I think Shohei is the victim here. There should be a forensic audit done on his account over the entirety of their relationship ship. I doubt this bookie was the only one getting money from that account. If he did it there, there's a good possibility that it was done elsewhere too.
Some are trying to evaluate Ohtani's actions and values with western values. It is too ridiculous. And there are too many people who probably didn't watch the press conference.
Then he needs to stop taking advantage of American institutions and American money
@@whitewindbluehandit’s not called taking advantage if they are willing to pay, tf you smoking lol. Supplies and demands…easy as that haha. Thats how the world works
@@whitewindbluehandyou’re missing the point 😂
Do you believe the story Ippei told?
A symptom of gambling addiction is repeating lies.😂
Ohtani is the 100% victim,
Those who know his upbringing and personality know that he is an honest person.
Yeah ok … jump to conclusions when the guy still hasn’t sent ippei to the authorities. Lots not adding up. If 4.5 mill is gone ippei wouldn’t currently this second be in a cell. But why not it’s been already a week.
@@jerz7657agreed. Why hasn’t this guy been charged yet for “stealing” 4.5 million lol
@@jerz7657 Ippei lied about going to a University, took casino dealing classes, doesn't actually interpret Japanese but uses slang according to professional Japanese translators. You don't need a tin hat but it's pretty obvious, he's been duping Shohei since he was 19 years old.
@@jerz7657how is Ohtani supposed to "send him to the authorities"? The authorities do the arresting. People also cant seem to grasp that an interpreter who arranged nearly all his engagements where he would speak was able to arrange a press conference when HE (the interpreter) was contacted avout making a statement concerning the situation HE (the interpreter) had be lying to Ohtani about . The bookie likely helped/provided protips Ippei arrange all of it.
another fake Japanese account lol
So we are just gonna believe a statement from a proven liar (Ippei) over someone (Shohei) who has never lied in the public eye before?? Come on, lets give Shohei the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.
Otani is already richer than you can imagine. He has been featured in commercials for many of Japan's largest companies. You can see it when you come to Japan and watch Japanese TV.
Book Maker knew that Ippei Mizuhara was the best friend of Shohei Otani.
Ippei Mizuhara was not only Otani's interpreter, but also his only manager, and was apparently responsible for transferring expenses and other important tasks during Otani's hospitalization.
ブックメーカーは、水原一平が大谷翔平の親友と知っていた。
水原一平は、通訳だけではなく、大谷さんのただ一人のマネージャーとして、経費の振り込み等、その他の重要な仕事を大谷の入院中にも担っていたとか。
I hear some people are making it sound like what Ippei did stealing money from Shohei is a shock. People got to understand it happens all the time. It happened in my bussiness were an employer whose also manager took out money from the campany to use on his expense. Here's some of the clients and associates that robbed and stole money from athletes and celebrities - Tim Duncan was robbed $20 million dollars, John Elway lost $15 million, Kareem Abul Jabbar lost $9 million, Kevin Garnett lost $78 million, Usain Bolt lost $12 million, Robert DeNiro lost $88 million dollars, Elton John lost $29 million, Billy Joel $90 million ect......All by clients, associates and even close partners.
Why would his interpreter have free access to Millions and Millions of Dollars??? That makes no sense,.
I could see a business manager or an accountant or financial manager or something like that but a Freaking Interpreter???? Who gives an interpreter free rein to their money? That makes ZERO Sense?
Maybe he was hypnotized or something odd... I would love to find out how the interpreter got access to all that money!
@@MikeKollin Because who knows Japanese all that well? So he read his mail, emails, contacts, bank account, payments. Once on a PC you can find passwords of others if you have access to their property. Ohanti trusted him with most everything. Then when Ohtanis back was turned or even from another device and passwords, faked documents it was a long plan to dupe him out of millions. I hope this is what it turned out to be and not Ohtani betting or just paying the guys debts off.
@@MikeKollin😂 are you really asking how criminals get access to things? Are you asking for personal research?
I'm a Japanese.
Do you know all the procedures the wealthy have? Or do you know all the methods criminals use? Do you know all the financial transactions?
Honestly, there are so many know-it-alls out there it's annoying!
Yup a-lot of know it alls out here except Ohtani apparently. He didn't know nuffin!
@@MeToo-py1tq Put your hand on your heart and think about it. Everyone has at least one person they can trust with their life, right? Thinking hypocritically won't get you any closer to the truth.
I, like a lot of people, initially felt that Ippei was being made a very convenient fall guy. It definitely smacked of that when the story broke. However, having watched this press conference, I now think Shohei was a victim. The statement wasn't PR polished, and he showed very rare emotion (by comparison to his normal public persona). Sucks for him, and unfortunately it's far too common for young athletes. They put their trust in the wrong people and don't know until it's too late.
after 6 years with a tutor and No English, I hope he did not really pay him 1.2 million to learn nothing. he could have gone to Havard for less and received his master's. he is not as dumb as you think he is. I do not think I have ever seen a ball player keep someone around for 6 years and not be able to learn English. they both are gambling junkies, and it will come out. 🤥
@@michaelwilliams409 First, I don't think he's dumb or lacking intelligence. Being naive or unaware isn't the same thing. Second, Ippei was his translator, not his tutor, and he was much more than that. He was his personal assistant and more or less handled all of Ohtani's affairs so he could focus on baseball. That's not an uncommon thing when it comes to celebrities and athletes. They have huge demands on their time.
Ohtani does speak and understand English pretty well, but smartly doesn't want to engage with media in a second language. Given the way the media works, taking things out of context, creating drama, can you blame him?
Finally, although I hope not, you may be right. None of us know for certain what happened. However, if you're correct that he's a major gambling addict and has been for years, it'll take little effort for authorities to uncover the truth. He's playing with fire if he flat out lied about everything while publicly accusing another of criminal activity. We'll see soon enough.
@@michaelwilliams409 Everything that @ktbeatty just said.
Let me start by saying that I am a J-->E translator with about 40 years of professional experience. I translate writing. Doing simultaneous (or at least quick) translation of quick-fire conversation on virtually any topic ... thats a tough job. TO be honest I didnt think Ippei was THAT good - he was adept at using American jargon and turn of phrase to translate some of Ohtani's quips. But he often tossed in a lot of his own "context", and left out context that SHohei probably would have wanted left in.
But that didnt matter because Ippei was far more than just a translator. He did EVERYTHING for Ohtani, from opening bank accounts and communicating with reporters/ other players/ charities/ sponsors, to buying his groceries. NHK, Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun and a dozen other main media outlets confirmed FOUR DAYS AGO that Ippei had been given Power of Attorney over a US$10 million account that Shohei used for charities, and rarely looked at. Tell me -- if the Japanese press had no problem contacting the bank in question and finding out who held Power of Attorney ... why is ESPN (or should I say BSPN) unable to do the same?
They ran with a story based on one interview with a proven liar and addicted gambler. They didnt even ask Shohei for comment before running it.
SHAME!
FWIW, Japanese baseball players tend to be very introverted and socially cautious people as a group. And for good reason. If you think being misquoted in the USA is problematic, you have literally no idea. . . . In fact, in Japan, nearly all pro sports teams have "press orientation" for rookies where they spend two weeks doing nothing else but learning how to say nothing ... in a very diplomatic and friendly manner. Guys like Tsuyoshi Shinjo - who actually ad-libs and says what he thinks, rather than repeating pre-scripted lines - are one in a million.
This is why nearly all players in MLB use translators.
It isnt about English ability. Its about making absolutely, 100% certain that nothing is lost in translation ... or if it is, that the translator can be blamed for it.

There is no reason for Ohtani to fabricate a much bigger crime when he could get away with it by paying a fine assuming he didn’t bet on baseball
Unless he bet on baseball. If he did then he has all the motivation to cover up.
@@bobbyw1074 that would be the only reason for him lie but they haven’t found any evidence that a bet was placed on baseball…
@@kenm2242 another reason to lie is he is also betting through an illegal bookie in California. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things Tbh I think his lawyers overplayed this. Should have just went with ippei’s first story imo.
Here is the situation. If Ohtani just paid the guys debts off. He at worst gets fined. If Ohtani bet on other sports through a illegal bookmaker he is fined and suspended half a year or more. If he bet on MLB he goose is cooked and there is not much of a way out of it.
@@araymond1able Even if he was the one bet on other sports through an illegal bookmaker, he most likely wouldn’t have been suspended considering Jarred Cosart was not suspended for illegal gambling because they found no evidence that he bet on baseball. That’s why it makes me think that Ohtani is not lying about it unless he bet on baseball
Where’s the interpreter. I wanna hear his side
Fired 😂 before he could speak lol
@sls...
Ohtani threw him under the short, yellow bus!
lol come on now.

Thank you to our host for this important segment. A good opportunity for someone to take advantage of a wealthy client. But, the Bookmaker knows all. Where is his sworn oath testimony?
Imagine When u got so much $$ u don't notice few millions missing
That happens to a lot of millionaires
Was Yamamoto present at the team meeting? He'd have a good view of that.
Except Yamamoto doesn’t speak English either.
Some interpreters and assistants can be shady and this is obviously the situation for Shohei. Interpreters can take advantage of a person or persons until they are caught. I can empathize with Shohei and it’s the worst feeling to know you’ve been betrayed by someone you’ve trusted for years and considered a friend.
He'd be a fool. No way
"I am not a crook" -Ohtani
I want to see what the investigation comes up with. Not a prepared statement written by his handlers.
If he didn't bet on baseball who cares....sports betting is everywhere. Every podcast, show, sport is sponsored by Fanduel, DraftKing, etc.
Not a big deal unless he bet on baseball.
Michael Jordan is a known gambler...still the goat.
Id even say long as he wasn't betting the Angles when he was playing i'm ok with it lol
Illegal bookmaker is a crime if you bet through them.
Sports betting is also illegal in California
@@araymond1able But who hasn't used one. I'm sure you know someone who has. You should report them.
@challenger516 Marijuana use to be too. It's a matter of time California will follow suit. Basically what I'm saying is it not that serious.
Something that nobody seems to be asking is this the extent of it? Were there no other bets made with other bookies? Was there any money spent on things besides bets?
It is also possible that he stole from him and gave to bookie or backer and split the loot up. How do we know he gambled the money away? Though it was hard to believe at first that Ohtani had zero idea where his funds were going all this time. It is possible he was duped and lost millions. Someone needs to account for these stolen funds. Not only his interpreter but those receiving funds via an illegal book-making operation. There seems to be at least 2 or more involved with this. They would know the money came from Ohtani, correct? I side with Ohtani for now. Since this person even lied about his resume. How did The Angels and Dodgers have zero idea about him. No one checked up on it?
Yeah right, and Bill Clinton never inhaled. Good grief. 😂
Good to see PACMAN!! When did he came back on the show
As Judge McAfee said to Fani Willis, this saga has an "ODOR of MENDACITY" !
If it’s a true story and not a distraction from real important newsworthy content (the tinfoil hat in me) then we’ll see that this is an organized embezzlement scheme and group effort. The money manager would have to be involved to some degree/have knowledge of money being diverted under fake pretenses and would have the bookkeepers/accountants involved hiding transactions from Ohtani. I’m assuming Ippei is a signer on Ohtani’s account to even initiate wire transfers and for large amounts like that, I would imagine the bank would have some questions. So I don’t think it’s impossible Ohtani didn’t know what was happening - fraud and embezzlement happens. I would just make the argument that it’s a collective group effort not a one man Ippei job.
He is pronouncing “gambling” wrong
2 years ago Jeff Passan was quoted as saying Ohtani speaks English to his teammates.
Many Americans can order at a restaurant in Japan. That doesn't mean they can read and understand newspapers.
It's not like speaking a language is like an on/off switch, like you either "can" or "can't" lol, there's levels
He probably knows some English but not at a fluent level. Hopefully he sees that it's probably better to learn English than going through an interpreter
Watch Rich Eisen loke normal people
If Ohtani was “just bailing out a friend to the tune of $4.5 million,” why change the story?
that story never came from Ohtani directly, it could have came from Ippei to Ohtani's rep, and they had no reason to doubt him at that moment

This is ridiculous. ALL variables point to Ohtani being very complicit in this. He’s a freaking gambler and the Dodgers and MLB know it.

Anddddddd millions!!!!!!
Can someone explain how and "WHY" an interpreter has access to this amount of money???
I could see a business manager or investor or accountant or something like that but who gives their

Thanks for talking about baseball… kinda
Why has there not been any charges filed against Ippei for stealing 4.5 million dollars? ESPN continues to try and find out whether this theft has been reported to the authorities, and the answer from Octane's camp today was "no comment". I mean, why? There is no reason not to share which authorities the crime has been reported to unless you either--(1) didn't report it to the authorities, which would ask the question why?; (2) Or you don't want people to read the report that was filed with the authorities, which could paint a different picture.
Ohtani or his camp also doesn't owe ESPN anything... especially of how shotty and over analytical of everything ESPN is. I get "ya let them know its not a big deal" but when due process is going on I get them being like "ya no we keeping all of this tight lipped"
