I live in Cali and could give to shits about sleds. I’ve never even seen one in person. But this is good stuff. It looks fun. Everyone knows the best part of winter is watching it on tv in sunny California while drinking a margarita on the beach.
I am Canadian, a lot of teenagers buy a sled before they buy a truck or a car here. I never tried a high performance side by side and I may never get to ride one but it sure looks like fun. I grew up on atv's, and sleds, learned how to wrench on them and did a lot of fun things with them and met a lot of great people along the way.@@sxsoutlaws2666
True story: in 1993 I just got out of college. (Kentucky). Came back home to Minnesota. Sleds were huge at this time period around here. I signed with the Buffalo bills. I spent my signing bonus on a new (carry over) 92 vmax4. It was beautiful. I thought about that sled so much during training camp that they cut me from the team and let me be with my sled forever. And that’s my grand casino story!
That is a very unique sled. Arctic cat had one of the first 4 cylinders:1971 Arctic Cat King Kat 800 which was also pretty badass especially for back then.
Officially clocked at 103 mph in factory testing on grass in 1970. The 1971 King Kat 800 featured the four cylinder free air two stroke Kawasaki with four carbs four tuned pipes and no mufflers. It was an 800 class oval racer. Made one year. Less than 150 built.
So pumped to see you get this sled. I grew up with the guy you got it from and personally know how quality this sled is. Couldn’t be happier with anyone else buying it. Congrats.
Congrats on the find. I still remember as a kid watching Tim Bender on his formula 3 vmax 4 set the lap time at Eganville oval racing. It sounded amazing, there is a RUclips clip of his sled Erving it on the jack stand
My dad had a 1994 VMAX 4 750. It was an amazing sled. We saw it about 15 years after he sold and it was still running with damn near 10,000 miles on it. What a badass sled man Congrats!
Doug, my dad has the exact sled in the shop. 1996 his has 130 original miles on it, yes 130! The running bords aren't even scratched! It looks like he just picked it up at the dealer. Nice sled Doug she will rip!
We were really proud about how passionate you were for your Vmax 4. And love for sleds Thanks for sharing our culture. Signed Michigan people and the Mid-West. Love the sled videos!
Those sound awesome with the quad pipes. PSI offered two sets for the 800`s..one has internal stingers, and the other does not. The ones with no internal stingers, would be the PSI mods. They are lake pipes. The others were the trail version (internal stingers) so they would be quite a bit quieter. Bender also made more than one set of pipes. The quad performance pipes were stamped and the formula III pipes were sectional and welded. Aeen made sectional pipes also but they were a grand back then from what I remember, they were loud but not as loud as the PSI mods. You have to spin the engine at 10k with them and weld the crank pins. The stock 800 ignition box has a 10k rev limiter not sure about the 750 one though. They give around 18hp on the 750 and 15hp on the 800.
Just mentioned that to another recent VMAX 4 owner that he needs a set of quad stingers as there is nothing that sounds that awesome quad pipes just resonate power as they have a rapid fire bark that you can feel like the report of a large firework you can actually feel that there is some serious bite behind their bark
You could tell when one of those sleds was coming, very unique sound with pipes. Clutching from factory was not good, they are thirsty and fairly heavy. They worked best on hardpack on a lake, not something you want to ride all day. They need tweaking and some mods but can be monsters after some work is done. I know a guy who put a garrett turbo on one and put mod pipes on it and it was wicked fast 200+hp. It would twist up a crank if a belt blew. 3 or 4 cylinder 2 strokes with pipes sound the best by far imho. @@robertfrancis6967
If you are to put 800 pipes on a 750 you should really consider welding the cranks. Just adding them pipes and the HP it added for some reason the 750 bottom end didn’t like it. I had 5 Vmaxs over time. My imp stock 800 had a custom gear reduction. These would turn 10,000-10,400 but the clutch couldn’t turn that fast. So the custom gear reduction fixed that and changed power curve. My sled back 20 years ago was making 230Hp full Pat Hauck Engine / clutching and howler pipes. Sled was brand new and turned into a racer from day one. I really miss that sled. 🤦🏻♂️
Vmax 4 is also my favorite, my uncle had one, it's actually how he passed away, in an avalanche before avalanche kits were common. Sled ran fine, needed to be straightened out but sadly it moved out of the family and I haven't been able to track it or even another down yet now that I have a garage
Nice Vmax4. I have a '93. The engine is more or less two RD350LC motorcycle engines joined together....basically the same thing they did to create the legendary TZ750 motorcycle engine.
Killer sled Doug! I learned to ride on a V-Max 4 in the Utah mountains. Brings back memories seeing one again. The Yamaha RX-1 was another fun one to own.
I was just thinking about you guys when I saw an add for the sale of a vintage muscle sled collection. Multiple v max 800’s srx 700’s, Mach z’s. Thunder cat 900 and 1000’s plus more.
Really wishing I never got rid of my 92 vmax-4 750..Had the quad 4 psi pipes that were heat wrapped, clutched, mild porting .Was originally owned back in the day by the fellow that started Collet communicators..Those helmet communicators..
I bought a 96 Vmax 4 brand new from the dealer - I absolutely loved it ! I wish I’d waited for 97 tho cause it had the pro action rear suspension and the hydraulic brake . The only complaint I had about my Vmax 4 is that the oem ski skins are way too thin and don’t last . That’s it :)
being in the sand dunes, the filter won’t get dusty. It’s when you get in the dusty Rhodes that the dust will make it through a filter especially the canon that’s why they have to be oil charged but then if you get crazy you fill your intake full of oil, and that causes a ton of problems sticky throttle blades, core idle ,stalls. You should get a pre-filter. It’s just a wrap covers your existing filter.
I had a 94 750...loved it i was on pit crew with yamaha racing for grass and ice drags.....and i dont know if you know the legend pat hauck but we raced against him
Take out the front axels. Parasitic load or parasitic loss may refer to. in internal combustion engines, it refers to devices that take energy from the engine in order to enhance the engine's ability to create more energy or convert energy to motion.
I never knew those Vmax-4 sleds were so rare. I Alway kinda wanted one. My friend found one in 2006 a red one and it only had like 300kms here in Canada. It was the same as brand new. I remember one night in my garage he was putting a stinger muffin that he bought that was custom build of a race v4. It didn’t fit through the belly pan of his sled because the sled it was built to fit had a bent chassis. Well let’s just say I gave him the grinder to cut that hole. I personally couldn’t do it.
Looks like the same unit that was on Facebook market last week for around $2500, Illinois area. Really thought of Doug when I seen it. Was very clean looking.

Same here

You my new favorite ex NFL player
You can't beat the 1990's muscles sleds what a time it was seeing them on the trails when they were new.
So True. There was a ton of muscle in the 90s. I have a 94 Arcticcat 700ZR. It’s quick and fast
Lol. Got a 1997 and 1995 sitting in my garage. And know where there's another sitting outside needing a home.

Love me a Vmax 4. Bender pipes rock! Hauck big bore 905! Rock n roll! Made a mountain sled out of one!
Sick sled Doug! 90s muscle sleds rule. I always love the sled content. 👍

Good For You Doug, you got your dream sled!! I want a 99' ThunderCat 1000!! Some day, doing the family thing Now!

The aluminum skis look killer polished out. My brother has a 96 600xt with a set of them on it. Completely makes the sled.

I believe an old Dynotech article describes that the stock 750 pipes were an improvement on the 800 engine
I had a 1994 vmax 4 with four bender pipe with a stinger on each pipe that thing went 210 km on a lake does not stop on a dime
I had one, same colors and everything identical loved it. Halifax Nova Scotia Canada
Looks like Steve’s water skipper is really close.
Rail extensions on there I see…..
Sure hope we see some trial runs on it before ice
I don't know if I'll have it done in time for water, but I'll have it out in the snow for some wheelies
