For the record Harry Potter is amazing I would happily read it a million times don’t feel bad that it’s a new experience more then once one almost jealous.
Did anyone else notice he said, “I’m not allowed to try again.” This is something I often struggle with. As someone who is completely blind, on the autism spectrum and has complex PTSD, this is something I say a lot. I think a lot of it comes from the trauma. Not having people who had good patience and unconditional love when it came to dealing with someone who is both totally blind and autistic. Not being allowed to make mistakes, not being allowed to do things that helped my blindness and stuff.
Give the book printed out, 1 chapter at a time. Do not give him that thick book all at once. REWARD EACH SMALL SUCCESS to encourage his earnest attempts at completion of the thick book. It is like trying to eat a giant cake at a piece at a time but the sight of the whole cake causes great anxiety.
Also, hug him when he's frustrated from trying. That's if he allows you to. When my autistic grandson gets frustrated, he bumps his head into me and I hug his head. Doesn't always work but when it does, we both feel better.
@@winterdream5710 they ignore him and even admit to allowing him to talk to himself stemming in his room for hours.. and they see that as "allowing him freedom to express himself" while most of us can obviously tell they are the reason he is suffering.
@@Blackafternoon nooo, I don't think it's that way at all. Their son is a teen and even though he's autistic, he still has teen ways like ranting and wanting to be left alone for a bit. They know better than I do. My statement was more of what I would do in the situation which could or could not work. Dealing with teens is hard; an autistic teen can be more of a challenge. Overall, I think they're good parents trying their best.
Often, I feel I can relate to those on the spectrum. Depending on the severity - they can be so stressed out and from what I gather from some statements Ian made (which is my nephews name), he knows he's stressed and overwhelmed but nothing he's doing is calming him and doesn't know why. I struggle with severe depression, self deletion thoughts and some paranoia and when it flares, I feel the same way. Nothing I do helps, no talking to somebody helps. That in itself compounds the stress and agitation because we don't know why it's happening and why nothing is helping. At 45 as of today, I sometimes think these experiences, as frustrating and difficult as they are, have helped make me stronger in a sense. I recently watched the video of him on his most recent birthday. He's grown so much. I hope his own experiences with this has helped and will even more in the future, be stronger. You definitely have some great kids.
I was born with autism in 2021 and i feel how he feel, when it came to reading. It also took me a long time reading one chapter. I do stim, I manipulate my fingers alot. And i feel him. I hope he gets better. Hope you are okay Kiddo!
It might help them to order him on or cam reader. It takes a picture of the board it says the page says, and it really helps me be able to read and understand the book and enjoy reading. I’m 60 40 brother.
His parents arent ignoring him or being disrespectful. They understand hes upset and having a meltdown obviously. They know he can calm down on his own from this one so they are chosing to let him do that. He isn't having a severe meltdown or hurting anyone so they see no reason to intervene or possibly make him more upset. They're doing very good and keeping Alister occupied and away from Ian so he won't stress out more. Please try not to assume things unless you are educated, know from experience or are also on the spectrum like me.
I'm autistic, and I've also gotten upset about similar things to bad reading comprehension (though not specificly that). When I was younger I didn't feel like an actual person because of how rare it was for me to relate to anyone. Ian's opinion on being autistic is the exact same as mine. I was diagnosed with CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth disease) about a year ago, and a doctor theorized that my autistic traits are all symptoms of it. I'm wondering if Ian might have a similar condition that can be treated, because what I heard in your videos make me think he might.
I've had trouble with reading too, still kind of do. But I found audio helps me. For some reason, Audiobooks register a lot better for me than just reading pages of nothing but words. I've gotten better as the years have gone on, reading short stories and excerpts. But all novels I've completed so far had been in audiobook form.
Allister doesn't understand he is disrupting the video. It isn't a call for attention he's just unaware. I was the same way, it's a lack of social awareness and understanding social cues.
So why are they making him read it?Why not watch it with him. Stop it after each event and help him take notes. Take notes when there is foreshadowing. It’s called accommodations. Think of a language that is difficult for u. Get a thick book in it. Read it. I am supervised his teacher gave that assignment.
That's not an antisocial trait, per se, but a symptom of many mental health complications. Best thing you could do to get more clarity is to see a therapist.

I hated reading……same thing, I knew how to read at a young age, but I couldn’t comprehend long books, especially if I didn’t even like the concept of the book in the first place…..and in my senior year I had to move to contemporary literature class because I really couldn’t handle the English history classes and read things like Mark Twain
It really saddens me that you filmed your child at one of his worst moments and uploaded it to the internet for the world to see. He deserves better than this. I have two children with autism and although I'm not a perfect parent, I could never do something this bad to my child. It is your job to keep his dignity to the best of your ability. This is not doing that. I just came upon this video... The first video I've seen from your channel and I'm already turned away. Im not saying you're bad people or bad parents but maybe shut the camera off when your children are suffering and not at their greatest moments.
I agree, but I think they are better than the parents who would have been authoritarian and went to beat his ass because his anger offended them. For some weird parents they can’t handle the hit to their ego that a 7 year old inflicts by forgetting to turn socks right side out.
My twin sister has ADHD and she is very upset about doing her mistake on her art project today 1/15/24 she had a melt down and she got yelled at by our mom she use this soft blanket to calm her self down like Ian. She sometimes cries in her blanket I was trying to calm her down then she started to scream again like Ian she was on her medication so sometimes that made her scream and yell when she is really upset like Ian have a good day when she tries to read she can’t tell my mom what the chapters what is it about she love chocolate cookies if she can't tell use what the chapters is about she does not get the cookies she gets upset and she keeps saying I can't try again and then when she calms down she tries to read again

Imagine filming your child while they are so distressed and panicked. This is so exploitative its awful. You state he "gave his consent" ; children will always want to please their parents and he undoubtedly felt pressured into allowing this to be posted. Furthermore, as a child, he doesn't yet understand the implications of it. Rather than comfort him, you whip out your phone to film him in the middle of a time when he needs support and calm and comfort? As parents it is our responsibility to do the right thing by our children. They can not consent as they are children. This is so distressing to watch.
Get him to look at some chapter books that might interest him. I thought they were a total waste of time and a huge bore, until I found Warrior Cats. I'm a 20 year old with a diagnosis on Autism - and am low-functioning. Look at the premises/summarized plots of a few different chapter books with him and see what he likes. Did he choose Harry Potter himself? If he finds a book he likes, he may fixate on it and put alot more time into it than you could ever imagine.. It's how I read through a whole volume of Warriors, and am currently going through the first book of the second volume! I've even surprised myself - A WHOLE VOLUME! That's alot of damn words. I bet your son can do it too, he just has to find a book he can click with. I believe in him!
