Ruthie Henshall is criminally underrated. Every line she sung in the 10th anniversary was fuelled with emotion, and still sounded amazing. The best Fantine hands down.

I do like susan boyle's version just because the emotional kick that moments before the audience were shaming her dream. not perhaps the most technically accomplished but it really works on the theatrical level. She is a woman shamed who's song transcends her current situation. Only truly worked for that performance but i still like the way she belts it.
Gregg Hanson In a movie version they don’t have to sing as loudly and clearly as they do when they’re performing live, so in a movie version they can focus on the emotion more than on being clear and loud. Plus in a movie version you can do the take multiple times (In the movie they took 20 takes and then picked one of them)
The last one, Leah Salonga definitely has the perfect voice and raw emotions! Nothing beats that. She is on a different league as you instantly connect with her even if I am not used to hearing broadway or classical music.
Agreed, Leah Salonga has a beautiful voice. Her performance however doesn’t hold a candle to Anne Hathaway’s. I cannot watch Ms Hathaway’s heart-wrenching performance without sobbing like a child. I was drawn into every painful emotion Anne portrayed, what an actress!!!!
Voice: Leah Solanga Acting: Anne Hathaway Favorite: Ruthie Henshall (I grew up listening to her version so I’m biased, but she will always be my favorite Fantine)
Gregg Hanson I didn’t say that because she was singing in French, I’ve sang in French, Italian, Latin, German, and Russia. Furthermore, I made my comment because of the strength and the support and the resonance of her voice...bye girl 👋🏾
peter pepper sorry no even lily Collins in the recent bbc drama of this is better she can’t sing this powerful ballad decently . And no not lea I find ruthie henshall and patti Duke a lot more professional .
I really disagree with everyone saying Ramin. That version while musically beautiful lacked emotion. Anne Hathaway's which I've seen a lot too lacked the musical technique. Her song had so much meaning. Her acting is the best. She has so much emotion. But you asked who sang it the best and her singing is not the best. My personal favorite would have to be Lea because she captures all of it. I also loved Tomomi Kahara her voice is stunning. She captured my heart. Her performance crossed the language barrier and made me feel.
Tomoni did a really good job. I always brace myself to hear Japanese singers because something in the way the language works (pronouncing things) gets in the way of technique, the sound is rarely full enough to properly carry the note. I've noticed the same issue with Thai dubs for Disney - it's not that the people can't sing, it's that their language is somehow stunting the song. I was pleasantly surprised by her.
Btw I kind of dislike how Ramin changed the pronouns in his version. The song sung from a male perspective doesn't make sense anyway as he can't be left pregnant with a child... changing the pronouns is nothing more than a literary "no homo" and it annoys me a little.
Are you aware Anne Hathaway is a singer before an actress , to say that she lacks the technique is a gross statement and she gets extra points for singing under character since singing while crying is one of the most difficult things to do, if not the most difficult. Try singing while your throat is closing
When someone weeps can tear you. More emotional doesn't mean better singer nor better song version. The question is - WHO SANG IT BETTER not WHO PLAY THE ROLE BETTER. Do you see the difference. Hathaway can play the role very good, she is good PERFORMER but she is NOT a very good SINGER. Not even close.
nikalsson You know you don't have to say her opinion is wrong right? She thinks Anne sang it better so let her be, and yes the video title says who sang it better but that can be interpreted in many ways. It could be who sang it better where it's better sounding, or who sang it better role wise. She interpreted the title to who sang it better role wise so that's her opinion and it isn't right or wrong.
There is nothing wrong to like a performer or singer more. However there is difference between acting and singing and some people can't differ. When the question is - who SANG it better then in singing there are rules, techniques, breath control, supported or not supported notes, resonance, vocal range, voice control, agility and so on. In singing the comparison who is better the personal opinions based on a personal taste doesn't mean anything. You may still like someone who is not the best singer, there is nothing wrong with that, but you shouldn't be mistaken by their singing capabilities.
nikalsson To be honest I did kinda misinterpret the question. In terms of technical singing ability Anne Hathaway isn't the best obviously, but the way she sang it (her performance) is my favourite. Sorry for causing a fight.
nikalsson you missed one thing, no pays attention to any of the things you said if emotion overrules which it did. Unlike the other singers, she told her story to the watchers and told the story with such passion which makes the singing great but her story incredibly powerful which is the whole point of the songs. None of these singers proved that they were unique other than they can breathe correctly and use good technique which any great singer can do, but also when you are singing the song, make sure you are singing from your heart, not your ass. That's what makes a singer great.
indeed! it wasn't called a dream cast for nothing! every one was perfect for their roles! Henshall, Wilkinson, Quast, Salonga, and Ball were incredible playing their roles!
In this genre, there are singers and then there is Lea Salonga. Leas is in a league all by herself. Nobody can articulate every word, every syllable with such perfect pitch and expression. There's not a song she sings where she isn't the best. Check her out at Fierstien's 54 for the intimate performance of your life. It was a night of amazement! If you want to be moved look her up on RUclips singing Via Dolorsa. When I meet my maker, please G-d, have a Lea song blasting... She's adorable, funny, charming and most importantly has a gift from G-d like no other... That voice! Stunning perfection.
You made me go through the end of the video to see Lea, after pausing it right after Anne Hathaway. I thought there's no point hearing another. And I was about right. The only mention I'd make after that point would that of Ruthie Henshow. The last representation was a bit overdone in my mind. I'm no specialist, that's just how I perceive it.
I think maybe you didnt actually listen to all of the performances or perhaps you just dont understand pitch and emotion? All of these women display a fair control over their singing. Kudos for trying to sound smart by using the word diction though.
It's a tie between in Anne and Lea. Lea adds anger and fear, Anne adds so much misery which I is what the song needs. They better genetically engineer and reproduce a child (including Ramin's genes too please)
You really can’t compare AnnE with the rest because hers is filmed for a movie, with a different context, atmosphere and requirements. Of course she will come off as emotionally better than the rest! Try crying like she did and SINGING at the same time. Most of these are live singing and Broadway level of acting. Can’t compare it to a Les Miserables film made for MOVIES.
McKinley Klotz 100% live vocals? Chile, only an idiot would believe that. Even live vocals from recorded concerts are dubbed at some point. And AnnE is doing it for the movies, not for stage acting, which is totally different. That is why comparing her performance with actual stage performances is not good because the set-ups are totally different and she has more room to emote as an actress and has more time in between takes.
PickleJarr did you not read me say “they didn’t use backtracks a lot” don’t call me an idiot when you completely read what I wrote wrong lmao. And I agree, maybe on stage Anne would be different but her Oscar performance didn’t show anything different so 🤷🏼♀️
I agree. You can't compare her to singers who didn't have to act on stage. You pretty much don't have to start acting all dramatic for a stage concert.
Patti LuPone puts no emotion into it. She's a great singer, don't get me wrong, but she doesn't sound like a woman who was left broke after having a child.
Not in the version he chose. Her Broadway version and the one from a concert she did in the 90s is WAAAAAAAAY better. Patti LuPone is one of the greats, for sure.
Reeve Coble it's because she's not in character. She has a method of getting into character and singing as that character. Listen to her on the original recording. Also, check out her performances of Evita and Sweeney Todd too for proof.
Finally! Yes. thank you. Lea is great, but I honestly did not like her rendition of this. Ann had me captivated and applauding when I first saw the movie. In context, it is fantastic. But yes, Ruthie is the best for the all around. Classic.
Rachelle Ann Go did it for me. Ruthie is ok course the classic and to be honest every time I see Ann Hathaway sing that song I am reduced to a big blob of tearful manhood. For pure execution and vocals I think Rachelle get the 🥇
Ruthie Henshall is my Fantine now and forever...Ruthie, Judy Kuhn, and Lea Salonga were vocally perfectly suited to their respective roles in the Les Mis 10th Anniversary cast recording (with Judy as Cosette and Lea as Eponine)---the best of the cast recordings in my opinion. That being said, I also love the quality and timbre of Alienette Coldfire's voice. Some of these performances are so out of context with the atmosphere of the song (where at one extreme you have Anne Hathaway fully immersed in the character, while at the other extreme you have several such as Patti Lupone performing in a cabaret/variety show setting) that it's tough to weigh the overall performances and make comparisons.
Boyle has a natural pretty voice with zero expression. She has become popular because people have never heard a person with a real voice but she's not a great singer.
Ruthie Henshall: Her voice almost breaks during the bridge - on purpose. She conveys the despair and hopelessness of her situation with a skill that has been emulated a thousand times. Anne Hathaway's performance was ground breaking too. This is musical theater - it's not enough to sing the song, one has to advance the heartbreaking story. But the fact is, this is such a genius number, I can't listen to it without loving the artistry of all who sing it well.
Are we all just gonna hop over Susan Boyle's performance? I mean seriously, give that woman props! She performed every single note of the scale with vibrato!
I actually really really like Ruthie's. It matches Fantine well, in my opinion. Lea, Anne and everyone else did amazing too though! It's a beautiful song
Susan Boyle NAILED IT... on live Television in one take, then completely turned around the hanging judges and "Gong Show" convicting audience. She demonstrated presence without the assist of theatrical training, makeup artists, credentials, costume, or even benefit of the doubt. The audience was in standing ovation within the first 30 seconds.
I feel like rachelle's goes under appreciated, it is honestly an amazing cover of this song, acting wise I don't think anyone will top anne and lea's vocals are just amazing and beautiful
There are countless good singers in the world who can sing this song beautifully. I think to judge who sang it the best you do have to consider technique and sound as well as emotion. I think Celinde Shoenmaker sounded the best, while Anne Hathaway wins hands down for emotional connection... but of course, Lea Salonga always takes it because she has the balance just right.
Thank you!! I can’t even hit the bottom few notes in this song, but the top notes aren’t even high at all I don’t see how this is considered a soprano solo by anybody
I’m a tenor and that “apart” note is within the range that I speak at. I’m sure it would be hard for a soprano to try to sing that. I feel like this should be a mezzo soprano part since the highest note is still pretty comfortably within the mezzo range.
1. Anne's version is incredible and yes, was done in one take, but my heart will always be with the theatre performers who have to get it right twice a day, everyday of the week. 2. Ruthie Henshall will always be my absolute favourite with Lea Salonga very very close behind.
Rachelle Ann Go - now that was some emotion; whatta voice! Anne Hathaway - she might not be the best, but DAMN, did she put the UMPH and emotion behind it *cries* Ruthie Henshall - nailed it.
The thing about Anne Hathaway's version that I love so much is that she knows how to sing well (damn she's good at operatic singing), but instead her choice was not to showcase the song but the raw emotion behind it. I love the song and the emotion behind it, but when you sing it cleanly, you still lose some (not all) of the raw weight of the scene.
@@jtopaz I've actually changed my opinion actually on this after watching Sideway's disection of the movie le mis, but say anything about this performance, but she CAN sing well. She was just deciding to act in this one and not sing as much which does not work structurally with the musical.
@@kathleendomenico8661 Yes you can feel it, but I watched a Sideways video on why les mis has a structure to the music and is important to the musical. The question is "Who SANG it better?" The answer is Lea. Obviously. Hathaway is a great actress...but clearly not on the level of most of these singers.
@@lucaisaia4145 definitely hathaway was good. In singing skills alone, she is beat, but what nets her a win is the combination of deeply cutting emotion. You hear the anguish a character has while also singing well.
@@user-ze5oz7yn5v A much deserved Oscar win for her imo. I do think Lea did sing the best but also, how about Ramin, I mean he’s a pro singer so I’d expect him to do it decently, but he surprised me in the high range.
I'm quite upset that nobody else recognises Ruthie Henshall as the best Fantine of all time 😔 Celinde is a very close second, though, and I've had the pleasure of seeing her perform Christine Daeé live in London, she was equally phenomenal then!
I'll go for Lea and Ruthie, but you can't deny how powerful Anne's emotion in singing this song, not to mention the fact that she's crying. Its superb!
It is pleasant to listen to and the one I have on my show tunes playlist. I wouldn't classify it as the best, but it definitely earned a spot in this video.
It was a rule that Ryan Murphy only used autotune on songs that obviously had it already, like tik tok. No autotune was used on that song. Watch the glee project
I think lea sang it best whereas anne portrayed it best, well anne is an amazing actress. I think that's what made the film amazing, I've seen the play live dozens of time now but I felt something different when I watched the film.
You can't really compare acting in Broadway vs acting in movies. You don't have camera zoom in Broadway. Which is why much of the emotion is in the voice. The voice has to convey the emotion and story. But put Anne in a Broadway production and she's mediocre at best.
Lana Del Taco please tell me you’re kidding whilst I applaud the acting but because she had to sing and can’t do it properly that’s where it falls flat for me
These should really be split into two categories: performance and concert. I think it's best exemplified by Sojung Lee and Anne Hathaway (because they were side-by-side) both sang it well but since Lee was singing in a concert or recital setting, she can focus on her vocal technique more whereas Hathaway has to juggle that with acting the part and she (along with all the other singers who was performing as Fantine) has to maybe make an acting choice that might not necessarily show her voice at their best. The two beautiful harmonies that were done by Idina Menzel and Lea Michele, and Celtic Woman, for example, would not work in a performance setting, likewise, Anne Hathaway's emotional rendition might be considered too much in a recital. A recital or performance is neither superior or inferior to the other but the focus and intention of the singer is different, so I think it's best if you group all the ones singing the song outside of playing the character in one group, and those singing in character in another and then ask who did it better for each category.
Anne's version makes me cry. I think its a song full of hurt but also with anger - that makes it soulful with no need of showy notes; that's giving justice to that beautiful song 🌿

Is it okay to take artistic license with a song by singing it in an "uglier" way to better match the visual depiction on the screen?
Ruthie Henshall is criminally underrated. Every line she sung in the 10th anniversary was fuelled with emotion, and still sounded amazing. The best Fantine hands down.

I do like susan boyle's version just because the emotional kick that moments before the audience were shaming her dream.
not perhaps the most technically accomplished but it really works on the theatrical level. She is a woman shamed who's song transcends her current situation.
Only truly worked for that performance but i still like the way she belts it.
1.Lea Salonga
2.Anne Hathaway
3. Rachelle Ann Go
Go did an amazing job
Amen!
I absolutely adore Lea Salonga, but Anne gets this one
Hard to argue that. IMO Salonga was the best...Hathaway was wonderful.
love how there are 2 filipinas here 💅
Movie version: Anne Hathaway hands down ; Live stage: Lea Salonga ...
there's no such thing as a movie version and a stage version. It's about the music and only the music.
Periodt
Agreed, Leah Salonga has a beautiful voice. Her performance however doesn’t hold a candle to Anne Hathaway’s. I cannot watch Ms Hathaway’s heart-wrenching performance without sobbing like a child. I was drawn into every painful emotion Anne portrayed, what an actress!!!!
Voice: Leah Solanga
Acting: Anne Hathaway
Favorite: Ruthie Henshall (I grew up listening to her version so I’m biased, but she will always be my favorite Fantine)
I agree with you on Ruthie, IMO she manages to strike the balance between vocals and acting better than anyone else.
definitely the girl singing it in French!!!!!!!!! Alienette her voice was so strong and resonant
Thats also a filipina
Thats also a filipina
Jesus Christ yes, a beautiful and powerful voice!!
like singing in French is brain surgery? Every trained singer on earth learns to sing in English, French, Italian and many in German.
Gregg Hanson I didn’t say that because she was singing in French, I’ve sang in French, Italian, Latin, German, and Russia. Furthermore, I made my comment because of the strength and the support and the resonance of her voice...bye girl 👋🏾
If we are judging on all round performance, then look no further than Anne Hathaway in the film. Lea Salonga gets my vote for the best voice.
I also felt Lea had the most passion of the theater versions.
peter pepper she has my vote and Ruth hensall
You can't compare a singer to songstresses, and then again Annas performance was the acting not the singing. Fail comparison.
peter pepper sorry no even lily Collins in the recent bbc drama of this is better she can’t sing this powerful ballad decently . And no not lea I find ruthie henshall and patti Duke a lot more professional .
1. Lea Salonga
2. Anne Hathaway
3. Judy Kuhn
4. Ruthie Henshall
RUTHIE HENSHAW
The emotions were expressed.
Lea Salonga was born for this. Anne is an actress so she has an edge with the delivery of a very emotional song.
Lea Salonga is also an actress, she’s just not as good as delivering the emotion.

😂😂😂😂😂 LOLOLOLOLOLOL!
He's not singing it in a rendition of the musical, I would expect some emotion but it's not absolutely necessary.
Are you aware Anne Hathaway is a singer before an actress , to say that she lacks the technique is a gross statement and she gets extra points for singing under character since singing while crying is one of the most difficult things to do, if not the most difficult. Try singing while your throat is closing
1) Ruthie Henshall
2) Lea Salonga
3) Anne Hathaway not
necessarily for voice
but for emotion
Ruthie's voice is very unique, in a very pleasant way. She is my favourite Fantine.
I like Anna Hathaway's the best because it has so much emotion. The others are all amazing singers but her's made me cry my eyes out.
Just as Lea Salonga will always be my Eponine and Colm will be my Valjean...Ruthie will always be my Fantine.

She's the best Fantine 💜
Lea hands down
These two ladies hands down :)
Ruthie Henshall, forever, I cry everytime on each of heir numbers in les mis, its insane, the feelings she conveys.
Anne’s has the most emotion and rawness. And her version is right after Fantine becomes a prostitute which gives it a whole other level of despair.
This is Ruthie Henshall’s song! Especially when she sings “but he was gone when Autumn came.” Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it!
I agree. Ruthie Henshall did the best vocal for this in that performance, and no one (including herself) has been able to top it since then.
indeed! it wasn't called a dream cast for nothing! every one was perfect for their roles! Henshall, Wilkinson, Quast, Salonga, and Ball were incredible playing their roles!
Lexxtech18 yep! Ruthie’s the best
Yes!!!! Shivers! I don’t know why they didn’t leave her until the very end to catch this exact bit.
idk why but seeing christina grimmie made me want to burst into tears rip christina
Ruthie Henshall is really good. Watch her sing the entire song on the 10th anniversary performance. Lea voice and phrasing is always the best.
Michael Cohen. Best comment ever.

Lea!
Lea Salonga. Her dictions are on point. Others were just shouting she was singing.
A Man Child this person knows true music. Lea and Beebo, true music people
I think maybe you didnt actually listen to all of the performances or perhaps you just dont understand pitch and emotion? All of these women display a fair control over their singing. Kudos for trying to sound smart by using the word diction though.
There is quite a difference between 'shouting' and 'belting'.
Lea Salonga both in "on my own" and this song...
The way Anne Hathaway sings 'shame' brings me to tears. The raw emotion in her face and voice is extravegant
It's a tie between in Anne and Lea. Lea adds anger and fear, Anne adds so much misery which I is what the song needs. They better genetically engineer and reproduce a child (including Ramin's genes too please)
Lea Salonga steals my heart again and again every time I hear her sing
You really can’t compare AnnE with the rest because hers is filmed for a movie, with a different context, atmosphere and requirements.
Of course she will come off as emotionally better than the rest! Try crying like she did and SINGING at the same time.
Most of these are live singing and Broadway level of acting. Can’t compare it to a Les Miserables film made for MOVIES.
You do know that the movie was filmed with live vocals?? They didn’t use backtracks a lot
And I agree, maybe on stage Anne would be different but her Oscar performance didn’t show anything different so 🤷🏼♀️
@@mckinleyklotz4043 pls search on how many times Anne need to make that scene... while on live stage, theres no room for mistakes..
I agree. You can't compare her to singers who didn't have to act on stage. You pretty much don't have to start acting all dramatic for a stage concert.
Lea Salonga's flawless diction is always so refreshing.
Patti LuPone puts no emotion into it. She's a great singer, don't get me wrong, but she doesn't sound like a woman who was left broke after having a child.
I've always thought the same thing, though I love Patti LuPone in other roles.
Also in the run she detected not to put emotion into it till halfway to have a buildup then she ends crying
Reeve Coble Exactly
Ruthie Henshall has the best balance between vocal technique and emotion.
I would have to say I agee with you!
Finally! Yes.

For pure execution and vocals I think Rachelle get the 🥇
Ms Salonga is just soooo good. And the 10 th anniversary ' dream cast' is that.
no she is excellent. Anne Hathaway is soooo good.
Bellow, there can only be one, singing and acting in the 25th Anniversary Lea Salonga
Lea Salonga. Given that her performance was live, no auto-tune or anything else. Just so pure perfection. 💕
Lea Salonga and Anne Hathaway. Invokes emotion

Rui The Person who Wants to Nap Ruthie’s is my absolute fav!!! She’s really very good at the cry-y songs.
Anne Hathaway because of that stellar performance and still sounding incredible and Lea Salonga because I think it's impossible for her to sound bad.
And shut a certain judge right up…..
That was epic
I think she understood the song better than all the starlets singing it. And moments before the crowd had been literally laughing at her 'dream'.
I feel like rachelle's goes under appreciated, it is honestly an amazing cover of this song, acting wise I don't think anyone will top anne and lea's vocals are just amazing and beautiful
Anne’s performance still touches me. It was so raw and absolutely absorbing
Judy Kuhn is amazing too though
anne hathaways voice gives the song that piece the story its pathos that is heartfelt. It is of its time yet timeless.

Am I the only soprano here that can’t sing this song (at least the in the original key) because of the low note on “apart”?
Thank you!! I can’t even hit the bottom few notes in this song, but the top notes aren’t even high at all I don’t see how this is considered a soprano solo by anybody
@@ohnoimsam9634 same... my high range is decent but my lower range can only go to a G when I'm sick
I’m a tenor and that “apart” note is within the range that I speak at. I’m sure it would be hard for a soprano to try to sing that. I feel like this should be a mezzo soprano part since the highest note is still pretty comfortably within the mezzo range.
I am dat opposite who sings the low notes like 👍 but high notes are a no go for me😞. Gal with low range over here 👋
I relate
1. Anne's version is incredible and yes, was done in one take, but my heart will always be with the theatre performers who have to get it right twice a day, everyday of the week.
2. Ruthie Henshall will always be my absolute favourite with Lea Salonga very very close behind.
Ruthie to me is Fantine but Anne really made me feel her hope broken and dream turned to shame
I'm glad that there are some other people who enjoy Henshall's performance too. I always thought it was the best.
Rachelle Ann Go - now that was some emotion; whatta voice!
Anne Hathaway - she might not be the best, but DAMN, did she put the UMPH and emotion behind it *cries*
Ruthie Henshall - nailed it.
I’m not saying her performance wasn’t good, but she is not a good operatic singer.

Omg I don't agree with you, Anna it was AMAZING
I was not expecting to see Christina in this and had to pause for a minute bc I immediately started sobbing. It was such a bittersweet surprise 💚
I'm quite upset that nobody else recognises Ruthie Henshall as the best Fantine of all time 😔
Celinde is a very close second, though, and I've had the pleasure of seeing her perform Christine Daeé live in London, she was equally phenomenal then!
Because she's not the "best", She IS Fantine. She is the character. The only one who really feels the pain.
Benjamin Foster I DO!!
Ruthie is my favorite for this role!!!! Lea is fantastic in so many roles including eponine but Ruthie IS Fantine!!
I'll go for Lea and Ruthie, but you can't deny how powerful Anne's emotion in singing this song, not to mention the fact that she's crying. Its superb!
I really liked Idina and Lea, they sound great together.
It was too autotuned for me personally, and they were kind of just belting happily, which doesn't really fit the song. A little emotion is needed.
I liked it
It is pleasant to listen to and the one I have on my show tunes playlist.
I wouldn't classify it as the best, but it definitely earned a spot in this video.
It was a rule that Ryan Murphy only used autotune on songs that obviously had it already, like tik tok. No autotune was used on that song. Watch the glee project
@@hollisjo4023 they weren’t belting happily, the song wasn’t for fun on the show. it was supposed to show a mother and daughter longing for eachother
Lucky to have seen Ruthie Henshall in this role, sent a shover down my spine at the time, as did Philip Quast playing Javert!
I can feel the shame and her world tore apart when Ruthie sings it.
I like Ruthie, that raspy and trembley (is this a word? lol) was amazing, watch the whole performance, it was JUST AMAZING
Agreed!!!
Lea Salonga definitely sang it gorgeously, but nothing will ever top Anne’s performance. That woman has so much talent.
Lana Del Taco its a movie though so it is expected
Lana Del Taco please tell me you’re kidding whilst I applaud the acting but because she had to sing and can’t do it properly that’s where it falls flat for me
Michelle Flood thing is she chose to do it with more emotion as it fitted better which is way more preferable in my opinion
Sun ny loool wtf you on about, it was flat. You can be emotional whilst singing properly.
apeachonahill there was raw emotion in her voice. she’s not even a singer yet she delivered that scene so well.
God... Watching Christina Grimmie doing this in her bedroom, just for the love of music, brought the feels.
A recital or performance is neither superior or inferior to the other but the focus and intention of the singer is different, so I think it's best if you group all the ones singing the song outside of playing the character in one group, and those singing in character in another and then ask who did it better for each category.
heyjubes same with Patti LuPone, she was singing on a tv show i believe
Anne's version makes me cry.
I think its a song full of hurt but also with anger - that makes it soulful with no need of showy notes; that's giving justice to that beautiful song 🌿
As good as Anne was in this film, it was Eddie Redmayne’s Empty Chairs at Empty Tables that I could not forget when I saw it in theater.
Yes!!!! I full on lost it in the theater when Eddie sang that!
That scene was way better in my opinion (sorry Anne but I have a lot problems with your preformance.)
