I have to disagree about Orr and Ocasek’s voices sounding similar. Very easy to tell them apart. Orr’s has a nice range, clear and refreshing tone. Ocasek on the other hand, has an interesting unique “dopey” quality. Very suitable for what was known as New Wave at the time. Orr could do Justice with “Any” of the songs that Ocasek sang but the same cannot be said for Ocasek covering a song for example as “All I can Do”. It wouldn’t work. However, it is such a loss to lose a genius in Ocasek. A class act, pioneer, and a revolutionary in his craft. The Cars had/have some of the best “Feel Good” of all time and it is to the credit of this beloved man.
Ric may have been the brain of the band but Benjamin was definitely the heart of The Cars, with an amazing voice, great live performer as well and by the way, they sounded nothing alike, go home grunge, you're drunk.
Maybe he was underrated by Ocasek since he decided to split, but he was highly appreciated by the public. His songs are better known and loved than those sang by Ocasek.
I’ve been on a Cars binge lately and can’t believe how young Benjamin was when he passed away - he seemed like a gentle soul, more so than the average “rocker”. I could be wrong but he was and will always be my favorite. Funny how when I was little I didn’t realize there were two singers, and when I did figure it out it I realized the popular flashy ones I liked (and were popular) in jr high and high school were sung by Rick, but the ones that stuck with me all these years and will always be in my memory are sung by Benjamin.
It's weird I never new back in late 70s there were 2 singers but all the songs that were my favorite were sung by ORR. Just something different about his voice that made the song more haunting in a way. Still respect RIC for writing the songs but damn just loved Ben's voice. RIP Ben and Rick.
Benjamin could've dashed in the early days of The Cars and make a career on his own. But two things didn't go his way : songwriting wasn't his thing (Ric wrote practically all of The Cars Songs) and he was a way too loyal friend to Ric. Benjamin had everything: a melodic and beautiful voice, the whole rock star look nailed down, stage presence and played a cool bass... It's also said he was very shy and reserved, he had self-esteem issues due to the fact that he didn't finished school (dropped out in the 11th grade) and that his smoking and drinking escalated after his relationship with Diane failed (his songwriting girlfriend and whom he called true love). Also it's said, that after the Cars broke up and after he had his chance to record on his own, the fact that music industry wasn't signing soft rock artists was another downer In Benjamin's life. But he kept going despite so many downturns, he played small venues in his native Ohio with a band he had in the mid and late 90s. It's so sad to know he died of pancreatic cancer due to his smoking. Such a promising artist if he had have more exposure early on. RIP Benjamin and Ric.
Drinking AND smoking are contributing factors to pancreatic cancer. My Mother passed from it. Very good insight. I loved being a teen/young adult in the 90’s, but The Cars were my favorite as a child. A small part of me wishes I could have been a teen in the late 70’s, and saw them live after Candy O. Ben’s songs (sang) are my favorite ever.
Been listening to him for 40 years. That's another thing that sucks about getting old : you have to watch everyone around you die. RIP I'll see you when I get there
I loved every single member of the band but the one that stands out from them was and is Benjamin🤘🙏🙏with out him wouldn’t be possible all the success. Benjamin’s voice was way so unique, not only because his good looks, it was his golden and silky voice🥰🥰
“Moving In Stereo” is one of the earliest songs I remember hearing as a young child. Always loved the Cars and bought all the albums growing up. The Panorama album is on my “deserted island” list. So glad I traveled to Chicago to see their 2011 tour. RIP Ric! Condolences to the family.
Ben and Ric's voices were nothing alike! Ric had a quirky and kind of segmented vocal that faired well on some of the cars fun and light-hearted songs. But Ben's vocals were powerful and focused. No disrespect meant to Ric whatsoever, but no way is Drive a Top 5 hit with him singing it. May Ric rest in peace and reunite with his friend.
You can always distinguish Ric's voice from Ben's voice !!! Who ever said that it's hard to distinguish the two voices must not have a very good ear for music !!!
Not when you’re 14 or and had it , the LP , for the first time in 78’ then Candy O comes out in 79’ and saw em on their first arena tour , first tour that combined half of their debut LP and half off Candy O with Nick Lowe opening up at the San Diego Sports Arena , only then did we even care as we didn’t pay attention until live in concert and saw Orr take over the first of 14 songs and 1 encore , 1.5 total time on stage if that ? Then we saw Candy O tour in about less than a year , then Panorama in 81 with The Motels all in San Diego and maybe 1 hour 15 minutes Panorama concert , fans were bent then we knew it was how the Cars rolled , they HATED live performances and Ric says so in many magazines and interviews where in the studio they “ were geeks with perfection “ - Greg Hawkes . Way to technical and quirky along with Rics shut in approach and Robinson’s bored look every time you seen him live or live clip , look at EE’s bio and he was the opposite always wanting to play live and long , same with Ben but they just couldn’t pull off the studio sound that my favorite Band of ALL - TIME wanted to give us , but it just never sounded the same , ever out of the studio versus today with auto tune on everywhere and no real talent any longer out there that Rivals the 70s - 80s punk / rock genre , you’ll never ever see this again and instead they push freaks at us now ... nope no new music here since Avenged 7Fold in 2013 and before that , nothing but memories and good ones . Nightspots You can’t hold on too long Almost ALL of Heartbeat City Cruiser Don’t tell me Know Other cuts Too difficult to bring that studio sound back in the day and even in the 87’ Door to Door with Strap Me in or Double Trouble was a tough sound to bring with Eastons solos had no edge live imo . And they had Roy Thomas Baker make em famous recording that debut LP in the UK . We Just wanted a better live show and was let down in live vs studio versions and the play lists . IMO . Thanks love all the Cars fans
True Cars fans who listen to their albums over and over again know there is a difference between Ric and Ben. Ben’s singing is melodic and sometimes rough, whereas Ric’s is hiccupy, erratic and sometimes deadpan. It’s not that difficult to tell the difference.
Not much mention of Elliot. One of the most underrated guitarists. Always managed to find the perfect part, even if it was understated and not filled with guitar histrionics, it was a guitar part that became integral for the song. RIP Ric.
PeteW. At the moment we’re focus on the passing of Ric Ocasek. But the whole band is as one in our memories. Yes Elliot Easton is great. And he’s one of the first guitarist in a band that I knew by name as a young kid, apart from Andy Taylor of Duran Duran.
losing Eddy Money and Ric Ocasik almost in the same breath was a hard blow to me. These guys were magically cool on stage and they made me feel like I was cool.
Thanks for the great songs Ric. I disagree with when the dude in this video says its hard to distinguish between Ric's voice and Ben's. They in my opinion are very different and easily distinguishable.
thetubedude2011 at first I didn’t know Ben Orr was a singer. But hey I was a young kid. I figured it out in my late teens, when we finally got cable tv/ MTV. I can easily tell the difference now.
@@geraldobrien7323 Gerald, they were a GREAT live band. Played and sounded superb. I saw then in '80 for their 3rd album tour and then in '84 . The performances were great Buuuuut they do NOT interact with the audience. No introductions to songs or story telling, or band member introductions. Just a quick "Thank You" and in to the next song. A very "sterile" feeling. Kind of left with a feeling that there was a "void" if you will. The "just keep it business" I understand was how Ocasek wanted it. So when "The New Cars" former with Todd Rundgren, Elliott Easton and Greg Hawkes. There was interaction with the audience and it felt "Right". I have a feeling Gerald that is what you might be talking about in terms of the Cars Live performances. That would be the ONLY thing I thought they could have done better on.
@@geraldobrien7323 ........I urge you to view concert footage of their lives performances and check it out. Also watch The New Cars and you will see what I mean
Oh brother someone always has to ruin it all by bringing in religious bs. This is supposed to be memorabilia for Rick Ocasek, nobody here wants to read about him heading for internal torment over his beliefs that are nobody's business anyway. Keep that crap to yourself!!
If you can't tell the difference between Ric and Ben's vocals then you need some Q-tips. Ric had a more mechanical quirky vibe. Ben was more haunting and crooner like. Either way they complemented each other like no other band. They're both officially "universe eternal" Rock in peace gents...and thanks for all the music.
@@Jgeneraledger23 MTV 😂😂😂 if you needed MTV to decipher who's singing a lead vocal on a Cars song...then good for you. Glad it helped ya. Not so much for those of us who actually "listen" to the music. No slight on you. Really.
@@Jgeneraledger23 I heard them sing before there was MTV, they did have songs on the radio before that(in fact many of them sung by Benjamin Orr, like their first one "Just What I Needed"). Even though I was a kid, I had no issues telling they were not the same guy. Because they don't sound very much a like. And they have different styles.
Yes Rick O wrote the hard songs for Ben. He admitted that. Ben Orr on vocals is some of the best post punk new wave music I’ve heard. Rick on vocals would lower your IQ. He sang his worst written songs.
The Cars are still one of the most important and great bands in rock... they managed to do something extraordinary to make pop rock music that was excellent and memorable. I remember I was in high school when they got really big and they changed everything... hard rock, new wave and pop all together in a classy way
Cars videos were clearly the major thrust for their success. They were a perfect marriage for their music with a visual that took their tunes to a whole new level. The Cars videos were fun and not as overly thought out as say Michael Jackson's or other artists but rather their videos whether it be the fun ones or the serious "Drive" all perfectly complimented their music. In the Cars case, they were brilliantly served by their record company, video directors and management because they never made a bad video and every video was right for their music. Early MTV and the Cars were a match made in heaven.
I loved The Cars, they were a shining star in the muddle that was the 80's, Disco, Metal, New Wave, Rock all looking for relevance. The Cars rose above the chafe with a unique sound and great tunes. RIP Ric, you and Ben can rock out for eternity.
Just the fact that Ocasek had to mention that Orr "was drinking a bit" makes me wonder why he would say something like that about someone he had known forever and loved. Pretty awful. He didn't have to mention that. Seen many interviews about the Cars and am always left with the same impression of Ocasek.. Megalomaniac, arrogant and a bit eccentric. Without Benjamin's voice the Cars wouldn't be the Cars. Maybe Ric was jealous that Ben actually had a better voice and was so easy on the eyes. Watch the Magic video. Ric walking on water says it all.
If anything it was Ric's controlling ways that probably drove Ben to drink too much. Ric screwed Ben & the band over & the way he just pulled the plug on the band was very selfish. Ben was betrayed by his 'best friend' & I think he was very hurt & very angry about it. Dianne Gray Page didn't help things either... 😢
Loved the cars since 83 & I’m 42 years old now. I can’t remember a time when a cars song wasn’t fresh in my mind... much love & respect to Ric, Rest In Peace to one of the most underrated & best song writers I know.
Gina Bayer that’s awesome. I don’t recall as a young kid The Cars coming to Phoenix Az. But I can see my self pogo dancing in the crowd to Cars music. Im a straight Male, but I always thought Ben Orr was a handsome dude. I envy his hair. Lol!!
VAL13C you’re pretty funny. I live in Texas now. My oldest daughter lives in Maricopa, AZ. I left Cali in 2008. I saw quite a few bands back in the day. Aerosmith, KISS, AC/DC, Eddy Money, ZZ Top, Joe Walsh, several others
I was fortunate enough to see Benjamin Orr right before he died when he was in the band big people. I saw him at some club in South Orange county California where I lived most of my life. It was a pretty good band
Gina Bayer I’m from So Cal ( born & raised). I used to love the south OC. Now it’s congested. I’m hoping to leave CA soon, but the weather still keeps me here. It’s a love/hate thing.
DChaveit415 I totally get it. I love Texas but I miss a few things. I there in March and walked the HB pier with my daughters and brought back so many memories
Mr. Jones I was born and raised in Huntington Beach. Raised my kids in Mission Viejo and Lake Forest. I lived in Riverside county for awhile too. My nephew is Joe Enfante the bassist for Roxann
Mr. Jones oh very cool! I was born in 65. When I was a young teen I had a boyfriend who lived in an apartment upstairs from Jacks surfboards in Huntington Beach and I loved sitting in the window people watching and watching the ocean. South Orange County got so congested and expensive and people were very stuck up and mean and I just needed to get away. I’m very humble and down to earth and people in Texas are nice and just like to have a good time. I do miss the ocean a lot. I was in California in March when my mom passed away. I miss my granddaughters in Murrieta
I met him in an Atlanta "club" in 1999 or 2000. He was with Derek St. Holmes and Pat Travers. They were very friendly and spoke with me and mostly my uncle. They had formed a band, Big People. Travers was eventually booted. I saw them perform right before Orr's death. He played bass but was obviously sick. He died shortly after.
At the 56 second mark: "Casual listeners might not have realized there were two lead singers because their voices are rather tough to distinguish from each other". Say what? Their voices are nothing alike. If you likened to Van Halen, Ric is more about style and delivery ala David Lee Roth while Ben had the better voice, like Sammy Haggar. Of course the great part for Cars fans is that you didn't have to choose one or the other as you had both! RIP to both Cars lead singers.
People always say they are underrated. They couldn't help it considering the other bands and artists they were up against at the time. You could argue that the late 70s and early 80s was the absolute highest quality era of music in the history of the world. The sheer quantity is why they are underrated and why it took so long for them to make it to the hall of fame. Imagine if they had released their first and subsequent albums starting in 2010. They would own the last 10 years outright.
The first two albums were fantastic !!! Every song on both albums were really good. Panorama was a little bit of a drop off with Touch and Go being the best song in the album. Then they went too pop for me, but those first 2 albums in 1978 and 79 were epic !!!
Carol Canuso I remember not having cable, and all the kids at school talking bout music videos on MTV. I envied in jealousy and hate. And would cry to my parents “I want my MTV”!! Two month later for my birthday I had MTV. Mom and Dad had already planned on getting it way before all my crying. They just wanted to surprise me. Best birthday everrr. Like totally.
Me too. There was also a show on regular t.v. called "Friday Night Videos." Another called "Night Flight." I think the first music video I ever seen was "Beat it" by MJ. Better days my friends. RIP Ric and Ben.
August377 oh yeah, Friday Night Videos. I once canceled a blind date with a beautiful girl, I was told. Because Tiffany was gonna premiere her “I Think Were Alone Now” video. I was 16yrs old. I also saw Duran Duran’s A View to a Kill video for the first time on FNV. Yes The 80s were the total rad, Like for Sure you know. RIP, Ric Ocasek and Eddie Money.
I ❤️ The Cars !!! They were , still are and will always be a staple of my ultimate playlist!!! Rest In Peace Ric Ocasek, the lyrical genius, quirky singer and producer. Rest In Peace Benjamin Orr, the smooth vocalist , great bass player and humble 2nd frontman. Yes that's your face and what a handsome face it is!
Loved the Cars music. But this video, not so much. Obviously, this video is intended to pay respect to Ric Ocasek following his death. Ric was a great songwriter for sure. But this video doesn't do justice for the other guys in the band, especially Ben Orr. Ben and Ric were playing together long before they formed The Cars. When they met, Ric was nobody, but Ben already had a band that played as the house band on The Big 5, which was a TV show that was broadcast weekly in Cleveland. After they formed The Cars, Ben sang most of their popular songs, and he contributed to writing some of their songs. Certainly Ben and the other guys contributed to the music for their songs, even if they didn't write the lyrics. It takes more than lyrics to make a hit song. At their concerts, Ben and Elliot Easton had a much greater stage presence, than Ric. RIP to both Ric and Ben, but don't let anyone tell you that Ric Ocasek was the only guy in The Cars who had talent.
Phew, I"m so relieved this vid isn't some mud-slinging expose. Ric Ocasek seems like a good sort of guy who just wanted to make fun, challenging ,pop music with his buds. He was probably the last person to think The Cars would make minor music history, but they did, and I'm thankful for that. The Cars were great, no arguing that, and I hope people continue to pick up on their irresistible popn/new wave/art rock sensibility. They were eclectic, eccentric, fashionable and fun, and the indie kids are still scratching their heads to this day as to how they (the Cars) got those killer guitar tones on the first album.
I run 5 days a week with a mp3 player. 15 Cars songs are on that player...my favorite!!!....Rip Ric😢....ps...enjoyed their earlier work more than the later songs. I do love Go Away...great song and also love some of the songs from Ric's solo album Beatitude
I saw them once here in Tulsa Oklahoma 1977-78. Opening band was...wait for it... I don't remember🤔 seriously!!! They blew the roof off. So good the lead band lost it's allure. Due to audience demand they did an encore! Next day finding a Car's albums turned into scavenger hunt!! Candy-O-💘🚘 music to date by!! Still ❤️ & pop em in to this day!! RIP Ric & Ben ✝️
That's so weird there's no record of them in Tulsa at that time, I had a friend who saw them at the Lloyd Noble in Norman, it says they played there in 1987 but there's no way that was the one he saw because he was backstage and open the door and saw a shitload of Elliot Easton Dean's and I'm pretty sure he stopped playing those by 87 but I can't find anything else is no way you can remember maybe the date or something or the Venue?
@@JudasPriest82 Dang you're good. I looked every search possible. Knew ticket stub lost with time. Started questioning myself. Yes they were awesome. I remember the sit up and take notice for everyone. The Assembly Center, I wasn't sure about where. Civic center was another venue. Our son would take our Cars tapes and listen. My name is Cindy so my husband would always say Cindy-O. Thank you for a wonderful memory with now a timestamp. I recently lost my husband Jan 8 this year. We fortunately had 42 years. Back in the day Tulsa had many great bands we saw during those days. The Cars was an all time favorite, especially feeling part of the beginning. That next day though seriously finding an album or cassette was a scavenger hunt. Hearing they have been a sellout today, really was even more alluring. Knowing every one sold more than likely was there and the Cars were going to be big. Thank you so much for the blast. Have a wonderful time in life, your a very kind person!
@@JudasPriest82 Meant to say also I was off on my year. I thought we had seen them before we both graduated. He had, I hadn't. Got it half right. Sorry if that made it harder. Btw how did you finally run into it. You must be a Cars super fan yourself... Obviously. Again thank you! "Let The Good Times Roll"
@Moon Goddess I Googled it as much as I could and then I'd finally just went to a set list website typed in The Cars Oklahoma, they played here more than a few times after the show you went to, and so sorry to hear about your husband that's terrible but kudos to him Cindy O is clever, I'll think of that everytime I listen to that song from now on, I'm only 29 years old and the Cars are my favorite band right now, I'm doing so much research on them it's unbelievable
I loved Ric's voice as well as Ben's voice. I do not have a favorite. Ric was an arty guy and his voice was very arty in its own beautiful way. He is a beautiful person now in a better place.
The day before he died I was driving with my daughter and she asked if I had heard of "The Cars" and asked to play one of their songs over my car stereo. I said of course I know them, I love 80s bands. And then played some more of their music from my playlist. And the next day, RIP.
this biased video was likely another RO promo. If a betting person, I would bet money he produced it and approved every word of it with instructions for date-of-death content to be added upon his passing. THAT is how much of a control freak RO was. btw, that blonde dude sloppily sucking tongue with a girl was NOT Benjamin Orr. It was an actor used for the "Hello Again" video Andy Warhol also appeared. Figured I'd add this obvious fact, as so many are unable to distinguish the absolute and many differences between Orr and Ocasek's voices. The force and direction of all The Cars marketing and promotion was to establish to the viewer that "The Cars and Rick Ocasek are one in the same" and nobody else in the band mattered enough to be promoted. Ric O was savvy and an imaginative writer of some great songs. His biggest talent was self-promotion.
Ric Ocasek lived on North High Street in Columbus Ohio near The Ohio State University Campus in the late 60's and was actually very popular in the small night clubs here! He was a mainstay at The Agora and when he hit the big Time with the Cars it was no real surprise as most of us figured something big was gonna happen for Ric....I'm one of the lucky ones who got to see him Before Fame came a calling!
It's so hard for us to lose our childhood heroes - a piece of you dies with them, really...RIP Ben and Ric. I'll never forget you or the music. Soundtrack of my life.
I was a young teenager in jr. high school when they 1st hit in '78 & I was all over their sound for the next decade...they fit the times perfectly & they knew when to get off of the stage & not milk their fame...great tribute!
I never considered you The Dangerous Type, so I decided- Let's Go for a Drive, as it was Just What I Needed. It's All I Can Do, now Since You're Gone. But when I turned on the radio, it was Magic to feel the Good Times Roll once again. I looked at this surreal situation with Stranger Eyes. The music fully enveloped me while cruising down the highway, it was like Moving In Stereo, but my Emotion In Motion still made it Touch and Go. You Might Think, I am All Mixed Up, but right now, You're All I've Got Tonight, so I just want to Shake It Up one last time before saying to you- Bye Bye Love. :( :(
Mark W. That's so cool what you did, but you should have added it as, but my "Emotion In Motion" still made it Touch...etc.... that song is Rics though, you have all Cars songs, I get it, I just added it to my playlist last week! What a beautiful melody! Rock on Ric!,
@@thomasschuldaski9968 You are so right Pal! Great idea! That would fit in perfectly. Will change it now as a matter of fact. Thanks for the great tip! :)
Being an obscure awkward kid in the 80's the Cars and Ric Ocasek played music that I could escape to and take a reprieve from the self doubt and victim of scorn from my fellow classmates. Thank You Ric Ocasek.
@Alan Brown Lots of songwriters are not the frontmen though I would say Ric was A frontman. Ben was usually the one who was front and center in the live set up, even when he wasn't singing lead. Ben sang enough songs to be a co-frontman and frankly he was better at it and more than that he really enjoyed performing, unlike Ric who didn't particularly like playing live and esp didn't like touring.
I remember being very sad when I heard they had broken up. The Cars, 10cc and Steely Dan were all favorites of mine... however the the list of bands and musicians I like is enormous!
I'm one of many who fell into the trap of not telling ben and ric's vocals apart at times. back then the only 2 songs I only tell was drive and it's all I can do. ric has a bit more of punk sounding vocal while ben does sound close to ric in lower vocal range.
The band were one of the greatest bands of the late 70's/early 80's but the style and sheen that the band put towards all of theirs songs make them sounding as fresh today, as when they first came out!
RIP Ric Ocasek
Shake it up. !!!!

Too difficult to bring that studio sound back in the day and even in the 87’ Door to Door with Strap Me in or Double Trouble was a tough sound to bring with Eastons solos had no edge live imo .
His solo in Shake It Up is awesomely perfect. It helps make the song!
Exactly. And he could enhance a lesser Cars song like Touch and Go with a fantastic solo.
Who plays the guitar solo in My Best Friend's Girl? Is that Elliot as well? That solo is KILLER!
@@MonkyMonk729, Yup. That was E.E.
I had the opportunity to ask him, and I recall, he played it on a heavily eq'd Les Paul.
losing Eddy Money and Ric Ocasik almost in the same breath was a hard blow to me. These guys were magically cool on stage and they made me feel like I was cool.
What?! Not Eddie too! How did I miss that? "I Wanna Go Back" indeed.
If I could walk on water 💦
Yes, both Icons of the late 70's - mid 80's.
If you like The Cars and Eddie Money...you are cool. 👍
and we're next...
This band deserves a true and official documentary
Thanks for the great songs Ric. I disagree with when the dude in this video says its hard to distinguish between Ric's voice and Ben's. They in my opinion are very different and easily distinguishable.
thetubedude2011 at first I didn’t know Ben Orr was a singer. But hey I was a young kid. I figured it out in my late teens, when we finally got cable tv/ MTV. I can easily tell the difference now.
Great tribute. RIP Ric and Benjamin
I grew up with these guys and always reminds me of the good old days and being young. Miss those days.
God bless them.
@savage 069 ..... Yes, I agree with you 100%. Will miss those days.
I always felt the Cars were underrated. Loved em.
Almost every 80s band took their sound from the Cars.
@Rusell Shaw I know what Anarch means. They should have been much, much bigger. But that probably would have ruined it for us true fans
John S I think their downside was that, even though they made great records, from what I hear, they weren’t really a great live band.
Ric & Ben harmonized amazingly together. 2 great singers & The Cars , 1 great band. 🎸 on in Heaven.
Well said, Eddie $ passed too 😔
@@the4bidden142 He took 1 🎟 to Paradise , left the other for Ric.
Oh brother someone always has to ruin it all by bringing in religious bs. This is supposed to be memorabilia for Rick Ocasek, nobody here wants to read about him heading for internal torment over his beliefs that are nobody's business anyway. Keep that crap to yourself!!
Benjamin Orr
@@davidellis5141 I told that comment to coworkers today, 👍
I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard "Just what I needed". The Cars were one of my favorites indeed.
That's their best song, my opinion 😎👍👌
That song changed everything.
Oh please. If not for MTV you wouldn't have any idea. They're voices were virtually identical.
I extracted Ben Orr’s songs from every album and made a kick ass play list. Different band when Ben is singing.
Great idea!! I may steal that from you!!
Yes Rick O wrote the hard songs for Ben. He admitted that.
Ben Orr on vocals is some of the best post punk new wave music I’ve heard.
Rick on vocals would lower your IQ. He sang his worst written songs.
LMAO !
Alan Brown - Shake it up?
Love Ben Orr. His voices sexy and strong.
Ben Orr was the shit. Love this band 👍
The Cars are still one of the most important and great bands in rock... they managed to do something extraordinary to make pop rock music that was excellent and memorable. I remember I was in high school when they got really big and they changed everything... hard rock, new wave and pop all together in a classy way
I remember seeing Benjamin Orr when I was a kid. I saw him at a boat show in Boston, he had a beautiful blond on each arm!
I will miss you both RIP Rick and Benjamin
I'm youth is slowly fading away..
Don't forget Eddie $, not as cool, but still...
Still both were talented human beings
I loved The Cars, they were a shining star in the muddle that was the 80's, Disco, Metal, New Wave, Rock all looking for relevance. The Cars rose above the chafe with a unique sound and great tunes. RIP Ric, you and Ben can rock out for eternity.
Ben Orr WAS the voice imho.
Until you really think about it they had A LOT of singles!!! Extremely unique, talented and versatile band.
Loved the cars since 83 & I’m 42 years old now. I can’t remember a time when a cars song wasn’t fresh in my mind... much love & respect to Ric, Rest In Peace to one of the most underrated & best song writers I know.
I think I’ve enjoyed reading the comments as much as the video. It’s really awesome reading everybody’s stories about The Cars
Gina Bayer this is where we all get together to share our stories and memories The Cars made for us. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL Cars Fans.
VAL13C I saw Benjamin Orr just before he passed away when he was in a band called Big People
Gina Bayer that’s awesome. I don’t recall as a young kid The Cars coming to Phoenix Az. But I can see my self pogo dancing in the crowd to Cars music. Im a straight Male, but I always thought Ben Orr was a handsome dude. I envy his hair. Lol!!
Gina Bayer I’m now looking up the band Big People. Thanks for that info. I didn’t know about that.
C'mon , Any true fan knew there was 2 singers. RIP #ricocasek#benjaminorr Now they can ROCK heaven
I loved Ric Ocasek,RIP!
RIP Benjamin Orr the real front man of the cars. 🤘✌️🏴☠️🇦🇺
RIP Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr - you were magical.
That debut album os still one of the greatest 1st albums of all time. Its like a greatest hits album.
Benjamin Orr was the Cars
At the 56 second mark: "Casual listeners might not have realized there were two lead singers because their voices are rather tough to distinguish from each other". Say what? Their voices are nothing alike. If you likened to Van Halen, Ric is more about style and delivery ala David Lee Roth while Ben had the better voice, like Sammy Haggar. Of course the great part for Cars fans is that you didn't have to choose one or the other as you had both! RIP to both Cars lead singers.
Godspeed on your cosmic journey Ric, Let The Good Times Roll and don't forget to let them brush your rock and roll hair.
Mr. Ocasek u are one of the reason why my childhood was fun. RIP Sir !
"Its Orangey Sky...

@@kylerinaldi8362 My Orr fave is All Mixed Up
@JJ Scott Look up the official lyrics. You're WRONG.
Ive been heartbroken since news...the cars is the soundtrack of my youth

When it was truly a music video channel. I want my (old school) MTV!
That's beautiful , I didn't have a lot growing up, I guess I was surprised as well?
I remember driving my 73 Trans Am through La Jolla listening to Let The Good Times Roll. Riding Shotgun? Kurt Vonnegut.

Rest In Peace Benjamin Orr, the smooth vocalist , great bass player and humble 2nd frontman. Yes that's your face and what a handsome face it is!
Ben Orr was the voice of the Cars!
Very well said!
RIP, Ric, I will forever love The Cars and you.
Thank you Ric for the music and memories RIP 💔

That's so weird there's no record of them in Tulsa at that time, I had a friend who saw them at the Lloyd Noble in Norman, it says they played there in 1987 but there's no way that was the one he saw because he was backstage and open the door and saw a shitload of Elliot Easton Dean's and I'm pretty sure he stopped playing those by 87 but I can't find anything else is no way you can remember maybe the date or something or the Venue?
I finally found it you saw them August 9th 1979 at the Tulsa Assembly Center, damn you're lucky how many people can say they saw the Cars in the 70s

Dang you're good. @Adam Clark that's true.
this biased video was likely another RO promo.

Voices were similar !! Orr was miles ahead as a frontman
