    The Surge is a Dark Souls-like game in a Sci-Fi setting from the developer of Lords of the Fallen. It's got a non-traditional loot system, a non-traditional level-up and equipment system.
    A catastrophic event has knocked you out during the first day on the job… you wake up equipped with a heavy-grade exoskeleton, in a destroyed section of the complex. Robots gone haywire, insane augmented co-workers and rogue AI - everything wants you dead.
    Defy deadly enemies and huge bosses in tight, visceral melee combat. Target and slice specific limbs off your foes, with a next-gen loot system where you loot what you dismember. Equip, upgrade and craft new weapons and armors sliced from enemies, and make yourself stronger through a fresh take on leveling-up.

    I saw the white cylinders before the black cerberus boss fight and by looking at their display I figured out it was some kind of medical equipment, and when i saw black Cerberus healing he was using one of them, and that's how I figured that you need to destroy those things so I had no problems with him.

    I loved The Surge's mechanics: the fast paced constant dashing, the hit-and-run tactics, and the need to commit to combos only when you are absolutely certain you can. I focused on one-hand weapons a lot, which don't have many of the issues you mention -- it's mostly fast and precise. Twin-rigged also has real fast combos you can use and get out, I thought. There is a ton of variety in the movesets since they also change depending on which body part you target. There are combos, though, that I learned only so I WOULDN'T touch them ever again, hah. Single-rigged and heavy two hander seemed like they'd be awfully frustrating against bosses and fast enemies so I didn't even try.
    I can very much relate to not figuring out certain things and getting super salty as a result, which will color the rest of the game and predispose you to being much less forgiving. I didn't get stuck at any of the points you described, but I can see how it could've happened and maybe then I wouldn't have loved this game so much.
    I'm surprised you didn't mention the level design structure-wise, I'd say it's one of the game's big strengths (until you get to the last level and it's all horrible maintenance corridors). Not so great the lack of variety in scenery, though...
    The saddest part for me was how it tried SO HARD to have Dark Souls-style NPC stories. Bleak bleak death crazy death bleak everyone died tragedy! All that was missing was the half-hearted despairing laughs.
    Great job on the video, the conclusion is pretty much exactly what I felt too in the end.

    The first boss method is revealed by carefully observing graffiti in the level on the way to it. The spider bots have some of the most obvious telegraphing in the game- audio cues. A recent patch has added the ability to cancel your combos at certain points if you have the stamina, though to be fair this wasn't the case when this video was made. Also, juggling which attacks deal multiple swings (which only happen deeper into combos and not with all weapons) is about learning which movesets you like. Im getting into your videos but a lot of the criticisms in this one seem misguided at best.

    The Surge was a huge "meh" for me. I played every Souls title including Bloodborne and Sekiro, beat every boss (including DLC ones, optional ones and hidden ones like DS2's Dark Lurker), and I absolutely love the formula so much, whenever somebody just as much as claims a game to be like Dark Souls, I get a huge ladyboner. So needless to say, when The Surge came out, I instantly picked it up, but it never really clicked for me. The first hour or so was exciting, but I quickly came to hate that there was no animation cancelling, and Jesus Christ, the damage you take from making one mistake is just way, WAY off - something you'll quickly learn in the second area. Not only that, there's a ton of non-telegraphed ambushes (like some guy randomly hiding behind a crate) that are nearly guaranteed to oneshot you, so you're left off wondering "Well thanks, how was I supposed to react to that?"
    And then the game commits one of the biggest sins I know of - having bosses that don't respawn drop weapons that come in different qualities. I don't really remember if you had to meet some kind of condition or if it was just random, but again you're left wondering how you're supposed to know that the first time you beat the boss. Add to that endless corridors that nearly look the same, no, scratch that, the whole game nearly looking the same in most areas, and you're just left feeling that maybe, just replaying DS would be a better use of your time. I love hard games - but not when they're unfair.

    Everyone today thinks that to make a game as great as Dark Souls, you just need to make a game impossibly hard and lacking information, but thats not what Souls does, it combines being hard but beatable while having easy to learn-on-your-own mechanics. Its really hard to combine all these factors as well as Dark Souls does, and like The Surge, most games end up falling apart.

    I actually recently finished The Surge. And I enjoyed the game. But I recognize my play-style isn't common for most people.
    I've played the entire Dark Souls trilogy to completion, Bloodbourne, Lords of the Fallen, and I've never felt a great deal of difficulty from the games. But it's because I know my limits as a player, I am gifted with a great deal of patience. But nothing frustrates me more than feeling like I'm figuratively banging my head against a brick wall and making little to no progress against an enemy boss. Which is why my approach to the Dark Souls series, and every game that tries to mimic it's difficulty stays the same. I grind, a lot! I will grind introductory (perhaps even tutorial) levels for as long as necessary, until I have leveled up to about 150% of my starting health, and increased my stamina so that I have 2 additional swings to the starting weapon. I don't care if it takes hours, I'll put in the early investment if it means less of the later frustrations. I need what I call - "a comfortable margin of error". I want to go into that boss fight feeling like I could take it's power moves, and still have enough health left, so that I can Estus/Blood Vial/Health Potion/Vital Injection my health back up after it's done doing it's moves. And if any point in game afterwards, if I feel like I'm struggling too much with a new regular enemy, I'll go back to grinding again, for as long as it takes. Because my general intuition tells me, if a regular enemy is giving me trouble, the next boss is probably going to demolish me.
    I know that doesn't sound fun but I feel I get more enjoyment overall with my method. The way I see it, the boss can still be difficult, and I'll probably die a few times still, but I'll last long enough in the battle to find out what makes it tick, and I'll beat it with a handful of tries, and sure enough that's what tends to happen.
    I still remember hearing from friends when Dark Souls 3 came out about how difficult the Nameless King boss was in Dark Souls 3, and how I'd want to scream in frustration when I finally got to fighting him, and how I'd likely lose to him several times like they had. But I did what I normally do, I did the grind, slow and steady, and by the time I reached the Nameless King, I was able to take his hits and stay in the fight long enough to see all his different stages/combos. It took me 7 tries to beat him, that was it. Which is a high number for me, but it was nothing ridiculous.
    I'll just never understand stories about bosses that took 20 or 30 tries to beat in games like these. I mean, why put yourself through that?

      for this specific boss you dont even need to grind that much, you just need to invest all your modules in to health, healing and stamina, when i arrived at this boss i had 12 mk III heal injects and a health bar was huge i could just combo him to death and he just summoned 3 pax or 4 pax

    • @PsYkoTicxxRipZz

      Grinding in Dark Souls is the game's easy mode. I personally don't have any problem if that's how you want to play it, but for me, if a boss is too easy, it kinda ruins the whole reason the boss was there to begin with. I do understand though not wanting to have to attempt 20+ times at a boss as that just seems infuriating. For me, I never grind in Dark Souls but I am cautious with my souls (I try not to lose any). And in doing so, it keeps the difficulty in that sweet spot (beating the boss in less than 3 tries but with barely any health left) without having to grind. I just generally hate repeating the same level again and again, be it dying multiple times or grinding the area.
      The way I play souls games is I have to kill every single enemies at least once and don't bother killing them again unless I have to if they're blocking my way. Basically, do all the content I can in the area and immediately progress through to the next.
      Also, you can't do this in Sekiro since the only way to increase your stats is to beat bosses and minibosses. The only use of grinding is to unlock more movesets and prosthetic weapon abilities.

      @@akmal94ibrahim I understand if it's not someone else's preferred method of playing. As they say different strokes, for different folks.
      I still haven't played Sekiro, mind you I have it, I just know my play style won't work with it well (from friends telling me). So I'm just waiting... knowing that I will eventually play it and finally know the frustration of having to actually "git gud." :)

    The problem about the boss here is that it is half supposed to be a 'puzzle boss' while also being incredibly hard. The thing about Dark Souls' bosses is that it is always a straightforward fight. It mostly depends on how good your reaction time is and how well you can dodge and attack while managing your stamina and health. The entire game also suffers from its poor animations. Sure, a heavy weapon should have a long wind up and should feel heavy but they put those long and slow animations, that you can't even cancel, in there to create some kind of artificial difficulty.

    I didn't give this game the proper chance for a good year.. Souls is done, wanted to try something new, and it's the free PS Plus game for April 2019. For me, the game picked up interest after the first area. After receiving my drone and getting deeper into the game, I slowly became to love the game after mastering the mechanics. Sure, it can be frustrating at time to fall through a damn grate multiple times but despite its shortcomings, this game is excellent and holds its own. I'm overly joyed that Deck13 is taking the time to master the 'Souls-Like' format, it's fun and rewarding; I want to accomplish everything I possibly can in this game. From being able to collect and cut armor off the opponents to craft on your own, to defeating all the Smelter mini-bosses throughout the world for your opportunity to wear the Ironmaus armor is extremely rewarding.
    If Deck13 continues mastering the formula, as is apparent contrasting Lords of the Fallen to The Surge, I expect The Surge 2 to be nothing short of amazing. I promise you this game is worth sinking time into and can only stand to improve massively from here.

    It is true that your attacks get too windy to be effective and at times you get two or three hits in at best, however, I don't agree that hitting a huge robot on its gravity center to make it fall is unintuitive... It's not relative to other contemporary games just as much as Dark Souls broke the norm in its time.
    Most of the akward, weird boss mechanics are designed to be stumbled upon, however, you can still push through by sheer persistency.

      I'm not seeing it.
      Boss that can't beat hurt outside of a really unintuitive mechanic? All but one of Dark Souls' bosses die to conventional damage and while the Bed of Chaos is pretty widely regarded as the dumbest boss in the game it also doesn't have the body of a normal enemy so isn't exactly difficult to figure out blind. Attack button automatically comboing? I don't believe that happens with any weapon, maybe there's something obscure with that mechanic but none of the "normal" movesets a casual first time player is likely to use will do that. Multi-phase puzzle boss that removes progress while you figure it out? Again, Bed of Chaos is the only thing remotely similar to this and she isn't that similar at all. Random normal enemy that can only be killed by a unique mechanic? ...ok, the ghosts might actually fit that one, but at the very least I seem to recall the information on how to beat them being in the game.

    Just finished this game today. I didn't find it to be as challenging as the creator of this video did; I think i actually died the most against the PAX boss as I didn't know what I was doing. The Black Cerberus boss took maybe three attempts. The final boss took about four or five attempts, but I felt I got really lucky and finished the fight without any healing left (and low life as well). The annoying thing is that the game got a fatal error during the credits which caused me to not get the trophy, and re-booting up the game now just lets me go straight into NG+. I had to watch the fully ending on YT as a result.

  • @Cascadejackal
    @Cascadejackal 5 лет назад +1

    For anyone getting the game now, there's a reliable way to beat down pretty much anything, even with the game's fairly stiff combat system.
    First, get a Twin Rig weapon early on. Later, you can get the Firebug Throttle V2, which is extremely useful, and probably the best weapon in the game until you hit NG+. So, start levelling that Twin Rig proficiency. Play around with the combos, but I've always found Horizontal+Horizontal+Vertical to be great, since it finishes with a spinning move that hits multiple times and, with the Throttle, sets everything on fire.
    Forget about slow, careful play, weighing up your options and adapting to the situation. You're Wolverine now. Get up close and personal, beat the crap out of EVERYTHING. Dodge to the sides, but never back out of lunge range, so you're always keeping the pressure on the enemy. Go for a finisher as fast as you can. Kill everything, rip off their limbs, laugh like a maniac.
    Finishers have a surprisingly long range, and you can hold the button while in the middle of a combo. If you do that, the enemy will survive the combo (even if it should have killed them) and you move straight into a Finisher.
    Health increasing Implants all the way, and instant-use healing Injectables instead of over-time. Use them when you need to, don't hoard them, especially early on. Maybe that one Implant that increases Energy gain, decreases drain and gives you a minimum of 10% Energy, just so you can get those finishers out reliably. Later, there's an Implant that heals after 5 rapid hits, which is obviously useful for the quick-striking Twin Rigs. Just as useful are the implants that restore HP when performing finishers, since those Implants stack. Someone say 40% heal per finisher? Oh yeah!
    You could always use the Heal-with-high-Energy implants and stack Minimum Energy implants to give yourself an extra edge, but it's kinda slow.
    Armor is up to you. I used the DLC's Mantis armor for most of the game, so I could just tank hits while farming scrap, then changed to the Chrysalis gear because the set bonus is that it heals for a percentage of max HP on every kill. A large percentage. I want to say... 10-15 percent, per kill. Not per finisher, per KILL. You can imagine how much HP that is when you're running a build with 800+ HP. The Bloodied Proteus gear works, but it's heal-over-time instead of a single, quick heal after a kill. It does improve all other healing effects, though, so... up to you.
    So, summary:
    Use Twin Rigs. All the Health. Heal-on-Finisher implants. More Health. Set everything on fire. Heal-on-Combo Implant. Some more Health. Kill everything in the face. Get the Healing Armor. Murder everything. Laugh.

      @@kiranis2174 Sure. I just beat the final boss last night, so I had to record everything in NG+, but this is the build I used in the final fight and for the last 8 or so hours of just wandering around killing things. ruclips.net/video/tR3T6yu-7j8/видео.html
      All the implants, weapons and armor are the same level as when I finished the game. Nothing was leveled up for NG+. They'd all been max level for at least 7+ hours, since I'd used it to finish the Good, Bad & Augmented as well (IIRC, I used the Mantis set to finish the CREO-World DLC).
      Really, that much HP and Core Power/Level was a bit of overkill. I'd just been gaining Power/Levels to see how ridiculous I could go before getting bored.
      I got the Chrysalis armor at the earliest opportunity, which made a HUGE difference in how I played. Aggression meant quicker kills, which meant quicker heals, and freed Implant slots for more HP instead of healing, which meant bigger heals from kills.

    I picked up the surge randomly cuz it was free to download. No connection to dark souls or anything I was completely blind to it. I agree with the clunkiness of movement and no weapon/item progression but the pax boss wasn’t a hard thought for me to form. Pretty much as soon as he lifted his leg I thought “surely if I hit the planted one it’ll fall”. I mean you’re standing on one leg and someone kicks the other one out from under you, you’re gonna go down.. I didn’t even realize the missile barrage was a way to drop him I literally just put two and two together. Stand on one leg, damage the planted leg, it’ll lose balance and fall. This mechanic was probably one of the things that kept me playing the game. I had an idea on how to take out a boss and that idea actually worked. It gave me a sense of success and that carried me throughout the game. Another example is the firebug. “Ok attack his arms and maybe they’ll come off and that’s how you end up beating him?” And that’s pretty much exactly how it goes. Like knowing it’s not just about swinging relentlessly just to put a certain amount of damage into the bosses is what made me keep playing

      I wish the game had a tutorial or something which made it clear that it works differently to 99% of the other games out there where you simply play whack-a-mole with the enemy till they run out of health. I think it is a very good idea and concept. But poorly communicated to the player. And in some cases it seems outright unfair where it is borderline to a broken mechanic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing something differently and the idea that you have to figure out how to actually stagger or attack a weak point is great. But let the player know that this is what you have to do in the game, figuring out tactics or I promise you most players will either brute-force their way trough the game or simply give up completely on it because they wonder why it doesn't work like in most games out there.

    • @MrRastawannabe

      CrniWuk I get your point for sure. I just remember playing games back in the day that weren’t even meant to be super challenging like a “souls game” that were basically unbeatable for me. I’d get to a point, not know how to continue, try my ass off for hours on hours to figure it out, give up, come back a few days later and rinse and repeat and it made me play the game so much longer. Like yes it was frustrating in the moment but figuring it out and beating a boss or a level with zero guidelines and no “easy mode” and no internet to just straight up google the level or something was like a euphoric moment of triumph and accomplishment. This game gave me a little bit of that back cuz there was plenty of trial and error figuring out the level design, enemies, bosses, collecting scrap, upgrades, etc. Like no matter how frustrated I’d get, it always ended in bliss and accomplishment in the end

    • @CrniWuk
      @CrniWuk 5 лет назад +3

      @@MrRastawannabe It's totally the opposite for me here. I am close to beating the game but honestly just lost my interest. I never feelt like I accomplished anything in beating the enemies and bosses in the game like I "learned" now something or I managed to outsmart the enemy. But that's me. It was simply difficult to get any joy out of it. I simply continued to play the game because of the art design and the Sci Fi setting.
      What really kills it for me are some design decisions which are really just there to frustrate the player. Walking in a room and beeing suddenly attacked by 2 enemies at once which have been hidding in a corner or behind crates. Or fighting enemies on very tight platforms and bridges where you can drop of. There was one particular place with 2 enemies with ranges weapons and a ton of other enemies in front of them. Removing them away took ages. And then you die due to some mistake and you have to repeat that part. You can get killed almost randomly because of such mechanics and not because you made a mistake. It's because you encountered a part you simply didn't know before and it's almost impossible to avoid it without getting killed. And that's in my opinion bad design. And it's seriously laughable how easy the game actually becomes once you learn the pattern of the enemies and know where they are hidding. But up till that point it's just getting killed over and over again ..
      I am glad you had fun but in my opinion some of the difficulty in the game is just artificial difficulty and not really from the mechanics.

      CrniWuk that’s true I see that. The game definitely had like ridiculously annoying parts like that. I just thought it was a fun game to go into having no expectations and rising to the challenge of beating it. The surge 2 is out now as well. I’m thinking about getting it but I might wait just a bit to see if people are saying it’s just the surge 1 in a new environment or if there have been improvements made in the game

  • @WolfosoBastardo

    This is very close to my experience with the game, except I sticked with "Heavy-duty" weapons and did nothing but dodge-attacks. You can deal more damage than any quick weapon combo with 1 fast dodge-attack on a heavy weapon.
    Yes, the mechanics in the game are the worst, especially the combo system, it literally makes combos unusable. But there's another thing you haven't talked about: level design.
    It's cool how you unlock tons of shortcuts, but there is no knowing where to go. I found myself walking in circles for hours because lots of exo-lift corridors looked all the same.
    The reason this game kept me hooked was the atmosphere and how rewarding the game is. Dismembering enemies, finding new implants, creating the ideal armor. And yet, I sincerely wish I had quit this game when I started it.

  • @Allodder
    @Allodder 7 лет назад +8

    the weapon combos legit made me quit the game after the first boss. im very happy to see someone else voice this complaint, they make combat feel like a hack and slash(eg diablo 3). While the animations are varied and want to look cool, they remove all impact from the players inputs, since youre never quite sure what your next attack will look like. Furthermore, you are essentially forced to initiate attack chains with a dodge or sprint, because starting up without that takes twice as long.

    I would like to point out that the combat is far more detail oriented. If you use your head you can usually put some real world ideas into a fight and watch it play out. For example, the first boss is far more easily defeated by knocking him down while hes stomping. Bait the multi stomp attack, and attack the leg hes standing on. This will cause him to fall as if hit by missiles, this method also gives you a better weapon.

  • @PadChords
    @PadChords 2 года назад +1

    Finished this last night. The last enemies you analyzed, known as the "Nanite Mass," are indeed annoying. Not only because of the overcharge method not being intuitive or tutorialized or anything, but also because it seems there's a "sweet spot" for you to even see the prompt. You can't be too far, you can't be too close (I think?), and you won't necessarily get it after the first time you lay the enemy out flat. For a game design that gives you the specificity to target individual limbs on most human and even non-human enemies, this enemy design introduces some unwelcome ambiguity to the mix and it ends up spoiling the otherwise serviceable play mechanic loop.
    I didn't spend long on either PAX fight or Black Cerberus though, so I can't say I felt your pain there.
    I'll also say that the last boss (technically second-to-last) was frustrating for similar reasons. You spend the first phase of the fight targeting individual limbs, but when that's done, you have to go back to the overcharge station that started the fight to end it. I'll say that I didn't think to do that until after it beat me my first time getting it down to that point, but after dealing with the Nanite Mass enemies so much, I asked myself, "what's the stupidest thing they could require me to do?" and after getting to that part of the fight again, I wasn't surprised to see that the overcharge station was active again. I _was_ surprised that after the cutscene that played next, my camera was stuck in place and I couldn't see or lock on to the actual last boss, so I died quickly, not being able to see what was going on. Good times.
    The DLC slotted into the normal progression of the game well enough that I didn't even realize I was playing it, but it was easily my favorite area of the game and its last boss...actually, both of the major bosses in the area were fun fights. The last boss has two forms and was easily a better fight than the actual final boss of the game. Folks have a lot of nice things to say about the sequel too, so if the DLC is indicative of the direction the devs were trying to go next, it's worth a look indeed.

    There is a method to trivialize Black Cerberus: Concussion Drone.
    Knock em' down, get in a hit, repeat ad nausem. If you have the Frontier DLC, you can get Omni-Boosts so you can dodge and have a sizable energy pool. I forget if you can get the Turbo Dynamic implants yet, those remove energy decay and increase energy gain. With five of the suckers, you can pretty much drone at will. And infinite heal, with energy-eating injectable.
    Now the biggest problem is having enough power for everything. So you need to exploit how scrap works: When you die, you can increase the size of your recovered scrap by first scoring a high amount of time remaining. About 10 minutes is the cap for that, roughly doubling what you put in. Also, you can a different tech multiplier if you respawn enemies using the Gear Assembly station. The medical station resets your multiplier, so you need a source of renewable health while farming your scrap score.

    "The scorpion dogs attacks aren't telegraphed" this is the point where your review failed me, they do telegraph their attacks, all of them. Rather well and fairly actually, and they don't have much air control at all, only being able to adjust about 10 degrees or so. This is the thing that upsets me about reviews of this game, people get killed by one enemy over and over or can't figure out the puzzle and then they call out the games mechanics. P.A.X for example makes complete sense, he's the only thing that can act as a "roof" for these rockets, so it makes sense to hide under him. Although your points are good it dissolved from a review to a rant, a rather whiny one actually.

The close range tail swipes happen in milliseconds and its kickflip uppercut especially comes out of no where with no prior indication it's coming - and it is also quite happy to spam the kickflip move over and over again. I'm fresh from beating the game so it's still clear in my mind.

    I disagree with your opinion that the game is overall bad, but I do agree with your assertion that the game has difficulties with conveying its mechanics to the player. It tries to do so organically like a Shovel Knight, but rarely does it successfully unfortunately. And in most of the cases it could be fixed easily enough. With the PAX for example, just have an audio log somewhere stating that its legs are a structural weak point or something. Or for the nanomachine enemies have a big core power number appear like it does for all the Overcharge stations up to that point.

  • @Jrez
    @Jrez 5 лет назад +1

    I figured all this out without so much apparent frustration, the first boss is extremely straightforward and I got the special weapon basically by accident on PAX as well as the head of security. I felt the enemy placement was anything but haphazard, and the scorpion dogs are indeed telegraphing their attacks. Bigger weapons stagger faster, if you're trying to stagger with knucks you're gonna be wailing for a while. Like anything in life, you will have the easiest time if you simply accept the rules of the game, submit to the process, and learn.

    I agree with your criticisms. I had to look up most bosses how to guides and died more times than I can count. One thing you didn't mention - completely useless block mechanic, especially in the end game. With proteus gear and block implant, 1 hit from one of these nanite guys takes off all my stamina, but they do a combo of 3+ attacks so I am basically dead if I try blocking anything? I like playing tanky character, and they seemingly give you and option to go for high stability gear, but it's useless.
    NPC design also terrible. Take for example these jumping spider robots, who thought they were fun to fight? And last boss... all about luck and how much healing you have, what a complete crap! The whole game boils down to stacking up on health and healing implants and dodging around the level like a chicken with its head cut off trying to squeeze 1-2 hits and not get obliterated by an enemy combo...
    Also the story... what complete pretentious bs. Compared to Dark Souls which actually had deep meaningful story this is just more of the generic "evil corporations are bad mmkay?" crap. Coupled with copy-paste levels that all look exactly the same... And ending was like...really, that's it? What was even the point of trying?
    I think this game had some interesting points like you stated, but I don't know... it just lacks soul? It's like someone uploaded a "generic future factory tileset" into a random level generator, and pressed "go".

    I appreciate and liked your video but disagree with a lot of your views.
    LOTF hated? I think many people thought it was a bad Souls game, not necessarily a terrible game in itself.
    The PAX fights (and Cerberous) you struggled with seem to me to be typical boss fights, in that you're required to find its weakness - isn't that often the whole point of a boss fight. I'll admit I don't spend much time dying to bosses before looking up the solution online, but once you know how the fights go PAX was fantastic both times.
    Likewise the later blue blobby things, incredibly difficult on first encounter, but with practice and knowing how to kill them, even these become managable.
    Just like Souls, The Surge's combat gets better with practice, and with the right build, fights, originally incredibly hard, can become trivial.
    I agree with your conclusion and am also excited to see what Deck 13 come up with next. The Surge is a huge improvement on LOTF so here's to something even better. Can't seem to get enough of that SoulsBourne addictive magic.

That's right, it's the same and thus complaining about its second hit is pointless. Salt is truly a good word for it. A good Dark Souls game does not let you spam the R1. Its an unreasonable guess as the only reason the first boss died to it was because it was heavily damaged to begin with. 14:33 Is complete denial as he literally just explained that PAX *does* fall over if you damage the legs enough and do something reasonable such as hitting the boss's leg as it stomps. 15:30 is a perfect sum-up of how little he bothers to anything other than buttonmash. It regenerates so naturally the only way to kill it is to destroy its core. This can only be done while spamming the R1 like a maniac so it makes "no sense". 15:45 Because you were spamming the R1. I started playing this game because of PSN+ and because it looks pretty dank cool. (I'm sorry I shouldn't complain because I got the game for free but I need vent out) For me the overall mechanic of hit and dodge would be great if they actually fix the hitboxes of some of the enemies (especially the non human ones). Sometimes the you are able to dodge sometimes the enemies tracks you like crazy even when you're in the middle of dodging.
    I've seen some reviews talking about how great the boss fight feel, glad we're on the same page. To me the boss have frustrating hitboxes and damage because "dark souls is HARD" without realizing you need to be fair too. I feel angry when I beat the boss than happiness. I was also lucky fighting PAX, winning without realizing why. Firebug was the most decent boss design compared to the rest. Big Sister is the most annoying boss due to the camera being possessed by it (though there are ppl said big sister was the easiest). Dark Cerberus boss you actually need to zoom in and enhance at the console in the level to know how to beat him (bad design) and the last boss was probably the less problematic to beat I'll be honest.
    Anyway, I had more fun fighting with the human enemy because it gives the one on one and sometimes 2 on one duel mechanic. Slowly fighting my way to the top which I quite like. Personally I like one handed, twin rigged and staves (because of the reach) because I can actually use my combos on the enemies. I didn't like single rigged and heavy duty because it take 1000000 years to perform a hit but I discovered why some ppl like these weapons was because of dash hitting. Meaning you won't be using the combos that the animators work hard on.
    I saw Surge 2's trailer and hope they fix all these problems. The boss in the trailer seems 10 times more fun to beat now. I really hope it's good! Can't wait.

    This video speaks my mind. I've just beaten the Black Cerberus only after looking up guides realizing I just need to hit the PAX's legs a few more times after the yellow bar is full. Before looking up guides, I was running into it and dodging around the room to bait the PAC into hitting itself or hitting something that'll damage it. It never occured to me that I should just keep on hitting its legs because the first boss fight taught me to make it hit itself once the bar is full. Black Cerberus himself was easy. It was knowing the exact way to beat the PAX that was a pain in the ass. They could easily make it obvious by having a healthbar for the legs.
    And the combo mechanics! Fucking pisses me off that it does a 3 attack animation when I only press attack twice and can't cancel out of it. I started the game with a single rigged weapon and that 3 combo animation was the main reason I died. Ended up switching to the staff when I'm fighting the 2nd boss, and though it also has that shitty 3 animation combo, it was fast enough that I can dodge away if need be.
    I like that it has combos, but let me decide how many attacks I want to do in my combo. I don't understand why they implement this un-intuitive combo animation mechanics.

    I know I'm 3 years late, but I gotta say, the bosses, except for the third (because stationary horror close to the bed of chaos) and last boss (because I didn't get to the boss arena yet) all the bosses came pretty easy and self explainatory. At least to me. I could kill the first 2 bosses within 2 tries, but I see how some people have trouble with them. It just felt natural to me to let him attack himself with his own stupid rockets. :D
    Edit: Also, if you kill the first boss by making him fall over from attacking the leg he is standing on when trampling on the ground, you can get the P.A.X. Imperator V2.0 . It's not just Mk.II - it has an elemental attack stat opposed to it normal Counterpart you get for defeating the boss while using his rockets against him...

    I'm facing all of those difficulties since day 1 I picked up this game. I'm asking myself, am I not a good player or the game is the culprit. I realise that, game is meant to be enjoyed. If you are frustrated in the process, take a break and come back later. You may even do better. That's why I decided, no game is broken but we simply have to adapt to the game mechanic. This game is my first soul game btw, you can imagine how it infuriates me in the first hour. 🙈

    One thing you did not do is the ability to dodge and jump to avoid the attacks. What some do not understand is that in this game, you have to make a lot of observations, especially when an enemy does a mid or low swing attack which you can dodge when you are close to the enemy; if you observe carefully, all enemies have these attacks but watch out for the vertical attacks as there is no way to avoiding them at close range. The two bosses you displayed on this video weren't that bad. I'm surprised you did not complained about the "Big Sister" boss; I think that was one of the lowest points of the game but it was alright for me.

  • @tavastian3288

    I havent noticed any problems with combos? Ive tries all weapons and 1 press results in 1 attack, not 2. also different weapons have different frames thats all there is to it. Staggering enemies is really easy when you hit their weak points, armored or not. Only HEAVY type enemies can break free from long combos, where light and medium types stagger from 1-3 hits. Also vs. machines you need elemental type damage. its just a game of rock, paper, scissors, with 4 different damage types and multiple different hit locations on enemies. Trying to stagger a HEAVY armor enemy by stabbing them in the chest, is not gonna work too well. hit them in the legs or head. Also it depends alot if you are using vertical or horizontal attacks on what body part

    • @hairylegsxd
      @hairylegsxd 4 года назад

      for example single rigged weapons do 2 hits with one button press in the second string of a combo [ ex: horizontal1 - horizontal2 - horizontal3 ] horizontal2 will throw an elbow followed by an attack with the weapon. super clunky, super slow, can't be cancelled out of. Lots of weapons do this, the quick ones don't matter as much, but heavy duty and single rigged weapons feels clunky because of this.

      That scorpion dog was so counter-intuitive. You actually have to get up close to it, block its attack and counter. Let your stamina refill, block and counter, maintaing a close distance to it so it doesn't do the lunge attack. Rinse and repeat. I got effed up a lot by it till I realised staying close to it is the way to fight it.

  • @49752
    @49752 Год назад

    Yeah you definitely were complaining too much, believe it or not it is possible to cancel your attacks even during the combos. I found this out by watching the gameplay trailer before playing the surge. It also briefly mentions so during those loading screen facts. During the "wind up phase" of either attack you can cancel by block/guard incoming attacks and timing it just right will also counter them. Its all in the animation, just look closly to what your doing with each weapon of choice. Unfortunately you can't cancel mid swing but definitely can cancel before or after attcks. It is fair to say the surge can relaye to the Dark Souls series but The Surge is its own gameplay no doubt. I highly recommend retrying the game one last time and watch the gameplau trailer as well.

      I loved the Black Cerberus fight. It was the first boss you really had to grind for. First couple attempts I got my ass handed to me. then I buckled down and grinded for an hour or two racked up some tech scraps upgraded my gear as much as I could and upgraded my core. I equipped a few health boosters and some energy boosters (as well as the one that gives you more energy per hit) and some health injectors and the one that uses energy as health. Then I went back and got my ass handed to me. So I kept trying and learned his combos/when to attack and when to wait etc etc also not to mention I had no problems with P.A.X again. idk I just knew that you could trip him during that stomp attack. I mean it only has 1 leg on the ground and that front armor had to fall off for a reason right? Honestly I thought it was obvious. that's how I beat it the first time and I got the 2.0 weapon first. I didn't even know you could make it use its own missiles against it til i saw it on a guide I was using for the platinum. I seriously don't know how you didn't figure it out not gonna lie. the multiple P.A.X's didn't bother me either. It took me about 3-4 kills on P.A.X to beat him. I didn't even know you could stop him from summoning them until NG+. Maybe I was over leveled or something idk but they went down in less than a minute for me. Was your gear upgraded? Honestly I gotta give a dislike cus for the entire second half of the video it just sounds like angry salty commentary and not an actual in depth analysis. Sorry man but I really don't see it. Last thing is the overcharge interface literally pops up directly in front of the enemy after you get its health low so i actually find it funny you didn't figure that out lol Honestly the Surge is a good game. You seriously just sound salty. There's a reason a second one was made. Cus it was a pretty decent game. As a Dark Souls veteran I love it.

      @@TripleCatAttack Yeah, he mentions needing to plan your attacks and the 2 hits per press being problematic... if it is always 2 hits, how is that not something you plan for? The game doesn't choose random attacks, it isn't like sometimes it only swings once and other times it swings twice, so why is it a problem when the game gives you two quick attacks on a slow weapon instead of one really slow one? Count that double-strike as one attack, easy!

  • @Gmesboo

    Having completed the game 3 times by now, I have to admit, I've never encountered the issue you are describing with weapon attacks.
    I've only ever started one attack for every button press, though I've also played it on PC, not on PS4.
    I can imagine this making the game a lot more frustrating.
    Overall I very much enjoyed the game, though the final area with these engery blobs was really anyoing, especially when the button prompt to kill them bugged out and simply never appeared.
    In addition to the limb cutting system, I loved the customization options the game gave you with the implants, for example, I got rid of the HP bar for enemies early on and never turning it back on.

      So 3 button presses for 5 hits?

    • @ingeniousclown

      Correct.
      1st press: Wide horizontal swing
      2nd press: Elbow hit + Wide swing
      3rd press: Wide swing + stab
      That should be 5 presses, not three. I tried to explain it the best I could through speech, and even put it in video with the numbers ticking up with button presses.

    • @Gmesboo
      @Gmesboo 7 лет назад

      Just reinstalled to test it and I stand correct, it's actually as bad as you described with single rigged weapons.
      I still wouldn't agree that this is as widespread a problem as you make it sound, single rigged is the only one that adds an extra hit for the second button press and some heavy duty combos do it for the third button press.
      I fully agree that single rigged is broken though, guess that's the reason I never really used it.

    • @ingeniousclown
      @ingeniousclown  7 лет назад +1

      Coming from a third party viewer, it's reasonable to make those guesses. But for guesses like that to work, they need to be reinforced with subtle lessons earlier in the game. The Black Cerberus is the 2nd to last boss fight, and nowhere in the game is the mechanic of tricking an enemy to break something important ever taught. The boss doesn't even react to their destruction. So it's a bit of a leap to make by this point in the game.
      The first boss though, that's a little more reasonable to expect. Again, it's never taught anywhere before the boss that attack enemies at a certain time will stun them. I, and probably many other players, never wanted to even be near the legs while he stomps anyway, considering the game's slow weapon attack speeds that have trouble timing strikes for a leg up combined with the too-large hitbox of the stomp attack that allows it to fall.
      It's interesting to see though how these things are more apparent to someone who hasn't actually played the game and is able to take in the whole scene, rather than just focus forward on the boss.

    I totally agree! I am a souls vet and this feels like a cheap souls clone with much worse mechanics. I am currently in the second level and it's a mess. No control of your combos or canceling... Enemies can kill you pretty easily but your damage does not scale as well, rolls (dodge) start pretty late so you cannot really react, block is a mess and you never know which attacks are blockable until they hit you. And how do you stagger them consistently? It feels like some random poise system. Anyway, this is too unrefined and I will move to Sekiro. Hope they can make a better game.

Too many things are griping me about the game play that is more a chore to get anywhere than a feeling of accomplishment like the souls games did... When you have to contemplate about deleting the game or carry on till you are sick of it says something about the game.... BTW.. I finished all 3 Dark Souls and Elden Ring so I do have some experience with these kind of games... Where Dark Souls are difficult but rewarding, This one is just trying to beat DS by upping the Difficulty to a 100 and claim to be a better game... sorry but that recipe is not working for me.

    The worst part of this game is the level design. It's not intuitive at all, everything looks similar, and shortcuts feel totally random. I got to the third area and ended progressing pretty far without seeing a single obvious shortcut. Like, seriously, don't fucking hide short cuts. I passed by an elevator in the second zone like five times because I was sure it would lead to progress, and then it ended up being a shortcut that I could have used.
    It means a lot, and I mean a lot, that I couldn't point you to a goddamn thing in The Surge's maps, but I could guide you to just about every major item in Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3, even though I haven't played those in years and I just finished playing The Surge. Your setting is a business. Make the building FEEL like a factory. They're not random hodgepodges of nonsense corridors and maintenance shafts. They're very clear cut with a lot of signs around to direct you to places. The levels should have been a lot more open with more of an emphasis on exploring everywhere rather than making finding your way around a chore. Seriously, Metroid had better map design. On the NES.
    Combat was good, but very, very bland. I went with the medium everything weapon and by the 3rd area the only thing that posed a threat were those annoying three legged jumpy guys. Literally everything else was mashing R1 because I staggered even heavy armor dudes in 3 hits, long before they could wind up and hit me. Bosses a chore but only because they didn't stagger. Oooo, that's so hard, enemies that don't play by the rules! Truly peak difficulty is cheating. Yami Yugi was the toughest boss because he'd just make up a new rule that only applies to him.
    I didn't like the progression. None of the chips I put into my rig felt meaningful outside of extra heals and health ups. And buying myself two extra hits wasn't exactly game changing either. There's ... nothing wrong with normal leveling people. Leveling up weapons and armor was okay, I liked you could do it right away, and I didn't mind the power core thing. The best part there was being able to change your build at any given time. Too bad I destroyed a bunch of chips at the start because I thought they were duplicates and didn't know you could stack their effects because there's no fucking tutorial on fine mechanics like that.
    The Surge is pretty good. A lot of people are really missing the "that I enjoyed" part of your video, but the problem is that The Surge exists in a time where there are many games that are frankly better. It's got a special kind of jank to it that makes it enjoyable for some people, but for most people it's just an unpolished mess that could have used more time in the oven.
    And before some 12 year old comes in screaming "GIT GUD!" I beat the second boss first try without a health booster on, I had a damage up, energy to health, scrap up, and some increase energy gain on hits on. The bosses are fucking easy in this game, they're just not fun. They look boring, half the game's mechanics don't apply or matter (like you can't do sick executions on them), and at the end of the day they're basically just sponges you dance around. The game is FAR from hard. It's just really fucking boring and lazy.

      How the fuck are you supposed to know that those rockets have to hit the boss? In 99% of the games out there such mechanics have to be avoided. So it is not very intuitive. Hence you die a lot till you find out, by chance, that it is what you have to do. Once you learn the patters here the bosses become easier but you have to figure it out without any clues.

It's also not the only way to knock it down - you can hit the leg it balances on when it stomps and that is how you get the "hardcore" kill. It's only unintuitive if you don't look at the environment and have only ever played games where boss mechanics were nothing more than, "just smash anywhere until the boss dies."

    • @CrniWuk
      @CrniWuk 3 года назад

      @@Dreznin It's a stupid gameplay with punitive mechanics. That's at least my opinion. You can feel to disagree of course as I am not saying that my point is the absolute. I almost beat the game though till I lost interest. The point is once I actually knew the patterns of enemies the game became piss easy. And that's what frustrated me. The combat wasn't "funn" in that regard. It was just rinse-and-repeat. Dieing over and over again. The fact that you also often find your self in a situation where you have nothing but a small corridor and an enemy that "leaps" at you with an attack you can't avoid adds insult to that as well. In my opinion simply bad game design. Otherwise an actually very good game particularly from the aesthetics.

    I love the game , the problem is that the game doesnt tell you how to kill the bosses and can frustrating but pas that I think that the combat is fantastic, I ended up approaching many enemies according to how I learn their machanics. I thank the game is awesome.
