Oh my god! Is this guy for real? Did you even hear what they reported? Ippei is the one who opened the bank account for Ohtani. He assisted Ohtani with the password, knew all of the information of Ohtani, impersonated his voice to pass the verification, told his financial advisor Shohei wanted the account to be private. What more explanation do you need????

Ohtani didn’t even have access to his own bank account as the contact information was changed to Ippei’s who falsely identified to the bank as Ohtani. In the context of Ippei's text admitting he stole, that is not really reckless. At that point, he knew that there was a full investigation and he knew he would be found out. He knew they would look at Ohtani's phone, look into the bookie's records, and probably at that time knew the Feds would obtain audio recordings of him lying to bank employees. Ippei was not "reckless', as this guy in the Marlins cap says. He just knew he was caught and he was going to go down.

4:13 I know this skeptical hypothetical was basically thrown out in passing, but I think things are being viewed through the wrong paradigm. Ippei's machinations weren't some elaborate 4-D chess maneuvers. He wasn't hacking through firewalls and figuring out passwords w/ algorithms speeding through millions of possible permutations. The degree of difficulty of what he did was that of a college student stealing passwords and banking information from his trusting exchange student roommate.
And the nature of the theft wasn't some elaborately schemed 10-year plan where he'd siphon off "unnoticed" increments of cash into multiple untraceable offshore accounts. If anything, his theft was more akin to a desperate junkie pilfering bits of his mother's cash she had hidden in some cookie tin on the top shelf of her closet. He needed a fix and he was strapped for the buy money.
And this analogy can be extended onto Shohei's side of things too. Just like the mother, he had no reason to think that his cookie tin stash wasn't safe sitting where it was. Especially because it was just a "stash" and hardly the sum total of her disposable income. Maybe she didn't know her son knew the whereabouts of the stash or even about the existence of it. But she had no reason to go out of her way to check it on a regular basis. (And in Shohei's case, doing something even that seemingly routine would likely have required some English-speaking assistance.)
As for the "smoking gun" and Ippei's other "sloppy" text messages with the bookie, it's pretty obvious why they were in the form they were. He apparently met the guy at a poker game and they had a friendly rapport. And when it got the point Ippei was desperate for another bump (knowing full well that he could get cut off any minute, not only from his gambling habit itself but also the only means he saw to recoup his losses and replenish the stolen funds), of course he's going to try coming across as charming and disarming as possible.
And when the walls started closing in, Ippei was rightfully shitting his pants. When people do that, they tend to reach out to someone for relief or reassurance. Unfortunately for him, this bookie was LITERALLY the only person he could reach out to that he didn't have to explain the whole backstory to. And when the bookie tried to reassure him that it was a cover-up (because there's no way he knew he was making payments by sneaking into Shohei's account), Ippei added the part about technically stealing. The reason he added this was because he was hoping for additional reassurance as the first one was given w/o knowledge of all the facts. It's like the following:
A: My girl's mad at me because I had lunch with my ex.
B: Don't worry about. It was just lunch. It's not like you cheated on her.
A: Actually, I kinda, sorta did...
He needed to hear SOMEONE say it'll be okay.
Finally, the reason he probably said "technically," was because he genuinely thought he was "borrowing" without permission but with every intent on paying back all the money once he recouped his losses.
Most of these "legitimate questions" are incredibly lazy. They come from such a narrow and myopic scope of understanding and arrive at an some implied conclusion w/ very little critical thinking. It's exhausting.

Yet Samsun has to leave room for more reckless speculation and trolling, because this little media "scandal" story is just too valuable for the irresponsible commentators. As for MLB, it's reasonable for them to do whatever independent investigation they have going to ensure this doesn't have some tawdry details that could hurt them. But maybe they should consider the fact that MLB and the teams are all heavily involved with gambling in various forms. It's out of control, and MLB is the one that holds responsibility for the gambling cancer.

There's a great YT channel called Baseball doesn't exist. Watch the recent video on Japanese Baseball. It might change your mind on Ohtani's aloofness. Japanese culture is just built differently. They train like navy seals at Baseball from childhood and on. I can totally see Shohei never looking at his bank account, is all.

No one here is believing a story, we're believing a Federal Investigation and 37 page document that clearly shows he's a victim. He was certainly naive and trusting, but that's infinitely better than being a liar, addict, and illegal gambler who should be banned from MLB.

Even in this terrible clip they mention Tim Duncan. Shohei wouldn’t even be the 100th baseball player scammed by someone they trusted. The initial slap to conclusions and the conclusion being stuck to says more about the people making it than the evidence or reality.

I worked in the Trust industry (managing assets for estates, wealthy people, and even corporate pension funds, etc.) and also the banking industry for 20 years. There is a lot of embezzlement that goes on. The companies that are victims usually try to hush things up and hide as much from the media as possible, as it is bad look to the public. In cases where a large group of people are working for a wealthy person or corporation, there is a lot of cracks and holes which people can exploit. It's called diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect. In today's world, everyone's job is so specialized and narrow that people know only their own job functions and tasks and are blind to the bigger picture or what others may be doing. Often, the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Lots of opportunities for malfeasance and lots of cases of just plain lack of oversight.
