When the Apple HomePod came out my initial review was pretty negative They were too expensive and too restricted A few years later the HomePod has slowly improved Siri has gotten smarter, the price has come down a little, and now Apple has made it possible to pair your HomePod with Apple TV for a home theater setup Is it any good?

this looks fun. Gotta try it
So Morrison. What does he really want ? 😂😂😂. Kidding. Big fan 🙌
Good job verified boy
@@cristianotalon8895 no one cares
Have you tried it? How does it sound compare to a $400 soundbar?
Did you try it? I had my heart set out on getting the homepods but now that Apple discontinued them, I don’t know how long they’ll be supported. :(. Sucks cuz I just got a new tv that could use a decent speaker system
Agree 100% with your conclusions. Had a Cambridge Audio 5.1 system that I replaced with two Homepods. Haven’t regretted it once.
I did exactly this as a trial as I had two HomePods and our sound bar died. I thought the sound was really good but I was suspicious that maybe I was just trying to believe it. This confirms it for me. They’re awesome.
I’ve been waiting for this.... now I may get me a pair
Good to hear this! I’m going to pick up a 2nd HomePod and check it out in my media room 😎
Recently I bought one home-pod and I’m in love with that little charm.
I just received mine today and it must say for a smart speaker it is very good !
Damn! You just convinced me to try out the HomePod Pairing with Apple TV.
Me too bro!
I just hooked up my homepods and disconnected an Onkyo 5.1 system with Polk speakers and came to the same conclusion. Its nice to see your video which validates my decision.
Thank you for that great review! I was confused regarding home pod, sound bar and all of that equipment. Your review makes a lot of sense to me and I feel as though a lot of my initial confusion has cleared up.
I just bought one and hooked it up yesterday, now I wish I would have bought a pair.
Very interesting, thanks for the review! And yeah your conclusions make sense. There's a point where even if it's not perfect sound, the gains in convenience are worth it.
I have been wondering why reviewers aren’t doing atmos experience after the update. This video is right on time and perfect person to review in detail. I wish you can capture some copyright free atmos experience to showcase if it actually envelopes or become immersive. Or a different placement of homepod and how much it changes the immersion. Also, i have roku and appletv, elderly folks at home hates apple remote so they love roku. I probably would have to get soundbar for that reason so it works with everything.
Anyways thanks. Glad that i subscribed.
Been running a homepod pair off my apple tv as soon as the home cinema update dropped. Quite happy with it, would be happier if they update it to allow another pair to be run as surrounds.
Two homepods in the front and maybe two or three small ones in the back for surround sound would be amazing
@@Dontworryaboutit23 why? If your using HomePods I think it’s a good chance Apple will enable it
I have 2 HomePods and 2minis and I was hoping for the same thing. That everything would just link all together. I can’t even imagine how amazing that experience would be. At least make the update to have 2 pairs.. aka 4 speakers.
Could be that Bluetooth is the Problem at least. Maybe apple could use a trick but right now they use Bluetooth and this have not enough bandwith for more speakers.
I’m considering replacing my 2 echo studios plus subs with home pods but worried im gonna miss that bass from the separate sub. Any thoughts ?
Yes enjoyed my pair beyond description.
Just picked up a pair for my bedroom TV.
I appreciate this video and your POV; first time viewer of your content. Came across this as I have effectively set in motion the same set up you have. LG CX TV with Apple 4K TV unit and two HomePods. This will replace my 2009 setup -> Pioneer Plasma TV, Pioneer Elite receiver and a Definitive Tech 3.1 speaker set up. I am excited to get all the pieces together later this month...the LG CX TV will be a bit of a wait as it's on backorder. Cheers!
I bought those shelves & they work great.
Well done thanks!
I’m now watching a film everyday with appleTV and HomePods, it’s perfect with Dolby atmos and Dolby vision!
I love my homepods and use them as stereo pair for listening to music
Get the apple tv and play mandolorian. I promise you it sounds like a theatre if you are in a a smaller room
Just ordered those stands.
I have a mini coming, never had the OG version. I am interested in the possibility of pairing with the Apple TV though.
Great video I ma going to buy it
Great convincer
Best Buy frequently has Homepods on sale for $199.99
AD stands for Audio Description. :)
I LOVE MY HOMEPOD. THEY EXIST PRIMARILY FOR MUSIC AND THEY’RE GREAT. WILL ACQUIRE MORE IN THE FURURE. BOUGHT A MINI AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MY SISTER.
Same. I always loved mine. Even though it got so much bashing I got one earlier one before even all the cinema upgrades and airplay for Spotify and such. Yes Siri could be upgraded a lot more but I use this solely for music and I’m super satisfied.
You’re good. Thank you.
i love this man!
I love my Sonos system.
I have this set up the home theatre with the HomePods, and some thing to remember is that this only works with the latest software version 14.2. Most of my time setting up was waiting for the software to update
I had a pair of floor standing Infinity Studio Monitor 122s back in the day 😎
Wow totally agree with this review! Have spent many thousands on good systems over the years but you are right! 90% there with these for the price is great!
Been using mine this way for a couple years. RUclips music videos sound great with these. I find it’s easier to go on the CNN app or free-speech TV app and go to audio settings there and Pare’ the homepods
This dude needs a Sonos arc that thing truly is a game changer.
have you heard the homepods in a pair? curious to difference in sound quality
I replaced my old home theatre audio system with 2 HomePods and the new Apple TV 4K 2021 based on your video. Works beautifully. I’m using my LG C9 OLED TV as an audio switch to route the sound from 3 other HDMI Inputs to Apple TV and HomePods and all is well.
How do you route sound from other inputs to the Apple TV? Desire many videos, I’ve never seen this described anywhere
@@dipeshspatel All HDMI inputs are cabled into the 4 ports on the LG TV, including the Apple TV. The port used for the Apple TV HDMI is the one labelled ARC or eArc, Audio Return Channel, which is also the audio output from the TV. ARC is supported by the TV and the Apple TV so sound from all inputs, and the TV itself get routed to the Apple TV, and then to the HomePod stereo pair. I found one or two other RUclips videos that explained this as well…not sure which ones; it was a long time ago when I first bought my LG TV.
I'm using 2 stereo HomePod pairs on my Apple TV 4K and enabled Dolby Digital 5.1 - it works very well - it's a shame you cannot set more than 1 stereo pair as default speaker (yet)
Must get me one of those too 😍
Nice to have another option. Months ago I moved out so I sold my Onkyo with Atmos paired with a JBL 5.1+2 kit because of space... I read everywhere about those soundbars with Dolby Atmos, if it works I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to a full home theater system again.
Sonos arc is the best Dolby atmos soundbar at the moment.
Was watching some Star Trek on them. Man, I was like wow. I couldn’t believe the sound.
Yeah, I created a HDMI based 7.1 surround system years ago (with tower main speakers and cabinet bi-pole surrounds). For Atmos, I upgraded to a higher end receiver and got 4 ceiling speakers for a total 7.1.4 system. Music has been mixed for 5.1 or 7.1 horizontal 360 surround (SACD or concert DVDs or blu-rays....never mind music tracks in movies). If you are looking for a good budget virtual surround stereo setup, I do wonder if you'd still get great sound quality from a couple cabinet speakers and receiver or source that has a surround DSP. Even old speakers-I have some old Acoustic Research speakers my dad gave me that I restored. They're "bookshelf" speakers I have as my sound system in my bedroom. Bass is very present, and overall quality is very good. My home theater, with big subwoofer, then just adds deep bass that you feel and physical speakers that give you full surround around and on top. I see the HomePod being good at the Apple home echo system and having good audio quality for a simple music device. I'm just wondering that if you're looking for a good enveloping stereo setup, you can get good deals with cabinet speakers (which have been engineered over the decades and you can find real mints buying used).
You seem like a cool dude and i share your view on what you say also in different videos. I thought about this setup and found here what i was looking for. Thank you! The red glasses suit your grey hair btw.
I first realised this was a good idea when I used my paired 2 homepods to jointly play music around my house with my Samsung sound bar in a different room (via an airport express) and the homepods blew the sound bar away. So I switched the homepods to use as speakers for my TV with my Apple TV. Wow was there an improvement, unfortunately I need to keep my homepods where they were so I’m now in the hunt for two more.
This video is spot on with my findings as well. Initially, a stereo pair didn’t sound that great (for movie watching) and now even a single HomePod sounds better than my old Sony HT-Z9F sound bar with satellite speakers. Which costed more than the HomePods. Crazy how apple is giving the people what we want
ikr!
great and informative video! I'm wondering where you got your homepod ledges from..those are so nice!
See his links below the video.
5:10 Not just that but it also has to go through youtube processing and then our devices processing to “hear” what you hear
Thanks for this review. I bought a pair of HomePods and tried them with my LGB7 TV - the resultant sound was not good!. Instead I used them as a pair of stereo speakers for music. I purchased anLG Soundbar with ATMOS support. This has been fair but really don’t get all of what I expected to get with ATMOS. The base from the sub-woofer is impressive. Recently I purchased a pair of AirPodsPro. The sound is much more immersive. Airplay 2 is meant to provide a way of “sharing” sound between speakers. The Soundbar is mounted under the TV and the sub-woofer under a side table. If I place my HomePods beside the lounge facing the TV can I “share” the sound between the SoundBar/sub-woofer and the HomePods? Two people can have AirPodsPro at the same time but don’t know the limits of AirPlay 2 sharing.
Very informative I have just set mine up to my Apple TV 4K and was blown away by the sound compared to my Bose soundbar. Yes I would very much like to be able to make more adjustments to the bass etc. but the soundbar had very few adjustments on it anyway. I would say that you will get more from them if you can place them around 5 to 6 feet apart and about 10 inches away from the wall, so not sure about mounting them on the wall. I think this will be a typical Apple experience and improvements will be made to set up etc. and maybe they will even let us make a few adjustments. By the way you can EQ these if you airplay from and iPhone or iPad but not from the Apple TV at the moment.
I have a pair of Thiel 1.6 but I’m seriously thinking of selling.
Buen precio, util, buen sonido, no recalienta, muy util, sencillo de usar
I totally agree, the HomePods are awesome! I use them with my Apple TV 4K as well and they are superb! FYI, I bought my HomePods from Best Buy @ $199.00. They have them on sale quite often, so watch for them if you want a super deal.. At $199.00, they are without a doubt a GREAT deal and purchase... When I did my setup, I found that I had to have my Apple TV & HomePods ALL in the same “room” within the Apple Home App. When they are in different “room’s”, I couldn’t get things to work. I discovered this when I called into Apple for support (possibly resolved now). Great video, thanks!
Just set up two HomePods. I am happy with the sound. I use them as an option so that I can still ask Siri to play music with out the Apple TV
Homepods also go on sale all the time usually for $200 or less. Meaning the whole setup can cost just under $600.
Where can I get one for 200 😌
I have a pair connected with my Apple TV and they sound amazing but I was disappointed to realize that it lose Dolby Atmos signal from Disney plus and Tidal. The badge disappeared from Disney plus and a red bar shows no Dolby atmos music support when setting homepods as a default speakers and when I switch back to my C9 speakers they get the support back. I guess they might solve this problem with future updates. As for now. I believe Sonos Arc offers a similar experience and you can connect other devices to it, just keeping the homepods around bc I love listening music on them.
Apparently the Sonos ARC soundbar is very good I wonder how they compare with this duo
I tried the LG soundbar as well it sucked. Currently I’m using the Vizio Soundbar and it sounds much better. I might try Homepod as my second setup and see how it compares.
I’m buying some home pods!!!! Great video. Thank you. Exactly what I needed to hear.
I was also looking all over the web to see if the minis would perform this same task. Thanks to your video, I now know they will not.
You got yourself a like and a subscribe my friend!
Any chance of you trying this same setup with the HomePod Minis? Love this video.
The minis don’t support Dolby Atmos functionality.
I had a bose 700 sound bar complete set up. Sounds insane for what I use it for.
I have a guest bedroom where I had the home pod already just to play music. I tried getting another one to play movies etc.
Honestly I was impressed. It sounded so much better than just the one did for music. Paired up together for movies I was honestly pretty blown away. Just need to get stands now but they do the job just fine and don’t take much space.
Hi, I also had the bose 300 full set up, and sold it for getting the sonos arc full set up. I was happy with the Bose actually but thought of trying atmos ;) but if the two pods are close to the Bose set up, maybe it is a side step and save up some money ;) how do they compare to the Bose in terms of movies. for music i have a separate stereo. thanks for the feedback.
I sold my Bose 300 full set to get the ARC as full set as well. I am in the waiting line. Now seeing the good reviews on the HomePods with Virtual sound ... maybe worth getting the homepods and save the money ;) curious to the reply
Does a stand make a difference?
I just bought an Apple TV 4K specifically for being able to utilize my HomePods as theater speakers. I am super impressed.
Can you put them like next to your couch instead of next to your tv ? would it sound as good ?
I tried the Samsung Q900t and it’s a great soundbar, I just need one more HomePod to try the atmos
I just bought it.. Shipping right now.
How's it with Satellite speakers?
@@pripri5998 I think the q950 is the one with rears? I don’t have it.
For me, ATMOS didn’t hit my radar until 3 months ago. Had I known what it was back when HomePod was first released I would have bought two
I think the main thing you missed talking about was how I believe they only work with sound from your Apple TV. So it’s not really a replacement as that PS4 of yours will now be playing through your TV Speakers unlike with your proper setup.
I got a vizo sound bar with my dad at Walmart for like 100 bucks I got 0 complaints
Makes sense. I stuffed four full-sized HomePod speakers into my bedroom because stereo isn't surround enough. They impress every time.
Do they all work as a unit with your TV? Or do you have to have them split up as two separate pairs in homekit and connect both pairs?
You should have them at least 6 inches from the wall.
HomePod minis do work with Apple TV but can’t do Atmos.
Apple had $100 gift certificate during Black Friday for each HomePod purchased.
What did you use to mount the homepods? Great video.
Strange place to mount them Jason ...
I’m more worried about the placement of the ps4 underneath the HomePod. I have a HomePod & the bass is big & spectacular, but i feel like that bass might mess with the ps4 HDD and disc drive.
Is there a way to connect a sub to this set up? Thanks for the video! Extremely informative!
I'm enjoying them. I'm not spending thousands of dollars on a home theatre system when I can get most of what I want with two Home Pods and a 4 K Apple TV. Now, I can really only do them justice and turn them way up when the better half goes out to do her errands, but that me time is rewarding.
Thanks for the review. I’m getting there. In the meantime you mentioned that you put a link here for those shelves you found on Amazon but I can’t seem to find it. Could you repost plea se? Thanks in advance.
We have a Sonos Beam and 2 @ (old) Play:1’s. They set up isn’t Dolby Atmos capable. I’ve been contemplating the Sonos Arc. It’s a few bucks for sure. Gulp. So I’ve been considering a second HomePod as a alternative. Appreciate the insight.
Your tv screen looks amazing! What’s that tv called ?
LG C9 OLED
I just got a new HomePod a month ago and I am not planning to get another one to stereo pair anytime soon. Glad to have this Home Theater option with Apple TV 4K now. But right now I am away from my Apple TV setup and am excited to try HomePod with it when I get back. Simple question: How good is the experience with one HomePod for Dolby Atmos and Home Theatre setup with an Apple TV 4K? Please comment. Here I only see the stereo pair setup stories.
AD is Audio Description - it enables those who are blind or visually impaired to mentally visualize the movie.
I think I might actually do this for my father-in-law next Father’s Day. All the reviews so far seem to be blowing people away for the size and price. You can’t beat $500 for Dolby Atmos support
homepod mini works great as apptel tv just no atmos
Τέλειο βίντεο! Χειροκρότησα με 2,00 € 👏
Thanks for good overview. I just received my Apple TV 4K second generation yesterday. An important fact is that the new Apple TV is shipping with TVos 14.5 installed, not 14.6. Users need to do a software update to 14.6 before eARC works. This slowed me down a bit, but eARC via my LG C9 works beautifully. The LG C9 also needs to be running WebOS 04.80.03 or higher firmware version.
My information about requiring tvOS 14.6 may be an unintentional mistake. When first testing, ARC didn’t work. The first thing I did was update TvOS to 14.6. After that I discovered the Apple TV setting to turn on “ARC from the TV” or words to that effect. That setting may have been there on 14.5 but I missed it.
I'm an Apple guy, but, until they can do at least 5.1 I'll stick with my Sonos Beam and pair of One's in the rear. That set replaced a full system of Def Tech 15" subs and big speakers. It works.
thnx for review. I have a setup with pioneer av receiver and Yamaha speakers for atmos with apple tv and mac - awesome ;) 2 homepods in the kitchen without tv, but they blast well for drum&bass and that stuff music - cooking was never so satisfying ^_^
Setup looks good but one question. Going this route what are you using for speakers when playing that PS4? Just the TV’s built in speakers?
I have this exact same question. all very well having speakers that sound amazing for stuff coming from the Apple TV but what about all the other stuff they TV is used for - including other things attached to HDMI. Your solution just works for AppleTV.
I have heard more good reactions about the HomePod theater setup. I thought Netflix does not support Dolby atmos yet on the Apple TV right? I know Disney plus and Apple TV+ do.
I went from 5.1 surround with ORB’s (awesome sound) and am now hooked on (3 )Apple Mini HomePods.
Stereo paired set and my 3rd mini (center ish) has bass turned down . . . and an Apple AirPort Express which has a stereo mini jack input that runs my Orb SubOne Subwoofer.
And a Apple TV4.
I can Airplay control the volume to all the speakers to tailor the sound balance.
Awesome lossless, spatial, Atmos sound from TV or ipad or iPhone and iMac.
Budget guy, minis are great but would love to do this with a pair of Home Pods.
Question remains is Home Pods gen 1 or gen2?
Glad Apple is getting into the home theatre sound game. Give us EQ and adjustments.
Thanks for being blown away like I was . . . Surround sound seems old school . . .
Could you pair 4 together
I wanted this to work out but with no dedicated center channel it sounds a bit weird to me. Oh well they still sound great in stereo pair for music.
The center got better over time. Interestingly.
Les talk about those giant hand weights on the sub woofer....
This is definitely where I’m headed. One more HomePod and I’m there. Is your room square? My room has a slightly funny shape.
Thanks for another great review! I have a HomePod stereo pair in my den, and they sound fantastic! But I’ve been curious about using another pair as main home theater speakers to replace my current 7.1 setup (which I love) in my 16’ x 24’ dedicated room-I would like to be able to experience Atmos. My question: Are the HomePods only applicable with Apple streaming services? What about when I want to play an actual 4K UHD disc? Is it possible to channel that audio to the HomePods? Thanks again!
I believe you can, if your TV has multiple hdmi inputs and one hdmi has Audio Return Channel. You would need to have blue ray player connected to a regular hdmi input and the Apple TV connected via the hdmi ARC. Then choose to “pass through” the sound. That should send your disk audio back through the HomePods. Should work for gaming systems as well.
Very nice product. Should have been in the market for a long time. Still I think there are many people wanted to buy and use it as a home theater experience with Apple TV. I strongly believe that Apple should re introduce the product with more features with more speakers add on.
Then they can definitely conquer the market.
Try Klipsch 1200
AD is Audio Description I believe . . . I am going to try this though. . .
Hey you also have a Lg c9! So I was wondering what do you set your HDMI Input Audio Format for Apple TV 4K with Homepod? Is it PCM or Bitsream? Which one is better?
It’s possible you are comparing sound from a mp3 to home theatre lossless?
Would this work while watching content on an iPhone? I'm in a little apartment and like to use my iPhone as the source for all my media. I have one homepod and love it! I've passed on getting a second one to set up as a stereo pair a few times because the extra volume seems like an eviction notice waiting to happen lol! This atmos thing intrigues me though. I also have AirPods Pro and am not really blown away by the spatial audio. Yes it's cool that sounds move as you move around, but I don't get the sense of a surround sound experience in my headphones that spatial audio is pitched as (supposedly it's even better on the AirPods Max).
I’m also curious about how the PS4 works with them. I’m very interested in this but I have to many other devices that are already plugging into my home theater setup. I’d like to know what else is connected.
There’s no way to make them work with ps4 (or any other device at all for that matter). It’s only iPhone/MacBook/AppleTV. You can’t even output TV sound to it
You should update this: Mini's can do ATMOS now
Thanks Jason and damm that is going to be expensive. By the why how much does the second HomePod improve the experience compared to one?
I’ve got the 2 HomePods. They sound really good, marginally better than my Sonos play bar with Sonos one surrounds!!! Trouble is, they only work for audio from the Apple TV, Apple Music or airplay... so you can’t listen to any other accessories or even the tv audio (maybe if you have a tv with Apple TV installed?)
@@stevenrobinson4884 thanks how much does 2 improve the sound compared to only one?
A lot! I wouldn’t bother with just the one. Having 2 makes the sound much wider and more precise.
Great video, thanks. Just to be clear, if I want to also use a pair of Homepods as TV speakers only, when I'm not using the AppleTV, will that work? Or just with the AppleTV?
Good question
Does regular stereo HomePod perform better than an actual home theatre ? Please specify the actual output power in watts
