Colder weather is not the reason
It is not the winds of autumn that makes the leaves fall.
Trees have an inner clock triggered by the length of daylight.
Falling leaves helps trees survive the cold, dry air of winter.
Tiny holes in leaves cause the tree to lose water.
During the winter, there is less water to replace what the tree loses.
Veins carry fluids in and out of leaves; these close in the fall, anthocyanins
are produced, and the connecting tissues are sealed off.
The leaf is ready to fall.
