    One other option is to gut those battery packs and fit the gubbins inside the light and fit a DC barrel socket to charge it externally, making it a "sealed for life" job... :P

    FYI, so you don't have to struggle with the round shape of the base in the future, they make project adapters that are meant to be screwed to items, and accept batteries. AFAIK, they make them for just about every type of old and new battery on the market. The usual places like fleabay and others have listings for these things, worth a gander, i'd say, because it makes mating the parts together so much more easier. I bought a couple to make a few soldering station bases out of them for my 5v and 12v soldering irons and they're pretty well made, nothing's loose or cheap.

    Your lantern is a Damage Control light. If it is fiberglass it is relatively new. Not WWII vintage. Beautiful job with the new battery system. I would have never thought of that mod.

    Good stuff RK.
    Here's a suggestion. Pull the battery and put a volt meter on the bulb without any power connected and see if you get a reading. If you do, take it out at night when there is no light source and see if you can still get some voltage from the globe alone.
    My prediction is that you will get 0.2v in either conditions. cheers.

    What a great way to repurpose a good light!
    Did you ever consider putting the battery mount on the base, so that it sits on the battery? I thought that might give it better stability but it's too late for that now.

    If memory serves me well, there's actually two variants of the emergency battle lantern, one didn't have the handle on top, rather a bulkhead fitting and a cable. I don't recall what the purpose of those was, possibly for DC purposes, to maintain function until ship power dies out.

    You might have been able to completely recess it if you put it in the bottom of the light instead of the back. Withe the weight of the battery it would probably still be stable sitting on top of it. But it looks good the way it is and if it ain't broke don't fix it

    I have a couple of those lights. Nice idea. Some of the lights were mounted and were emergency lights, they would come on when the12 volt circuit to the light failed, they could also be easily removed for hand use. Some were just mounted to just be battery emergency lights to be removed and used. Great tough lights.

    This was a good video. Would love to see more of this kind of thing, though I guess it doesn't come up that often. Was that some filthy weather outside? It didn't ruin the audio so don't worry about that, but sounded like it was pouring down outside.

    Hey RK, I may be wrong but I thought that military spot lights and signal lights had fresnel lens to help direct the beam better.

    • @805ROADKING
      @805ROADKING  11 месяцев назад

      You might be right Carl, I'm sure the Military had different versions of this light!! All the ones I've seen on the ships were clear lens, mainly for lighting up the passageways when the lights went out!!☻

    Make a light funnel for it? Since you are not using it in open seas, you could target the light to your civilian use
