What??!! What are you talking about he arrived late the first time he met Mr.Hand? Spicolli even says "Sorry I'm late, it's like this new schedule is confusing."
Kids tend to respect adults that don’t let them get away with BS. it may piss em off at first and they might throw a fit but they’ll still respect them and it’ll make ‘em grow up a little. The same cannot be said for people that just let them walk all over them.
Mr. Hand was actually a better teacher than what we have in the system now despite his strictness. He actually seemed concerned about where his students were headed in life.
The hard part of this - was keeping it up year after year after year. When I was working for the City Schools as a Tutor (I got paid minimum wage and was only allowed to work 30 hours a week - as any more and I would get benefits - which wasn't going to happen) there were three kinds of teachers. 1) Those who couldn't get a job doing anything else - for whatever reason. 2) Those who came in with all kinds of ambition and burnt out in a few years. When I was there - they'd all go into selling real estate. 3) The ones who just loved working with those kids. They'd would have done that job for free. They loved the kids and were always the teacher assigned to the extra curricular clubs - that would stay after school with them. They loved those kids and the kids knew that. They'd do anything for those teachers - and they were the best. Unfortunately - there are only so many people like that. .
I grew up thinking Mr. Hand was a jerk but now watching this 20 years later I do not feel that way anymore. If we actually had more teachers with passion and great concern like this in our High School's the system wouldn't be so broke. Teachers that actually gave a damn about where a student was and reprimanding individuals for not doing better.
Me and my siblings and my friend sometimes talk about some of the bad teachers we had in school and some teachers that we thought were bad while we had them but now when we talk about them we praise their methods as adults. I think there two types of bad teachers. One is the type that truly don't know how to teach and don't really care for students' wellness. The other is the teacher that knows his/her stuff but is serious and strict about their curriculum.
True. My junior high school teachers were a like Mr Hand but my high school teachers didn't really gave a damn about teaching. So who paid for it? Me because I had to retake English100 and math 100 classes in college.

I think he can be a caring teacher and still be failing in some ways. Some of the methods he was using were not actually as effective as he thought. He had a tendency to ridicule students, which does not tend to facilitate learning. Also, he used references that would become increasingly unfamiliar to the students of each new generation, which resulted in a lot of his lectures being lost in translation. I could understand if he had trouble adapting his lesson plans because he is only human and keeping up with recent events can be difficult, but he didn't even seem to try.
Sad part is the few Mr Hands that are left, IF they can get away with teaching like this without being fired or shot/beat by a student, are completely ignored by the students they invest in. The lessons are entirely ignored.

Mr. Hand was wrong about the Platt Amendment! He tells his class that the Platt Amendment was "a piece of legislation introduced into Congress by Senator John Platt. It was passed in 1906. This amendment to our Constitution has a profound impact upon all of our daily ..." (He stops because he notices that Spicoli is absent.) The senator's name was Orville H. Platt, not John. The legislation was introduced in 1901. The Platt Amendment was not an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but, rather, to the Cuban Constitution. (It's major impact was to keep European nations away from Cuba and it led to the establishment of Guantanamo Bay.)

No history nerds here? The Platt amendment was an amendment to an army appropriations bill, not the U.S. Constitution. (although, it was in fact written into the constitution of Cuba as a condition for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.) The Platt amendment was introduced by Senator Orville Platt, not John Platt. It was passed in 1901, not 1906.
Actually, the Platt Amendment was introduced by Orville Platt in 1901 and had nothing to do with a Constitutional Amendment but rather the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Cuba after the Spanish-American War.
Dirty Beef Curtains The Platt Amendment of 1901: "On March 2, 1901, the Platt Amendment was passed as part of the 1901 Army Appropriations Bill.[1] It stipulated seven conditions for the withdrawal of United States troops remaining in Cuba at the end of the Spanish-American War, and an eighth condition that Cuba sign a treaty accepting these seven conditions. It defined the terms of Cuban-U.S. relations to essentially be an unequal one of U.S. dominance over Cuba. "
Mr. Hand was a character that cared if his students learned something. Many teachers collecting a government salary have totally checked out. ( they have given up on their students).
"What is this fascination with truancy? What is it that gets inside of your heads? There are some teachers at this school who look the other way at truants. It's a little game you both play. They pretend they don't see you, and you pretend you don't ditch! Now, in the end, who pays the price? YOU!"
WTF! The teacher is giving them all F's and then mocking them for not knowing the Platt Amendment. He then proceeds to incorrectly state that the Platt Amendment amended "Our Constitution". IT DID NOT!!! IT AMENDED THE CUBAN CONSTITUTION NOT THE US CONSTITUTION.

1:59 - I don't miss that sound at all.
Don’t mess with Uncle Martin !
Great teacher! He’s real. None of that social justice 💩.
I love the handshake scene between Spicoli and Mr.Hand at the end of the film! Aloha!
He always looks like he is gonna cry
“Ok” (snap), “bring him in”
Ray Walston was genius 👍
Wait a minute..... there's no birthday party in here! 😂
Great movie.
And I mean....GREAT movie
@Morbo The Annihilator So true, every scene so SPOT ON with 80's high school. An absolute CLASSIC
Actually, the Platt Amendment was introduced by Orville Platt in 1901 and had nothing to do with a Constitutional Amendment but rather the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Cuba after the Spanish-American War.
Your the guy who got the C in the beginning aren't you ? Haha
ringo1029384756 wrong.
Dirty Beef Curtains
The Platt Amendment of 1901:
"On March 2, 1901, the Platt Amendment was passed as part of the 1901 Army Appropriations Bill.[1] It stipulated seven conditions for the withdrawal of United States troops remaining in Cuba at the end of the Spanish-American War, and an eighth condition that Cuba sign a treaty accepting these seven conditions. It defined the terms of Cuban-U.S. relations to essentially be an unequal one of U.S. dominance over Cuba. "
Mr. Hand was the perfect teacher. He and Spicoli were always butting heads, only Spicoli didn't know that
Mr. Hand was a character that cared if his students learned something. Many teachers collecting a government salary have totally checked out. ( they have given up on their students).
We need more teachers like Mr. Hand who takes no crap, respected and makes you the best version of yourself.
"What is this fascination with truancy? What is it that gets inside of your heads? There are some teachers at this school who look the other way at truants. It's a little game you both play. They pretend they don't see you, and you pretend you don't ditch! Now, in the end, who pays the price? YOU!"
Fascination with Truancy..my 3rd album
STDrepository lol I hate people like you ,always correcting to make yourself look smart lol.
ryan49er1 thats not what he's doing, he's not correcting him to sound smart, he's correcting him because he's wrong and mr hand was yelling at the students for getting it wrong
Umm, it's a movie. A fiction movie. Don't mine fiction movies for facts.
***** Thank you....Some people are just buzz kills....no pun with Spicoli
STDrepository There is no more "U.S. Constitution". The Patriot Act and The National Defense Authorization Act voided it. Wake up, schmuck!
