Anyone else think Cody should film Brian customizing Cody's axe? i love the work Cody does, but it would also be cool to hear Brian's philosophy on axe customization and watch him work.

I did the same thing to mine except for the handle, I will have to profile it similarly. Also been thinking about relieving a little of the underside of the blade to lighten things up. When I ordered the axe I ordered 4, kept the best one and returned the the rest. To say QC is poor is being really kind. One had a handle with so much runout, checking and roughness that it looked like weathered oak firewood. Another had a turned bit that was about a 1/4 inch off center.
After seeing this, I gone out and bought a $10 axe, I made sure to buy the best built unit of that model, after that I went home and touched it like Brian pointed, made it from a dull, meh axe into a $50 axe, I noticed that it holds an edge very good. The steed is the most important aspect of the axe, you can always rehandle it. Now it is a pleasure every time I use it, I take care of it, oil the handle, sharpen it, I love it.
Rasps are very underrated tools, especially hand made rasps. The slightly irregular hand cut teeth make a nice coherent surface while machine cut teeth are too regular and can groove your workpiece.

Remove the head from the handle. Set the handle aside. 2. Get a new handle with proper grain orientation. 3. Before hanging the axe head on the new handle, get a new axe head made of quality steel. 4. Hang new axe head on new handle."
I recently bought a cheapo $15 handle for an old gransfors that I restored. it was a nice piece of wood but I've seen a better finish on toothpicks, so I sanded the varnish off, rounded the pommel and took it down to 500grit then I gave it some boiled linseed and fit it to my axe head for a stunning finish that would have cost me over $100 otherwise. It pays to put a little love into your tools.
I spent 10+ hours hand sanding then polishing using the same grit progression that astronomers use to polish/make a telescope mirror. I'm more than happy with the result.
I just got the husqvarna forest axe the head is nicely hung grain orientation is excellent just had to sand the varnish off and oil the handle(learned that here) and a little work on the edge I am quite pleased with it. Thank you Cody for bringing this affordable axe to our attention.
I got my Carpenters axe, today. I was not impressed with the handle, and the sheath. I put a sheath that I made on it and refinished the handle. It was sharp right out of the box but I sharpened the Husqvarna with my oil stones for about 15 minutes and put a mirror shine on the axe. I stayed with the convex grind instead if using a shallower angle edge. I sanded the handle with my orbital sander and then hand sanded it before soaking it good with linseed oil. I will put a leather handle protector on the handle after I get a few more coats of linseed oil on it. I am very pleased with it and I really do not see a reason to do a whole lot more to it. If it ain’t broke, I do not fix it. I very seldom use an axe for carpentry stuff. I have pleanty of power tools and a good BFH. I bought it as a less expensive substitute for a grans fors Small Forest Axe, pure and simple

The Husqvarna hatchet will be coming in the mail on Tuesday. This will be my first hatchet, and I'll be using it mainly for firewood, but learning a few bushcraft techniques and projects in the future. I've never owned a hatchet before. What are some ways I could improve it? Whether the handle or the grind of the axe head itself, how can I improve it from the factory to better perform the tasks?

Finally a axe video which was honest! (All though you did use the phrase "should have been done at the factory") A fairly well made, with good steel axe for under $60 is a steal! So the handle is to thick, well I can make a big handle smaller easier than make a small handle bigger! You said it correctly that a few hours work and you have a axe better than a three times the price axe. And you made it fit you the way you want it instead of the way the factory decided it should fit you. Good job guys!!!!!

I have this axe myself and “pimped” mine similarly. Have you considered adding a few inches when rehanging with the weight and shape of this axe as I have? I feel like it would make a fantastic small ax with real two handed capabilities.
I've got big hands and my fingers never come close to touching my palm. I've completed the bit but the handle is terrible. For now. I planned on shaving it down tonight. I did my Forrest axe and its amazing.
I just got one of those. I think I will do a similar mod but instead of a rasp I think I'll use my Dremel knock off (Craftsman) for the octagonal shape.
Cody I have noticed that when you result to using titles that loosely explain the video or a part of the video, everyone complains about clickbait. When I see on larger channels that are 100% pure clickbait the comments are mostly "Awe (name) I want to thank you for never clickbaiting."

I have had that same axe for a few years now and love it. I also had to dress mine up a bit but that's what I was expecting after reading reviews.

Just fire up the forge and make your own. That way you could make all the adjustments to make it right the first time.
You forgot to include mining the ore, smelting, and adding the proper allowing elements.

I've also heard the two finger rule. The width of a comfortable handle should be the width of your pointer and middle finger plus a quarter inch.
