I remember being affected much more that I would have expected when Fraiser got killed. I liked her before that but I never realized how important she was to the show until then. It felt like the heart of the show had been ripped out. I recently watched that episode again and I think that is the only SG-1 episode that made me literally weep - even watching it again the tears were rolling.
The lines that get me every time : Janet Fraiser was an extraordinary person. She was kind and funny and talented. Above all, she was courageous. Try as I might, I could not find the words to honor her, to do justice to her life. Thankfully, I got some help. While words alone may not be enough, there are some names that might do. We often talk about those that give their lives in the service of their country, and while Janet Fraiser did just that, that's not what her life was about. The following are the names of the men and women who did not die in service, but who are in fact alive today, because of Janet. Major Samantha Carter. Doctor Daniel Jackson. Colonel Jack O'Neill. Teal'c. Sergeant Connie Smith. Major Ian Hules. Senior Airman Simon Wells...
In contrast to Star Trek, at least that show values their doctors. The doctor in Voyger for instance, initially was limited to the sick bay, because he was a hologram, then, they introduced the plotline of holoemitters and he could leave sickbay and even the ship. It threw up so many storylines that would simply never have happened otherwise. Poor Janet was criminally underused, in some episodes she was lucky to get 30 to 45 seconds screentime, but as sso as they want to kill her, they send her through the gate to the scene of a battle.
Teryl Rothery seems like a real, down-to-earth person. Great interview David! Hey Amazon! Let's get some new Stargate within the existing canon and bring back actress Teryl Rothery either as her Janet Fraiser character or as a new character. She's a gem!
I have managed employees for 37 years. I never have and never would fire, lay off or release anyone over the phone. And to phrase it "How would you feel?" just seems downright insensitive and bordering on cowardice. But maybe that is just Hollywood.
I believe that they were expecting to not get renewed after the Heroes two parter. So they wanted to kind of go out with a bang and maybe some finality. But then they got renewed and most of the writers actually regretted it I think.
I find it hard to watch and feel anything but disgust for treating Teryl in this way. You are right, how would you feel? Like you say, its bodering on cowardice, the guy didnt have the balls to tell her to her face. With regards to the reply, stating that they believed theat season was the last and wanted to go ou with a bang, what does that even mean? They didnt get rid of a main characters did they? Why does a character have to die if it is the last season, just cant work that out?
Brilliant interview David, Teryl is beautiful. The thing that gets me about this is, how clearly Teryl recalls this, what are we talking, thirteen or fourteen years? She remmembers it as if it where yesterday, the memory of that moment is still so raw, imagine how she must have felt at the time, i would imagine there where more than a few tears. She was part of a cast, a group of people, they must have been very close(i know what it is like to work with a small group of people), and, she gets a phone call to say, thats over. I mean, why does he bother asking her how she feels, when it was obvious the decision had already been made. What a lot of fans find particularly galling, is that the main characters, Jack, Daniel, Sam and Tealc, survive the most outrageous death defying experiences week after week, and thats fine, we know how plot armour works, but, when they want to kill a character off, they choose Janet, who, lets face it, most of the time she barely gets out of sickbay, let alone go through the gate.
There's a saying: "Sometimes you don't realize what's important to you until it's gone." When the decision was made letting Dr. Fraiser die, for me this was the beginning of the end of the series. I don't understand what purpose or message did it serve to story when Janet died, because it wasn't about casualties of war. Her death did nothing to anyone's character arc. I also never got why in that season finale did they reveal only at the end that it was her who died and not O'Neil.
