Just a quick video on how to get to the ram slots on a T430 laptop. I got a 2x4gb kit for $18 for the amazon warehouse deals section of amazon.com. Here is a link if you are not familiar-

The warehouse sells open box items (returns, damaged packaging, etc). I try and search it before buying a brand new item, just because it is discounted so much. I saw a 16gb kit for more, but figured I would only need 8gb and at $17 it was an excellent deal. For the T430, you need DDR3 sodimms, mine are 1333mhz but 1600 or 1066 will work as well. 1.35v

I just found this tutorial after I decided to upgrade my T-430, despite the fact that it's almost 6 years old. I like the clear instructions, and I especially like the clear video where everything is taken step-by-step, making what could be a challenging task into one that's fast and easy. My upgrade to 16 gigs went flawlessly. However, after watching the video, I went and picked up a right angled pick. It may not be essential, but it's close. I don't plan to stop using the T-430, although I recently upgraded to a T-470 for work since I travel a lot for eWEEK. The T-430 had become kind of flaky over time, but after some tests, it appeared that there was some kind of disk format problem, so I dropped in an SSD, and while I was at it, more memory. Now it's going to live in my ham radio station. Again, thanks. That was exactly what a tutorial should be.
I just realized that I should have made it clear that the laptop is almost six years old, not the video.

Yes, the T430i can support 2x8GB of ram. When you install the mSata drive, make sure you have the ExpressCache software package installed as well if you want to use it for SSD caching. It is available through the Lenovo site.
This is why I love Thinkpads. You can easily get parts and work on them.

Seofthwa easily? You have to remove the keyboard just to get to the second card. On my HP elitebook I don't even need any tools to access the ram, and they're both in the same spot

Very well put together Laptop or Notebook and on i5 & ssd - 8 gig Ram it's a great machine ,bought mine's in December from a selling site and a very class chap gave me it for £170 as advertised. The amount of thing's that can be done on this machine is amazingly easy as my last HP and Toshiba were ok but flaked out ,this how ever is a great Laptop with a very reliable chipset and all thing's 100% value for my money in 2019 being around 6 years old im a happy man after boosting my Ram to 16 gig in this good video....Thank you so much 10/10

They are for the drip-through keyboard design. They are little channels that allow water to pass through the system if you spill something on the keyboard. Most thinkpads have this feature, I think as far back as the T60, maybe older.
The electronics for those pieces often have a plastic shielding glued to them to give water resistance (on the backside). However, water poured directly onto that area will not have a drip through channel, no. You can get away with some pretty messy spills- just be sure that if it ever happens, turn the laptop off *immediately* and remove the battery. Thoroughly let it dry out, and if you have the ability, remove the keyboard and palmrest to aid in the drying.

I got my T430 this week. ($ 100 in very good conditions) - I want to upgrade to 8 GB RAM.
I have two same RAMS of 4 GB each, from another Lenovo Laptop.
Both install, so I have the best harmony and performance of RAM + Laptop.

4 1/2 years later.... big thank you for posting this. Still using the company laptop (with 3 screens) and was watching grass grow waiting for the damn thing day in and day out... the laptop has a 2.3Ghz i5 chip and a terabyte of storage so it isn't really obsolete just yet.
Haha you got it. The T430 is still very viable with upgraded ram- adding an SSD and bumping the paging file up will help as well. Since its got turbo boost on the i5, keeping it cooler will also help, which can be done by lapping the heatsink and adding a good thermal paste like AS5.
How you doing with it now? (LENOVO T430) Is it powerful for programming or video producing and these kind of big things?

IntoPC for programming i would say its still a good option. The keyboard is very satisfying to use and the i5 isnt a slouch. For video editing, it depends on what youll be doing. Moving clips around in wmm wont be an issue, and simple sound filtering and adding are fine. Adding effects in anything more will probably slow your workflow down, and id want ssd storage, 16gb, and graphics acceleration for that.

Kind of. There is something called the Magma Expressbox. However, it costs ~1k. So realistically, no. Are you running dual channel memory? That will significantly increase onboard graphics performance.

Mine came stock with 8 gigs, but it’s really poor ram, 12800s. Two PC3l sticks. I opened it up and boy, am I glad I did. There was so much dust on the fan. Thanks for this video. Is there better ram I could get?
Thank you for insisting that to reseat the RAM if it doesn't recognize. I upgraded my L430 from 4GB to 2 x 8 and many sites emphatically state the this machine only recognizes 8GB max while others say it will easily see 16GB. My machine had the 4GB under the keyboard and none in the bottom. I figured I would try to see if I could get it to see 16 and bought a 2 x 8GB kit on Amazon. . After installation of both, system saw only 8GB. To test, I removed the bottom stick to see if it still saw the 8GB in the top and on start up it beeped and black screened like you indicated it may in your video. I lifted the keyboard out and reseated the stick several times (click in-click out-click in) put it all back to gather and WHAM! 16 GB.... THANKS!

What does task manager report? Right click anywhere on the bottom bar and click 'start task manager'. Under Physical Memory it should say something like 16384MB. If it only reports about 8000, then it is possible one of the sticks is not fully seated- I would remove both sticks and reseat them.

So, I'm planning to upgrade my laptop ( T430i 4GB RAM ) I want to add the memory and one mSTAT, do you know whether can I take the initial memory card out then add two new one each one is 8GB, and in addition, i add an mSTAT in mPCI slot, do you think my thought is practical ?

Dogstar just the two screws- stick a pick under one corner, pry up gently and that side will pop out, then the other side will be easy

I have a T430s and would like to upgrade the RAM as well from 4GB to 8GB. If I want to upgrade it directly to a single piece 8GB RAM, do I have to seat it inside (under the keyboard) or outside?
You can do either, no performance difference
i need your help brother, i have two lenovo t430, the other one has a screen back light problem or failure, by trying to fix it i have replaced the inverter but still same results. And the other thinkpad refuses to accept several i5, i3 core processors that i have tried, it just does not show up on the screen my RAM slots are both working properly.
For the first one- how do you know its the backlight? Plug in an external monitor and verify that the display shows correctly. Then, reboot, unplug the monitor and shine a flashlight on the laptop display to validate that the image is showing correctly. If it is, test the leads of the inverter with a multimeter. It is possible you got a bad inverter even if buying new- its happened to me. For the second one, how do you know the boot issue is the cpu? Rarely have I seen cpus fail (only twice in the last 10 years). If its on the original spec sheet there is no reason it wouldn't accept it. Black screen is generally unseated ram, bad ram slot, or bad motherboard (assuming you've tried an external display).

I just purchased the t430, what are all the small holes that run entirely on the bottom of the machine? Are they vents or something?
I'm installing in the keyboard slot and show only the black screen. They are two memories of 4gb each with the same bus 12800...
Both memories work when I install them in the rear slot, but when I install it in the front slot (keyboard) it does not work even the original memory... What can i do? please!
It's some kind of eror
This type of problem is likely due to poorly seated memory- double check that it is all the way in there. If you are sure that it is, it sounds like the slot is dead.
Do you know if the touchpad, ultra nav buttons, and fingerprint reader are also water resistant?

You can update the bottom of the computer with no issues.

Hey I want to upgrade my thinkpad T430 Ram but I saw it only supports 16GB and by default the Laptop has 4 GB, if I add the two 8GB cards into my computer, I'll have a total of 20GB of ram ¿Is the laptop going to support that amount??
You will need to take out the 4gb as the laptop only has 2 slots

I'm not sure if thinkpads can run the ddr4 rams. I was shifting my house and I left my thinkpad 420 behind in the old house, leaving it to the home shifters to bring it to the new house. They probably punched it and broke the e on the Lenovo logo. These thinkpads are great machines but the Pakistani people shifting our house were terrible. The processor makes weird noises now and I have tried everything including upgrading the ram to 8gb, but I knew it can be upgraded to 16 gb as the intel processor site says so. Good luck make sure you change the settings on windows from automatic system page file to manual and make sure you would be using more than 8gb ram( by opening as many windows as possible and checking the ram usage in task manager). good luck don't leave your laptop behind incase your shifting certain people cant tolerate thinkpads.

@@timmynye6835 You can't upgrade the internal GPU unless you swap the entire motherboard with a version which includes the dedicated Nvidia 5400M GPU and updated CPU/GPU cooler. External GPUs should work in theory but will be limited to PCIe x1.
