My grandmother is from Alton, she went to high school with Wadlow. She said he towered over everybody, she also told me my grandfather would drive him around in his car. I wish I had a pic of that.
I've seen Robert in Ripleys and guiness as you said but never have seen his hometown. I learned a lot more about him. Those caves were very cool! Great time to have the drone.
They should of made a movie based on Robert Wadlow's life. That picture of him in that school desk was just so sad. Couldn't they have just let him sit at a small table? Great video Jacob as always. This one left me wanting more on Wadlow. So sad his life was short and so much suffering though. Hoping there were good times in between.
Wow Jacob this was great! My dad was born in Alton in 1932. He loved to tell us the story of when he met Robert Wadlow when he was a boy. Told us he was at eye level with Roberts belt buckle. If you ever go back visit Cahokia mounds. Dad loved that place, it's not far from there.
Doug, I think Jacob should have a meet up in Alton! I live in Collinsville, and it would be cool to have Jacob, Mrs. Carpetbagger and Anna, to come here for Halloween and the ghost tours as well as have Mrs. Carpetbagger do a live vlog and tell ghost stories or what they experienced on the Haunted Tours. I am surprised he did not show the Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas Statue. Maybe there are other vlogs he recorded for tomorrow.
I grew up near Alton Illinois and my mother went to school with Robert Wadlow. She told me that he was never treated like a freak or anything disrespectful in Alton. He was very kind and well-respected in the community.
What a fantastic video. It's wonderful to see the town embracing a gentle giant like Wadlow. He's been in so many TCB videos in one form or another that he's kind of a recurring character so it was lovely to see something that took the time to tell his story a bit more.
Thank You, Jacob, for visiting my area. It was a great vlog. You could have swung around on Highway 270 to Collinsville, IL my hometown. They have a Historical Museum about the Ketchup Bottle there too. Maybe next time. Thanks again.
Robert got the infection in his foot while walking through a parade in my hometown of Manistee Michigan. It is called the national forest festival. Festival continues to this day. There is also one of his shoes on display at Snyder’s shoe store located in Manistee and also one in ludington Michigan.
i live in alton, where wadlow was born and raised. i will forever remember that he was the tallest man. i’m so sorry he died at suck a young age. also, the tour guide you had, goes to my church, and he’s quite sweet.
I was at the unveiling of the Wadlow statue. I went to school just down the street and in the 4th grade we sang for the then governor who came for the unveiling.
Hey Carpetbagger! I live in Alton! So happy to see you check out our awesome town and the statue of our gentle giant. Love your videos! Thank you for visiting!
RhettyforFun Yep! They started us young with the story and had us do art projects with everyone’s interpretations of the Piasa Bird. It’s even the mascot in a nearby town.
I’ve been to Alton, it’s a really spooky town. Went to the Mcpike Mansion which was great. It’s a beautiful drive on the outer part of town around the river in the Fall
Wow that looks like a really cool museum. Im from Delaware and we don't have anything really cool like that in our state. Half the US doesn't even know Delaware is a state
Geez, that chair is so big you could almost stretch out and sleep on just the seat cushion! 😮 He'd have to CRAWL to get around in that house... literally... Whoa... made me nervous when you started to fly Possum 2 into the cave... I kept thinking if you go too deep in there and lose signal contact with it that could be a problem... 😧
I've read his story in both Frederick Drimmer's *Very Special People* and Paradox Press' *The Big Book Of Freaks* .I've only been to two Ripleys',but they both had statues of him.
We're also one of the most hunted towns as well. T.A.Ps came here a couple of years ago and did a paranormal investigation on one of the old schools here. They got a lot of activity.
Robert Wadlow must be very famous, come across him in many vlogs. He died at a young age and that is sad. Strange that his birth house is so neglected. The fantasy goes crazy.
I just subscribed and got two notifications of your videos and man I wish I would have discovered you a long time ago cuz I really enjoy the content that you put out thank you so very much and have a blessed day and safe travels
A very cool vlog ! I need to go to Alton to check out the Wadlow stuff. The Hotel Metropolitan in Paducah has an exhibit on the quilt patterns signs for underground railroad. Some interesting stuff the "National Quit Museum" doesn't have an exhibit on.
the upside to his early death is he will always be remembered and always be special. how many people can say they are idolized in every ripleys and have a statue of themself in their hometown?
So interesting thank you. Robert Wadlow was an extraordinary human being not just for his height but for his wonderful spirit. I'm sad he went so young. Another great man who left us too young was my favourite actor Alan Ladd. Is there any chance you could do a story on him and his homes especially his ranch Alsulana and Palm Springs where I believe you can vacation now which was where he sadly left us. He is very underrated sometimes and was loved by so many people. He was extraordinarily handsome and charismatic but was also a very loyal and generous man who was an Olympic standard diver and swimmer who gave it up due to injury. He could also sing as well if not better than Crosby. I've seen Jordan the Lion show us is hamburger store bur sadly it was closed that day in N Hollywood. I'd love a story on him by you and a tour of his homes if possible.
for some cool traveling ideas and similar folk lore you should read some of troy taylors books. he used to have his own shop in alton but you can get them anywhere. i have several of his including "weird illinois"
Very interesting. Life must have been a real struggle for him as shown in the school pic. Did not realize he was so young when he died. Love learning about new stuff that bird is scary. Great drone shots. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well ❤
My hometown!!! I loved it, Jacob! But Alton is chock full of history and interesting things. But I understand you weren't making a whole documentary. lol
Very interesting. I love to watch your videos. They take me to a place I will probably I will never go. I would love to see a tour of Abe Lincoln’s home and museum
Mr. Waldlow 272 cm isn't the tallest even in modern history, but the tallest is Mr. Theodore Makhnov 283 cm from a village in what's called today Belarus, he lived nearly 20 years before Wadlow was born.
Glad you got to visit the Alton Giant and learn about The Piasa Bird. I made videos about both of these recently, too. Check them out sometime and let me know what you think
I looked on GooglEarth and even Roberts shadow is huge from space. I can't imagine living day-to-day dealing with all these size challenges. Ok, so is it me or does there seem to be evidence of the Piasa Bird cave ceiling collapsing slowly? And there are houses on it!?! The shows how much of our own country we don't know about. PS-I'm hoping you've been to the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge? It always looked a bit hokey when ever we drove by, Then we asked around and went in based on recommendations. No Cameras! (except for movie costumes). AAA and Trip Advisor agree, it's an amazing and overwhelming museum that gives perspective I never considered. Nice video, safe travels.
Flyboy. It is actually pretty stable. There have been many people die who ignorantly jumped from the top, but the fenced in area around the cave entrance was to number one keep people out but they are currently building a museum and historical site that will be inside that cave. Maybe Jacob just did not know that. He did a great vlog on this though. Look up the history on the Piasa Bird. It is pretty cool. The one with the green body was the ones the Indians described and was originally painted on the cliff side as you see on the website. It was pretty scary as a kid to see it, but like Jacob said in 1999 they repainted it and it is a gold colored body. www.piasabirds.com/piasalegend.html
Museum in the Cave -brilliant. The scenario seems to play out in history, not only locally, but worldwide. David vs. Goliath. I think of Ezikeil and the wheel or Native Americans Kokopelli. Certainly Dragons are popular lore. If you've ever watched Northern Exposure, Elaine Miles who plays Marilyn Whirlwind, a native Alaskan who weaves her native stories into the show. Thanks for the Piasa bird link.
So cool 😎 .. sad how we come and go ... to think he use to walk around that same area back then it’s what makes I’d so sad ...life is crazy 😝 ive seen everything on him ..he was a good person his whole 22 yrs .. did the guy say he was a mason ? Guess that’s probably the only thing he wrong in his life but guess he wouldn’t kno no better at that age R.I.P ROBERT 🙏🏽🙏🏽 ... and the house on top of those caves is super nice ...who ever lives there has one the best views and living on top of some super history .. 💪🏽
My grandmother is from Alton, she went to high school with Wadlow. She said he towered over everybody, she also told me my grandfather would drive him around in his car. I wish I had a pic of that.

Judy Osborne agreed
When my Dad was a kid Mr. Wadlow sold he and my grandparents some shoes! In St Louis I believe!

Alton does have one of the oldest Halloween parade in the U.S.

I enjoyed learning about the Piasa Bird! very cool 11:20 very cool

A giant, a dragon, and a jazz legend. My home town :)

Je suis un des plus grand fan de mr Robert pershing wadlow depuis années 1986 je n'avais que 13ans
I remember going to that museum for field trips when I was in grade school
I like this informative and sensitive factoid on Robert Wadlow. Just barely an adult when he died, but such a great example of human potential.
My grandma was actually got friends with Robert. I have a photo as well for prof
let me see it then molly
I’ve loved the last couple videos. I live in Hannibal and was born in Alton. It is neat to see your town through the eye of another.

Great vlog Jacob, one of your best.
I just asked you about this on the Live stream ...so I had to come look it up ... Love your videos
All kinds of touristy goodness in this video! Those caves looked amazing, too bad they didn’t have tours.

If you didn't know Illionis and Missouri has lots of caves and yes the underground railroad went through there to freedom
That sounds like the first installment of a Robert Wadlow-based series of Potteresque adventure novels.

Excellent. Way better experience than Ripley's.
