As a Minnesotan, I love that you are talking about this. This tournament is my favorite to watch in hockey, next to the WJC and the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The light-hearted nature of it combined with the intense competition between local rivals is a ton of fun.
@Rhys Hickey unfortunately, the tournament ended tonight. There were a couple of alleged, "less than legitimate" online streams that had it though. You should be able to find some highlights on RUclips though, if you're still interested.
I've been playing hockey almost 30 years. I live in Southern California, have been watching this tournament every year for the past 6 years and I can attest that this tournament IS THE best hockey to watch. What I love about watching is not only are these kids good, but nobody is selfish and nobody is a puck hog. There is passing, plays setup. Its really amazing to see kids actually utilize a power play. Then you see these kids make amazing defensive plays. Then the hits are clean. And by the way.. that kid with the afro is a 6'7 defensemen!!! What the hell is in the water in Minnesota. LOVE THIS TOURNAMENT.
As a Minnesotan I can tell you this is a major event in the Twin Cities. I've heard people say MN HS hockey is bigger than Texas HS football and that is a huge statement. It's held in the Energy Center with a packed house of 18k every year. If you like hockey, you should check it out.
I went to Delano HS... we usually lost to Orono, but half our school would get our parents to excuse us on Thursday and Friday to go down and watch the games, scout girls, and just enjoy the hockey atmosphere. Was one of my favorite times of year!
I am third generation season ticket holder. My grandpa got them in 1962, then my dad had them, now I do. Same pair of tix for 60 years. My dad and I still go every year. I skipped school to go with him when I was a kid since it starts mid-week at 11 AM and now I skip work. 😁 It should be on any hockey fan’s bucket list. Howard Cosell has called the tourney on TV. Same with Gary Thorne. Lou Nanne has been at it for 60+ years.
I’m a season ticket holder for the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. Inherited the tickets from my late stepfather in 1996, and he had them starting in 1975. It is some great hockey usually featuring many future D1 hockey players, and I’ve watched dozens that have gone on to the NHL/AHL as well. My friend got on the waitlist to buy season tickets, and I think he had to wait 4 years before some became available.
The best tradition in hockey, imho, is the handshake line at the end of every playoff series, even the Stanley Cup final. It's an all-too rare example of true gentleman sportsmanship. When these big, tough men who've spent up to 7 games basically willing to kill or maim each other for the hardest-to-win sports trophy in the world, have to line up and face each other with civility and humility--well, I just think it's a good way to put everything back into perspective. It's a game, and it's fun to play and watch, and we can all be friends at the end.
That's the one thing about competing at a high level in a big-ass team sport, the support you get is unbelievable. I chose track in university, maybe I should have done rowing or something, because there was absolutely no support and the program fell apart. But I did get rookie of the year that 1 year.
Born and raised in Minnesota and attended many tournaments. I've lived in The Philippines the past 8 years but thankfully KSTP streams all the games for free. So I got see my Skippers win the AA title even though games started around 9 a.m. for me locally. Love this tournament. About the only thing that compares for me is college hockey. Look for clips of the Minnesota Gophers hosting the Michigan Wolverines this Saturday for the B1G championship. 10,000 plus fans are going to rock 3M Arena. Thanks for this video it was fun to watch.
I’m jelly of the fellas who have majestic lip sweaters in high school. My mustache still doesn’t grow fully in the middle and these guys have a healthy mane 😭
My first tournament was 76. It is one of the greatest sporting events in the country. Used to be just one class - only 8 teams - that was even better. Great atmosphere and great hair salads.
It's the best part of March Madness! This year's tournament did NOT disappoint! Class A: Mahtomedi beat previously undefeated Warroad 6-5 in Double OT! It was awesome! In Class AA Minnetonka held off Edina 2-1 to win the title! So awesome and so much talent!
It is an unbelievable experience. Your first time, stepping on the ice in front of those people is crazy I couldn’t even stickhandle a puck in warm-ups.🤣
Been to many games in person. Both hometown regular season and playoff games. I even got the honor of being apart of the intermission entertainment during a finals game something like 12 or 13 years ago. They picked a mite team to play a half ice scrimmage and that just happened to be my black mite team. I was maybe 8 or 9 and I still remember how crazy it looked and felt to play in front of so many people. The X even gave us our own little private dressing room with name tags for every player that we all got to keep and I still have to this day. Hockey goes hard in Minnesota. I’d argue harder than most parts of Canada. Also gotta interject the X is arguably one of the nicest arenas in the whole league even being 20 some years old. (Yes the home locker room looks like the average local rink locker room but everything else is immaculate). Every inch of that arena is steeped in hockey history and memorabilia.
I personally like the deathhawk but very few people can pull it off and it's actually looked better on the girls I've seen with them. I have a girl hawk and when it's down you can't tell it's shaved on the sides. I will usually have some design etched into the side and clip one side of my hair up with a flower bow. It's been my favorite style and cuts my hair styling time down to like 20 mins instead of an hour. Plus it's hot here where I live so it's lighter for me.
teams are selected not by their regular season record, but by winning their section tournament...not sure how you didn't mention the all hair hockey team!!
It's worth noting the hairstyles are insane on pretty much every player all because one guy started doing videos highlighting the best "lettuce" at the tournament back in 2011. Every one of these kids is trying to make it into his top 10. You used to get the standard hockey hair and then a few notable standouts from the goofy kids. Now, it's as much a part of the competition as the games are. Ya love to see it.
This is March Madness in Minnesota. The state kind of shuts down during the high school hockey tournament.....it's the biggest high school sports event in the entire country
If you truly love hockey, then plan a trip to MN for the second weekend in March. The MSHSL Hockey Final is one of the most fun experiences you'll have as a fan. You can pretty much guarantee you'll be watching at least one or two future NHL'ers. You'll laugh your a$$ off listening to the crowd chants go back and forth. And, between games, you can hit Tom Reed's Hockey City Pub (or a number of other bars) within a few blocks of the Xcel Center. The whole thing belongs on the bucket list of anyone who considers themselves a "hockey purist".
You can stream it for free this year it is on a local ABC affiliate under something called WDIO. Or just search Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament.
Nice, very prestigious indeed. Kids growing up in Minnesota that play hockey dream of just making it to this tourney. The turnout for the class AA games fills an NHL arena. One caveat, teams aren't "selected" based on record". Each team plays in a Section tournament whose winner "makes it" to the State Tourney. Big upsets happen and some teams favored to win some years don't even make it. Intense and high level competition with a strong backing from fans
