I'd say two tips are 1) Make any words you can even if they're small. Finding a small word can sometimes help you spot a larger one 2) Notice common prefixes and suffixes and see if the remaining letters can form a base word to use with it
Be older People who're good at words just know a LOT of words Kids are always very good at numbers, they have to be as they cannot match the adults' vocabulary
This is episode 4413 as of Friday 10th August 2007 in Series 57 and the original episode 4268 was as of the 3rd quarter-final in the Champions of Champions XII. Also this is the halfway episode of Series 70 Champion: Mark Murray.
In the letters round at 8:30, I'd have been really shocked if you'd declared the _other_ 8-letter word that was available: CATENOID. (It's a figure from topology that sort of looks like an inverted torus.) In the first numbers round, what I thought was the intuitive solution was this one: 100 x 6 = 600 10 x 9 = 90 90 - 10 - 2 = 78 600 - 78 = 522 There were also valid solutions based on factoring the target, which is divisible both by 6 and 9. The 9 is the easiest: 10 x 6 = 60 60 - 2 = 58 58 x 9 = 522 The 6 is a bit more complex, but it's easier to find if you're looking for it: 10 + 10 + 2 = 22 22 - 9 = 13 100 - 13 = 87 87 x 6 = 522 There's also a trick shot answer, but it's basically the same as the solution based on dividing by 9: 100 x 6 = 600 10 x 2 = 20 600 - 20 = 580 580 x 9 = 5220 5220 / 10 = 522 Frankly, I was surprised that Katie couldn't get the second round numbers puzzle. It was easy. Because of the low numbers, there were precious few meaningful alternatives, but I did strike upon one: 75 + 10 = 85 85 x 2 = 170 170 + 4 = 174 174 x 3 = 522 522 + 1 = 523
I got 522 = ((10 × 6) - 2) × 9 If exponents were allowed, 243 = 3^5 If not, 243 = (100 - (5 × 2) - 9) × 3 523 I got the same way as Bradley, albeit much longer. I had to pause the video on all of them.
Non native English speaker here. We had this tv quiz format in in my country when I was a kid and I stumbled upon 8 out of 10 cats on youtube. I recognized it and went down the rabbit hole. I ended up here and I was quite surprised they let an adult compete against a kid. "How is that fair lol?" ... Boy, was I wrong. Well done. I don't know if you will read this but just out of curiousity, did you pursue any career path or likewise with your talents?
In Round 13, if a champion has a lead sufficient to win already if lose numbers and conundrum, would it be permissible for the champion on his or her letters turn to select 9 consonants, to ensure no one scores on that round, and secure the win?
Bit odd that the nicest thing des could come up with to say to a countdown contestant was to compliment her smile
The intro too. What more could a man want? An attractive woman who goes to the pub and decorates...
He's a bit old-fashioned but I thought the way he treated Bradley throughout was very sweet and fatherly.
Anybody have tips for the letters game, I suck at it but I always crack the number in ten seconds

This is Episode 4421 and the original 4268 was on Wednesday 31st May 2006 in the 3rd premilinary of the Champions of Champions XII.
Episode 4414 and Episode 4268 was on 9th June 2006.
What are you doing now Bradley? Just came across your 1.5m vid, hope you're all good!
In the letters round at 8:30, I'd have been really shocked if you'd declared the _other_ 8-letter word that was available: CATENOID. (It's a figure from topology that sort of looks like an inverted torus.)
In the first numbers round, what I thought was the intuitive solution was this one:
100 x 6 = 600
10 x 9 = 90
90 - 10 - 2 = 78
600 - 78 = 522
There were also valid solutions based on factoring the target, which is divisible both by 6 and 9. The 9 is the easiest:
10 x 6 = 60
60 - 2 = 58
58 x 9 = 522
The 6 is a bit more complex, but it's easier to find if you're looking for it:
10 + 10 + 2 = 22
22 - 9 = 13
100 - 13 = 87
87 x 6 = 522
There's also a trick shot answer, but it's basically the same as the solution based on dividing by 9:
100 x 6 = 600
10 x 2 = 20
600 - 20 = 580
580 x 9 = 5220
5220 / 10 = 522
Frankly, I was surprised that Katie couldn't get the second round numbers puzzle. It was easy.
Because of the low numbers, there were precious few meaningful alternatives, but I did strike upon one:
75 + 10 = 85
85 x 2 = 170
170 + 4 = 174
174 x 3 = 522
522 + 1 = 523
(1999-2020) 21 years old
(100x10)+(9x6)=1054-10=1044÷2=522
100x3=300-(9x6)=246-(5-2)=243
75x(4+3)=525-2=523
Blimey! Fantastic for an 11 year old to finish the game with a score 105
I got 522 = ((10 × 6) - 2) × 9
If exponents were allowed, 243 = 3^5
If not, 243 = (100 - (5 × 2) - 9) × 3
523 I got the same way as Bradley, albeit much longer. I had to pause the video on all of them.
He is now 21!
And now he’s 26!
I did the 522 with the following:
100*6=600
9*10=90
600-90=510
510+10(the other one)+2=522
“It was nearly my countdown” it is now.RIP Des
I got 522 very differently.
100 x 10 = 1000
9 x 6 = 54
54 - 10 = 44
1000 + 44 = 1044
1044 / 2 = 522

Must be embarrassing to finally get your shot on the show only to be beaten by a kid, even if he is a worthy opponent.
Brilliant
1st & 3rd numbers game were too easy. The 2nd one was only off by 3 or 4.
That was one fast Tarantula.

No, you have to choose at least three consonants and vowels each
@@davidhildebrandt7812four consonants minimum, three vowels
