You're right Crys! Saxophone solos are very special! Through the 40's & 50's songs were typically played by a "BIG BAND". Trombone, Saxaphone, and Trumpet were dominant. The electric guitar became popular with the birth of Rock in the late 50's & 60's. Very few bands have a saxophone player as a member like Bruce Springsteen does, for example. Now, we have computers that can generate the sound. 😐 I believe that's why it hits so different, like you said. When a band hires a session player (an individual artist who plays the instrument) to come in and lay down the real thing on a track it creates a whole vibe. Songs like "Bakers Street", "Careless Whisper", and "Just The Way You Are" feel so special. ❤️ Great observation, Crys!

It’s been in movies and TV shows over the years. I love guitar 🎸 but sax 🎷 has always been my favorite since childhood.

What makes the sound so different from the other two earlier Hall & Oates songs that you reacted to is that Maneater is from their 80s period when they adopted the 80s sound and production techniques. The other two were from the 70s. Hall & Oates two biggest hits in the 80s were Maneater and Out of Touch. If it's the soul sound that really moves you, you must definitely listen to the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone. Elton John called the "the greatest" and David Bowie practically worshiped her. That doesn't even begin to touch on her influence on black musicians. To get some idea of the power of her music, you might want to check-out her live recording of "Mississippi Goddam"from the 60s - ruclips.net/video/LJ25-U3jNWM/видео.html
or, for something quite different "He Ain't Comin Home No More" - ruclips.net/video/SDufEYVEZ1A/видео.html

Hall and Oates owned the fucking world for a good long time. Wanna understand what the NBA was like in the '80s? Find the NBA promo that uses Hall and Oates' One one One as the music for the montage. Hall and Oates is what it was all about, and still is, and forever will be.

A tenor sax can be, without a doubt, the sexiest instrument there is. Of course it depends on the context of the song involved. But it's summed up by the lyrics found in a Dire Straits song, Expresso Love: "I was made to go with my girl just like a saxophone was made to go with the night."

Darryl Hall is touring this month - I'm gutted I'm in the UK and can't catch one of his concerts, because he's teaming up with the fantastic Todd Rudgren. The two have been friends and collaborators since the 1970s. If you can, catch some of Darryl's live sets from his house with different guests on YT - they are amazing. Two of my favourites are Darryl's and Todd's rendition of Todd's hits from the 1970s, "I Saw The Light" and "Can We Still Be Friends". The first is just uplifting and will put a huge smile on your face. The second is heartbreaking and beautifully sung by them both.
Todd Rundgren (also touring this year - sob) himself is a genius. Multi talented musician and songwriter, one of the earliest pioneers of prog rock and electronic music. (And apart from all that - his interesting personal life as the step father of Liv Tyler). I'd love you to listen to "Hello It's Me" which has featured in a few TV series (most recently it featured heavily in "And Just Like That"). There's a great live version on YT from a TV special from the 70s. It's a beautiful song.

This album came out when I was in Jr high. My first rock concert. City I grew up in, Toledo, Ohi, never had many bands play there because we are smack between Cleveland and Detroit, but Hall and Oates ALWAYS played our city. I still have this album from when I was 12 years old. Great album. I had a big crush on Daryl Hall because of his voice. He's only gotten better - as if that's possible- through the years because he never stopped playing, perfecting his craft, and that work shows. .
