      Hey, I've had my budgie for around 2 months and he's still scared of me. He has only came out of the cage once before when nobody was in the house, he eats millet from my hand, but isn't tempted to perch on my finger for it.
      Any advice?

  • @eily_b

    I would NOT recommend letting budgies fly free. They will not come back most of the time because they get distracted with all the new environment and get lost. Also they could be attacked by wild birds that are living in your area. Get them a big outside aviary or put their cage outside but let them only fly free inside a safe environment.

    • @anthoidkhanal4987

      I totally agree but maybe the budgeis harness that you put around their body and wings will be good for them. Maybe even a little comfrotable, but never let them fly free cuase they'll get distraced and might not come back. When I first bought my budige and htey were still baabies I thought I would let them outside cuase they were little babies and couldn't fly much. Also they would be in my protection. So I let them out and in a few weeks they escaped but luckily all I had to do was climb my neighbors fence across the street to ge them. So don't let your budige fly freely unless their inside of your home.

    I know I'm late but I found this today and let's just say I cannot take it seriously LOL. There are so many points you made that just make me wonder if any actual research on harnesses or how to use them was done. Here's a few things that stuck out to me:
    -Comparing harnesses to clipping wings
    I mean I don't really understand the point here. Clipped wings mean a bird has limited mobility and little to no flight capabilities whether they are in their cage, in a room or around the house, or outside; while harnesses should only be used on occasion, when it is unsafe for the bird to be able to fly off. Especially at the start of the video, you made it sound like they're used to remove all freedom of flight and instead force the bird to be with you; which is entirely untrue if harnesses are used properly and the bird is trained and desensitized properly.
    -Claiming harnesses are uncomfortable or cause harm/damage
    A properly made harness, made from the right materials, correctly fitted to the bird and put on carefully and properly should not be uncomfortable, limit movement, or damage the bird's feathers, wings, etc.
    -The point on birds being jerked back when they reach the end of the lead/string
    A well-designed harness, as I've found, usually include a large section of elastic, to give the bird some warning and resistance before gently pulling them back, rather than suddenly jerking them back. This also means a bird can learn to turn around or change direction when they start to feel resistance.
    -Stressing the bird, risking damaging feathers and wings, etc., while putting the harness on and taking it off
    A bird should be properly introduced to the harness, and steps should be taken to teach the bird what's going on while the harness is being put on. For example, if you look up a video of someone introducing a harness, you'll likely see them teaching the bird to stick it's head through whatever loop it needs to go through. They're introduced to their wings being handled and being put through the loops, and there's a lot of work before the harness is even properly tightened, let alone the bird is taken outdoors with it. If the bird is being stressed, you'd need to take a step back. If they're being harmed at all due to the harness, you should check the fit and design of the harness and check you are using it correctly. (as well as check your bird physically and mentally before trying again)
    I could go on, but I don't want to piss people off. These are just my thoughts. I agree with many people that harnesses are not for every bird, nor is outdoor flights. Please, do your research, take it slow, and don't rush or force your bird (or yourself!) if they don't enjoy it or aren't ready.
    (also, I don't recommend attempting free flight: even if your bird is flawless indoors, there's a whole new level of distractions, dangers, stresses, and more that are found outdoors - but you can find more on that in others' comments or on other videos if you look them up.)
    thanks for reading, stay safe! :)

      @michelehemlokhexwhite4310 Год назад +4

      100pc agree with everything you say. Much handling or training goes into it. You have to have an excellent bond with your bird to harness train.
      My minimacaw comes out daily on the harness. She never tries to fly off unless she gets a fright, in which case she does a lap around my head.
      Never gets feather damage and she goes out 2hrs a day.
      I agree this video is poorly researched (normally love this channel). Free flying budgies is an incredibly bad idea due to their size and the potential predation.

    Free flying that small of a bird is even more dangerous than harnesses training them a hawk doesn't look at a macaw and go yeah I won't to pick a fight with that bird because there big and colorful wich also makes them easier to see when free flying.A bugie a hawk could swop and eat in 2 seconds because there so small.And there harder to see where they are in the sky.DO NOT FREE FLY WITHOUT PROFFECINOL TRANNING.He makes it sound easy I promise you if you take your bird out without professional training you will lose him/her.No matter how big or small

Proper grammar should be standard and always needs to be present in order to avoid confusion and misunderstanding. On your case, you are stating important information and trying to change the reader's perspective about letting birds free fly and you are responsible if people misunderstood. Even though what you are saying is true, people would rather listen to someone credible and grammar is a major thing to consider.

    • @mansishah6579
      @mansishah6579 4 года назад +6

      @@farfreez6367 No, I’m saying that a small bird, like a budgie or canary, should fly in the safety of indoor areas or an aviary. Outdoor free flight is very dangerous for small birds because they are so small and light that they could be carried away in the wind with no way to get back. Generally, with big birds, they wear a GPS on their tail so that they can safely free fly and be tracked. There are still no GPSs that are small enough to fit a budgie, and would most likely weigh a budgie down disallowing them to fly. If there were GPSs made for small birds, I would have no problem with free flying a small bird outdoors on a day that’s not windy. Unfortunately that still doesn’t exist.

      if you put the harness on right and properly train your budgie, it doesn't hurt the bird at all. with high quality harnesses, the fabric its made of should be very soft, and the leash it's attached to should be elastic so that if your bird flies away, it feels only a miniscule amount of tension and flies back to you safe and sound. basically, as long as you get a high quality harness (like the aviator harness for example) it should work very well and most likely will not harm your budgie.

    I complete agree with you, harnesses are not a solution. Maybe for big birds but not for such smal cuties. Our birds can fly free in the whole appartment. But the most time they spend with us in our dining room. There they have their cages, water, food and toys. We have a big cage in cas we have to travel with the flock. On one evening we had our budgie Sid in this cage with us in the garden. The cage has water, food, toys and a shadowed place, too. We thought he would like fresh air and sunshine. But as you know for sure budgies are curious but at the same time very scared. He sits the whole time on his perch and didn´t even react to us. He got to much impressions and didn´t really like the situation. So we gave it up after this first attempt. Free flight is not an option because of the reasons before. We live in a city of 300K souls. Although our garden is very quiet, we think one siren, loud traffic noice or church bell and little bugie will panic an fly away. And even if the flight will last only 3 or 5 miles, you´ll never find this little guy in a big city.

    I will buy a budgie harness NOT to train it but so that my budiges can go into the outside world and not just the inside of my home and their cage. Sure it depends on the thing I can teach my budgies to do with a budige harness but I will buy the kind that you put around their body and wings so that they have space but can't fly away. I might teach them a few things but if those things can be taught without a budgie harness then I will try to do it that way unless other wise. So the main reason that I will buy a budige harness is so that I can take them into the outide world and let them explore but in my grasp because I don't wan them to escape of course. They might not like it but in my opinion they will like the outside world becuase that's where their parents were born but they weren't. My budgies will be able to go outside but only with a budgie harness and they will be comfrotable not becuase I said so but becuase I'm going to buy the on that you put around their body and not aroundt their feet.

    Well it will be based on the material we use, and also if we don't use a harness we can't take our budgies out. They couldn't even survive outside if they fly away from us. I recommend harness but which is good and comfortable for birds. We can't just let them stay on our home they're whole life, we should take them out once In a while.

      If you are talking about a budgie, budgies are not the best free fliers. Unfortunately, they scare so easily and can fly away in an instant no matter how well trained they are. The best thing to do is to build some kind of avairy or something where the budgie will be able to have freedom, but not be able to get hurt.
      If you're talking about something like a cockatiel, gcc, or bigger, then birdtricks is a great channel to get tips from! There are other good channels, but I have only watched Birdtricks so far. Good luck!

    ⚠️HEY GUYS I NEED HELP! ⚠️I have 2 budgies! They are taken great care of, have a nice cage/toys, and i’ve had them for about a year now. The only problem is.. is that they won’t bond with me! They get really scared of me. They aren’t clipped anymore, but idk if i should do it again since they’re not tamed. But that also makes it super hard for me to take them out their cage and insure their safety. (they can’t fly super well) what should i do? I really want a good relationship with them, and also be able to take them out their cage a lot more.

    • @TheSwanbear
      @TheSwanbear 4 года назад +1

      Do NOT clip them, please! If you bird-safe the room they're in, you can let them out of the cage to fly freely even if they're not tame. Just leave the cage door open and they will eventually venture out by themselves. It can help to put a stick outside by the cage door, so they have a littel perch there to land on or take off from. Birds need excercise even if they're not tame, and they will always go back to their cage eventually since they usually love their cage and feel safe in it. Just wait them out (do this on days where you don't have to leave the house for several hours, in case they take a long time wanting to go back to the cage). Make sure food is always served inside the cage and nowhere else, and they will go back by themselves when they're hungry. Build a little play area on top of the cage, they will most certainly stay there in the beginning.
      To help them bond with you - always use millet! You want them to associate you with positive things, and millet is the way to go. Always feed them millet out of your hand, do not put it in the cage for them. Since millet is such a high value treat for budgies, making sure it always comes from your hand will eventually lead them to associate your hand with treats and positivity. Also - take it slowly. You can't tame a bird, but you can earn its trust, and this is a slow process. If the bird gets scared, panics and flies away, you took it too far for their comfort level. Take a step back, start from the beginning. Don't take it personally when they panic or if they don't want to engage with you, they're their own personalities and may not be interested in bonding with you. Some budgies just don't want to bond with a human, and that's okay! I have four budgies and two of them are just not interested in hanging out with me. That's fine! They're all different. :) I hope this helps a little, feel free to ask if you have more questions! Best of luck!!
