My friends and I accidentally downloaded this film in Italian a decade ago [we all speak English] and didn’t notice until ten minutes into the movie because we thought everyone spoke Latin in the future. It wasn’t even the weirdest thing about the movie.
Nah,you got it wrong.Connery passed on the role of Gandalf because they were gonna shoot the entire trilogy,back to back over the course of 2 years,in New Zealand and he didn't want to be away from home for that long of a time or not be able to work on other movies. He admitted later,that this was a really dumb decision and regrets it deeply.
I'll bet JJ Abrams could make a TV show out of Zardoz with an absolutely awesome first season that then completely falls off a cliff by the end of season 2 :)

It's gotta be an authentic Webley-Fosbery (the very first "semi-automatic" revolver that could also be described as "inertia-operated single-action"). There's at least one scene where Zed is seen cocking it manually because blanks don't produce enough recoil to reciprocate the upper frame (which is what rotates the cylinder and cocks the hammer). That's why he appears to "pump" it. The upper frame (which includes the barrel and could be considered some type of "slide") rides along a track in the lower frame. *Edit/Note:* Oh, and to add to its avant-garde design, it's top-break just like all classic British Webleys (most of which are standard double-action). Indiana Jones had a Webley Mk.VI in "Last Crusade."
Mark comments on why would Zed's group attack the food-growing Brutals, but it is explained in the movie. The farming was actually a recent development and making Zed's group switch from killing to overseeing farming contributes to Zed turning on Zardoz. RIP Sean Connery, you will be missed

I watched this movie when I was 5, I did not get it. I watched it again at 12, I did not get it. I watched it again at 15 and I still could not figure it out. In my mid 20's I watched it again and finally I could follow it. The reason they explain nothing is that terms like nanotechnology, telepathic neuro interphase, light based computer systems, and guided enforced evolution would of been gibberish to the average movie goer so they did not even bother.
What's devious about it is they offer you the weak stuff first. Y'know, "Mary Tyler Moore", "The Jeffersons", "All In The Family", "Sanford and Son". Then, when you're addicted, they break out the heavy stuff like "Zardoz".
He also turned down the role of Morpheus in The Matrix for the same reason. When he saw how big it turned out, he promised to take the next role he didn't understand. That was the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

The thing with the Brutals and their treatment probably is like what happened in Sparta, full-citizens of the city or true Spartans, those who could dedicate themselves fully to train for war, were relatively very few and that kind of system could only be sustained with a massive, in comparison, population of slaves, so slave revolts were always a huge risk for Sparta, due that their treatment of those slaves was very harsh and full of arbitrary violent actions to keep them under control, for example some kind rite of passage for Spartan young men was for them to wander alone into the villages of those slaves and kill some of them randomly and escape capture. Here the situation is quite similar the Brutals could not threathen the Eternals directly but if they somehow figure out that the Eternals are fake deities and they too few to control them they simply could abandon their servitude and let them starve for the rest of their eternal unlife so they use Zed's people to keep them always subdued with violence often randomly.

When 2020 came along I started watching these post apoc/ dystopian films as training films for the current time. Yes, I like to do comparative Mashup to see which dystopian militia would come out on top.
The first mankinis were worn by actors in the Zardoz film. Their real life descendants are much skimpier, having been made famous fourteen years ago by Sacha Baron Cohen in the Borat movie.

The thing with the Brutals and their treatment probably is like what happened in Sparta, full-citizens of the city or true Spartans, those who could dedicate themselves fully to train for war, were relatively very few and that kind of system could only be sustained with a massive, in comparison, population of slaves, so slave revolts were always a huge risk for Sparta, due that their treatment of those slaves was very harsh and full of arbitrary violent actions to keep them under control, for example some kind rite of passage for Spartan young men was for them to wander alone into the villages of those slaves and kill some of them randomly and escape capture. Here the situation is quite similar the Brutals could not threathen the Eternals directly but if they somehow figure out that the Eternals are fake deities and they too few to control them they simply could abandon their servitude and let them starve for the rest of their eternal unlife so they use Zed's people to keep them always subdued with violence often randomly.

@@phoneboxchicken4108 A quick perusal of Ancient Greek or Roman statues, or any Renaissance art, and you'd know what "natural" looks like. The thing is, "natural" involved working all day (farm, builder, soldier, blacksmith) as opposed to sitting 23 hours and spending 1 hour in the gym.

When 2020 came along I started watching these post apoc/ dystopian films as training films for the current time. Yes, I like to do comparative Mashup to see which dystopian militia would come out on top.
