Meet Joe Hale. Joe was a student in The Concrete Underground and said he learned a lot from all the training videos. He wanted to get some hands-on training so he asked me if he could work with us for a few weeks.
I agreed, and this is one of the concrete slab pours we did while he was training with us. Watch as we teach him how to kick-screed the concrete. There's really nothing that replaces in-person, hands-on concrete training. But The Concrete Underground with all my training videos is about as close as you can get without being there in person.
Joe was a great student. He listened and watched as we taught him the techniques for pouring and finishing concrete.
Tell me in the comments how you think Joe did for his first time learning how to screed concrete.

Came out nice! Client is super happy and we got the frame up yesterday. You guys were great to work with.
Awesome! Thank you!
Good job Joe youre a humble guy, strong and patient....great job Mike
Thanks for watching
Mike, Thanks for helping a Veteran start his new life after the military.
I am doing a tiny slab and came across your channel. You explain everything thoroughly and do amazing work. You’re doing a great job even teaching this guy. You’re a great teacher.
Mike, nice of you to do that !!
Very Cool what you are doing for that young fellow there Mike! Hats Off......HUGE Thumbs UP!!👍
Concrete Underground is a great place to start. But nothing replaces hands on training. In my 43 years, the best training and team I have ever worked with!
Good stuff
Great video!
I really enjoy your video, it’s so soothing to watch you guys work in unison:-)
Excellent work
Many thanks
Nice to see a new start ,,, great video as usual.
Way to give back. And nice to have an extra hand come summer.
Good job
Man I wish I could come work a day with you guys I would love it 👍🏼
Hey Mike, would love to learn how to do exposed aggregate the right way. If you end up doing one would love to see a video.
Its weird i just brought my guy Mike in from ny, its weird how we all have th same ideas 😂😂😂
Nice to see you again Mike
Totally cool pour!
This is very educational -thank you. Can you tell me how much does the concrete cost per yard in this location? Thank you.
A friend of mine who does flatwork does not use wire mesh, only fiber in the concrete. The wire mesh for the most part is useless because it ends up on the bottom anyway. On the haunches he adds fiberglass rebar after the concrete is poured and just pushes them down a couple inches with the rake.
It's doesn't end up on the bottom if you make it a point not to let it. There's hooks on the come along. Now I'm not a finisher by no means. But I've done enough and enough concrete demo to say without question that shit makes a tremendous difference if it's put down right
You are supposed to use chairs to keep it off the ground
Takes repeatedly doing that same thing to get better at it. But positive reinforcement helps whomever is do I ng the job.
19 yards of concrete how thick was it..?
Love the channel but if you are teaching others then should really cover all aspects of the pour. There are U.S. standards for placing mesh in concrete, primarily covered under the American Concrete Institute Leaving mesh on the ground or pulling it up with hooks is not best practice, as stated by ACI 318 and ACI 301, because it leads to inconsistent placement and inadequate cover, compromising the slab's structural integrity. Mesh should be in the upper half of the slab, about 1.5 to 2 inches from the top, to control shrinkage and temperature cracks, provide tensile reinforcement where tensile stresses occur, and enhance durability by protecting against environmental exposure. The recommended best practice is to use proper supports such as chairs or bolsters to ensure the mesh stays correctly positioned throughout concrete placement.
Question: Hey Mike nice videos. I have a large driveway and it has a couple low spots. Can I drill a hole in the low spots to get them to drain? How big a hole?
strong concrete
What part of Ohio would he start his business?
Dayton area
My dewalt float is still not broke in and I’ve had it over a month 😢
Have you done any real scrubbing with it yet?
Your mud is way to thin.....like the mud they use in California and pump thru pumper machines and hoses......you need to stiffen up your mix a bit.
Definitely not as easy as you guys always make is seem.
Nobody in your crew pulls the wire up!
Sometimes youre just too old or set in ways to learn....
