Testing the £1 Million Targa 46 in Rough Seas! 🌊

- What’s it like to drive the near 50ft flagship of the Targa range, the Targa 46? In this sea trial - the first on RUclips - Jack Haines gets behind the wheel to give you an in-depth driving review and walkthrough tour of one of the most capable 50ft leisure boats on the planet.
There are some products that define a genre and if you want a 50ft boat that will go through pretty much anything, Targa is the brand you turn to. But this isn't any Targa, this is the approximately £1,000,000 flagship of the range and if its smaller siblings are anything to go by, this could be one of the most capable boats of its size.
The boat is available with or without a flybridge, with sterndrives or IPS and with two or three cabins but the thing that all versions share is a laser-guided focus on practicality and usability. You won't see gimmicks here, this is a boat designed with purpose and that purpose is to be used day in, day out in whatever weather is thrown at it.
It faces stiff competition from some fellow Finns, however, so let's delve into the Targa 46 and see if it's as good on board as it appears to be on paper.
Let us know in the comments below whether you would prefer the Targa, the Sargo 45 of the Nord Star 49.

In Finland we have a saying that a Targa is never your first boat - it is your sixth or seventh boat.
Only when you’ve spent 15-20 years on boats you start to realize how good these things are and if you are fortunate enough to afford one, will you buy one for yourself. 👍🏻
That's great. You Finns know a thing or two about good boats - Jack
Mahtavasti sanottu, totta kaikki. Well said👍
It might be sixth but it's the last one
If I had the money it would be my first boat.
how would this stack up against dale nelson 40 or hardy boats..
The quietness was probably the most impressive thing. Low engine noise and absence of rattling is key for enjoying your time on the water.
Yes, so quiet I forgot to mention it! But you're right, it's a notable feature - Jack
However, I noticed a lot of hull slap during the tour when at anchor.
Does anyone else think we are in desperate need of a Nord Star 49 test and review?
Yes, me! - J
Yes, definetely
Yes, definetely
Yess
We really need it!
I see that motorboatists have a different perspective of what "rough seas" is than us sailors. Barely any swells there.
Brilliant motorboat though.
This particular guy have a different view of what rough seas are period, not just compared to sailors. As a Norwegian the conditions in this vid is way WAY better than we normally get here during winter. This would be considered rare and optimal and even summertime this would be very nice conditions on the coast.
Lovely boat but hardly a rough sea test .
May we see her on rough seas? I think that part was left out. I have seen swimming pools with more swell.
I was disappointed. Nothing worth mentioning
Truly worth the wait for this proper sea trail!
Nice to see more of the uniquely spec'd Targas shown to more people, as there is little talk about how customizable these vessels really are, in all aspects of the boat.
Would love to see the Sago in rough weather.
Nice boat and review, but I can't seem to find part 2 where you do the rough seas testing ?
Cheers
Thank you Jack for fulfilling your promise to sea trial this magnificent all weather Botnia Targa 46, it's a brilliant boat and one I've been lucky to have taken one to the channel Islands!
We got there in the end! Thanks must go to the owner for letting us use her and Wessex Marine for facilitating the test - Jack
When do we get to see the rough stuff? In my part of the world those conditions would only be slightly above flat calm 🤔
1 of my favourites, that and the Sargo 45...Another great review YachtBuyer 🙂
Many thanks! - Jack
Have fallen a bit in love with the sargo 45 explorer so if i had to choose between the two i would go for that one 🙂
Absolutely gorgeous boat, it's so appealing but the extra edge of practical layout on the Sargo just does it for me.
Awesome camera work Alex 👏👏👏, so enjoyable to watch these episodes and the drone work makes the vids spectacular.
Jack is sooooo comfortable talking boats while being filmed too, as always, well done team, thoroughly enjoyable, informative, entertaining and really helpful for the lotto daydream. 👏👏👏❤️🇬🇧
You're very kind CM, thank you. - Jack
This is just a fantastic boat. Holy crap! 🤩👊
Serious handler, low maintenance , practical and performance - great carefree vessel! Love it!
Awesome Jack. Loving this Targa and as others have said, the performance through the chop is comforting and a whole lot of fun! Top review all round!
Thanks Ben 👍 - Jack
Superb again. As a Finnish follower its great to see "our" boats in your show.
Still waiting for Nord Star 49😂😊
We'll do our best to test one!
Thanks - I am a bit surprised you call that weather "rough".
I was so pleased to see the headline, but .. 😞
It never looks as rough on camera and for the pieces to camera we tend to go to calmer areas to keep the camera steady - Jack
Regardless of size, from boats of this type I would always go for a Targa. I love the woodwork, the wibe they give over their competitors that admittedly, give very clever features.
Thanks Jack! Interesting vessel. Practicality and speed!
Thanks for watching!
Finnish boats are killing it, i would prefer the sargo 45
Fab review. I'd take the twin cabin T46 over the S45.
God I have waited a long time for this video. Thank you so much for finally making it, love the 46 so much. Awesome video guys
Glad you enjoyed it!
I actually was lucky enough to have a trip on this very T46 the day after you filmed. 30kts in a choppy sea and you couldn’t even feel it. We topped out at 40kts SOG, stunning boat.
I’d have this over almost any other boat
Even the Marex 440? 😉 - Jack
@@Yachtbuyernot been on a 440 yet, but did see one in build at the factory. Not sure it will compete with the sea keeping of a Targa, but it did look mighty impressive. You’ll have first look at Cannes soon. Looking forward to that review 😊
Congratulations on your new channel. You perform with a new freedom and humor that I really enjoy. It doesn’t look like work. The Targa and its finish work is more compelling on a screen. I’d love to see it and the Sargo at al boat show in Seattle. Thank you.
Thank you so much, that’s kind of you to say - Jack
What a lovely boat!
Outstanding job on the presentation and great camera work on this mini yacht. Beautiful layout on it as well.!!! Drives like a Cadillac.
Thanks Robert, appreciate that - Jack
Hey ! im following you for like 3-5 years . Thats very good and informing video . Best test video I ever watched till now ! im big fan of targa's btw . thx so much.
That's brilliant to hear, thanks so much for the kind words - Jack
I'd be hard pushed to decide between this and the Sargo. I have a feeling (based on nothing at all) that the Targa has the quality edge, but I do like the cabin layout of the 3-cabin Sargo. Sadly, I am unlikely to be called upon to choose for real any time soon.
Felicidades a todas y todos los tecnicos e ingenieros.Gran trabajo,resultado?,una gran embarcacion.Felicitaciones.
Love your reviews - so good and informative 👍😎
Thanks! - Jack
Wonderful tour and review Jack, thank you.
I loved the performance and handling!! It looks like so much fun to helm.
If I was buying one I’d ditch the flybridge as I think it ruins the looks, although a mini upper helm like smaller Targa’s would be cool.
Sargo or Targa…. I’d happily take either, but probably the Sargo, just.
Thanks Nic, glad you enjoyed the review - Jack
A good honest review of this brilliant boat 🙏
Cheers Nick! - Jack
My preference is for this over the Sargo by far. ALSO, I think I'd put solar on the back end of that fly--there's plenty of room w/o needing to put furniture back there. Thanks again Jack for your wonderful in-depth wisdom...and I gotta go see about some fur-lined Crocs too! :)
You won't regret the Crocs! - J
There's certainly space available for a lot of solar - both in panels and batteries/inverter/etc. I fantasize about live-aboard life, and this Targa has great live-aboard potential. I wonder how much space is freed up by going with outboards? Huge lazarette? Other possibilities?
You can’t get outboards on the 46 but yes, on smaller models you get an enormous lazarette where diesels engine(s) would normally go - Jack
@Jack Haines one of your best reviews.
Targa reminds me of the old Mercedes G glass, tough as nails but more sophisticated than anything else on the market.
Their woodwork, attention to detail (no rattles etc.) is second to none in my humble opinion. Secondarily, Targa really goes the extra mile to ensure that everything they make is mechanically accessible. This is not always the case with other brands and regardless of whether you work on your own boat or have someone else do it, having things easy to access means alot of saved $$$$$.
Finally, I would add the people at Targa, are SUPER responsive to any needs you may have, top notch company.
Thank you! - Jack
On the 1st 8 minutes of this "sea trial"? the presenter is "wiggle wagging" the Targa in relatively flat water with an occasional move through shallow swells. I could run my 16 ft Whaler Montauk in similar water at near similar speed. I would like to see how this over priced boat performs in 3-5 ft wind driven chop or stand up wave conditions. I
The best size, best interior and exterior design ever, you are creative 👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you made it home safely.
Some serious sounds in the owners cabin at anchor, I couldn't sleep with that
Seems like a real bargain! 👏👍😀
@yachtbuyer. Great review. one thing folks never talk about is the COG (Center of Gravity) Targas have up to 65% of their weight below the waterline, that is the magic!!!!
Yes, good point!
Excellent video! Congrats to you and your team for a fantastic job presenting this beautiful boat.
To answer your question, I prefer the Sargo 45 because the owner’s cabin is brighter, it has a seating area at the bow and the overall feel is more modern. I was told that Sargo are working on a flybridge option now so I’m looking forward to that before making the final purchase decision.
Our pleasure! 👍
The Sargo has an airdraft of 3.4m to the radar arch, making it difficult to stay below 3.5m (which is necessary if you also want to use European inland waterways). The Targa 46 has an airdraft of 3.19, which is not ideal either, but you could use it to construct something that offers space for the instruments.
*if my numbers are correct
I am loving this targa more than anything else I’ve seen on utube 2,120,000 in aud . Could you imagine the Capricorn coast on this vessel. I’m won!
Love it and it would be a hard choice but if the sargo 45 was available in a flybridge version it would just edge it for me
Lovely boat 👍
Amazing, sea trials taking it into another level. Boat is nice too.
Thanks!
I love your REAL reviews... the good and the bad. i wonder if you can get the stern drives, and a transformer to make up for the lack of a hi-low swim platform. might have to add a hydraulics pack?
💙 If I may, I would change the furniture to Chesterfield, and I agree with Ketchup, Landrover and Targa 🥰
You may 😊 - Jack
Looks so much better than all those ghastly sunseeker / fairline products. And highly capable and versatile too.
a stunning piece of machienery for me on the andaman sea... wish we could buy those
Just imagine if this boat had the flybridge set-up of the sunseeker 65 sport.
Wonder if I could convince Botnia to do something like that 😁
Might be the most phenomenal boating experience you could ever get on a boat in a sunny day!
Amazing as it is, what's even more amazing is that the ocean on which it floats... is flat AF!
It never looks as rough on camera... - Jack
Ooooooo This or the Sargo? Who's paying. If you're paying I'll be happy with either. There are other boats sort of like the Hardys that are sort of like this. If I was spending my own money I think I'd get the Targa. I like the cabin layout better.
Those conditions are not rough.
Too bad we can’t get your preference, Jack, but I’m going with this one! Both are packing 10 lbs of ship in a 5 lb hull, but the fly bridge seals it for me. This would be a great boat for the Great Lakes(freshwater oceans!) Not sure if they are available in Michigan or not but they should be! Job done, brother 👍
Luckily they are! we, East Coast Yacht Sales, are the proud dealers for the east coast of the USA
I think actually the Sargo 45
I am considering purchasing the Sargo45. Both ships seem functionally equivalent, which one would you recommend?
What do you mean rough seas? Those were amazingly calm.
because I see Sargo 45 Targa 46 Nordstar 49 scy as the same class, I wonder which one is better.👍
Always love a targa but, for a £m, £18k if you hit a pot with IPS and 120L/Hr id be buying a used Nordhavn…
Used nordhavn absolutely will cruise around the world high seas all day
Amazing boat. Wonderful video. Well done lads
Glad you enjoyed it
please review nordStar 49 scy Thank you for the video 🙏
Does anyone else find TVs on a boat depressing? Go to Sea to get away from TV
Blimey! Nice one Jack, though I'm becoming more and more convinced that you NEEEEED, not want, NEEEEED an F1 powerboat for Xmas? Top notch presentation as per usual and hat-doffing/forelock-pulling (yikes) to you and the team. See you next time
Thank you! - J
Definitely the 45. More élégant
Epic!
I am afraid for me it will always be a Notnia 46. Not that I am complaining though..... beautiful stunning boat. My favorite brand
Time to put you on the spot Jack. Sargo 45 or Botnia Targa 46 for you? Me personally has to be the Sargo 45
cool and beautiful !
Thanks for the extensive and very interesting review. To answer your question in the end, I would say a Sargo 45 with a flybridge would be a perfect combination. Adds space and flexibility. Do you know if this is in the cards for Sargo? Thanks
Thanks for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the review. I’m not aware of a flybridge version being worked on but it wouldn’t surprise me if they are developing one! - Jack
Yes, Sargo is working on a flybridge version of the Sargo 45.
Brilliant review and presentation 👍👋Difficult choice between two great boats, Targa 46 and Sargo 45. Would welcome a review of Nord Star 49 to complete the three contenders. Nord Star 49 however, doesn't have standup height at helm, it seems, and that is a full stop for me 🙁
A few observations though: Missing flybridge on Sargo 45. Strong points of Targa is woodwork (eg. the tables are higher quality), the Sargo 45 only have a top loading washing machine, Targa 46 a fullsize standard european front loader located with the aft cabin(that you forgot to mention 🙂, and Sargo 45 have a too low working position in the galley of sink and burners). Great sliding door hatch/locker on Sargo 45, with locked possibility for ventilation only (maybe Targa can do something similar?). Points for the extended hardtop roof behind the radar arc on Targa 46 and it's ability to fully enclosure the aft cockpit - weather is often more rain and windy than nice in Northern Europe 🙂
Great comment, thanks for taking the time to post it!
Targa is better than Sargo because of the flybridge. It would be ideal if the Targa had a Davit to lift the Tender onto the upper deck ❤🧡💛
That is an option on the Targa, I should have mentioned it - Jack
@@Yachtbuyer ⚓❤⚓🧡⚓💛⚓
Sargo are working on a flybridge option for their 45. I don’t know when they’ll present it though.
Jack, how does this stack up against a Dale 40?
Have you tried the ”single lever” option from VP? It is very comfortable to drive with it.
I have, it's a handy feature 👍 - Jack
I'm nowhere close to being able to afford this. But if I would order one and then learn that Sargo announced production a larger model including a flybridge then the current 45..... I would wonder if I made the wright purchase.
I would not go for either. Instead I would go for the Dale 40 - a tougher and more rugged boat, that oozes class.
Targa always👍
THIS is my DREAMBOAT🥰🥰🥰
Very nice boat!
The overhang over the aft deck looks awkward though. Not something I would spec. Would go for a motorized canvas solution instead.. it is cool with all the possible styling options and choices available. I kind of understand this owners vision. Although I would make other choices personally
TY. Sargo 45 just pips this by having a better cabin layout (imho).
great test well done Australia if i winn lotto i would buy one great boat
Love
unbelievable how agile that looked
It's quite something! - J
@JackHaines @yachtbuyer when are you going to review the newer Targa 32. I believe your last review of the Targa 32 was over 10 years ago?
You won’t be waiting long… 😉
Take it to Miami and show the Haulover queens how it should be done
Such a good idea!
looks more like a glassoff than a chop
the best boat reviewer 👍 keep up the good work been watching since i was like 10
That’s amazing to hear, thank you! - Jack
Targa for sure
Very good information.
Glad it was helpful!
Targa 👍
Dreaming 😁
Rough sea? Haven't seen here. Title is misleading.
What was the swell height during the sea trail please ?
1.5m-2.5m
I'd choose neither. I prefer the Marex.
How do you think this boat compares to the Nordstrar 49+?
I haven't tested the 49 so hard to day, hopefully something we can organise soon! - Jack
Самый лучший обзор Targa 46. Динамичные кадры в движение. Работа оператора супер. Звук отличный мы слышим ветер когда летим над водой. Супер!
This or the sargo 45 in your opinion? Do you think they’re better with sterndrive or ips for an unexperienced driver?
The IPS, with trim assist, is so easy to drive at speed and around the marina that I would recommend that for an inexperienced driver. - Jack
