My partner recently accidentally let both of my cockatiels out while we were on vacation.I was instantly able to recall my male mid flight and put him back into the carrier. My female was so spooked she flew extremely high, I followed her from tree to tree for 3 days from sun up to sun down. She is recall trained and made multiple attempts to get back to me but unfortunately she got out during an extremely windy week. My poor baby is still gone, the group of free flyers I work with tell me to keep up hope and that birds are discovered to be found months after being lost but it’s pretty hard to keep hope. It’s been heartbreaking.

  • @began8674
    @began8674 3 года назад +38

I got home from work one day and couldn’t find my budgie anywhere. Someone had come in and left his cage open and my bedroom door open. I didn’t know where he’d be or how long he was gone for I just saw a window open in the kitchen facing a thick forest/bush area and started looking there. For the next 2 days I went out there morning till dark looking for him with a speaker blaring budgie contact call noises. On the second evening I started hearing him replying to the speakers and managed to spot him 2 stories up a tree. We had a great bond (he was probably starving too) so when he spotted me he instantly tried to fly down and got swept to the neighbours yard. This happened 3 times till eventually he landed in a tree I could actually climb. Im terrified of heights but I did it to get my little guy.
Every single day from the next day I’ve done at least a couple minutes of recall and upping the difficulty of flight training (descending, ascending, turning corners, boomerangs, everything I can think of) also have built an aviary so he can get some wind practice. This all should of happened long ago before the accident, I’m ALWAYS so incredibly careful but I have learnt when you live with other people it doesn’t matter how careful you are anything can happen.
Glad your little blue is safe. It’s so scary, I was literally balling my eyes out searching for him in the bush.

@@FeatheredFlock so I live in an apartment so he can't really fly outside directly. He has charged the door but he would have to make it through 3 doors (our house door, the staircase door and the door to outside) to make it outside flying. He cannot be on the floor because I have cats and a crawling baby. So he needs to fly from perch to perch instead of walk. He's making really good progress through. He's a bit stubborn and set in his ways.

I wanted to cry! But then he was starved and decided mommy's hand and millet was a lot better. The second time was all my fault I walked out the door and didnt know he was on my shoulder but I got him within 20 minutes that time, it was dusk and he got scared by our barn cat so he flew right to me. Now we call SCUTTLE IS OUT! before we open the door, my mom makes sure I got eyes on him or hes with me before she opens the door and I always cage him before I go out the door just to be sure. @@VietCakes It's much better to teach a bird to fly because it has the skills to come back. If you clip a bird and it gets outside, it can still fly with a gust of wind. If you don't clip your bird, you teach it to fly to your hand, on command, on the first call of its name, which is recall, if you desensitize it to the outdoors by harness training them, if you teach it to descend and ascend from great heights, and to curve, it would be so much easier, less stressful, and more likely for you to get your bird back.

Wow. Compelling and heart wrenching. 4 minutes? JUST 4 minutes? No that was 240 seconds, each second an eternity.
I felt every one of your tears and fears. It is the hidden cost of caring, but I’d never ever give up caring, no matter how traumatic the circumstances. Blueberry is beautiful, and so is her human family. Jamie, hope you got some quality recuperation, STAT!
Thank you for sharing and for loving these wonderful creatures.

That must of been frightening. It happened to me and I never told anyone. My Lovebird Sprinkles got out. It was terrifying. I always here that you should stay calm, not me as I was hysterical, I couldn't help it. He flew out the door and I ran out and was calling him and hoping he did not go far. I ran back in to get millet spray. I called him and he came back and landed on my head and then I had a meltdown. So many things went through my head in the few minutes that he was out. So yes it can happen to anyone and I am extra cautious and it still happened.
Glad I could share my story, I feel better now.

We attract the things we fear most. If it happens again remember to breath as we tend to hold our breath when we are in a stressful situation.
I am sure that you felt the same with each of your birds the first time you gave them the gift of freeflight. I would like to thank you and Blueberry for proving that success comes from good training and what is possible.

A few months ago my lutino tiel flew out of the garage! We chased him down the street and he flew into the neighbors yard. Fortunately the neighbors let us in their backyard as soon as we told them what was happening! I am so thankful that we found him and that my little baby is safe.

Firstly most importantly I am glad your Budgie Blueberry is safe again . The videos with Blueberry have made me think I can have a pet in my first floor one bedroom flat.
Thank you for showing this video because it now has made something to consider with making my first floor one bed flat, bird friendly. My flat when I bought it had the doors between living room, front door and kitchen taken out to create more space by the previous owners and I never replaced them I am going to have to find a solution to create a quick but solid barrier so my pet bird. If get one does not fly out when I answer the door. I really would like a pet and I don't think it is fair to keep a cat or a dog cooped up in a flat for 10-11 hours in a day while I go to work I also don't want a fish tank I want a pet I can interact with too.
But then I saw your videos and a few of other peoples and saw Budgies are really cool fun and interactive little pets and I thought. That might be the perfect pet for me. So I am doing my research first. While doing it I am going to implement as much as I can into my flat to make it not only space saving still but bird friendly. This might take years. But at least if you plan to have a pet companion you can spend years enjoying researching how to care for them and what safe environment they need first. I won't rush into this but thank you again for all your videos I love them :)

Wow, we haven’t recalled trained our Budgie, we get her excited to come to us but it’s 50/50. Her wings aren’t clipped because honestly if god forbid something happened she would be able to fly away during an emergency. But we definitely need to start training her with this!!

My cockatiel got out a month ago. I kept so calm it seemed like I wanted it to happen. Everyone thought I didn't wanna get him back because of how I was acting. It's because I have bad anxiety and I have panic attacks If I started crying or freaking out I would literally have a bad Panic attack. Then I wouldn't be able to help look for him. He was gone 3-4 days. The day after he got out someone found him a few blocks down hiding in a tree. Then On the 3rd day we found a Facebook post of him someone found him! So we went and got him the next morning

That happened to me last week, my 8 month old Quaker parrot got out, we live on a lake in Florida with some huge cypress trees, well Poncho decided to fly to the tallest tree about 80 foot up. I was amazed at how fast that little shit could fly but also scared, the lake we live on is a bird sanctuary and is inhabited by Osprey Hawks, Kite Hawks, Red Tail Hawks, and Bald Eagles. All I could think about is one of those Hawks seeing this little parrot as a quick meal. Thank god we have been working on recall training, he's not very responsive to verbal commands but does respond to a police whistle, I blew the whistle and he flew towards me but landed on our house roof about 10 feet away, and then he said "I'm a pretty boy" and starts laughing. My girlfriend grab some millet from the house and when Poncho saw that he flew right to her arm. That was scary but a good learning curve of how important it is to train your birds in recalling them. These Quaker parrots are incredibly smart, Poncho followed our Border Collie through the doggy door to stretch his wings....

Had parakeets most of my life. Never had one make it outside but this is so true on training your birds like this. My current bird is a rescued ringneck dove. I discovered her in a hotel parking lot. I wasn't familiar with doves but she seemed like a pet rather then a wild bird. We had parakeets that would come when called so I thought why not try. I snapped my finger and heald them out and she came straight to me out of a tree. We had a parakeet we were traveling with so my mom went and got his food to give her as she was attacking my mouth for food. After eatting she flew away and disappeared. Next day I decided if I saw her again I would take her. She was with a flock of sparrows when I came out and they flew away but she went to a brick wall. She saw me walking to her and I heald out my hand and she came straight to me again. She happily went inside with me. No one reported her missing so ten years later she is happy and healthy after traveling back and forth from AL to NY countless times and has done a bit of camping in a tent. I don't know who taught her to come when called but it saved her life.

Years ago I had the coolest aviary outside that I had 2 budgies in. 2 budgies became 10. I had no intention of breeding them. Didn't even do anything special to make that possible. It just happened. There was a separate enclosure for my finches.
I can attest to how quickly they move. We had 2 doors in n out. Thank goodness because there were a couple times that they got into the entry/exit. I know that panic that washes over you. 😲
I hope to one day recreate that aviary. It was during the time that my chronic health issues started. I had a chair in there and I have such fond memories of just hanging out with them. It was definitely my happy place.
I'm so glad you had a positive outcome Jami. 💙 Budgies are such quick little buggers.

This is exactly why all pet birds regardless of everything a bit if recall and desensitisation training can take the place of clipping, ..it's vip it's what I keep telling the members of my free flight fb group ..Irish flyers (Parrot) ..if anyone is intrested in free flight in Ireland. .but you don't have to be from Ireland your welcome to join its a little group ...exactly what I keep saying ..over n over and will keep saying till there's no more clipped birds left in the world..OK that might be a distant dream but a girl can hope..

youre right! i made the choice to clip my first bird’s wings because she was a baby cockatiel and hurt herself by flying into the wall repeatedly. i got her a couple months ago, and since she wasn’t tame, it also helped that she couldn’t fly away from me whenever i walked over. that being said, her wings will never be trimmed again. i got a one year old (fully tame) cockatiel w/o clipped wings a few weeks ago and im so excited for my first baby to grow her feathers back (:

After having an incident where my Goffin flew off and was lost for 40 minutes- I definitely understand that it felt like eternity! 🤯I'm so grateful for all my family and friends that were willing to help, but thankfully my mom heard Cheeky's blender noises. She somehow got to the middle of a bush and was so terrified she just hid. I got a lot of nasty fear bites digging her out of the bush. Working on recall and desensitization training, but man does Cheeky bite first and ask questions later during hormone season. 😬😭 The comment of when vs if your bird gets out terrifys me. I'm the worst trainer, both my birds won't listen. 😫💔
