If you're using a bank loan, the builder claims from the bank. If you're building cash, it depends on your payment agreement with the builder. We, for example, will either want the money in stages while we build, or all of it put in a holding account before we start. Other builders might be okay with monthly payments. It really depends on what you agree on

Build only what you can afford & have an extension plan for later additions once the costs of the initial building are paid off.
