful in their own way. I can see using the olive oil pearls, and that shellfish butter, if price weren't such an obstacle.
I couldn't care less about the beer.
Enjoying the daily video treat, gents, keep up the good work!
Also I'm 100% sure you can get better beers for a fraction of the price. It's *all* about the pretense and the bullshit with that one.
Most pretentious product of the century - possibly of ALL the centuries
it actually gets worse, they also sold this with two "Cyber" mugs for even more money.
It tickles me that they're drinking that. And they just referred to Twitter as Twitter and not X like Musk wants.
I'm in the US, and I just checked a chain liquor store for a Helles Lager (aka same kind of beer as the "Gigabier") that was brewed in Germany (aka not an american rip off). Anyway, you can get a 6-pack for $13.99 (or $2.33/1.83 UK pounds per bottle). Now obviously, I'm not insane enough to taste the gigabier so I cannot attest to quality difference (though the liquor store beer does seem to be pretty highly rated from reviews and what not), but that aside- even at the price Ben paid -- we're talking the tesla beer was 14 times the price. At the mark up price, it is 409 times the price.
There's no bigger sucker than a Tesla stan in 2023, it seems.
I love how Jamie's instant reaction to the olive oil pearls was, "Pretentious." 100% Jamie! That's some pointless, fancy nonsense right there.
It's not pointless, but it's an ingredient that was created by and for a Michelin 3-starred restaurant (Ferrán Adrià's El Bulli), and that's automatically pretentious.
@@petertaylor4980 Excuse me Sir, I think you will find that spheres of food are in fact pointless. Being without point is what separates the sphere from the common cube my good man
@@levmyshkin8366 This comment wins the Internet today, I've been laughing for the last 5 minutes and all I can say is, You're not wrong!
What's "automatically" pretentious about michelin starred restaurants?@@petertaylor4980
Rule of thumb: If the box it comes is costs more than the product: It's pretentious.
MORE MIKE ON BEER! It was awesome seeing his passion come through and as a food appreciation channel, it would be brilliant to have Mike diving into beer and some exploring with that.
Ok that's friendship right there, it must have been hard for Ebbers to watch them open those bottles knowing they were glugging at least £750 quids worth!
They just drunk 250£ each
Honestly it's fine that he did, it's just the pretentious nonsense of the same crowd that bankrupted themselves buying NFTs, and not actual value.
Just like Tesla stock, that number is overinflated due to hype.
Bet he already bought a second whole case for himself
Like these guys are worrying about how much stuff costs 😂 Sorted are smashing it
Ben continuing to prove he's in the right line of work of content creator chef by letting his mates blissfully drink away 500 quids
I love how Jamie said he still wasn't a fan of the crabmeat butter even after spreading it on the crumpet, but still took monster bites from it and finished it before Ben, who liked the butter. Classic Jamie 😆
I challenge Ben and Kush to create a compound butter that is better and cheaper than the Sublime Butter. They do not have to use the same ingredients, but in a blind tastetest with someone who likes seafood they must prefer Ben and Kush's butter.
I know that the 24 videos back to back was a TONNE of work for the Sorted team, but this was absolutely the best advent calendar! So nice to have new episodes of my comfort show every day!
i'm loving the trend of the guys wearing the merch they inspired, jamie absolutely is a flavor bomb lol
The Reinheitsgebot ("Rhine-heights-gu-boat") is the law Mike explains--and I'm very impressed with his knowledge of German beer law! :)
And it is not enforced anymore. Most German breweries still stick to it, but not all.
My German is not very good but I think a good translation would be the "Purity commandment"
Thou shalt only brew your bear using water, barley and hops
@@wave1090 BierStDB und BierV???
A barman friend in the 80s wanted to add green food colouring for St Patrick's day. He was told Yes, if you want to go to jail.
@@wave1090 German breweries sticking to it is also partially responsible for the German beer scene being particularly backwards and boring.
Shout out every day of December to the entire Sorted team but ESPECIALLY! the editing team for making the video a day format happen. Love you all!
I love how Jamie really didn't like that butter but praised it anyway because he knew alot of people would love it.
0:46 these record scratches are always welcomed because you know something good is cominh after them😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good for you, terrible for us 😂
@@SortedFoodAnd that's why i love You guys ❤❤❤❤
I went to the Sublime website and it turns out that wasn't even the most expensive butter they make. Good God...
I've not had spherical olive oil, but I did have a dish once with spherical vinegar and it was such an amazing pop of flavor and actual textural pop that it really elevated the dish from a simple risotto to one of the best dishes I've ever tasted.
I can comprehend that. I can't comprehend olive oil spheres providing anything like as much impact. Especially not at that price!
@@MatthewWaltonWalton Exactly, I feel like it only really works with things that actually have a bit more of a flavour pop too. I don't particularly enjoy a burst of olive oil in my mouth, no matter how high quality it is. Oil works best when it merges with the rest of the ingredients to create a cohesive whole...if you just want a fun texture, do it with something that's at least not UNpleasant by itself.
How generous of Ebbers to share the Tesla beer with the lads - what a lovely friend ❤
It was great watching Mike talking about something he was the most knowledgeable about!
They better have gifted the butter to Ben after he let them drink that beer! May all your weekend breakfasts be filled with crabby butter Ebbers!
I appreciate your dedication to always providing proper subtitles! ❤
Yes! It was such a welcome surprise the first time I turned them on and they WEREN'T auto generated!
Thank you boys for bringing such a great month and year ❤ you are the best! Love you all!
I love Jamie's 🤨on the "cyber hops". Preeeeeeee-tentious!!!
Truly appreciate the entire SORTED team being so true to their word and gifting us all completely fresh content everyday until Christmas. My convent school childhood has conditioned me to feel like we don't deserve this!! So thank you! We will be extra nice this season and try to pay it forward.
I hope the channel get a bump in ad revenue from these daily videos to cover the cost of these ingredients. Props to the team for consistently putting out fun videos like this.
My question is: Did Ben take the rest of the caviar crab lobster butter home with him after filming? Great video.
Epic! I love this 1 video a day thing.... We are so loved. Thank you Sorted team!
Yay!!! Day 2 of our advent calendar of awesome videos!!!! Thanks SortedFood❤🎉
Not only does Sorted teach me about cooking, but my derpy self is being reminded of time zones. New video every day at 5?? But it's been live for me at 12 noon both days! *thinks it through* Ohhhh ... right. Yes.
In 2012 I had my "Projektprüfung" for my apprenticeship as a lab technician. I guess in english that would be project exam or maybe project review?
The project my team had was brewing and analyzing beer. One of the team mates found a keg of Fürstenberg Pils, that went past its shelf-life in 1998. So of course we included it in our roster of samples.
On opening the Pils smelled like Hefeweizen instead. We also risked a taste and again, the taste was more like Hefeweizen instead of Pils. Analyzing it with GC-MS the profile of it's component also was more like Hefeweizen. No idea if it's a universal truth, or we just had some good circumstances, but it seems that Pils becomes Hefeweizen if you just wait long enough.
I think I still have all the records of our project somewhere on a USB drive. Might be time to have a look at that stuff again.
I've really been enjoying these videos the last couple days. Thanks for all the hard work that went into making all of them.
I’m so excited for a video a day and I’m so impressed that they are truly videos and not shorts. I would have been impressed with a short video a day. Good on you for doing full videos. Also, you all are going to be exhausted come Boxing Day. Thank you!
I think the butter has it right. A certain level of pretentious isn't bad. Sometimes it brings enjoyment and fun to your life.
Thank you guys! Trying things that I would never and just seeing what's out there is informative and entertaining.
Jamie saying “it’s a bit weird” over the oil pearls, while the camera tilts a little really threw me 🤣
Sublime butter has an even MORE exclusive option: Cinco Jotas Jamon Iberico, Iberian Carabineros prawns, Pedro Ximinez sherry, and Spanish saffron (55 pound for butter only)
Getting a @SortedFood video everyday until Christmas feels like getting an early prezzie ❤🥳
Definitely 3 x Pretentious, but enjoyable viewing and great banter! Thanks guys and Sorted Team ❤
You guys should do an episode on food price inflation. I seriously have no idea what anything costs anymore. Lately I've been using recipes that stretch proteins further, like using ground meat with breadcrumbs or rice and/or vegetables to create larger portions. Are there ways to make bougie food with less cost?
Use beans instead of meat.
Great one again. Love the ideas of seeing a video every day. Cheers
I love these and I'm stoked for the rest of the advent calendar videos. This is my kind of countdown to the holidays. Nothing is as pretentious as that beer. We need an update on how much Ben gets for that last bottle. The other two were totally pretentious but absolutely in a good way. Also... I have this odd, intellectual crush on Ben and I just don't feel like that's allowed.
FYI, Sublime Butter has several less over-the-top varieties that are reasonably priced. It's great stuff.
my favorite videos on this channel, please do more, i love these
Love the daily videos. Thank you Sorted!
I'm glad they're starting to label things pretentious again. There were times where they were saying "I like it, so maybe it isn't," but it was totally pretentious. A few times they've been pretty strict and called things pretentious that were on the line. But in this one, they were really ready to take aim at it. Good show!
I'm very happy i discovered your channel guys. We are presently décembre 2023 and i began to look at all yours previus videos :)
Your earned a subscriber ❤
The German/Bavarian "Reinheitsgebot" means "Commandment of Purity" since 1516 and beer that follows it can only can contain water, hops, (barley) malt, and yeast.
And you can buy so many amazing versions of beer without musk of Elon in it. ❤
The best Advent calendar yet! I live in SoCal and work night shift, so this is Most Definitely worth staying awake just a bit longer! See you at 9AM tomorrow!
SO excited for day 2 Advent! You guys are the Best! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄🎄
Any food/ drink is made to be drunk, limited edition or not, that includes expensive vintage wines. Not drinking or eating them purey due to cost is an insult to the maker and food waste. Enjoy what you've bought, keep the bottle for memories! Why buy it if you don't want to eat/ drink it?! Also the olive oil pearls would be great on vegan canapés instead of caviar!
I agree. Also, many beers, wines, and liquors are not meant to be aged at all. In fact, aging the wrong product can result in off flavors and deterioration. Most beer is generally meant to be enjoyed relatively soon after brewing so there is a good chance that this beer is not a good candidate for aging.
Looking forward to all your new videos every day! I have an idea to add to a chefs guessing spice blends show. Pick one of the blends they did not answer correctly and have the chefs make the blend from ingredients they listed and use it an a dish. Create Sorted spice blends from the ones that work the best. Thank guys!
This video was especially good. Really fun conversations about three really extra ingredients.
"It looks tezlery." Thank you Mike for my favourite quote of the day.
Love Ebber's confused face at the end. Oh I can't wait for tomorrow's video!
The German Purity Law of 1516, The Reinheitsgebot of Bavaria is generally considered to be the first food safety law instigated on European continent. With the unification of Germany under Bismark, it was insisted that this Purity Law be implemented throughout Germany. Unfortunately this led to the wholesale demise of other Germany regional of which Wiesbier, Altbier, and Koelsch were to survive, and the beers that made the Hanseatic League and grew its wealth, such as Hamburgbier which have been lost to time. Today, in the Craft Beer world, the Reinheistverbot is considered by many to be an unnecessary anachronism that artificially stifles creativity and expression and does nothing either, to preserve anything other than a regional Bavarian tradition.
Everything that is brewed according to the German Purity Law is beer. Everything else is at best a mixed beer drink.
I think that the Purity Law is one of the most important laws for preserving and promoting the original art of brewing. Anyone who produces a different drink with more ingredients simply has to give it a different name.
Excellent video, great selections!
I used to finish broiled lobster tails with a crab butter like that at a fine dining joint. People loved it!
Video a day is going to be incredible during December, thank you so much Sorted! Also damn, could've warned the boys about the Tesla bottles haha
"In high quality restaurants (* pause *) a decade ago.." Ebbers throwing shaaaaaaaade!
"A decade ago" is being generous. El Bulli, the restaurant which the others are copying, closed 12 years ago. Emend to "popular in high quality restaurants 15 years ago, after Adrià introduced it 20 years ago."
The pearls may be good for dry little slices of toast with some roasted garlic yummm.
Now that you've tried Tesla beer, you should try the Volkswagen currywurst
As usual great videos and giving us one a day until Xmas is a brilliant present. Make more of the advent thing though, big intro that really hits it home what you're doing so it feels like the small event opening an advent calendar door was as a child.
Wishing you the strength needed for your journey. ❤
These are my favourite kind of videos!
Ebber's description of the "gigabeer" is the best thing he has done all year lmfaooooo😂
Yes!! Pretentious ingredients was my favourite series!!
Im scared what I'll do after this video a day treat, youre spoiling us!! ❤
The butter sounds absolutely delicious
Spot on lads. Reinheitsgebot (probably the closest Englishy pronunciation would be "Rhine heights g'boat" but sounds much more like it means business in a proper German accent) means "purity law", it restricts the ingredients in beer to barley, hops, and water.
Pretentious ingredients isn't the same without Baz...the Prince of Pretentiousness 😂
Yeah, it's better!
@@user-yb6ju7fq2o opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one, and no one wants to hear it
Jamie is talking about shape variation with the olive oil pearls bringing something extra visually.
Thank you 🎉
9:30 Jamie doesn't like crab yet he destroys that crumpet with crab butter faster than Ben. 🤔
Ben savor the taste, Jamie wants it gone as soon as possible without wasting it 😅.
I love that fun and often lighthearted episodes like this can show how insightful you guys can be. Mike's thoughts on the valuation of a product for its scarcity or branding are spot on... It really does change the cost of a product depending on how you perceive its value. The Tesla beer is pretentious AF, yes... But damn, they know how to sell a concept, don't they?
I'm loving the video a day! It makes me very happy. I don't know who was doing the camera work today but I was getting seasick watching. Especially during the oil caviar part. lol Maybe a tripod next time. Still love your videos.
Happy holidays! This made them better! 🎄🎄🎄🎄❤️❤️❤️
I really like European beer, the Czechs and Germans have some really good stuff. And the growth of the boutique brewing industry in the U.S.A. has shown beyond doubt that the brewmasters have definitely done a bit of traveling and tasting. Oh, and I thought the olive oil "pearls" were totally arse. And as for compound butter, splash out on some foo-foo high butterfat butter and make your own. The empty "Darth Vader's Brewery" bottles would make for a really beautiful addition to a knick-knack cabinet.
I feel Ben would take home that butter aft filming the video and be enjoying it during this weekend 😂😂😂
I bet you could make a wonderful bougie bruscetta by mixing olive oil pearls, balsamic viniagrette pearls, and some of that ketchup kaviar from a few years ago
Got my banana jumper on the black Friday deal yesterday, thanks sorted team!
I will keep commenting on every advent video just to keep the train going. You absolutely deserve a YT boost.
You should check out some of the super fancy and possible pretentious waters that are available!!
We’ve done at least one before… £120 for a bottle of water?!
YAY! SO HAPPY FOR MY DAY 2 ADVENT
Getting a Polestar ad on this video right after the beer tasting feels extra funny ^^
One minute in, "Pretentious." That's gotta be a record 😂 And yes, agreed!
That had me laughing😂
Man hearing Ben gush about that butter made me want to buy a pot of it it sounds delicious
THanks.
Love the history lesson from mike
That butter would be great to have. Just like a simple toast would be elevated with it.
And I am so looking forward to the video tomorrow🎉
Love you Sorted team! We are spoiled rotten with Sorted December!!! It's going to make January unbearable hahaha
thanks for the christmas Idea Crab butter under the christmas tree haha
the first ingredient we use in the bar sometimes with our seasonal cocktails coz they other flavours too. They got like lemon myrtle and other things. They definitely serve a purpose in terms of wow factor
i am PUMPED for a video a day, love u!!!
You guys are the best.
the beer bottles are lovely, until they're opened, the clear top really devalues it in my opinion.
