Excellent video. I needed this. My sister is the narc. I went no contact a year ago. After years of hoping and thinking she would change, I realized that's not going to happen. "Not accepting reality causes chronic suffering". So true. "Suffering is optional, pain is not". Thank-you!!

I cut my family off for a year. I have been going through waves of feelings including sadness, guilt and anger. Right now I find myself in the anger phase, where memories will suddenly pop up in my mind and I think of the pain I went through and how my family mocked or added to that pain. I feel like I’m almost reliving painful parts of my life all over again. I need to get a grip on this.

    Amazing video!
My parents have blown past my boundaries, twice now, regarding my husband and I's marriage regarding our jobs and church as well!!
It is rude, non of their business and they excuse it with saying "well, we're your parents and we care about you and worry." 🤦🏻‍♀️
They even USED God to cross this boundary just last weekend. "God told me to bring it up..."
It's not ok. It's not treating me like an adult. It's unacceptable.
I am now taking a break from my parents, I don't know how long...all I know is that I do need to work on radical acceptance of them and my family, that I am the black sheep and that I need space to continue to heal and grow.
They've shot themselves in the foot, unfortunately.
    But I am good!

everyone talks about the importance of acceptance (big book, too). And it's not really hard to see how important it is. But nobody, literally nobody, explains just how one accepts smth. What exactly does one have to do, what actual tangible actions does one have to take in order to reach acceptance. Nobody seems to know

Alanon talks about Awareness-Acceptance-Action. My understanding is without proper acceptance we will repeat what has happened. For me accepting the pain that a situation has caused is what prevents me from getting into a similar situation.

The problem is I do not want to relate to them at all. But circumstances mean I have to (elderly parent). I have several boundaries that I enforce successfully. But what is left is a husk. Just shows the relationship for what it is now. Nothing.
But I liked your “friend Mary” example where there are some positives but lower expectations and simple boundaries to put in. I also like the difficult brother example, where there is some acceptance of pain and limitations. And where self care also increases.
In my parent’s case I have all the necessary boundaries I can and have no expectations. But the pain of having basically a (fake) relationship with someone you don’t want to is what is there.

Hi Jerry, how would you distinguish between pain and suffering? Thanks, Sam ( London)

    • @jerrywise
      @jerrywise  2 года назад +5

I am using pain and suffering these ways
Pain is what we feel when we realize a difficult thing or belief (more acute)
Suffering is what we do when we chronically have pain ongoing due to our denial (chronic pain=suffering).
The article I refer to shares this distinction between pain and suffering.
      Thank you for watching Sam
