Great thing about Volvo is that you can own a very nice car, even a reasonably high performance one and nobody will suspect you are into cars. So nobody will bother you with conversations about cars when you'd rather not have them :)
This is hilariously accurate. In my E39 M sport 525i (typical dickhead car) people assume I'm going to be a prick and are often visibly surprised and confused when I let them in or indicate properly etc. In my W140 S Class everybody is very nice to me (and I return the favour). My Dad's S60 and my Mum's XC60 are also treated nicely by other drivers

wow.... well, have a look at the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, then... Not only does it have a bigger battery pack so that it can go 1.5-2 times further on all-electric than the Volvo T8s can, but it uses both the V6 engine and the electric motor to power all 4 wheels. Volvo PHEVs fall way short of perfection, in comparison, and the performance and comfort and infotainment system do not match up, either.

It seems like that's all anyone cares about nowadays. You look at the run-down of almost all car reviews and the first things mentioned are always shit about the infotainment, phone compatibility, whatever safety features they have, etc. and things like engine, suspension, and brake specs are always the last thing mentioned. It's sad when you think about it.

A 1999 minivan review in automobile magazine WOULD spend half the time on seats cupholders etc , they would focus tge other half on suspension ride , power and handling characteristics go watch all the old Motorweek reviews on here , see that it was mostly about 1/4 mile, steering, slolom speed , even for econoboxes.

I hired an S90 a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely incredible. I always fancied some big German V8 as my next car, but after driving the Volvo I can’t see any reason why I would want anything else. Really really impressed with it, it was the Inscription AWD and it fuckin’ flew and was as comfy as anything else I’ve been in before.
What did you expect from Doug? I watch him because of that, for the actual technical review, you really need to rethink your choices if you watch Doug.
If you have ever watched Doug you would know he focuses on quirky features, which makes him one of the most interesting reviewers. He made a review on an early 1990s Toyota van cool.

Doug used to get more technical, but over the years he's intentionally scaled down the technical stuff in the videos since he noticed that a large part of his viewers are non-car people who wouldn't care about those things anyways. He mentioned that in one of his earlier More Doug videos. That's why his channel has so many subscribers, because it has a more broad appeal. It's not to everyone's liking, but at almost 3 million subscribers you can't deny that he found a formula that works.

Before the 60 R's, there were the 850's, heck, the 142s's and the 240 and 740 turbo's were quite sporting back in their day as well. While its not what they are necessarily known for it, they have quite a history of sporty cars.

@@julianfrei.8617 180km is the new standard, of course when you order or after you can have it removed, but it will help people get a Volvo easier as their first car due to the low insurance cost, this will not in any way slow down the acceleration, they will still be the same 0-60 in about 5,5sec on a normal V60 with the smaller engine (T5) and about 4.3 sec with the bigger ones.

Just to clarify what Doug said, this car WILL be available for regular sale starting from the 2020 model year. Volvo will put it into regular production and make V60 and XC60 versions of it as well. My dealer has ordered one of each!

As usual some comments about Volvo Cars being Chinese. 1) Yes, Volvo Cars (not trucks, buses, marine, construction equipment etc) is owned by Chinese Geely but almost nobody said Volvo Cars was American when it was owned by Ford. I would still call it Swedish since the company headquarters are still in Gothenburg. 2) Is Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover Indian? Is Chrysler Italian (or Dutch/British)? Was Rolls-Royce German? Is Opel French? Is the Audi TT Hungarian because it's assembled in Hungary? 3) There has been talk about Volvo Cars going public (again). If any investor would buy a majority of the shares would people then say that the company is a company from the country of this majority share holder? If no single owner has more than 50% of the shares what country would the company then "belong to"?
Same opinion. Volvos have definitely a Swedish signature. Like Land Rover and Mazda, this is one of the brands that reflects the most where they come from in their cars.
@Face in the Crowd I have an 850. I really liked the 240s but the 850 is superior in almost any way. The 240 boat engines sounded great though, and you would have to hear the noise (inside the car) of a GLT driven hard to believe it. Alton Towers every day! Considering having more money, and having looked hard there is ONLY the 6Ltr Merc. of the same age that I would consider (or perhaps a pre-Borg Defender). If I could afford $100k I would get a Lucra. None of the Borg cars interest me in fact they repulse me. If I had £150k I would buy a new build 1938 model Brough Superior SS100 and forget about driving cars.

First off, nice review! However, I do like to add a few things I believe Doug forgot or didn't really do justice ;) Doug did mentioned the sound in the car but forgot to mention that this sound option is only available with the Bower & Wilkins sound system, a €3000 ($3.200 USD) option; an option which adds 15 speakers, 10 channel amplifier and 1100w output which adds an all around amazing sound experience. He talks about not having climate vents in the backseats middle console, but having 4-zone climate package will add those along with a touch sensitive display for setting rear seat heater and temperature. Doug talks about not having a "power trunk", but that option is available... that is what that "greyed out" button is for. E.g. my S90 has it. Doug talks about the gage cluster and that it is not so much changeable, but there is a lot more you can change. Depending on the Theme and drive mode set, it'll adapt the gage clusters colors and content. In the middle of the display you can choose to have nothing, map or multimedia. Also,, not to forget, you can have nappa ventilates seats. It cannot be chosen for R-design models I believe, but does work with the luxury package. Bottomline, although this is a rather favourable review by Doug on the Volvo there are a few assumptions Doug makes. The S60 T8 Polestar Doug reviews is not the fully equipped model, it is rather a standard Polestar model with a few upgrades.
Rohan Wadhwa no, rather a Volvo enthusiast having a MY17 S90 Inscription D5 AWD Polsestar and a MY19 XC60 Inscription Pro T5 AWD. I very much doubt this is a fully equipped version, however I don’t fully know the US specs, but looking at the inscription us model, there should be way more to choose from.
The blank button is for the XC90. There is no glovebox lever so you need to press the button which is designated to electronically open the glovebox. In addition, the second button (on the left) next to the lock button is for electronic lift gate. other Volvos have power trunks and so to save costs, they just make their cars with blank buttons rather than machine new casings/ button shapes
Disagree slightly with the cool factor. My inner old man has always thought sporty volvos were really cool especially today when 1/3 cars are a bmw/benz/audi. Very rare as well I would have given it a 7/10.
6 max. At the end of the day it's a Volvo so the general public won't give it too much attention. It will most likely age very well and retain popularity for its rarity and quirkiness.
Not really. The really T8 has more power than a 340i by large margins (though I'd be willing to bet its much slower). Technically, the T6 is the direct competitor to the 340i and c43 in terms of price and performanceish. A T6 is much cheaper than those vehicles for a base model, but that's because you can get it without many options. When configured to have similar tech and performance options as one of those two germans, it's over 60k. Same with the T8. These polestars are going to be much more expensive than 65k when they are actually configured with options. The fact of the matter is, Volvo should not be producing any "sport" vehicles. They're overworking that poor 2L, and from every review I've seen the 4 cylinder is absurdly laggy and just not all that great to drive (in T5 turbo form, T6 twincharge form, and T8 Twin charge hybrid).
@@wristoww I would agree that the T8 is a bit ''stretched'', however when you think about it Mercedes are using a 2.0 in the A45 and it's okay. In reality, here the transmission is bearing the load of the electric torque. In addition, Polestar as a brand has a racing pedigree, why shouldn't they produce sporty saloon? This car should not be compared to M3 or C63, because it doesn't. The C43 is 385hp and as an idea for a slightly sporty saloon is on par with this one. It's made for people who don't want the simple solution from Germany (even though the Germans are quite good). The main bonus point for the model (especially in Europe ) is that Volvo gives you the opportunity to buy a 400+ hp car and skip the high taxes associated with powerful cars. In many countries on the old continent we pay huge taxes for more potent cars. However, if you buy a hybrid, all is well. you can enter the city center without paying and etc. Think of it as you think about the Panamera Turbo S, nobody really needs it, cause it's very heavy and if you are looking for a sporty drive you are better off with the simple Turbo. If you buy it in Europe, you can go around all week from home to work without spending a peny and charge it at home, and still have 670 hp.
It’s likely the reason it is being compared to the M3 or an AMG is because Polestar is Volvo’s version of a tuning branch like M and AMG. The R-Design would probably be more comparable to the 335i or C43 in price and power.
I have had a Volvo T8 for about a year now and that shifter was a little confusing at first but after a few weeks of driving the car it almost became muscle memory and I never have to look at the instrument panel anymore to see what gear I'm in.
I love Volvos, had a 2005 S60R with every option, including the cool body kit. That car was fast, fun, and comfortable. Except for maintenance costs, I have not found a better combination for a sedan.
Love it. As a child of the 70's when my self and my twin brother exhausted mum/ dad's patients, a swift stamp on the brake pedal was enough to send us into the back of the front seats as a punishment(pity they didn't realise we actually looked forward to the sliding.

I love how the Swedish people are so not show off’s and down to earth and build some awesome cars. Definitely one of the safes cars out there...I love the blue all wheel drive S60 that’s over 500 horsepower. They definitely build sleepers and well respected automobiles..

Many cars (entire VAG lineup...) change their consumption indicator to "GPH" (l/h) automatically each time you stop at a traffic light. It's very useful if you are stuck (e.g. in a traffic jam or in a Swedish snow blizzard) and possibly low on fuel as you can calculate for how LONG the engine can support you with heating/cooling and electricity.

It looks bold, powerful and sturdy... really well-made... sort of like Thor's hammer, which was what they were going for, I'd bet. This thing says "I'm able to punch your teeth in and I'd do it in style" It's basically the classiest design for a sedan on the market at this time. This design deserves a 9 out of 10. And the coolness factor is a fucking 10. It's a wolf, not in sheep's clothing, but in a tailored suit. Which is one of the coolest things I can think of ^^

Not a word about the Öhlins dampers!!! If you would have adjusted them (which is done manually) you would have noticed that this car can transform from a comfortable going-to-work car to a very dynamic and "sporty" car with handling well in level and maybe even better than the the top cars in the class (BMW M3).
I had M3 and drove polestar S60 along the weekend (my friend's car) No way to compare it with M3. Not a single way. S60 Polestar doesn't even feel like a true sports car at all. M3 is totally in a different world. You would understand my words when you try both and see.

Doug used to get more technical, but over the years he's intentionally scaled down the technical stuff in the videos since he noticed that a large part of his viewers are non-car people who wouldn't care about those things anyways. He mentioned that in one of his earlier More Doug videos. That's why his channel has so many subscribers, because it has a more broad appeal. It's not to everyone's liking, but at almost 3 million subscribers you can't deny that he found a formula that works.

Before the 60 R's, there were the 850's, heck, the 142s's and the 240 and 740 turbo's were quite sporting back in their day as well. While its not what they are necessarily known for it, they have quite a history of sporty cars.

@@julianfrei.8617 180km is the new standard, of course when you order or after you can have it removed, but it will help people get a Volvo easier as their first car due to the low insurance cost, this will not in any way slow down the acceleration, they will still be the same 0-60 in about 5,5sec on a normal V60 with the smaller engine (T5) and about 4.3 sec with the bigger ones.

Just to clarify what Doug said, this car WILL be available for regular sale starting from the 2020 model year. Volvo will put it into regular production and make V60 and XC60 versions of it as well. My dealer has ordered one of each!

1) Yes, Volvo Cars (not trucks, buses, marine, construction equipment etc) is owned by Chinese Geely but almost nobody said Volvo Cars was American when it was owned by Ford. I would still call it Swedish since the company headquarters are still in Gothenburg.
2) Is Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover Indian? Is Chrysler Italian (or Dutch/British)? Was Rolls-Royce German? Is Opel French? Is the Audi TT Hungarian because it's assembled in Hungary?
3) There has been talk about Volvo Cars going public (again). If any investor would buy a majority of the shares would people then say that the company is a company from the country of this majority share holder? If no single owner has more than 50% of the shares what country would the company then "belong to"?

@Face in the Crowd I have an 850. I really liked the 240s but the 850 is superior in almost any way. The 240 boat engines sounded great though, and you would have to hear the noise (inside the car) of a GLT driven hard to believe it. Alton Towers every day! Considering having more money, and having looked hard there is ONLY the 6Ltr Merc. of the same age that I would consider (or perhaps a pre-Borg Defender). If I could afford $100k I would get a Lucra. None of the Borg cars interest me in fact they repulse me.

First off, nice review! However, I do like to add a few things I believe Doug forgot or didn't really do justice ;)
Doug did mentioned the sound in the car but forgot to mention that this sound option is only available with the Bower & Wilkins sound system, a €3000 ($3.200 USD) option; an option which adds 15 speakers, 10 channel amplifier and 1100w output which adds an all around amazing sound experience.
He talks about not having climate vents in the backseats middle console, but having 4-zone climate package will add those along with a touch sensitive display for setting rear seat heater and temperature.
Doug talks about not having a "power trunk", but that option is available... that is what that "greyed out" button is for. E.g. my S90 has it.
Doug talks about the gage cluster and that it is not so much changeable, but there is a lot more you can change. Depending on the Theme and drive mode set, it'll adapt the gage clusters colors and content. In the middle of the display you can choose to have nothing, map or multimedia.
Also,, not to forget, you can have nappa ventilates seats. It cannot be chosen for R-design models I believe, but does work with the luxury package.
Bottomline, although this is a rather favourable review by Doug on the Volvo there are a few assumptions Doug makes. The S60 T8 Polestar Doug reviews is not the fully equipped model, it is rather a standard Polestar model with a few upgrades.

The blank button is for the XC90. There is no glovebox lever so you need to press the button which is designated to electronically open the glovebox. In addition, the second button (on the left) next to the lock button is for electronic lift gate. other Volvos have power trunks and so to save costs, they just make their cars with blank buttons rather than machine new casings/ button shapes
Disagree slightly with the cool factor. My inner old man has always thought sporty volvos were really cool especially today when 1/3 cars are a bmw/benz/audi. Very rare as well I would have given it a 7/10.

6 max. At the end of the day it's a Volvo so the general public won't give it too much attention. It will most likely age very well and retain popularity for its rarity and quirkiness.
You shoudn‘t compare it to a M3 or a C63. A 335i or a C43 is the better choice to compare it with.

Not really. The really T8 has more power than a 340i by large margins (though I'd be willing to bet its much slower). Technically, the T6 is the direct competitor to the 340i and c43 in terms of price and performanceish. A T6 is much cheaper than those vehicles for a base model, but that's because you can get it without many options. When configured to have similar tech and performance options as one of those two germans, it's over 60k. Same with the T8.
These polestars are going to be much more expensive than 65k when they are actually configured with options.
The fact of the matter is, Volvo should not be producing any "sport" vehicles. They're overworking that poor 2L, and from every review I've seen the 4 cylinder is absurdly laggy and just not all that great to drive (in T5 turbo form, T6 twincharge form, and T8 Twin charge hybrid).
@@wristoww I would agree that the T8 is a bit ''stretched'', however when you think about it Mercedes are using a 2.0 in the A45 and it's okay. In reality, here the transmission is bearing the load of the electric torque. In addition, Polestar as a brand has a racing pedigree, why shouldn't they produce sporty saloon?
This car should not be compared to M3 or C63, because it doesn't. The C43 is 385hp and as an idea for a slightly sporty saloon is on par with this one. It's made for people who don't want the simple solution from Germany (even though the Germans are quite good).
The main bonus point for the model (especially in Europe ) is that Volvo gives you the opportunity to buy a 400+ hp car and skip the high taxes associated with powerful cars. In many countries on the old continent we pay huge taxes for more potent cars. However, if you buy a hybrid, all is well. you can enter the city center without paying and etc. Think of it as you think about the Panamera Turbo S, nobody really needs it, cause it's very heavy and if you are looking for a sporty drive you are better off with the simple Turbo. If you buy it in Europe, you can go around all week from home to work without spending a peny and charge it at home, and still have 670 hp.
It’s likely the reason it is being compared to the M3 or an AMG is because Polestar is Volvo’s version of a tuning branch like M and AMG. The R-Design would probably be more comparable to the 335i or C43 in price and power.

I have had a Volvo T8 for about a year now and that shifter was a little confusing at first but after a few weeks of driving the car it almost became muscle memory and I never have to look at the instrument panel anymore to see what gear I'm in.

I love Volvos, had a 2005 S60R with every option, including the cool body kit. That car was fast, fun, and comfortable. Except for maintenance costs, I have not found a better combination for a sedan.

Many cars (entire VAG lineup...) change their consumption indicator to "GPH" (l/h) automatically each time you stop at a traffic light. It's very useful if you are stuck (e.g. in a traffic jam or in a Swedish snow blizzard) and possibly low on fuel as you can calculate for how LONG the engine can support you with heating/cooling and electricity.

The Chinese may own Volvo, but unlike Ford they are allowing the Swedes to do their thing so this is designed in Sweden and is then build on Volvo's factory in the US.

I have a Volvo 850 R 1996 Volvo always had a hand in making sport cars and before that I had a Volvo 740 turbo
Not a word about the Öhlins dampers!!! If you would have adjusted them (which is done manually) you would have noticed that this car can transform from a comfortable going-to-work car to a very dynamic and "sporty" car with handling well in level and maybe even better than the the top cars in the class (BMW M3).

I had M3 and drove polestar S60 along the weekend (my friend's car)
No way to compare it with M3. Not a single way.
S60 Polestar doesn't even feel like a true sports car at all. M3 is totally in a different world.
