Couldn't agree more. Minimalism has helped me focus on what's important and realise that sitting and taking time to read a book isn't a waste of time. I don't always need to be busy or doing some form of work. I'm most productive when I feel calm and have taken time for my relationships and hobbies.
I became a minimalist and now I also live that ”slow living” life. I have more time for the people and the activities I love. It doesn’t mean I don’t have goals or dreams I’m working on. Just means like Joshua said putting all of my energy in to specifik things. I really don’t care anymore what other people do with their lives or what they think of me. All I care about is that I’m happy and healthy 😊
I took i half of my life to understand that message, 30 years to get this, but now I am learning about it, because I'm still young to live life with less, and so much meaning, cheers from Brazil, you guys are amazing!
I had a nervous breakdown yesterday that had me leaving work early. I remembered your guys' words, and it's guiding me through some tough decisions, thank you!
Thanks so much. What a clear way to look at each day and not end it by feeling ashamed for not having hurdled enough milestones of futile, unintentional gestures. I LOVE to be focused on one thing!
I love this. When I overcommit, I spread myself so thin that I don’t excel at anything. When I commit to only a few things that I actually love, I do such thoughtful, thorough work that isn’t superficial or rushed just because I had to hurry and move on to the next thing.
Such a profound, simple message. Saying the word 'no' is especially powerful. If I can't give my time in a substantive, high level, I say 'no'. This has been life changing for me. Thank you so much for your exceptional content!
Fantastic! I strongly recommend Seneca's "On the Shortness of Life". The stoics knew what they were talking about and their teachings are fit for our times! The first topic of the book covers busyness and the waste of time, our most precious resource. Love it!
American culture has always placed "working hard, working more, and staying busy" as a religion. It is an unpardonable sin to admit you are lazy or loafing or doing nothing. Think about it. Where did that come from? ... It's all part of the idea of more, more, more is better. Thoreau mused "He who does not eat, need not work" ...Meaning if you don't want for stuff, then why work like a fool.
We Americans like to scoff at French for example prioritizing down time much more than we do... maybe I’m French at heart; I highly value my free time and rarely if ever feel a need to fill my schedule with careerist block-checking or even maximum socializing
I choose to live with intention and Focus, rather than persistent and deteriorating busy-ness. I’m so glad I’ve opened my life to understanding and deepening this concept, tweaking my life in ways that accommodate a better use of my time and attention.
Well said!! It took 3 cancer "adventures" to get to the place of not feeling guilty to just sit and relax. I was always so proud of being busy. Not taking vacations was a badge of honor. I've wondered if getting cancer 3 times came out of putting my body under the stress of being busy.
That sounded like a painful journey. A wonderful book to explore if you're interested: "When the Body Says No: The Hidden Cost of Stress" by Gabor Maté
Lots of food for thought. Thank you 🙏 I appreciate you bringing this to our awareness. If there’s one thing covid and retirement (which happened simultaneously) have taught me, is how much I’m enjoying doing less. I don’t want to go back to my previous life! But you bring up great points about focused, intentional projects.....and few of them at that! Yes!!!
When I saw this video it almost made me want to cry. I am so sick of of the hustle and bustle , go go,go, rat race of American life. I would have friends that would say I am too busy to exercise, had a ex boyfriend say I am too busy to cut a lemon to make lemon water so I buy already squeezed lemon juice. It comes with being an excuse to not take care of one’s self. I am sharing this to my Facebook.
We will change our culture one "No thank you" at a time. I am happier too since I focused on my vision and not some inefficient "career". I love my vocation, and I love The Minimalists. Thank you.
I agree with you, we're very busy, especially we can see real rat race in America, for example brokers in New York. But we can also see better life in France, because they practice slow living, they meet together, eat, drink, talk about life etc. But the problem is that if we don't work hard enough, we won't provide safe, health, food and shelter to our family, we have to work to make enough money to live, for example I want to practice slow living, but I have to work harder to grow my channel and my business on the side and retire earlier to have more peaceful life in the future. I want to eat healthy so I should go on a vegan diet, but vegan diet costs a lot of money so I have to make more money, it's endless circle, but we won't change this wicked world, full of evil, consumerism and addictions, we can only talk about it, I'm sorry that's the realities.
"This year i will accomplish only a few important creative milestones: write a book, produce a film, teach a writing class..." Hope i can have an "only a few" year like that. KEEP UP THE SUPER WORK JOSH - YOU'RE A BLESSING TO ME
And, for those of us with ADHD, multi-tasking and being "busy" can be torture, because it's almost impossible for us to do, yet that is what Western civilization expects...
When someone accuses me of being busy, I tell them they are a waste of space. Get busy living, or get busy dying. 😀I’m all seriousness, I love your perspective.
My 18 year old daughter would benefit from this message. She juggles so much and runs herself down, she is a perfectionist entering university and I'm worried she will burn out.
If she is interested at all, maybe watching something from Mel Robbins could help as well. Her book "Take control of your life" (but she also has videos on the topic) made me realize that perfectionism was my rather unhelpful coping mechanism for stress/anxiety. I can very much relate to your daughter, it took way too long for me to realize that perfectionism wasn't helping me at all, because it disguises itself as just being especially effective.
Unfortunately, I am always “BUSY”. Working full time, taking care of my grandmother with dementia until she can get into the nursing home, balancing a long distance relationship and volunteering my time with foster children. They are humbling things and I enjoy them..but my cup is always empty. I give and I give but I have nothing left for myself. Down time, rest or relaxation in my family is viewed as being lazy or not being able to handle daily tasks. I’m 26 and I’m often criticized because “my generation” can’t handle stress. All while battling anxiety and depression and trying to figure out my future. It’s difficult and you guys help me so much through applying certain tools to my life but not everyone understands my choices or lifestyle so I’m just viewed as weak.
Reciprocation of whatever it is that we give is important. Constantly giving from the void inside that doesn't get replenished as it should by *something* is a painful thing. I did it for many years. Responsibilities fall into a different area when it comes to giving and commitment. These things would often cause significant ruin of some type for multiple people if not given the full attention that they deserve. However, these things especially (responsibilities) can have some of the worst draining effects on us exactly because of the nature of what they are--probably even more so when family is involved. Doing the things that are necessary for yourself to recharge from all of the output isn't being lazy, or anything else that those critical of them might call them. At some point, you'll have to develop the confidence in yourself and your decisions to be able to simply ignore those things that aren't helpful to you and continue about your business. Everyone's life isn't the same, so trying to get to the place where you can find balance and peace is a journey that only you can complete. However, never forget that there are always people along the way to assist you when you need it. Never be afraid to accept the "weakness" within yourself and ask for help. None of us are superhuman. -Love
THIS one strikes me. There’s a flip side to every coin, and in American “hustle” culture, the act of resting and reflection is grossly undermined. Being restful and intentional with your life/actions is PRODUCTIVITY, just in a different way. What’s the use of working like a machine if you don’t take the time to recover, and enjoy the fruits of your labor?
Granted, I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm pretty sure the word "let's" should have an apostrophe in the title. Just a gentle suggestion haha. Love you guys, looking forward to viewing :)
I understand the message of the video but can we address the irony of scoffing at staring at a glowing screen when he puts out content for people to watch from that same glowing screen? I’m tired of shaming technology use. It’s our lifeline to family, friends, and often our work, which we need to do to support ourselves, and, as evidenced by this video, we all rely on those glowing screens in our current reality.
I don't believe Joshua is scoffing at the intentional and meaningful use of technology. Used this way, it can be a powerful tool for connection, productivity, etc. If we choose to spend some focused time watching a video from the Minimalists, that's very likely time well-spent. If on the other hand we watch another hour of hedgehog videos afterwards, that's likely time better spent focusing on creating, connecting, or whatever else is important to us.
@@bradgantt1818 sometimes we need a good series of hedgehog videos for our mental health, too :) I suppose I was seeking a more nuanced approach to using technology mindfully and felt this was more idealistic/general than I could practice. I respect your response; thank you for challenging my comment. I forgot I commented here but I kind of needed this reminder today.
@@kaitlin312 Ha! Yes. We need hedgehogs for sure. And I agree that this presentation wasn't particularly nuanced. More of a Scared Straight approach ;)
Being busy is a quick route to your own grave...ask yourself why are you busy, for what, most of the time we're busy for someone else. Busy equals zero, specially if the end result of it are not positive.

I’ve always been inclined to avoid busyness as much as possible. Many call it lazy, I like to think of it as efficient. 💜

Nice having you onboard.

I love all of the Joshua-isms and words I'm now incorporating daily.
I love to switch off completely - weekends phone on silent. No tv, no phone. A good book and a nice coffee at home.
