You may want to add a paper towel under all your moisture sensors. The paper will absorb all of the water, so even a small stream of water will be detected by the sensors :D
I've been using Yolink sensors for a couple of years. They pick up water really quick. Also, you can link temperature sensors to the bulldog valve (or anything else you can dream up) to control it based on temperature.
I like the shut off system but Ball valves like that aren't meant to be cycled that often. You will likely find that at some point in the future even with the valve fully off that water is still flowing past the valve due to excessive wear in the internal plastic valve seats.. You can mitigate this in part by installing an all Brass valve but you will likely still have to replace O rings on the valve stem once a year if you are cycling this thing every week. If I understood the video correctly you likely filmed this months ago so you should probably go cycle that valve by hand to see if it's loose and or leaking internally.
I recommend installing the electronic shut-offs at any tank-style water heaters, as well. We had the water filter cannister split open. Even though I had turned off the main, there was enough back-pressure from the (three!) tanks to contribute to the flood. Flooded a computer, scanner, and two printers.
The flooding of your shop kit hen was unfortunate, however you recovered smartly. I really like how you researched a proper solution for protecting your shop, and kitchen from flooding in the future. I think that I will do the same for my home. Well done!
Yay for YoLink @ 11:47 I use their products very often :) Its a smart home system that doesn't use WiFi, it uses a long range, low power pulse of data to control devices. You can also get sensors linked to that hub for temperature and humidity as well, along with many other devices.
I don't think this is true. If it is, kindly explain. None of these things need to be connected to the outside world. None of your IOT devices should be able to talk to the internet. VPN to them.
Damn! What a headache, Johnny! 😬 I'm happy everything is solved! And, BTW, servos are a lot of fun, I love making stupid rc things with them, just to play... 😂 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
why would you use a plug in shut off valve if the water lines freeze when there isn't power? I get that I would at least minimize the damage but why not solve the issue? or have something that closes when there is water AND when you lose power?
Yeah that winter storm was something else. I and 95% of the people I work with took that Friday off because of the cold temps and the Blizzard we got here in NE Ohio.
Water is the worst! I suppose fire is pretty shitty too, but yeah, water. All your stuff is still there only is wet and wrecked! UGH. I feel your pain. That shut off unit is cool; I saw one like that on a The Build Show with Matt Reisinger (sp?).
Clever shutoff solution, but given the recent frequency of southern climates getting freezing temps, I would still move the water heater and pipes to a conditioned space or condition the space around the water heater and pipes. These freezing events are going to be more frequent and will likely get worse in the future.
My plan is to build a utility room in the attic which will enclose the furnace and water heater. I can have an extra vent added in the ductwork and insulate the room. This will at least help to mitigate this from happening again before I finish the rest of the attic space.
If you've added the water shutoff device to your smart "house" stuff and you have Alexa running routines, you probably have an Alexa/Echo in your shop or office space. If that is the case you should disable the timer functions of when to turn it off and on and instead link it to a voice-trigger routine. For example if you say "Alexa, I'm leaving" she will go in to Guard Mode and listen for running water, smoke alarms, and breaking glass. Add to the routine she triggers with that to turn the water off. Then when you come back you say "Alexa, I'm back" and you have a routine set to run when Guard Mode deactivates to turn the water on. If you don't do it this way you are going to show up early some day or want to stay late and the water will turn off anyways. Also, this way the water always turns off when you leave and on when you come back (even over night). Source: I have routines setup to do something very, VERY similar in my house.
Thanks for this tip! I do have Echos throughout the shop and was using a standard routine to control everything when arriving and leaving. I didn't realize I could do the same thing by changing the Guard modes and would have the added benefits from Guard. Just finished setting it up, looks like it'll work great!
Big fan of the channel but I also work for SimpliSafe, you should get some of our Water Sensors to add to your system, great for getting ahead of situations like this!
What state are you located in? I'm in Minnesota where it gets really cold and I'm lucky this hasn't happened to me. Great idea with that auto turn off device!
Why did the previous owner think it was a good plan to put plumbing in an unheated space? What other questonable choices did they make that will surprise you in the future?
Do not buy a box mattress. Get a tempurpedic. Best mattresses out there. Or just get a cheaper memory foam mattress like Ashley furniture. I have one and I put a memory foam topper ontop of it that is just like a tempurpedic bed. Hurt back too much to sleep on those box mattresses. Paid $1300 for a Casper one
I remember that day how is everything going to take a shower and understanding my bathroom was froze and I was in Jonathan County those McDevitt middl oh, I remember that day all my pipe froze at stairs in the shower and I’m gonna take one another 10 minutes and realize the hot water not running but the cold with the running and I was in the middle of the county and Johnson county in the state who
You really should have removed any and all drywall that was wet and/or showing mold growth. It's great that you neutralized it, but if it's embedded, chances are highly likely that it is on the backside of the drywall. Then covering it back up with cabinets creates the perfect dark environment for the mold to thrive and start to grow again. I'm certified in mold remediation, so I'm not just blowing smoke, just looking out for the safety of people in their homes and work spaces.
Yikes! 😮 my dad was a kinda old school philosopher, he’d say “The lessons you learned the hard way are the lessons you never forget” sorry this was a hard pill to swallow.

I'm really sick and tired of mattress sponsorships. You won't know if the mattress agrees with your back until at least 6 months of use. Yes there is a warranty but you can't just return the mattress whenever you want for a full refund. Each day that you keep the mattress decreases the amount of refund you can receive to have the mattress warrantied. I spent 5 grand on a purple mattress and sometimes it hurts sometimes it didn't but then after about 6 months it consistently started hurting and there was not a damn thing I could do. No one buys them because everybody knows about this trap.
Homie I love your content but why does ur take 6-7 MONTHS for you to get some videos out? That just seems like a crazy long time for a 10-20 minute video.

Thanks for the tip on the water shut off. Same reason I have not installed one so far. Stay safe.

Congrats on 1000000!❤
I have Yolink products in my house. Love them!
Man am I glad to live in a subtropical climate (south-east Queensland, Australia) where it never gets cold enough for snow, or for things to freeze.
Very interesting series man! Big thumbs up from Sweden. Don’t mind the haters.
Rookie mistake - how can a stud sensor possibly work if you are holding it?
why would you use a plug in shut off valve if the water lines freeze when there isn't power? I get that I would at least minimize the damage but why not solve the issue? or have something that closes when there is water AND when you lose power?
You know. Simpli safe makes water sensors. I highly recommend them in all your wet areas. But that valve switch works well too.
I have one in the bathroom, of course the water leak didn't make it to the sensor!
Yeah that winter storm was something else. I and 95% of the people I work with took that Friday off because of the cold temps and the Blizzard we got here in NE Ohio.
Not sure if 6 months is enough time for it to dry. Maybe stick it in a jar with rice
What about the black mold to follow
Excelente trabajo saludos 👍👌
Gracias!
nice Chapman baritone you got there

Water is definitely the enemy!
That’s actually a really nice industrial sink. I don’t doubt you could find a use for that in the shop.
It's a little too big for the sink area in the shop but I already have a stainless shop sink.
Why is one water valve in the cabinet to right of the sink base?
Where’d you put the new water heater?
Haven't installed one, no hot water at the shop currently!

You should install your new flooring before you install the lower cabinet's!
I'm going with LVP so I can't install the cabinets on top of the flooring.
I thought your water heater froze up because you lost power... an electronic shut off valve won't help in the same situation...
I would have already had the water off if I had this valve installed, I just forgot to turn the water off before I left for the holidays.
Sorry for your disaster. All your work
Thanks. Lowe's helping out. It shows. Someone cares
I thought Helix was your go to mattress.
Shutting the water off every weekend can weare out the valve. Since you got it on a safety switch its unecessery to shut it of constantly
And here I thought that Johnny was immune to swearing...
Hah definitely not!
Sorry Man that’s a bummer but I know you will make the best of it.

What this series has taught me is that the previous owner was lazy and tried to take the easiest routes of everything.
Why did the previous owner think it was a good plan to put plumbing in an unheated space?
What other questonable choices did they make that will surprise you in the future?
burying sharkbites in the wall immediately following a water leak.. bold move, cotton!
Why was there a water heater in a cold zone ?
No clue, it was that way when I purchased the building. I don't know how that passed code.
You go through a lot of mattresses 😂
Is this the new shop or your old shop
New shop, old shop is long gone!
This is in your shop?
Was that at your new workshop ?
Yes he said in his older videos that there was a live able space
