Really enjoyed making this video, despite the terrible weather. The 944 S2 was a real surprise and I wasn’t disappointed in an way.

I had a 924 many years ago. Loved that car, but I always dreamed of this year 944. The wider body, the integrated lights in the bumper, the smoother engine. This was absolute perfection in the 924/944 line.

    I'm a proud owner of a 91 944 S2
510 sold in the states of that year in the US. They are absolutely night and day difference compared to the previous naturally aspirated engines. I absolutely adore the car! Has cost me a pretty penny but the smile that gives me is unmatched

@@thedrivebygg I have long owned a Porsche 944 Coupe from 1987 and a Porsche 944 S2 Cabrio. I actually wanted to buy the Porsche 944 S3 afterwards, but when I saw the Porsche 968 for the first time I didn't like the open front lights. That was the reason to stick with the beautiful 944, because I always liked the closed front best!

I’m a happy owner of a 1990 S2 Cabriolet…with just a tad under 68k on the clock. Mine is Baltic Blue with full linen-colored leather interior. I bought this as a “gift to me” the year I turned 50 the same year I made Navy O-6 (Captain). Is she the fastest? No. Are there cup holders? No. But due to the near 50-50 front/rear weight distribution, she handles curves as if she is on rails. And she always gets positive comments. I live in New England, so she is “put to sleep” from late November through to mid-May. Everything is original in mine….except the backlight in the convertible roof. I do have to admit, I am considering upgrading her headlights and the stereo system (my Blaupunkt Reno just doesn’t get it), and planning to have the cabrio roof replaced. Nice review….and that Guards Red always screams standing still! Bravo-Zulu, gentlemen….thank you for sharing your ride!

Cheers Captain and thank you for your service. The 944 cabs are really starting to look good now, and they are really rare. Thanks for all your info and bothering to comment much appreciated. Will have 986 and 987 boxster videos coming at some point this year.

Another point that is also very important.
All owners of a Porsche 944 S2 with the 3 liter engine should make sure that the slide rails on the chain tensioner, which sits between the camshafts, are replaced regularly. At that time, Porsche neglected to include this wearing part in its maintenance. These slide rails age and wear out and if they are not replaced regularly, major engine damage can occur.

Thanks for commenting, really pleased that you found my video on RUclips,. A white 944 is quite rare, and from memory the early cars have the different dash layout. Enjoy the car and feel free to share any learnings from ownership in the comments. One day I’m hoping to own a 968 or a 718 boxster, I wouldn’t rule out a 944 that’s for sure, such a raw driving experience. Thanks again keep watching and subscribe if you haven’t 👍

The owner seems like a good guy. The naturally aspirated S2 like this one strikes me as the model to have. Here in the States a buddy of mine owned a 944 back in the 80s. He bought the car new as a congratulatory gift to himself for earning his engineering degree (and landing a good paying job).
I too earned an engineering degree and landed a good job. But I wound up buying a really nice low-mileage 1967 Camaro convertible soon followed by a new 1987 Honda CRX Si. Both cars cost me less than half as much as my buddy’s 944. That’s not to speak ill of the 944 - I still think this is a great looking design. I’m actually surprised that these cars sell for as little as they do given what so many other cars are selling for these days. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 944s jump in value in the near future.

In the US version, with LHD, the battery does indeed go under the "bonnet." It's up against the firewall on what is now the offside. I would think the steering takes up that space on an RHD model. If buying a North American 944 it's worth taking a look under the battery. Most have lost the battery cover that snaps on top (which is available), and rain can let battery acid leak down. That can eat up not just the floor but also the firewall, and is extremely difficult and expensive to repair.
Edit: I see Pete DOES have the battery cover on. Good job Pete!

I'm not sure on this example about the pinstripe, a bit too much for my taste

    • @thedrivebygg

Yeah the pin stripe isn't for everyone, but your black with cream leather sounds quite rare. I really loved this 944 S2, it was such a raw experience that you just don't get these days. Next month I will post a video on my mates 2005 987 2.7 manual boxster, which is also a great car. I had some equipment fail on me when we did the videoing so just awaiting the next opportunity to re-film the driving portion.
