  • From ‘CHANNELLING THE BEAT!’ book:
06-03-69 - ‘Top Of The Pops’ (UK): The First Of May (Robin Gibb didn’t hide his dislike of this song, and, as it featured Barry singing without harmonies and Robin didn’t play any instruments, he just sat there during this performance doing absolutely nothing. Sadly, Robin quit the band shortly after this, not reuniting with the others until 18 months later)_________________________________________________
‘CHANNELLING THE BEAT! (The Ultimate Guide to UK '60s Pop on TV)' book:
With 30 years of research, over 700 info-packed pages, and a foreword by Peter Noone, Mike Pender, Tony Crane MBE, Brian Poole, Steve Ellis& Billie Davis,‘Channelling The Beat!’ more than lives up to its subtitle 'The Ultimate Guide to UK ‘60s Pop on TV'!
Profiled are over 150 “British Invasion” artists. These include the post ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll of Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and The Tornados; the beat explosion of The Beatles, The Tremeloes and Herman’s Hermits; the rhythm ‘n’ blues of The Rolling Stones, The Pretty Things and The Who; and the psychedelia of The Pink Floyd, Procol Harum and Traffic, not forgetting the girl singers such as Cilla Black, Billie Davis and Dusty Springfield.
Amongst the 100’s of legendary shows featured are the UK’s ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’, ‘Top of The Pops’ and ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’, the US’s ‘The Ed Sullivan Show, ‘Shindig!’ and ‘Hullabaloo’, Europe’s ‘Beat Club’, ‘Popside’ and ‘Twien’, and 100’s of more!
So, whether you have just a casual interest in ‘60s music and culture, or you're a more serious researcher and historian, this is the book for you!
‘This is my favourite book… a brilliant look at who and why. I can’t put it down!’ PETER NOONE (Herman's Hermits)
'Well done Peter, you’ve reminded us just how famous we all were!' MIKE PENDER (The Searchers)
‘This book is a fantastic reference archive… a ‘must have’ book for any music lovers’ TONY CRANE MBE (The Merseybeats)
‘It is my pleasure to be a part of this book, so have a great read and enjoy!’ BRIAN POOLE (Brian Poole and The Tremeloes)
'A concise and extremely well researched tome!' STEVE ELLIS (Love Affair)

    When I was small
    And Christmas trees were tall
We used to laugh while others used to play
    Don't ask me why
But time has passed us by
Someone else moved in from far away
    Now we are tall
    And Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
    But you and I
    Our love will never die
To kiss and cry, "Come, first of May"
The apple tree that grew for you and me
I watched the apples falling one by one
And I recall the moment of them all
The day I kissed your cheek and you were gone
    Now we are tall
    And Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
    But you and I
    Our love will never die
To kiss and cry, "Come, first of May"

This clip survives thanks to a member of The Lulu Fan Club as Lulu appeared on the same show singing 'Boom Bang-a-Lang'. I think this is only one of a very few editions of TOTP presented by Alan Freeman that still exist. Great song by The Bee Gees but you can clearly see why Robin Gibb hates the song. He must've felt like a spare part not doing anything whilst Barry and Maurice are performing the song.

@@williebowen2965when Barry sang this they were husband and wife. But years later in 2002 Lulu asked Maurice to come on her show and sing this with her. She even cheekily asked him if he had learned the song that she had sent him that they were going to do 😂. She knew darn well that he and Barry had written it. They then sang this together while he played the piano like in this video and oh man it took my breath away and left me in tears. They were phenomenal. Left ya feeling like they really never got over each other even though they had both been happily remarried to other people. Then just a few months after that performance is when Maurice was gone. He died.

Because the Bee Gees were going bankrupt and their music was already considered out of fashion in the mid-70s. So they hired an Arab producer who was an expert in the kind of sounds that were booming at the time: R&B and Disco Music. Therefore, Barry, Robin and Maurice needed to change the way they sing and use a falsetto to differentiate their songs. And it worked very well commercially, even with the haters.

@@user-gq6zp3zu4yYep. He was constantly in pain starting at a pretty young age, including in concerts. He tried to hide it from the crowd but you can still see it on his face and in his eyes. Maurice said he could see it, too. Maurice had his eye on him a lot. It’s so tragic! It’s the fourth tragedy in their family. But he’s managed to live with it all this time. He has longevity, like his mom, perhaps, or hopefully even longer. I hope, however, that he feels good the whole time.

My personal favorite was the back side of the single released in Europe „Lamplight“. I was also 16 years old, first time in youth clubs and discos dancing on Lamplight tight with the girls what we called in German „Schmuseblues“. But als the girls loved Lampligt. Never forget, we all had long hairs like Robin or Barry and when our hairs get in contact (mine I must say) with the hairs of the girls on Lamplight you (me) could hear a very special „Klirr“. It starts with the very high frenquencies of the beginning of Lamplight. courious with the first phrases in French Dam dadadada daam, dam dadadada daam…. Alons, viens encore, cherie.
