Well this is great opportunity for me to express gratitude and appreciation towards your work. I enjoyed so much (and still do) while watching your videos, and levels of professionality and research put into them are absolutely stellar. They have academic quality with bunch of citations, unexpected sources and clashing points of view - sense of scientific research, but also passion of animation lover in them. Some of my favourites videos from you channel are about: Everything related to early american animaiton; Gunbuster, Galactic train; Catnapped; Sherlockk Hound; Angel's egg; Interstella; Cagliostro; Train X and many, many more.. So as I said, thank you very much and I would really want you to enjoy making them as I enjoy watching them.
I just finished watching the ova series and it was awesome especially with the mix of Japanese folklore and dark fantasy. The story- blood, guts, body horror, and action got me pumped up especially with the soundtrack
Holy crap. I can't leave your channel. I got this under the "pink noise" labels at the local comic book store. Complete bootleg VHS copies, in black/white xerox covers. At the time, we didn't know the actual names of each title. Was simply called " pink noise" volume 1 2 or 3. That's all we could know to go by then. I loved the terminator rip off poster in "call me tonight" ( Thermilor 4!) I knew there was (at least) a second episode to Maryu Senki, as I seen it in either Newtype, or another magazine. But I never did know the name to it, other than "pink noise", so I never found it. Now I know the name, I can search for the second episode. Thx!
I watched this anime on VHS as a kid and it took me ages to find out the english name for it as an adult. Some excellent research went onto this, thanks!
Another great video. Thanks! Your channel is the perfect channel for old school 80's/90's anime fan like me. Love pretty much all the AIC ova catalog. I wish there was a company like Discotek to re-release those anime on blu-ray. Keep'em coming. 👍
This anime definitely reminds me so much of the Ninja Gaiden OVA (which I’ll hope you check out and enjoy). Likewise it never made it’s release overseas because I don’t know why, but the anime itself it pretty satisfying with some 80s ninja action violence and neo noir. Also Ryu Hayabusa slashing his enemies to pieces, now that’s badass!!!
"It's not that bad"... sounds like a solid "Eh, could be worse". Which was the 80s OVA scene; Too much budget concentrated in a solid thirty to ninety minutes. Plot? Plot, plot, plot... look, we have blood and breasts and those don't need plots, they need excuses. Some violent thing from the past will occur again and it's also thirsty? Let's la go!
I'd say there probably is more overlap than it seems, but the most vocal fans of anime on such as twitter are vastly more noticeable and some of those skew younger, and maybe horror is not their thing. I mean, I love both horror and anime and I know plenty others that do. Now, possibly age and generation is a factor to some degree too. There's horror about now, but say in the 80's there was a magnitude of more releases and more varied, than what gets in the mainstream now. Freddy and Jason were pop culture mascots. Now there's a lot more nuance than that, and I'm obviously greatly simplifying, but I'd say a chunk of the anime of the 80's and 90's probably was a bit more gory and intense too (and quite a bit influenced by sci fi and horror from the west as is obvious at times). So I guess what I'm saying is there's possibly a less obvious overlap of the two than in the past for it to be as noticeable. There is a very entertaining youtuber called spooky rice who is very much a person with both interests, who I recommend. As for you, you're bloody great. Keep up the great work, I enjoy it a lot.
With all the blood and violence on display in anime (especially through the 80s), how could you be a horror fan and not be an anime fan? Not to mention the rise of J-horror, manga picking up where EC comics left off, and the more brain warping anime stylings; horror fans have been picking through anime for a while now. I just endure ecchi to seem more cultured :)
The Gendo plot twist doesn't sound as bad as some others I've heard of, but if the story was meant to be different I can see it feeling like it came out of nowhere.
It’s funny because as a horror and anime fan, I actually have pretty high standards for quality. I get way too bored by low quality stuff. I just find a lot of the stuff that people call low quality in horror to actually be good. The biggest example is Friday the 13th The Final Chapter. But as far as beloved horror films that are low quality stuff like Night of the Demons and Motel Hell bore the shit out of me. I can’t think of a low quality horror movie I like except Plan 9 from Outer Space.
I wouldn't really consider Wicked City or Vampire Hunter D to be horror, though. They certainly have horror aesthetics, but by that logic, Urusei Yatsura could be considered horror because Lum is an oni.
I think a major reason that horror anime doesn't get over as much in USA is because horror relies alot on culture. A warped shinto shrine can be unsettling to a Japanese audience because it is familiar space twisted in a way that contradicts the audience's comfort. Similarly a decrepit church is just not going to have the same effect because the audience doesn't have a engrained sense of what is normal for that space. Also much of the horror exploits concepts of evil spirits etc...which differ radically from culture to culture. Without the context a lot of the frightening demonic transformations just come across with less impact. A person transforming into a Oni to the majority of Americans is about as impactful as a person transforming into a monsters Christian demon to average Japanese person. Without the cultural ties to those images and concepts the fear just isn't invoked. It's the same reason Christian imagery when utilized in anime is often done so to invoke an sense of alien weirdness and play on the human story telling trope that "magical stuff happens far away not here" it's why Aladdin is placed far away in the east which to the Persian author's would be somewhere in China, jinn do not manifest out of magic rings or lamps here in the mundane familiar local world but in far away lands magical things do happen.
I can answer your question. Because the Overlap between Anime and Horror may not be as strong as you might think it was in the 90s. Or even now. You show clips of Vampire hunter D and that is evidence of the disconnect. Dark Bloody and graphic makes a Horror NOT! You didn't show any Clips of Lilly C.a.t. for instance, and we all know how you feel about Wicked City. No one really talks about demon City Sinjuku. See the fact of the matter is, Horror anime DIDN'T pick up here. Nobody was going out of their way to watch anime that made them feel uncomfortable. That what Japanese horror IS. It isn't Less Nightmare on Elm Street and More the Thing! You keep bring up action, blood, action, blood. That doesn't not make something a horror. It is in that expectation that horror anime didn't quite make it here.
"Everybody's dead Dave" - I Understood that reference! I haven't thought about Red Dwarf in forever.

Thank You From The Bottom Of My Heart
All of that Castlevania music at the beginning just makes me want to play SOTN...thank you.
Also Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night music later.
Whenever you can, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
You do expect Maryuu Senki to be one of those series to have a hilarious dub that was meme'd somewhere but sadly we don't live in that world.
I have no doubt that would've propelled it to anime Halloween staple territory.
I just finished watching the ova series and it was awesome especially with the mix of Japanese folklore and dark fantasy. The story- blood, guts, body horror, and action got me pumped up especially with the soundtrack
aww yea, Ghost Toys Castle from the Mystical Ninja soundtrack

I'm a horror movie fan and an anime fan. Hello. One of my favorite movies ever is Carrie.
thanks
I enjoyed it! Sure it has some minor story problems here and there but over all I thought it was pretty good! Perfect anime to watch during Halloween!

The characters designs and visuals kinda remind me of legend of the overfiend
That should be the topic next haloween

Biker Monks From Mars!
Old school anime never dies.
Wait a minute... Miki, he is a Char!

Will you do Grave of the fireflies, as well as other Horror Animes? Like your channel so far. Also, I enjoy the Looney Tunes videos a lot.

Which dub of Vampir Hunter D do you watch?
Personally I prefer the Original over Sentai's anyday.
@@LowellLucasJr. yep me too sentais dub can fuck off
@@LowellLucasJr. All day every day.
OG over bloodlust as well.
Okay, horror genre slightly aside, why isn't there a horror comedy movie called Biker Monks? I'd pay money to see that, even if it sucks.
Its Urutsukidoji!...if it was Fushigi Yuugi. O_O
Can someone please tell me what songs were used for the amazing opening? 🧐
(And yes, I‘m a horror-fan that likes anime very much. 😄)
It's "I miss you (feat roman)" from Macross 82-99
@@AuroraOokami Thank you
Question. Will you finish Pink Noise ?
Or are we leaving that one episode out ? 😂
I do want to talk about Body Jack in the near future at least
@@KaiserBeamz I'll be waiting for it
I find that is hard to make horror in 2d, which is the main reason for not being much of an overlap between horror fans and anime fans.
Eh horror comics are hugely popular and they are 2D
Too scared

too bad didn't have a classical 90's english dub
