- A detailed review of the 3rd Generation Kia Picanto 1.0 litre Automatic (JA) including a comprehensive overview of the interior and storage space. I drove it in the city, the country and on 70mph roads. I reset the trip computer to see what the efficiency is like on each drive. This particular car is a GT-Line with 66bhp and a automated manual gearbox.

Great to see an actual realistic test of an automated manual gearbox, rather than the normal reviews in the motoring press simply describing it as clunky and slow and recommending the manual.
❤
I've had my 2021 turbo-model picanto for about 2 months now, and I'm in love! 😄 So much fun and comfortness to throw it around and the low fuel consumption just makes me want to go on roadtrips all the time. I believe it will be even more fun when the summer comes. At the moment we have snow and ice here in finland.
Excellent review. Tons better than most of the major reviews. In fact, one of the best I've seen, and I watch a hell of a lot of them. The amount of detail you give in real world driving scenarios is brilliant: Going in-depth on the robotised auto, the ride, turning circle, mpg etc, etc. Keep doing these. Well done.
I have a bit of a soft spot for smaller city cars. My first car was a Suzuki Alto that i nicknamed "The Postage Stamp" as it was small but still got me from A to B. Underpowered but i didn't care at the time, it was fun to drive.
Good name!
@@RichardFanders A little on the cringy side but yeah 🤣
@@rufusgreenleaf2466 your story is awesome 👍💕☺️🥰❤️ but brother you didn't tell us your alto model year 🎈 I mean tell us what is your alto car model
@@faaizabbasi5440 It was a 2011 1.0L 67bhp Suzuki Alto in white. It mirrored the Nissan Pixo, and was bog standard as it had no rev counter nor did it have AC like some Alto's have. I loved it for the 2 years i had it before i upgraded to a 2016 1.0L Fiesta Ecoboost Titanium i have now. Which is also fun to drive, this time with more power and gadgets.
Had one of those. Loved the willing engine and handling. Hated the paint quality and lack of adjustment in the driver's seat. Despite all it served me well and I miss it sometimes
I do like your reviews. You actually cover everything better than the professionals, because you address what buyers want to experience.
What a brilliant video! Very informative but in an easy going kind of way which made it great to watch.
Well done Richard, great video. Very comprehensive coverage of many aspects pother reviewers don't cover. Welcome to use our vehicles any time.
Nice video Richard! I like how you tell us about things that other reviewers don't (like for example low speed manoeuvres, especially with that kind of gearbox).
Thank you Richard for another excellent plain English review. I'm thinking of downsizing with my next car in these expensive times, and this has been really helpful.
Its genuinely nice i think kia is getting alot better with their recent cars
Passed my test months ago and I still watch your videos, Great content!
i came back to watch the review of a c4 you did because i wanna buy a car with AMT transmission, then i checked your channel and i found out that you made a bunch of new videos, i activated the bell so i won't miss any of the upcoming ones 👍
A very comprehensive video. Enjoyed it. Thank you.
good work showing how easy it is to get in and out of, most don't think to do that and it's the reason many go for SUVs
Very eloquent review, refreshing compared to some journalists and RUclipsrs.
Great review - thanks Richard
Omg I didn't know you had this channel great review 😀😀
Been searching for a car and was close to deciding on a Ford Fiesta. But, for some reason, this Kia Picanto honestly excites me, and I LOVE IT! Cheers for the review Richard!
A great review Richard, well done.
A very decent presentation. Thank you
Thank you for an excellent, very thorough review.
I drive a 4 year old Kia Picanto GT Line S 1-0GDi 5 speed manual which has given me
a lot of satisfaction.
The new model seems very similar.
I appreciated your honest comments.
I have subscribed but as I am 79 years old I intend to keep my car.
I would readily buy the newer model if I had to change my car.
Hi Alan. How many miles have you done, and has it been reliable?
I have travelled 21,000 miles over 3 years & I am very satisfied with my Picanto.
Just needed regular servicing.
@@alangoudie2299 thank you Alan, that is reassuring, as I have a 2020 model.
I have the GT line S I had to wait 9 months to get it I love it
Such a small and nice city car...Almost all brands should learn quite from KIA...!
I learned how to drive manual in a 1.2L Kia Picanto and from watching all your videos, so it's awesome to see you review the very car I learned to drive in 😁. It's been a fun little car to do the daily commute in, and very economical too. I just wish I had the turbo version though, since I have to rev the hell out of it just to keep up with traffic.
This is only a 1.0L
Thanks for the review. Looks a lot better than the old ASG automated manual in the VW Up! (discontinued)
Great review, thanks. loved your Aygo X one too. Pity you don't have have an i10 review. :(
Fantastic review of how to drive an automatic firstly! Secondly, a little sad I can’t get the GT Line S at the moment in automatic - but am going for the X LINE S … I just liked the red detailing in the GT Line.
Will come back and let you know how I get on!
Great cars, i've had my 2020 GT Line S Turbo for a few months now and use it for my 65 mile a day round trip to work........40 mpg is what i've been managing in this car, with decent performance from the torquey engine - sounds good too once it's warmed up. Great fun car.
40 mpg sounds very poor for such a small car. My wife's Grandland x diesel auto does 60mpg
@@ridehead8771 it's up to 42 mpg average now! 😁
excellent review as always, i love low weight cars, under or jusat around 1000kg 🔥
Great review of the AMT ..i feared the worst.Never be as smooth as the ZF in my BMW but I take this when i go to London
Very good review 👍
Nice video! All of your videos are great !!!
I have the picanto 3 trim , shadow version 2022 and i think it is a nice city car. It is well equipped for safety and comfort and handles well.
I just wanted to tell you that if you want a bit more fuel economy you can turn off the AC...
27:16 The centre console armrest is adjustable, If you lift the plastic clip at the front it allows you to slide the top padded section of the armrest forward a few inches.
Really great review. For a second thought it was a Yaris GR, One day...😆
I was at Brands Hatch today, there was quite a few GRs on circuit.
@@RichardFanders It's the ultimate massmarket stock driving car IMO (obviously civic could be argued). That short wheel base, combined with amazing suspension and nice relatively powerful engine all that and you could still daily drive it...
Enjoyed the review Richard
Just imagine if you owned the 99bhp turbo and ,for the sake of argument you had a £250 remap that suddenly give you 140bhp (a 41 %ish power gain) and an extra 29lbs / ft torque
😇
Yes, that would be quite a lot of fun.
A Bluespark tuning box for £175 and untraceable so warranty friendly
@@NB_NB_NB it's like a completely different but wild beast....i'm in love😊
And your 7yr warranty will probably be up shit creek 😢
Looks like quite a nice little car this! Thanks for the review Richard!
P.s
Can we have a link to the song 😂
I have the 1.2 4-cylinder Mpi Automatic and I drove the 1.0 T-GDi 3-cylinder manual in a replacement car, it's world apart when it comes to performance and engine sound. The Turbo is a really sporty car, accelerates great in all the 5 gears, it has lower gear ratios than the 1.2 MPi. At highway speeds, the Turbo has lower revs. The engine sound is rough, but a lot lower pitched than the 4-cylinder, so even if you are high in revs, it doesn't make that loud of a noise. It drives a little like a Diesel, but it revs easily until 6500 RPM. I would easily recommend the Turbo, but you don't get it as automatic.
Hi im from Malaysia, I'm still loyal to my 2018 picanto.. a car that's easy to drive and fuel efficient
Seems like a decent budget friendly proposition. To me this is quite a bit more appealing than the Aygo X and really isn’t anymore expensive at all
The best!
Thanks your videos have gave me an i dear am going for pcanto
I have a 2010 Picanto 1 77800 miles .Never had any problems.
Richard ( though a motor trader, 2021/ 2022 was well, 2021.2022, impossible get stock, and could I get a trade Picanto, no ).... Went into Kia thus to test drive a used one to buy one to have as an instructor car
AND LOVED IT !!!
Alas RED D.School didn't want a kia on fleet, SNOBS, said branding couldn't be applied
Fab cars, good for tall drivers, lovely to drive
U ARE BEST
It is remarkable how the trim levels vary from country to country. I have a base model, and I have the features you listed in the GT Line S. I only miss out on cruise, leather seats, and auto climate
They do vary a lot. Colder climates seem to get a heated steering wheel and heated seats lower in the range than warmer climates with some manufacturers.
@@RichardFanders And colder climates dare to sell some entry trims without Air Conditioning (I am looking at you, Hyundai I10), where in southern Europe everything except maybe bottom of the barrel Dacias had A/C as a standard since the early 2000s
Very good car !!!
I got a 2018 model and i absolutely love it! To top it all off it's fuel efficient and fun to drive! 😂 Its 1.2L 3 cylinder dohc engine
I have the 73 model x line s auto brilliant little car
Its good you mention you don't have to press the button to go from drive to neutral. I find it weird that in Fords you do.
Really good review and has helped convince me to go for a test drive with the GT line. But must point out you kept comparing it to a VW Golf.. WHY? They are totally not the same size /type car ? A true/fair comparison is against the VW Up !! Then the VW polo? Other than that a good review from a young driver 👏
look like a fun car, used to drive one few years ago, the noise was really bad back then, not sure if the new model improves it
Damn, I actually want one in Phoenix 😩
Fun car. Would be interesting if you could do a comparison with the Hyundai i10. Very similar car , but a little cheaper , at least here in Sweden.
I will do if I get the opportunity.
I do have the H I - 10, basically the same car, but slightly bigger, both in length and in width, but the top specs is called ,,N - Line", and I can say it's slightly slower - 10,5 sec. 0 - 100, slighly heavier, better looking, and when I bought it, one year half ago, it did brought me an whopping 1 500 Euros discount, as it was a new model !
Good fair review…one slight query ‘tho…why the comparison with a Golf…surely a better comparison would be with say a Polo or similar…I’m nitpicking now I know lol…good review overall 👍
I think the Golf/Leon has one of the better rides when it comes to normal cars. I've owned two Ibiza cars (Polo) and the ride was not as good.
Hi Richard, thanks for the review. When is this facelift launched? And is this five speed auto new in this facelift or it was also on the pre facelift model?
2020 I think. I think the older model had a 4 speed auto.
NICE VIDEO. COMPARES TO HYUNDAI i-10?
Like the look of this but would prefer the turbo version... Perhaps you could do the suzuki ignis manual
Would you choose the manual over the automatic ? My experience with older automated manuals tells me to avoid them , but you seem to be quite impressed with this one.
I have a spare wheel at the back i believe is stock default.. I recently changed Tires which is prolly slightly bigger than previous, will my spare wheel be alright to use?
My mum is looking at one for her new disability car. The GT Line S isn't available and I've warned against the 1.0ltr for motorway use, but it should be sound for general driving in town/city.
Minus the fog lamp audible warning( you shoud get a call back regarding this or it fails an MOT
Better than toyota aygo x and suzuki ignis?
The armrest on the Picanto do slide forward also the headrests adjust forwards and backwards
Ah, I'm pretty sure I tried. Probably didn't try harder enough to move it.
@@RichardFanders use the handle, instead of lifting lid pull it forward
fantastic car that we should be driving daily tbh.
the only question i have is how durable will the kia be? will it last 200,000km and 15 years? surely it can't beat a toyota or honda in that regard....
Keren
I’m from Malaysia and instead of robot manuals, TC autos and CVTs are the norm here (manuals are a dying breed), so I’m wondering if that has to do with fuel consumption / emissions regulations etc that the UK market get robot manuals for a lot of the auto options. FYI, the Picanto here comes with a 1.2 NA 4-cyl with a 4-speed TC auto.
I personally drive a ‘94 Camry with a 4-speed TC and driving it is as simple as “brake to stop, gas to go”, creeping through traffic and parking is no issue, does hills like it has hill hold assist (even though it doesn’t), so I’m curious to know why it isn’t popular over in the UK (at least from what I see on the Internet). It sure is sluggish and indirect compared to a manual (especially for an older model like mine), but it is smooth and has improved a lot over the years.
Anyways, love your videos on both channels, thanks for your many driving advice, it helped me a lot! Good video as always and keep up the good work! Cheers!
I think the main reason robotised manuals largely replaced planetary torque convertor automatics was because of efficiency and price.
can you tell me if you dont mind where to purchase spear wheel kit thanks
What are you up to these days. You need to get videos out more often. Please try some mainstream cars also 😊
I used to have an auto DSG VW polo….twin clutch robotronic.
Fine on the open road, fun even, but not great in town.
Also the transition from stationary to moving….as per this video…the auto clutch was too sudden….traction control wasn’t great and would easily wheel spin pulling away quickly or in snow/ice.
Had hill assist and slight inclines weren’t steep enough to activate the hill assist, and w/out a torque converter or equivalent on a cvt (which Honda use)….the car would roll backwards slightly and probably wheel spin slightly when it eventually figures out you want to go forward.
Likewise the creep was too sudden and too fast.
If you’re used to driving a regular automatic or even a cvt, you had better test drive an automated manual before you commit to buying.
One thing that's never mentioned in reviews (understandably as it's not really something most people care about and I only think if it because my parents have a disabled friend) is the weight of the doors. My parents have a friend who is disabled and every car she's had she's had difficulty opening the doors because of her rheumatoid. She's just ordered one of these because the doors are so light and there is an automatic version. She had a smart car on motability but she had to return it because its electric and she can't work the connector because it hurts too much.
Although you are one of the eat reviewers I've watched because you talk about things people actually care about unlike a lot of car reviews.
Does your parents friend drive the car or get driven around? I have huge respect for them i'm just saying because you talk about their delicacy, one of the major requirements when driving is to be able to perform an emergency stop as well as quick steering when needed. Someone who is frail can be a dangerous driver.
@@rufusgreenleaf2466 no. She's had loads of crashes too but she's a bit loopy
@@zaixai9441 Oh dear, hope she gets cared for.
@@rufusgreenleaf2466 she used to have carers but she was always out and missed them and she cancelled them. She's 76 but has the soul of a 20 year old.
Thank you for your suggestion. I will try to include that if I remember.
February 2023: My dealer says they’re not making the X model any more. Also, the price has gone up since you made this video.
Ahh, well that's the information I had at time of filming.
Very good review so comprehensive.
Just one annoying thing is your use of gas not petrol that confused me for a bit. Speak English please not American.
Could you also review the new Toyota Aygo X please if possible
I hopefully have that coming soon.
@@RichardFanders Thank you
Indeed! I wish people would UNDERSTAND that FWD cars NEVER have dual exhausts. (It's the transverse engine)
In my 2016 Picanto the rear seats fold down into the footwell first before folding down the seat backs so there isn't a big step. Are you sure you couldn't have done this?
I didn't check. But looking at how it folds down, I doubt you can.
Bell end jogger with his back to the traffic 😢😮
I'm going to get one of these. There are few other choices for people who want a small automatic car. Hyundai stopped making the i10 with a fully automatic gearbox (why?).
I don't know why.
The Hyundai i10 now has the same AMT gearbox as the Picanto.
It's fun to see the export specs of my car. Here in Korea, city cars have government tax benefits. Instead, engine size is limited to 1.0 liter. 1.0 liter NA 3-cylinder engine in all trims. If you thought the picanto was a sloth or turtle, the Korean specs might piss you off. 😂😂😂
14:56
The manual can do 60 in 14.1 seconds. Insane how the Automatic is 2.5 seconds slower
My wife has the turbo version of this car (that comes with more kit too) and its a hoot to drive. The non-turbo will be frustratingly slow, particularly when joining quicker roads, overtaking and going up hill.
Someone needs to develop a baby CVT that's used for parking with a robotic manual transmission. That way the clutch'll be really happy.
101%.
On the gt line s how do you get in to display the digital speed in the digital display. I can't find it
I haven't driven the GT-Line S. On this car (GT-Line) it was on the right spoke of the steering wheel.
Seriously thinking of replacing my fiat panda 100 no with one of these.
I would like a go in the 99bhp GT-Line S, I bet that's a lot of fun.
@@RichardFanders my thoughts exactly.
For a car that weighs only 1000kg, 99bhp would feel like a bullet. It would be like a speedy go-kart around country roads.
Indicator stalk is in the left. Why? Especially on a manual car.
That's normal in the UK.
This or a Hyundai i10?
Anyone notice the blue supra
Wait is the transmission dct or single clutch auto ?
Single clutch.
What do you suggest Kia picanto or Toyota Aygo X?
It depends on your priorities. I'd probably go with the Aygo X out of those two.
@Richard Fanders , thank you for your reply. I need a car for commuting and shopping. I don't have small children. maximum speed I drive 50 miles per hour due to a speed lemit, don't drive on motorways.
I known you are in The UK. However. Most DCT Hyundais/Kias (in Australia) have a Hill Hold button on the console behind the auto gear select. Has this Picanto got a 'HILL HOLD'? Thanks for your very good review. 🙂 [ps. I've 'liked' and 'subscribed'.]
It's got hill start assist. A bit different to the "hold" button you get in many cars.
Hold on a minute, is this car being redlined even though its not broken in yet.
Yes, I did think that but I need to test it for the review. That's what happens to demos and press cars.
You should see if your dealership will allow you to "review" an Aston Martin sports car, eh?
I know how that one would go! Whole video would be 0-60 tests and highway "merging" i.e. taking off like a bat out of hell! am I wrong? haha
Haha, they don't usually have such cars. I think I would probably keep the format similar but probably with a bit more time spent on the performance.
Hello sir, how tall are you please??
178cm
This or a mg3
I haven't driven the MG3
@@RichardFanders cheers
Its a shame it's not 6 speed, would have made a difference rpm wise at 70mph.
17k for a picanto 😮
You could pay same for a small Ford but 3 year warranty or 60000 mile😢
@@pjohnson9576 fiestas start at 19k I think
17:46. Don't understand why ppl go jogging on a 60mph country road... Get on a forest trail
£15k is a lot of money for that type of car
They have all gone up in price recently so it's actually competitive for it's class.
