At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I love a good uni knot but I noticed it would snag a little in my casts. So I've went to an Alberto knot it's not hard and it looks very similar to an fg when finished. I usually do 2 overhand knots after the Alberto on both mainline and flouro. It doesn't seem to snag in my casts.

@@MattStefanFishing I should add Im using flouro or mono not braid. When I fly fished alot I had to learn a nail knot and blood knot and all that but for line to bait I always use an improved clinch and if it needs a loop knot deal I just use a snap lock. 😂

Alberto for braid to fluoro....just as easy as uni-uni and just as thin as FG. I always use 20+ lb fluoro leader to prevent pike biteoffs, they're everywhere in my lakes. Trilene for all direct ties...not sure why you said trilene doesnt loop through hook twice bec it does the way i do it and see it everywhere 🤷‍♂️

Great info. I came across the Miller Knot in a video that talked about tuna fishermen using it on light line for those fish 5-7 years ago. Been using it ever since.
For really light floro (4-8) I add another loop. 3x thru eye. It never breaks. Don’t know if it makes that much difference, but I have confidence in it.

I'll check out the Miller knot! Thanks. I use the Double Pitzen knot for flouro, Palomar for braid, and the Alberto knot for braid to flouro. I'll use the double uni for mono to braid for backing.

Great video!!! Just started using the Miller Knot when I seen it on your video. I like it a lot so far no problems with it!!! Like tying the Red Phillips Knot for braid to fluoro or mono use to use the uni knot. Good luck in the tournament can't wait to see the action on the water with the boys. Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍

I use 3 knots for everything. A loop knot for lures and jigs, a standard Trilene knot (I think that's the name) and to tie braid to mono I use a "modified Albright". I really don't want the strongest knot for leader to line. I want my drag to slip before the knot breaks. So if I get snagged, which is daily, I want the knot to fail so I don't lose braid. I have caught plenty of big saltwater fish that run a lot with those knots. Catching a stingray about 30-40 lbs on 10 lb braid takes 20 minutes or more and my knots were fine. That's the biggest stuff I've caught with braid so far.
I have a spool of 6 lb braid coming tomorrow. I'll put it on my 7 medium light rod for trout and flounder and redfish, I'm curious to see how much farther it casts than the 10 lb braid.

Agree to tie what you have confidence in. Started using the Miller for nearly all terminal tackle with exception of punching where I use a snell with a straight shank hook to get an upward trajectory during the hookset. Saw the snell for punching on one of Gabe Montgomery's videos. Found that either the Miller or snell works with all line types and only had the Miller break once in two years. Thanks to you and Mark Daniels Jr. for the Miller heads-up. Attaching a link to Joe Miller's video on his knot. Tried the FG knot and just can't get it right. Tried alternatives and finally decided on an alberto for braid to leader. Also been using an "other" knot vs a palomar for drop shotting (video link attached). Don't think it has a name but works well and doesn't require the knot to be pulled back through the hook eye like the palomar.

Hi Matt, I agree to find a consistent knot you can do perfect every time. I have made the uni my almost everything knot. I do a double or super uni straight to baits, uni to uni for braid to flouro. I even use a uni technique for my snell knots. Some of my friends have a hard time with the uni. Credit Roland Martin for getting me going on the uni 10 years ago. Got back into fishing later in life and so happy I did. Love your stuff. I'm in New England and your content helps me the most.

I've got 5 go-tos and that's it. They're all pretty specific. FG for leader knots, power snell for large hooks, rapala loop for most swimming lure connections, Palomar, and fish-n-fool for most everything else.

Double San Diego Jam knot, about the strongest knot you can tie. The double SDJ knot has 2 loops through the eye, it's a fast tying knot and strong. If you need something lighter just go with the single San Diego Jam knot. For tying leader to braid its all FG knots for that. Here is a tip on making the FG knot easy peasy unless you wearing pants with no belt loop, but I tie the braid to my belt loop and have the rod hang with tension and then that leaves my hand free with the fluoro and do the wraps. When done with the wraps pull on the single knot on your belt loop free and finish with half hitches, takes 2-3min to tie, in the boat, at home where ever...:)

Matt, Salt Strong has several videos on the FG knot. You may want to look at the version where the braid tag end wraps around your little finger. It looks like the easiest way if you could master it. My fingers don't work that well anymore, so I use the braid tag end in my mouth version. I can tie it in under 90 seconds. I took your advice on the Miller knot, and use it as my primary knot.

Matt- the last time you brought up the Miller, I told you I have been tying it for over 40 yrs. I wish I had said then... My Wife started really fishing with me about 4 years ago. I spent most of my time making sure she had tackle on. When she wanted to learn to tie on her own hooks, etc. I taught her the Miller Knot and she picked right up on it and within just a few trips, she could tie on all her own tackle. The Miller knot in my world is the easiest knot and on of the strongest. Thank you for this video!

I watch the channel a lot, and I have learned a lot. I live in Michigan so I can relate to the tips from a fellow northern angler more than most of the RUclips fare.
I do want to add my two cents in favor of the FG knot however. It isn't easy to tie at first, but once I got confident tieing it I will not go back to anything else. On spinning rods or baitcasters I can use any length fluorocarbon leader, often 18-20 feet. Reel the knot into the reel no problem. And once you get the confidence tieing a good knot, they never fail.

I now tie the Miller knot. I think that it is very strong,& reliable.
Years ago I would tie a Palomar knot. Shew, too many spinnerbaits lost because of a knot that breaks too easy.

I’ve only ever broken off at my knot a handful of times no matter the knot. Most of those times were pulling on a snagged lure or hook. The fish I’ve had break me off wrapped my line around something and the knot would have made no difference there.
I agree 100%. Learn a few knots and get to the point you can tie them in your sleep.

I'm not Matt and I have no where near his skill, but tecently I have been doing experiments with different lines and knots and a force gauge. I discovered that with the Palomar knot I have to be very careful that the lines are not crossed through the eye. If they are crossed there, the knot is quite weak. Also, it's sometimes difficult to get it to cinch down without damaging the line.
With the Miller knot there are many fewer errors to make. It cinches down more easily, Make sure the figure 8 cinches somewhat first. Then check the two loops through the eye to make sure they don't cross or have twist. Also you have to make sure and pull the tag end. After that you golden.
Also Miller has shorter tag than Palomar and doesn't require putting the bait through a loop.

For mono or fluoro to braid the GT knot tested the strongest of all the knots. FG knot was not very strong.

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 День назад

I use a modified Albright knot for braid to mono and I don't want the knot to be stronger. I fish in the saltwater and I use jigs mostly. I snag the bottom a lot and have to break off. I want the line to break at the knot so I don't lose braid. And that knot hasn't failed while I was fighting a fish because the drag slips before the knot fails. I used the same knot when I was using monofilament on my reels but I had to start wrapping it from up to down then back up, and through the loop twice. That stops the braid from slipping in the mono loop. Works for me.
