Observe the technique of denying dissent by the pretense of supposing that you already KNOW what they claim is "true". What "they" call "truth" is peculiar in that it cannot defend itself. "Truth" must be carefully guarded from any challenge lest it die in battle.
I have realised that we were being shaped by media since the 70s when I taught McLuhan based media studies at university level. I have progressively un plugged and now only provisionally trust non government, non mainstream sources. My system is eliminate those obviously compromised sources and ignore the noisy counter narrative sources and keep looking for sources that prove to be useful over time, such as Bret and Heather. Like Bret says if these sources hold up over time, then start taking them more seriously.

The only solution I see is something that would appear to be un-American to most Americans and un-Democratic to most people in Western Democracies. The solution would be to make it illegal to give things away for free or even for less than the cost of production. People would have to pay for their news. People would have to pay a subscription to use a browser, etc. That way the product would be the thing we support with our money rather than us, the people who are mined for our consumer preferences.
Solutions that rely on coercion usually cause unintended consequences , and more problems, because people become very skilled at finding work arounds to what they consider to be stupid, arbitrary rules. Finding ways to align interests is better than coercion in the long run. Just my opinion.

I disagree with Bret just a little from the end of the video. I am more optimistic about “normies” unplugging from these corrupt sources of information. I agree 100% that democracy can produce bad results because "the whim" of the people might not be very well informed. And, I'm convinced that that is the exact reason that the founders of the United States set up a republic. On everything went digital in the way of TV reception, I saw that as an opportunity to stop drawing reception through a tv. And so I did. I don't know that that has made me any smarter or better informed than anybody else, but I can say for certain that I have a different perspective than every person that I know who regularly watches television.

I disagree with Bret just a little from the end of the video. I am more optimistic about “normies” unplugging from these corrupt sources of information. While it maybe overwhelming at first, most people will at least want to seek out things that are congruent with reality. It may be walking blind for a bit, but I believe in people…or at least I’m hopeful..
I agree 100% that democracy can produce bad results because "the whim" of the people might not be very well informed.
And, I'm convinced that that is the exact reason that the founders of the United States set up a republic.
Not perfect, but, it is the best attempt at safeguarding against the dangers of a pure democracy, while still trying to capture the best components of it.
