The pleading in Ben's voice when he begs, "Cristine! FLAVOR TOWN!" 😂🤣😂 HILARIOUS!!! Thanks for the giggles, you two 😂🤣🤣
Just keep saying it and she'll get it!
18:19 hearing Cris call Ben “buddy boy” is just what I needed to hear this morning 🤣
Yupp it made me choke on my coffee! It sounds cute too lol 😂😂
Cream from a cow is naturally yellow from the beta caratine level in it, that's why butter and cheese are a yellow hue and can be darker or lighter depending on the cow breed and their diet.
Red velvet cake is known for being red for the type of Swedish chocolate that is used.
Thank you for coming to my TED cliff notes
What swedish chocolate is that? I’ve never seen any red chocolate in our grocery stores.
@Lovisa Martinelle thank you, I messed up, it's a chemical reaction between coco, just regular coco, and the acidity of buttermilk in the cake.
@@classichomesteading That does sound a bit more logical. I thought I’d missed a red chocolate all of my life!
Also to add, banana pancakes are popular in Hawaii!!
@@lovisamartinelle5768 ruby chocolate is naturally redish pink and omfg so so good
Ben keeps saying "when we end the podcast" & it's making me so sad 😭. I know it can be a positive thing cuz they'll have time to focus on other projects they enjoy but I'm gonna miss this, it really makes my day each week.
Me too! They make every topic interesting !
Wait, they're ending the podcast???
I make butter every American Thanksgiving as a super unnecessary family joke. You mix cream far passed the point of whipped cream, when the cream separates into butter and buttermilk. You use a cheese cloth to squeeze out all the buttermilk and then you have butter. It totally naturally has a slight yellow tint when I make it. 🤣
What a hilarious joke.
Churn thy butter
Sounds like this would be a good bakelogical.
And also cheese is dyed orange because good cheese with higher fat content has a natural yellowish tinge and some farms decided to dye their cream/milk in order to fake a higher quality appearance than is physically possible. It can be done with natural/plant based dyes but the cheaper cheeses now use cheaper dyes. The orange/red used to be annatto, and from fancy farms they still use that.
I just made butter 🧈 last night. But i just shook some heavy cream in a mason jar for like 10-15 minutes. I considered it my work out for the day. 💦
I love your podcast ♥️ I think a pretty fun idea would be to choose a "banned word" every episode and try to trick the other person into saying the word inadvertently. Like a little fun competition while you talk about different topics. Love you both ♥️
Please like this comment if you want them to see it and maybe try it ♥️
That’s such a fun idea, i’m liking this so cristine can see!!!
I remember the jnj podcast lol. Julien's Gruel still gets me to this day lol
Me too 🤣 “RICE IT HAS TO BE RICE” “ITS GRUEL”
same hahahahahaa
Man ginger cookie
SAME. I can hear Jenna saying, “stop it” before dissolving into cry laughter
I miss her so much but I’m glad they’re happy 😌
I make my own butter :) the color of the butter comes from the fat having been separated from the buttermilk. So as you keep whipping/churning the cream, it separates the fats from the liquid. Then you're left with globs of butter in a liquid, called Buttermilk! Then you strain out the blobs and form it by hand, in ice cold water, into a ball or log. It's great! Tastes delicious. It's surprisingly easy. You can get fancy butter churns but I just use my blender or a hand mixer haha.
So essentially the yellow color is the color of the fat which is present in the whipping cream, but because whipping cream and milk in general is mostly water, by making butter your separating the water out and so the yellow of the fats become more visible
Also the more grass that the cow eats the more yellow the butter will be because of the beta-carotene content. And it can also change seasonally, butter made from milk produced in the winter is less likely to have as yellow of a color because the cows are unlikely to be feeding on fresh grass, whereas in the summer they likely have more access to that. That's why you see grass-fed fancy butter is going to be more yellow than non grass-fed.
@@haleyhoudini in the Victorian era, they used marigold to color the butter a deeper yellow during the cold seasons apparently (source: English Heritage youtube channel)
I study food science at Uni and i can confirm this^^ and a food that is dyed to look more appetizing is fish for example, like salmon...usually it comes from fish eating little crabs (same goes for flamingos btw) but in captivity they use dye instead bc it would be too expensive to feed them the crabs
For most of my life I thought it was common knowledge that you make butter by whipping cream for a long time, like that was literally one of the first kitchen-type things I learned as a child ("don't whip the cream too long, it'll turn to butter!"), but recently I've realized that this is in fact not common knowledge 😅
Ben’s monologue before cris says “are you okay” made my fiancé like this podcast 😂😂😂
Ben and Cristine dynamics are basically one of them going on a rant or a tangent about something completely random and the other is just there like "Are you ok?"
This episode is definitely in my top faves, I laughed so much. Their conversations never feel forced or rehearsed, that's why this podcast has been such a treat. Really wish they had gotten to have more guests on like they originally wanted to, maybe Ben would've wanted to continue it longer.
This one was extra special for some reason. Cris was so fun
I think it's common to use red beans for candies in asian culture (like as the filler in a mocchi, for exemple). I really like it, but don't know if you could replicate it with black beans
Red bean has such a distinct flavor… so delicious 🤤 😂 I’ve heard of black bean cake but I’ve never tried it
red bean is so good 🤤🤤 red bean buns definitely one of my favorite foods
Sweet green beans are also delicious.
I have had them in an iced coconut drink.
And there’s red bean ice cream!
black beans as a sweet filler is SUPER good!
I think Cristine is thinking of red bean desserts which are common in Asian countries.
YAYYYY you guys did it!!! Thank you!! Love ya both! I hope you had a lot of fun
When Ben said Thai food was one of his fovorites I got excited because I am Thai. 🤩 However, Pad Thai recipe in this podcast lacked one important ingredient, which is tamarind sauce!
Didn't he say it was the North American version of it?
For the record, saltines are a specific kind of cracker! Stereotypically something you eat when your nauseous/having trouble keeping food down. They’re very boring crackers but also my favorite 😂
Cristine’s insistance on calling scampi “scampellini” is admirable
i havent heard of black bean desserts but ive DEFINITELY heard of red bean desserts !
This podcast fills the Jenna & Julien sized hole in my heart💕
Saltines are indeed a specific type of cracker 🤣 you guys are so funny, I love Taco Tuesdays 🌮
During this podcast I had a pack of saltine crackers next to me and I was eating homemade french fries. So I was laughing but also wanting to know what kind of potatoes the potato cake used. Not because I want to make it but because potatoes are not all the same. I have favorites and sorry russet but you are dead last. Way too starchy and not enough flavor 😅
Originally red velvet was a reddish color due to the use of Dutch cocoa, not beetroot power.
Is Cristine thinking of Vanilla Bean ice cream?
Edit: Make the black bean brownies and try them live.
Probably red bean.
Simply + kitchen = a recipe for disaster 😂
making your own homemade plant milks can be fun, but remember the ones from the store are fortified with vitamins and CALCIUM! i love oat milk, but if i made it at home it would not meet my nutritional needs and probably won't meet yours either, especially if you're replacing regular dairy.
Yesssss!! This is a huge one! We fortify our milk in Canada with vitamin d because it’s impossible to get it from other foods, and so much of our year is dark or too cold to go outside!
They're so funny together, this is honestly my fave podcast these days just for how they make me laugh from being so goofy and weird LOL
The conversation about the butter made me laugh so hard, I almost cried. It was exactly what I needed after a long day of work.😸
17:47 with all that oat milk it would be cool to see a vegan bake on the baking stream. I’ve been vegan for about 5 years and bake a ton and it’s not much different. Plant milk instead of cow and applesauce or a flax egg (ground flaxseed + water) instead of chicken eggs. Loving It Vegan has some of my favorite recipes, especially the double chocolate chip muffins :)
I think Simply decides that she likes something by predicting if separate ingredients that she likes will end up in her stomach at the same time 😂💀
I love how smooth Ben intros the sponsor especially when he catches simply off guard
For the Pad Thai, I instantly thought of Julien. Also, I only had to hear flat noodles and tofu. Instantly thought of J&J making Pad Thai.
Ben, let’s be real. That hummus recipe is not in your head, it’s in your heart.
so funny when cristine said "hey buddy boy" to get ben to listen
simply's hair looks so pretty :)
Cristine: ”Are you ok?”
Ben: “No.”
I feel you, Ben 😂
Also, you should definitely try the bean brownies! I have a feeling that it would taste good, sneaking weird veggies into sponge cakes and pies etc sometimes makes it delicous and you would never tell that the cake has zucchini/beetroot/eggplant in it. It usually helps to moisten the cake and to make it super soft, fluffy and dreamy.
I love zucchini bread though and I've had to convince some people that it's not weird. Now they all actually love it.
Have you seen the weird avocado chocolate desserts? I'm sorry but I draw the line there and I'm enjoying my avocado as avocado. Same as Ben won't touch chocolate hummus; I mean neither will I.
Red bean ice cream is delicious! Up there in my top 3. And Latin American countries also do sweet beans with pinto, but usually not black beans
I can’t stop laughing at the Subway chef
I got this from a blog called The Banana Diaries for oat milk:
Ingredients
1 cup rolled oats, sprouted or regular (make sure they’re GF certified if needed)
6 cups chilled filtered water
1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional: 1 date, 1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
In a large blender, add all ingredients to the base.
Blend on high for only 30-40 seconds. Any longer than that will result in slimy oat milk.
Set the blender aside, and drape a cheesecloth or nut bag over a large bowl.
Pour the oat milk over the cheesecloth to separate the oats from the water. Do not squeeze the water out of the cheesecloth or nut bag, as this will also result in slimy oat milk. Let the water drip, then when it’s basically all out, discard or save the oats for another recipe.
ben’s energy in this podcast (and all his streams, really) is immaculate 😂
The whipping of the cream actually changes the way the molecules are ordered. It's protein based so basically the molecules get more and more clumped together. This changes the chemical structure and eventually this change causes the color to become more yellow than white. This is what I learned in biochemistry once.
I hope this podcast never ends. I look forward to it every week and this is hands down my favorite podcast.
I think Cristine is thinking about red bean ice cream. Red bean is a common thing in like Japanese and other Asian desserts. It’s sweet.
I had some red bean cookies when I went to Korea and they were kinda like this balls of red bean paste coated in pancake batter and fried in this waffle machine looking thing they were AMAZING I tried to make them at home but I didn’t know that those were different beans so I just used regular black beans. They were not as good for sure but surprisingly they were still totally okay! Like you wouldn’t throw them out or anything. I only realized I had a wrong bean because of the cooking time. I had to cook the beans way longer and they were soaked. Anyway that was 10+ years ago and I was 22 😂 so I give myself a pat on the back for making those anyway lol
Hell yeah! I loved when J&J would do these. Lets gooooo!
"From the region of flavour town" I just cant
I've had black bean brownies before and you honestly can't taste it at all, but the texture is softer than regular brownies. Nothing gross, though, you should give it a try!
I’m doing some catching up on the pod while you guys are on break, and thank you so much for making me crack up :) My favorite part as always is ben educating cristine on internet pop culture moments like prince harry’s frostbite incident or “FLAVORTOWN!!”. I love your dynamic. Peace and love 💕
Yay! You guys finally did this! I suggested it ages ago. I'm sure others have, too, but I feel seen. 😂😂😂
Ben, banana pancakes are incredible I highly recommend you try them 😊 I make a bunch and feeeze them.
Get some unpasteurized whole milk, boil it and let it stand in the fridge for some time. you ll see the cream on top. It will have a slight yellow tinge and give a denser butter if you whip it. The water separates out and that is one type of buttermilk. Whipping cream you get is just a purified and stabilized version of that.
“I like everything you do” 🥹 Ben is so sweet 💛
This is one of my favorite episodes ever! I love lighthearted silly games that start hilarious debates. It made my day, and would love a part 2 if you ever need a podcast idea in the future
This was chaos and I’m here for all of it. I laughed the whole podcast 😂
Please don’t end the podcast. This is the only podcast I like 😢
And I was wondering what do I listen to while making pancakes. IT'S POD TIME, BABY!!!!
The mixing the ice cream and blackness together out of numbness just to feel ....*chefs kiss* hilarious and relatable 😂
Ben: "Cristine, it's flavor town!"
Simply: "I'm scared"
🤣🤣🤣
I looooove this 😂 laughing my ass off watching this, love to see you guys having fun together 😁
Actually in Asia there are a lot of desserts with not black but red beans, such as ice cream, or moon cakes, which have red been paste inside.
Some of my favorite pastries have bean paste in them. I tried one they labeled green bean once, and I tried to ask what kind of bean, but the cashier just said green bean. Maybe they meant mung? Surely they didn't mean string beans. Anyway I like the white paste best.
This was so fun!! Cristine's reaction to the butter was hilarious ehhehe
I love you guys! Your voices are so soothing to fall asleep to.
This one was especially fun to watch 😂 love you guys 😄
This was one of my fav episodes. Laughed so much
Cristine dissing slow cooking veggies for hours hurts my culinary HEART
samesies
Y'all gotta try the black bean brownies too! I blend black beans with water and add to brownie mix instead of the other wet ingredients, you don't notice they are beans but they are so fudgy!
Hahahahah the butter part has me cracking up 🤣
About the butter being yellow,
In India, two types of milk are widely used, cow milk & buffalo milk. Cow milk is better quality and is slightly yellow naturally, hence butter made from cow milk is naturally yellow and it gets darker because butter is dense than milk. We also make butter using buffalo milk and that butter is pure white.
Extra information, when you heat and simmer a lot of butter for a long time, it turns into ghee/clarified butter.
I use both standard butter and ghee, and noticed that ghee is more yellow (from the simmer then?)

"You can't make beer in the tub, its full of mail." 🤣
Maple walnut scones are my absolute favorite type of scone. For real, you guys should make them, especially since you have local maple syrup to make them perfect!
I love the totally weird happy energy in this episode! Cristine seems like she’s in a really great mood! 🎉
Black beans brownies are really good! They are mostly for texture, the flavor of the beans is not really that intense, so it makes a good protein source for the treat 💜
I appreciate Ben pronouncing the ingredients in Spanish when it was his turn 😊
I didn’t even knew what hummus was , I tried it because long time ago he mentioned it and then you guys kept mentioning it so I tried it , and now I’m obsessed 😍😋😋
I love the idea of guessing the food based on a recipe novel haha pls do it
I've made the Megan Markle zucchini recipe. it's quite good. takes a lot of time though.
I didn't realize how much I missed Julen's sponsor transitions until Ben started doing them; seamless *chef kiss
I've heard of using black beans in baking as a healthy version. But I loved the milk conversation and Ben pleading cristine to know flavortown
I'd love you to try the black bean brownies. Japanese cuisine has desserts made with sweet red bean paste (example manju) and I absolutely love them!
You should make lemonade scones, because they are a completely different process but turn out similar. Or alternatively cheese scones are lovely!
Its always fun to hear you talk about dairy products haha. I work in a dairy firm and know how the stuff is made.
Butter is always churned, its the Process needed to make butter. The cream gets beaten, the fat clumps togheter and buttermilk is beaten out. (That's how buttermilk is "made", it's just a byproduct) the yellow color is not colored, it's the natural color of the milk fat, so no worries about that haha.
And yes, cheese can be colored sometimes, it's a color out if the color from a carot.
And oat milk is a more complex process than just mixing up some oat flour and water haha. Well it's kind of that, just with way more steps to it
Christine's trio of "oooooh!"s (but especially the last "owa?!") at 48:48 was the cutest thing
“I like everything you do” 🥹 OK SO CUTE
Speaking as a half Dominican - in Dominican culture there's a dessert called habichuelas con dulce which is essentially sweet bean soup 😂 It's usually served with tiny milk cookies. It sounds strange but it actually tastes pretty good!
I'm literally crying😂😂😂😂 this episode is great
I AM SO READY FOR A COFFEE HOLO COLLECTION 🥰❤🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜🤎🖤🩶🤍
There are many bean based desserts in Asian cultures! I grew up on red bean soup (a dessert dish) and tang yuan, a sort of sweet gelatinous ball with various fillings including red beans, etc
I had tiramisu at strongly brewed coffee, it's my favourite dessert ❤️
26:19 😂 “you play this game everyday” 😅😅😅
Sodas and beer are great for meat marinades. They help make the meat tender and give it flavor. My friends mom makes Dr Pepper ribs and they are so good!!
thats the secret to Mexican carne asada, let the alcoholics cook it
Ben, your commentary on black bean ice cream was the crowning jewel of all podcasts ever.
Saltines are a type of cracker. To be honest, I only eat some when I'm sick and my tummy can't handle much 😆
I only knew it was Guy Fieri because I just watched Safiya and Tylers videos from Vegas!
I've made a few black bean brownies recipes. In my experience, they add a sort of savory fudgeyness. I don't think they're better tasting than regular brownies but they're not bad at all if you're trying to be healthier.
Black bean brownies are sooooo good! You should definitely try making them 👍
Cristine: I hate blueberries!
Me: 👀 👁️👁️
🤣🤣
Ben, one would usually put the egg with the burger patty ingredients to bind everything together without drying.
Alcoholic me screaming “Beer!” at Ben during Christine’s recipe 😂
I’ve been pretty occupied with full-time jobs and haven’t kept up with the pod, but now I get afternoons off on taco Tuesdays🥳feels good to be back but also feels like I never left🥹
I think it’s usually either red bean or black sesame for dessert/ice cream flavors!
In Qc we have potato candy (although I haven't seen it in stores in just about forever. It's cooled mashed potatoes with a fuck ton of icing sugar. You make a paste out of it and flatten it out like a pie crust, then spread peanut butter on it, roll it up, and cut it into little pieces. It's so tasty!
the look of concern on cristine’s face😭 11:53
Ben, try the brownis. You won't feel the bean flavour. There is this Jamie Olivr chocolate cake with red beans that is to die for
