Oh Shirley, Shirley, Shirley. No one does emotion in a song quite like you. Unsurpassed. Thank you for your music down through the years.
I think Shirley Bassey probably occupies a unique place in the history of British music. She wasn't a pop star, she didn't do musical theatre, she didn't act. Really she belongs to the pre-rock and roll era of crooners and big band singers, music hall and variety shows, that was rapidly dying out even as she was achieving her greatest success. Outside of the pop stars of the day, there probably was no more famous female singer in the UK from the 1960's throughout the 1970's, certainly no-one in her particular style. Even in 2007 she was sufficiently well-known to entertain a crowd on the main stage of the UK's biggest festival at Glastonbury. But it's actually quite rare thing for UK fame and success to translate to America, and many great talents have foundered in mid-Atlantic.
Shirley Bassey came to life for me when she sang Gold finger from the 007 movie. Never heard of her before, but she blew me away. Loved her since.

She came on to our TV screens as top of the Bill on a British Variety Show in London - I want to say in the 1950's. She was still very young. She was introduced as the 'Girl from Tiger Bay''. My mum was a great fan and, after her performance that night so was I. Growing up she has always been there, she had several series of he own shows, often appeared on others shows. She has literally travelled the world many times, giving impeccable 'live' performances, sold more millions of records than I can count, has been honoured by the late Queen, had her image on our currency and is much loved. She sang Diamonds are Forever maybe last year(?) for the BAFTA Award show in London. She was still great. She was asked to sing the theme songs for three of the James Bond films. SUGGESTION: Would you be kind enough to put 'TONIGHT I GAVE THE GREATEST PERFORMANCE OF MY LIFE' (4K REMASTERED version) on your list. All the best from the UK

To answer your question at 8:50 for me, I first heard of Shirley Bassey from her performance of the title song to the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" which I saw as a kid at a Drive-in theater a couple of summers after its first run in movie theaters.
Then I would see her on some TV variety shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tom Jones Show, and hear her on the easy listening radio station that my grandparents listened to in the late '60s through the '70s. By the way, another singer with a somewhat similar style and vocal timbre as Shirley Bassey that I heard in the same ways at that time was Vikki Carr - you should check her out since despite having won 3 Grammy awards, she is not very well known these days, but deserves to be recognized as a great vocalist. I didn't hear much from her in the '80s through the mid-90s, but in the late '90s I got satellite TV which had some British channels and other international channels on which I would once in a while catch some of her performances, and that prompted me to buy a couple of her albums on CDs. I heard more of her music when I got XM radio in about 2003.
Of course, now I can stream her performances anytime I want, which I do.
This lady has one amazing voice and brilliantly acts through the lyrics. Superb singer.
An iconic dramatic song of hers is "This is My Life". For fun, see her version (also iconic) of "Hey, Big Spender". And for sheer class and elegance, don't miss "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from "The Morecambe and Wise Show". That should keep you going for a bit - but there are many, many, MANY more... Oh, you're in for it now!
Shirley was on the TV a lot when I was growing up in the 1970s. She was often on variety and sketch shows and had a show of her own. You should watch her on the Morecambe and Wise show where they do a comedy skit with her.
Yes, and with Les Dawson, another UK comedian. He made great fun of her, but she took it on the chin and I thought her charming.

Dame Shirley at Glastonbury 2007 and The Electric Proms 2009, also live at The Royal Albert Hall about two years ago for The BAFTAS it's film and TV awards so would have been 85 it's only a few minutes, no introduction as normal just wanders on stage and I think from the same place again for James Bond Anniversary possibly last year, this year burst into song with Boy George at Attitude Awards London 87 by now.
