Ive always liked the choice to have Stacy and Rat in the enormous chairs, emphasizing that they really are just kids trying to figure out becoming adults.
Absolutely. I always remember how this first date scene was made so awkward by those chairs. It works semi-unconsciously. In a sort of similar way how Damone tells him to play side one of Led Zeppelin 4 and he ends up screwing it up by playing Kashmir which is on Physical Graffiti
MsLuvmusic81 Sure was. Beaver was stuck in the Bowl and Eddie was being Eddie and making wise cracks about Beaver saying something like “Some stupid kid got caught in the Soup Bowl” he turned around and Beavers parents were there and he said something like. “Some poor unfortunate child got caught in the Soup Bowl” Typical Eddie. It might have been a cup but i remember this episode l.
Watched this movie for like the 100th time last Friday. Finally focused on the tv and realized it’s an episode of Leave it to Beaver that Damone is watching. Today(5 days later) I’m channel surfing and Leave it to Beaver is on. It’s that same episode called In the Soup. Definitely a weird coincidence. 😂
The scene cracks me up every time. The music when their done eating. How small and scrawny Mark looks in the huge chair. Brian Backer played that part perfectly
If you went to high school back when this film was released, like myself, we had a Dumone, Rat, Stacey, etc in our school. When I look back on those days and think about what classmates of mine could have played these characters, I smile fondly.
Mike Dimone is not a good friend. Not many people pick up on this but when Rat and Stacy leave the restaurant she thanks him but then says, " I'm just sorry your radio got stolen and that I never would have thought that could happen at such a fancy restaurant. Dimone stole it for his troubles 😆
I am the friend who does a perfect impression of Mike Damone... and you love it every time. But I still come through for you in the end. "Got any Iced Tea?"
One thing I never understood about this scene is why he wasnt just honest. If he said "hey sorry but I forgot my wallet, someone is bringing it over," literally no one wouldve cared lol.
Because the character of Mark Ratner was shy, awkward, insecure (with women) and totally inexperienced. He had no idea how to handle anything, and over-analyzed a lot.
This reminds me of the first time I went on a date to a nice restaurant. I was a teenager. When you walk in you follow the waiter and it's polite to let the girl walk in front of you and you walk behind. Then the waiter pulls out a chair for the lady to sit and the man pulls out his own chair and sits down. That's how it's supposed to be done. But with me, I walked in ahead of the girl directly behind the waiter. He pulls out the chair and I sit down and say thank you and my date had to pull out her own chair to sit down. I didn't realize my error until years later and it's made me laugh ever since.
OMG I once had an incident like this happen to me. One time I took my family out to dinner at an Outback Steakhouse restaurant and I realized I forgot my wallet. Once the bill came I noticed that my wallet was not in my purse. At least my dad and I were able to quickly go back to the house and get my wallet and return to the restaurant to pay the bill. Luckily my mom and sisters stayed at the restaurant to wait for my dad and me and pay the waiter for our dinner. Since then I never pulled another Mark Ratner incident like this again. That's why I always make sure to have my wallet with me at all times.
Damone has always been an asshole. He could've subtly slipped the wallet without mention right when he got there, but decided to make it a point that he was giving Rat his wallet. Not ferda.
I mean, yeah the movie itself is definitely too awkward to watch with your parents but it was probably on cable TV all the time and maybe he misses his dad. We gotta be nice :)
Amazing film! A couple of things though- 1) This was before the days of "Free Refills". I grew up in the I remember free refills starting in the early 90s at fast food joints in southern California. So Rat is paying for those two drinks they abandon! 2) Was Rat really carrying around money for a payphone, but not his wallet? 3) WHAT THE FU¢K WERE THEY EATING?! Seriously, not one single item on those plates looks edible including the exploding garbage Damone ate when he showed up at the table.
Rat didn't need any more than a dime to make that call. as for the food, they both ordered knockwurst (German sausage) and that's usually served with sauerkraut and potatoes.. that's what we see on the main plates.. in that metal "wheel", I think I see some green beans, sliced beets, etc.. can't make out the rest of that slop.
He's a shallow prick...he uses Rat's insecurities to make himself feel more self- confident..like he has it all together, he's got all the answers. He's a typical douche-bag type of friend, bullshitting his way through life, never owning up for his mistakes.
That's just it- Damone isn't a cool kid at his school. As Rat points out later in the movie, all the kids pretty much thought he was an idiot. And Damone knows it too. He also knows Rat is about the only guy willing to put up with his bullshit and still be his friend.
This choice of restaurant was an odd pick for a couple of teenagers.. Judging by the waitress' uniform, I'm guessing a Dutch or German restaurant.. Interesting nonetheless..

Eeeeezzzz, I'm really kinda busy Rat. Great line to use on friends when they ask for things.
Very Handy 👍👌😉 even the look he does with the phone sell it like that 😂

My favorite line!🤣
This scene with Damone literally pops in my head every time someone asks me to do something outside of my comfort zone.
What does Mike take a bite of from their table ?
Lol definitely! I can empathize with Damone so well here

one of the greatest scenes of all time. shoutout mike man.
I'm laughing at whatever it is that Damone bit into that squirted and made him have to grab the water.
We've been trying to find out for 35 years what the hell that was....
LOL!!! million $$ question
Probably an eye ball.
Broiled German Shepard testicle
Most people agree that it's a pickled cherry pepper, considering it's a German restaurant
I remember a restaurant like that from back in the day. The candles and dim lighting, I sure there was a salad bar in there somewhere.
New Jersey?

I find it funny how the chairs are so big compared to those 2 😂😂
Yes! I was just saying that to my boyfriend when we were watching it last night it's so comical the size of the chairs.
my favorite scene one of them the date . They tore up that food 😋😋
One of my favorite quotes ... "I'm really kinda busy, Rat" with the Beaver in the coffee cup!
The scene cracks me up every time. The music when their done eating. How small and scrawny Mark looks in the huge chair. Brian Backer played that part perfectly
It's funny when Mike says " I'm really kind of busy Rat" as he has his feet up, drinking out of a milk carton, and watching Leave it to Beaver.
Lol we've all been there, when you just want to chill and you try to make up some bullshit to not have to leave the house.
“I come for the strudel, it’s great”
Great film.
I'm kinda busy rat. All Mike is doing is watching TV.
He’s watching “Leave it to Beaver”
I love how comically large their chairs are.
Mike is always layed back playing it 😎
The music as you see the food carnage and the placement of the bill! LOLOLOL

What the hell does Damone bite into at 1:30?
Probably an eye ball.
I was thinking a small tomato
Cherry pepper lol

@@lukemccardle2379 Really? You'd find cherry peppers at a German restaurant? Seems like more of an Italian thing.

Quite realistic how nervous Rat was and he didn't wanna mess it up. Stacy was really cute and the perfect girlfriend.

Mike watching the most memorable episode of LITB. When Beaver climbs in the cup of soup billboard.

Textbook definition of Blue Falcon.
Getting refills at a sit down restaurant has never been the same since this scene.
What happened? I was too busy watching the Beaver climb into that bowl of soup on the billboard.
I forgot about those tiny red straws in the classy restaurants
What was the song playing in his car before they got to the restaurant
"Kashmir" By Led Zeppelin.
Kashmir is NOT on Led Zeppelin IV. Kashmir is on the Physical Graffiti album.
