    Very nice review, I love how in depth you went into this game.
    This game is one of my most favorite games of all time, and I feel it holds up really well on a lot of fronts.

      +scorptatious Thanks man. Saw a lot of reviews of people just saying it was great but not saying why, so thought it'd be cool to go into it a little.
      I'm sure you've heard of him, but if you like in depth reviews like this, then Matthew Matosis is pretty much the master at it: ruclips.net/user/Matthewmatosis

    I recently played New N Tasty using what I call "classic" settings, and found it to be much more enjoyable. I played on the Hard one-hit-kill difficulty, I turned the gamma way down so it was much darker like the original looked, and I never quicksaved, only using checkpoints when I died.

    • @razeyourgame
      @razeyourgame  6 лет назад +3

      I'm going back to play it at some point, so I'll definitely give this a try. I think I probably need to distance it from the original a bit more in my head and see if I enjoy it more the next time around. But thanks for the "classic" settings.

    23:20 Eh, I'd argue with that. The controls can get eaten quite often, the run is slippery, and changing states can be cumbersome, among other things. Admittedly, it's probably better than what the competition came up with at the time.

    That late point you make about forgetting gameplay elements ironically applies pretty poorly to Soulstorm. The game forces the inability of possession through possession orbs for such a huge part of the game that one essentially forgoes it (especially considering how many offensive items are available).
    However, many of the last few levels include several slig areas that seem extremely difficult for the chantless Abe the player has been using for most of the game, but are extremely easy if a slig is simply possessed to kill every other one in the area. I (and probably many others) essentially forgot the existence of possession through its forced nonexistence in so much of the game, despite having played every Abe game beforehand, as the vast majority of previous slig encounters forced this chantless playstyle.
    Such areas also feel extremely unsatisfying to complete by simply engaging in mass homicide when the game previously forced me to use stealth and offensive items to get through almost every other similar situation in the game. Its design is pretty poor in that regard.

    • @razeyourgame
      @razeyourgame  3 года назад +1

      I'm about halfway through it and getting to what I've heard people call, the good bit.
      Ill keep an eye out for qhat youve just said as that's interesting if possession becomes more meaningless as you go on.

    this game and Jean Pierre juenet n marc caros City of Lost Children had a huge impact on me as a kid. So much of my taste aesthetically is a direct result of these 2 90s cultural oddities. I fuckin love em both. I had a period of life in which id hav recurring dreams in a strange composite of these 2 worlds n my home town. Theyve really had a profound affect on me creatively.

    I think it'd be awesome if the off-screen dangers and events could be done using positional audio cues. This way, the player would be told not just that there's something dangerous on one of the adjacent screens but they could hear on which screen exactly.

    • @vladsaioc6269
      @vladsaioc6269 2 года назад

      They do that, though in somewhat limited capacity. The proximity to the edge of the current screen by modulating volume. The only issue is that screens that have not been visited at all yet are not loaded into RAM yet (and consequently, none of the enemy objects are instantiated, so do not generate "pre-emptive" audio). This comes with an advantage: enemy scripts not running prevents having a patrolling enemy in an *unfair* position when you first visit the screen, guaranteeing fixed enemy placement (though using the audio cues themselves could mitigate this); it also prevents chasers from rushing you from off screen (Scrabs in particular do that after they are loaded in memory, and their speed might not give enough time to react). Still, you are right that better off screen audio could help even more.
      Edit: after testing, audio panning is not used unfortunately.

    Beat Abe 1 again, now going for 100%. I got only 75/99 dudes even while hawking every pixel and using some guides here and there... crazy. And it was crazy tough, too, whew. But I got the good ending so I'll be content with this I think, gonna look up the rest. lol
    A great game for me, someone with nostalgia and the drive to get closure from beating it. A probably below average game for someone going in nowadays, and blindly. I think it'd be a billion times better with more generous checkpointing and Exoddus' "All o' ya!" command. For these reasons, I think Exoddus is the better of the two OGs. (I've yet to play the other games, remakes included.)

    It's so trash that steam doesn't do controller support for this and Exoddus, favourite games ever and shouldn't have to download third party shit to play it 👎

    • @razeyourgame
      @razeyourgame  Год назад +1

      I managed to get controller support on steam for this but not for Exoddus.
      I'd just download the RELIVE engine, it drastically improves the games, but totally agree especially since they rereleased them in the OddBox for more money.

      @@razeyourgame oh nice! I managed to get the majority of the controls mapped to my ps5 controller, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make R1 and L1 combo with triangle, square, X and circle, for game speak.
      I put hello, follow me and wait on my left analogue stick which actually worked alright but you can't do the same for the right analogue stick, makes me sad I have such a craving to play this game on controller lol. Really nice video mate kept my entertained for a bit at work 👌 thanks!
