- Опубликовано: 3 апр 2024
- In this episode of “Behind the Walls” join ex-prison officer Sam Samworth as he delves into the grimy corners of prison life. This week Sam recounts his personal encounters with David Charlton the most stinking inmate to ever walk (or not) the halls of Strangeways Prison. With a reputation that precedes him this prisoner’s stench is so notorious it’s become the stuff of legend.
Sam explores the impact of living conditions on inmates and the psychological tactics employed by some to assert dominance. Don’t miss this eye-opening episode that will leave you holding your breath… literally!
David Charlton, who was featured in the ITV1 documentary “Strangeways,” was known as one of the prison’s most disruptive prisoners. During his stay, he claimed to be disabled and required staff to push him around the prison in a wheelchair, although medical staff asserted that he could walk. He was regularly abusive to staff and frequently soiled his cell. Charlton’s behaviour and the conditions of his stay highlight the challenges faced by both inmates and staff within the prison system.
David Charlton faced charges for racially abusing and harassing a black worker from Manchester Metropolitan University and two Asian nurses. Additionally, he was charged with racially abusing a black police officer. He pleaded guilty to all charges at Manchester Crown Court!

I am a MH nurse and can confirm this type of person is beyond difficult to deal with because, as you say, they have full control of their behaviour. People who have never worked in a prison or hospital environment think “to behave like this they must be ill” - nope, pure choice and free will. And to make the situation even more frustrating, when you try and provide the care they seek- there is resistance and abuse.
I have read your book - really interesting- thanks!
“Laid in bed, shat and peed himself for 3 days” genuinely reminded me of a hangover I had in 2015 after a night drinking cheap Chinese alcohol in a dodgy hotel.
Intentionally smelling bad is a form of assault in a confined situation.
I worked in forensic mental health services for 27 years. You'd be surprised how many David Charltons there are floating around.
@xp8952 So true! There are people who suck the services dry, and the people who actually need help fall through the net. I hope everything works out for you.
I don't for a second doubt what you're saying. I've gotten to that stage in life where _nothing_ you could tell me about people would surprise me. Fwiw though, for physical reasons, specifically ulcers from my feet to my knees (in the end, I _did_ actually lose one of my legs above the knee), I have, on occasion, really smelled, tbh, eye~wateringly bad! There have been occasions where I've unavoidably had to use public transport, or 'come to that', Accident & Emergency waiting areas, and let me tell you, the experience was Hellish, for everyone concerned! Obnoxious smells can literally bring people - let alone dogs - to the point of violence! I can tell you though, when you have leg ulcers that hurt e~ver~y _bit_ as much as they smell, being told "It's called A _Shower!_ ", or being sprayed down with 'Lynx' or 'Impulse' type products doesn't especially help ones' morale! (Before my own problems, I did once experience a similar situation 'from the other side', when an elderly, clearly homeless, woman got on the bus, and boy, yeah, was she 'minging'! Homeless or not, this wasn't on account of unwashed clothes, or even an unwashed body - you could smell the literal _rot!_ The poor woman was obviously quite conscious that she was 'offensive', not that the other passengers were about to leave her in any doubt! She only made it to the next stop before being 'vibed' off the bus, and the shame radiating from her was as evident as her odour. Had she not gotten off anyway, I suspect she would've been _put_ off, but I still regret not speaking up in her defence!)
Getting back to my _own_ story, and where it has some relevance to your comment, probably around this time I was hospitalized with septicaemia, and was put on intravenous antibiotics that unfortunately damaged my kidneys, requiring me to undergo dialysis. Then the fallback antibiotics had the weird effect of causing me to lose the use of my arms... you know those weeks when it seems like "you can't catch a break", lol?! I couldn't make wheelchair transfers, I couldn't eat, worst of all, I couldn't wipe my own backside... Having to ask for help with such activities was humiliating enough, but the worst part was (and it has to be said here, the individuals concerned were not going to be on 'Brain of Britain' anytime soon!), because my file said that, barring the obvious disability of my amputation, I was able~bodied, the nurse~carers (auxiliary nurses) _could - not - seem_ to get it into their heads that my arms really were like limp noodles, and I wasn't just playing some passive~aggressive game with them. I just feel _sooo_ lucky that my wife was still alive and could come in and help me with at least some of the basic tasks, and, in the end, get it across that this disability was 100% a real thing!
Still, given that I've seen (and in the end, had to come to the assistance of) paralyzed stroke patients who had dinner trays 'plonked' down in front of them, and then snatched away untouched on consecutive days, I really shouldn't have been too surprised at my treatment.
Let me say again, I'm not actually trying to contradict what _you're_ saying. I don't doubt for a second that there are people who get all kinds of weird kicks out of having people running around treating them like babies! Think of my reply more as a PSA to members of the public, or to often opinionated medical personnel who treat the patient's dossier as the Bible, while at the same time entirely dismissing the words out of the patients' mouths! (Just on the smell thing, necrotic or semi~necrotic flesh is not the only possible source of 'honestly aquired' repulsive odours; ill~fitting soma~, aka, colostomy~ bags, _legitimate_ urinary or faecal incontinence, or medications that, because of how they are metabolized, can cause body odour notwithstanding good personal hygiene practice, all come to mind, just 'off the top of my head'!
Anyway, apologies for the length of my, um, dissertation! (Never mind the Quality, just feel the Width 😁)
It's hard to believe what prison officers have to put up with... Thanks for posting.
I got borderline personality disorder, never layed in my own mess before
I remember that documentary shame its not available anymore.
was very funny 😂😂😂
It's on RUclips.
What was the documentary called
@@keithwilcox9326 Strangeways I think? Just type his name in as well.

I had a cat called David.
A proper gentleman.
I miss that cat.
Never gave me a moments problem, and never shat where he shouldnt.
RIP dave
Bit random but funny! 😂🐾😿
My stepdad was a prison officer for 40+ years finishing up as a hospital officer in Gartree, I always wanted to hear stories, especially about the high-profile cons he looked after (like Brady) but he wouldn't talk about his work which only piqued my curiosity even more so I'm glad to have found your channel - subscribed!
I worked in a mortuary for 25 years and theirs nothing like the smell of bodily fluids, you never get used to it even through respirators used in post mortem the smell could knock you off your feet
Im a retired psych nurse, i believe you sam ive met many just like him
Hi Sam I remember your previous videos on this guy cannot imagine dealing with such a complex individual as a disabled person find David’s behaviour difficult to comprehend hope wherever David is hopefully he's living a peaceful life thanks for providing your perspective on this individual Its Very important
This video is amazing Sam. Thankyou so much for taking the time
yet again to share tales from inside.
He's not dark actually.. he's Ginger. 😂
Interesting stuff mate, well done 👏
Thank you, Sir, for your commitment to the service that protects ordinary people from unhinged degenerates and perverts.
Interesting insight to the reality of your work ….. great job you did
Hats off to you chief I have OCD I couldn’t have done what you had to get involved in.
This is the funniest episode you’ve done so far 😆🤣
Especially the part about rolling around the bed and shitting 🙈😂
The episode where the cat was taking a bog in the background while Sam was talking did it for me.
Hang on a minute im just grabbing my old man's gas mask from when he was a soldier for this one 😂
My God Sam what you have to deal with, I have heard of people like this before but you can never get your head round it. To still have compassion for him shows you have a good heart. I feel such sorrow that human beings can sink to that level. I have OCD myself it would not only vomit but would more then likely pass out . The funny thing is I did cat rescue and have dogs now and am used to dealing with animal waste But they would not do that unless they were sick or old. God bless you darling. Strangeways to put it mildly.
How do Sam, I'm sure I read somewhere that David originally had come from quite a successful career - I forget what his profession was but it must have nosedived spectacularly at some point to get to this stage. Shame the 2011 documentary was pulled - I have actually seen it and it was one of the most honest portrayals of life for prison officers out there.
Hi Sam,
I remember that series my mate was a PO in it Officer Wyse he left the service due to cuts in staffing and it was just kicking off all the time
I believe it kicked off one day and he got injured by one of his fellow officers.
Good to hear you chatting about prison again Sam x
Hi again Sam. Reminds me of one I had on the mental health landing in Armley, Leeds. He used to make model animals from his faeces and flick them at you when you opened his observation hatch. You had to make sure you kept your mouth shut. 😮
Lovely home Sam. Enjoy all your stories.
Jesus Christ sam that's fuckin insane marra. Trying to imagine that shite you seen without feeling sick. God bless man ❤
Worked in a care home in Liverpool where David Charlton was staying between 2019 and 2023.
Nothing much has changed for David. Still soiling his room, abusive to staff and racist.
He's still alive and doing his usual performance.
All that being said I actually got on well with him and managed to get him to play ball with washing and going the toilet properly which took a while to get to.
That's very challenging...on many levels...I'm not sure I can cope...
Love the boho style interior Sam. xx
I remember that documentary. As if someone sent him tha letter WTF 😂😂😂 Love ur work mate
Good show Sam. Wish u good in new chapter this side over the wall
Hi Sammo , just noticed my subscription was cancelled ! I resubscribed so all is good , hope you & the family are all ok especially your daughter . Much love from a fellow Northener who loves to hear a friendly voice . A
Its RUclips that knocks your scrips off bro, dont know why they do it
I remember the documentary but can’t remember what his offences were, hats off to the staff having to deal with this sort of personality.
Why has the documentary been taken down? Sam it was brilliant hope you’re well 😊
I remember that documentary so big up from Scotland
Ey up man.
His F offs are legendary.
Hilarious.
😂😂
This is why God created fire hoses.
Absolutely!
Human rights.
You are bringing memories flooding back from long ago when i just could not understand the guys who had a decent shower they could use to get cleaned up every day inside but the amount of smelly gits was a lot.
Me? I was at the gym 3 times a day Mon through Fri so i showered 2 times a day until i had to stop the gym due to crushing several disc.
Fs seen a few people with a screw loose who done this in their Peter.
I thought I was bad cos my “co pilot” I’ll use that term loosely cos he flew solo on this one lol. He had a stye in his eye, woke up the day he was meant to go the health care with two swollen eyes. He refused to go, gave him the option of hitting the bell or hitting the route for the health care. Managed to get moved across the landing into someone’s cell who did wash 😂
I remember watching him on TV .
Legend of THE HIGHEST calibre I salute 🫡 D.C
😂😂😂😂rolling in the deep,,,shit,,,,😂the way ye described his letters he got sent😂
lol, pmsl!!! Sorry for laughing he was funny!!!
Ey up lad,, hope your well, been a long time, hope you and your lass are well, things are different from our last video but that's life. Good to see you still going strong mate 👊👍

5.40 seconds WTF... people are so strange,,, omg i nearly chocked on my coffee 🍵 there. 😮😆
He was a civil servant in north east
Rember the doco very well
I'm still laughing about the woman with the plastic sheet on the bed 😂😂😂😂
Omg this guy 🤣🤣🤣 I remember the documentary. I work in strange ways and still see similar things but not wholely off one person like him my god. Vile
😩 poor you
It's disgusting that nice, genuine, hard working people have to put up with this abomination. Like you said, he was seen by many experts and found to be normal, so no excuse for it.
Sam where is the story about Ben and den the 2 lads who helped you when you were being attacked? I loved that one. Shows officer and prisoner relationships work positively
Ow do Sam! I remember watching the 3 part documentary and was wincing/retching about him. I remember saying to my fella at the time "The poor staff. I couldn't put up with him, never mind all the other people, genuine people they have to look after, on top of him..."
I heard that he actually used to work for the DWP, before he started his messing. Any truth to it? xx
Edit: I'm going to become a member in a couple of weeks, Sam. I'm not a member of any RUclips channel, but yours - is the most worthy one for me. You're the most down to earth, sincerest fella and I love your content. I've just got a few bills for the next couple of weeks. Anyway, I'm fan girling and I don't care 😁 hope youre having a lovely Sunday ✨
David Charlton; Washington, Tyne and Wear's finest 😩😂
The lying in bed together and shitting did me Sam😂😂😂 brilliant tho mate keep safe lad
Burty and his famous "thats not gravy" comment
Oh dear it takes all sorts, and sounds like you've seen them all Sam 👍
Is there any more room in strange ways because I think I might have to go there after watching this video I'm definitely gonna have a couple of nightmares tonight
I vaguely recall you from my many short stays in prison during the 90s mainly and I did indeed first taste prison in the mid 80s pre riots so I can confirm prison was so very much more civilised after riots and when they reopened strangeways fully following the riots it was a better place in every way including staff - I'm amazed still at some of the complaints etc some inmates came up with - holding up queue in the servery because they had not sent enough gravy once !! I often remember having to remind padmates that if they'd experienced prison 10 years earlier they'd not complaint today about such trivial issues - too many people suddenly acquire morals and rigid standards about wages despite never working outside prison !! - lastly although I always just accepted my time in prison mainly because I'd committed the wrong and I was caught and sent to jail - I quickly figured out which staff were approachable and would try their level best and a small minority of staff it was best not to need any interaction with - of all the many staff I got to know and have any dealings with over many short stays usually starting in strangeways I have to say there were many decent staff - including Mr Samworth who did have an interest in doing their job as best as possible and were just working people - mortgages to pay - kids to raise - the list goes on but they're only doing a job in a hostile workplace at times - I always saw this and never remember having any cause for upset or complaint - in the end after some good conversations with some staff I inevitably got to know due to being on same wing daily and playing cards with some staff or pool I realised they were just hardworking breadwinners supporting their families and only wanted to do their job - most staff overall are decent normal people !!
Strange ways indeed.
Bridger new cell mate now that will be funny
Exorcism did anyone get a priest’s advice? Great content I like chilled!
Obviously, the creature is an instrument of the devil.
Strangeways is definetly avalable online found it in 1 second
I remember watching that when it was first viewed,
He was mental,
I felt sorry for him and thinking of you guy's dealing with day in Day out its mental
U can find clips of him.i just found 7 clips of him.on u tube
How ya put wid that I do not know God bless you pal
After watching this I googled his name he comes up on u tube
im on a dirty protest!
I have Chronic Arthritis in my hands and knees but i have to go out walking everyday so my bones don't fuse up quicker than they should, as i know it's inevitable that ill end up with statue sydrome. My father is severe and my wee nanna had to have an operation to have her hands and feet fused together. I'm not looking forward to it. ❤
My mam is a psychiatric nurse and I've never heard any stories like this!
Wow, the phrase dirty bastard doesn't cover that one! 😳
Wasn't this the fella who used to work in the benefits office and he got fed up of seeing people getting money for nothing and that's why he behaved like this.
@jimbobalob2491-Yes I’m sure it was him.
I could of sworn i saw him about 4 years sat in wheelchair blocking the pavement outside hope hospital in Salford
My mates mam used to work with him at the DWP! seriously she did
Do you not do interviews anymore?
Yes from time to time but they are very time consuming and we are focusing more on my personal experiences with prison life and the world in general ☕️🍰
@@RealPorridgePodcast your videos are great! Keep going. I’m waiting for my fitness test for hmp berwyn , do you know anything about that prison?
I have worked in care homes in the past and that sort of behaviour of David Charlton is not as uncommon as people think. Shocking. I remember some gentleman coming in who could walk around and toilet himself and the social workers found out he had been pooing in carrier bags and placing them on his stairs and landing in his home. That is one that sticks in my mind. 💩🤢
Was best friends with David's brother as a child . David was brought up in a ok family .
Thanks for the comment, how is David now?
@RealPorridgePodcast I dont know not seen any of the family for years .. I did hear David had worked for social services Longbenton newcastle , and grew tired of giving benefits out while he worked hard , so decided to take the path he did . He's from washington tyne and Wear
Imagine an abled bodied man not going to the bog, shite and piss himself, refusing to walk, just because he wanted cared for. He's basically an adult baby. I feel sorry for the people who had to clean up after mr stinky.
Still rabbiting on Sam 😮 , talk the head off a penny 😂 ✌️❤️👍, God bless you
I think the real issue is, which department be it prison ,social care, Pyschological etc...without being sectioned...how do you actually care for this guy..
100%...manipulative, control ..stuff..
Just my opinion...Great channel with so many people totally oblivious to what the staff dealing with these people rightly or wrongly do/have to put up with on a daily basis....absolutely wear out the most empathetic /caring person..
Hat doffed to you sir 👍👏
I remember watching that Sammo, but i cant remember what he was in jail for in the first place?
Check our community page for David’s back story 🍰☕️
I remember the documentary and what a character David was obviously had some mental illness to behave the way he did, can't find the documentary anymore anywhere unfortunately
come on boss you know you got him as a facebook friend 😂
Besties 😂🍰☕️
@@RealPorridgePodcast lol👍
Where is he now ?
From what I've heard he's now in a care home.
Ffs 🤦♂️ You guys (and gals) are bloody heroes! Nobody should have to put up with that filth 🤬
I think David was brilliant people laugh and take the piss but he keep all of youse on your toes not as stupid as he looked lol
Wonder where he is now? Is he still alive?
Yes he’s in Liverpool England
So he claimed not to be able to walk but he could trash his cell and throw feces. Ok. I remember watching something with him on it and was nearly vomiting just seeing it
I bet you know my old social worker? She worked at strangewsys for some years. She actually turned the place on its head.
Apparently the staff caused most of the issues there a culture of racism, sexism etc , was the culture of the screws.
Place needed closing down.
That's made me laugh
His toenails were on a different level of disgusting! 😂
Disrespectful to staff and inmates ,didn't he know you were all giving him the care and he disrespected you .❤❤❤❤
Well Sam, I think I'll give mi Bakewell Tart a miss .... For now 👍😊
I couldn’t have dealt with him at all. I would have to have quit my job!
What sort of life did this guy have prior to prison? Can imagine he was raised poorly for his complex needs and abused. Interested to hear mate but not sure if that sort of thing is disclosed when people get sent to prison. Cheers mate!
I had to turn this off. I am having Cauliflower Cheese tonight
Oh he is some state for the one person.
I know he was absolutely disgusting 🤮 but did give us some laughs on that show
Hard to keep a straight face there sam I'm pishn myself lol.
My hubby worked at Long Lartin for 27yrs and the stories he told me about how some prisoners would smear their poop over the locks, windows, walls..they would be moved to another cell only to repeat the scenario…other prisoners would be paid to clean the poop up!! I’m sorry but the prisoner who smeared the poop should be made to clean it up!! 😡
it was called manic depression in the 60s
