Leonard Peltier : Murderer or Martyr ? (1987) - The Fifth Estate

- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- Eric Malling reports on the case of Leonard Peltier, a Sioux Ojibway and a member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) serving a life sentence for the murder of two FBI agents in a 1975 skirmish at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Malling examines the FBI's conduct with respect to the American Indian Movement (AIM) in general and Peltier in particular, such as their use of false affidavits to extradite him from Alberta and their suppression of evidence at his trial. Also examined is the extensive media coverage the case had been receiving in the Soviet media. Malling interviews Peltier who claims he was shooting in self defense and doesn't believe his bullets even hit the men who died.
Peltier remains incarcerated at a United States Penitentiary in Florida and is next eligible for parole in 2024.

Regardless of whether he did it or not, Peltier was not given a fair trial. There was not enough evidence to indict. This man was denied his constitutional right to a fair trial. A prime example of our broken justice system.
Different People And you, assuming you’re American, are a useless pawn that doesn’t even understand basic constitutional rights. Read the constitution. Peltier was denied his constitutional rights. If you don’t see this then you are a traitor to your country.
Different People also, putting a gun in someone’s mouth, while generally abominable, is not the same as murder. He’s in jail for murder. Totally unrelated. Ever heard of the presumption of innocence?
They had to shut him up somehow. Thats why they did what they did because if he got out he is an activist and just like all great activists they all get silenced in some way shape or form. And they shut him up and threw away they key just to keep him silenced. The government will lose one day and will have the world to pay for because of all the injustices they make will be known and be brought to justice for the world to see.
He just admitted to shooting at the agents in this very video…
@@Jackmerius_Tacktheritrix5733 he also stated it was self defense, and what about all the Indians who the fbi murdered, who were innocent?
Old school CBC journalism was a beautiful sight to behold. Thank you for posting!
Hey, departing president Joe Biden, on his last day in office, commuted the sentence of Leonard Peltier, Peltier will be serving the remainder of his life sentence at home, so he can receive the proper care for his health issues. This is the best news that we have heard in a while.
Negative!…Sleepy joe gave peltier a sleepy pardon! He should’ve given Leonard a FULL pardon with no strings attached! Instead he gives him a half baked pardon of indefinite house arrest! That means there will always be a self righteous government agent at Peltiers house flexing and shaking him and his family down with an ever present threat of sending him back to prison! Anyone who’s ever done house arrest knows it’s a muthah! Joe should not be half stepping with people’s lives…go big or go home! Peltier is 80 flippin years old…let him go already, he’s payed his time! If I were peltier I would’ve told Mr Biden to either release me in full or stick his double tongue pardon where da sacred South Dakota moon don’t shine!
It’s a sad day when a man like this gets indicted but O.J Simpson and Casey Anthony are acquitted.
Mr Anonymous What in god’s name does the new world order have to do with a wrongful conviction.
So now you understand the “justice” system!!!
Absolutely. But racism is as upper North American as being stuck in traffic.
Sad day? He’s guilty. I don’t care about trial tactics. He admitted it.
@@flipperhansen5600 no he didn't. And even if he did, it was beyond self defense.
International law states that a person cannot face prosecution for defending his home or person from an armed invader and occupier.
Wow excellent Observation!!Greetings !!

Since when does the FBI investigate stolen cowboy boots?!! 4 Native Americans were charged. 2 were acquitted on self defense, 1 had charges dropped but Peltier convicted of double murder. Typical FBI kangaroo court -
Pelteir was a fugitive from Wisconsin and he brought his trouble to the Pine Ridge Reservation. He admitted to shooting the FBI agents. That's why he's not ever getting released. I think people should be praying for his soul instead of his release.
It wasn't about cowboy boots. Turn off the Redford documentary.
Since locals have no jurisdiction on a federal reservation duh

@@swirledworld340As usual people like you don't have a clue as to the big picture and what was really going on here. Go back to sleep.
This is one of the worst injustices in US history. I read the terrific book about the case by Peter Matthiesen, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse. It's way beyond time that Peltier was released and he should get compensation and a huge apology.
Two dead bodies doing their job ? You need FBI agents for stolen boots? Wtf is this cop smoking anyways? Maybe he should go to jail for the 60 murdered natives , because , like he said " Somebody needs to be held accountable".
AMEN.
Dummy up.
That was my first thought. I'd love to know any other time the FBI was deployed over stolen boots.
@@mrbobawesomelook at him now
He didn't kill those Federal Officers. His cousin admitted to doing it right before he died. Leonard was a scapegoat because the system wanted him out of the way and it didn't matter that he was innocent. They would have got a conviction of murder even if he had been on vacation in Timbuktu when the murders happened.
What was the name of Peltier's cousin who admitted to killing the officers?
Bob Robideau. He was from northern michigan from Traverce City area. Theres an Odawa rez and and an Ojibwe band but not sure which band hes from I know he was Ojibwe though. Im from the Bay Mills band in the upper peninsula and they used to fish here in Whitefish Bay.
That's man deserves a new and fair trail
Unfortunately they will probably let him die first
Yes he does, but he’s so old, that he will never have a life. Still it would be better for anyone to live their last days at home with family than in jail.
Free Leonard peltier he should never have to live a guilty man in prison you people are terrible I hate the fbi
No, he needs a release
He deserves freedom and reparations. Never trust the federal government. Ruby Ridge said Waco.
The bullets that were used to kill the FBI agent did not match Peltiers gun.
Was he ever released?
@@bbe3034 No. He has been incarcerated for 44 years. He is now 75 and in very bad health. He will most likely die in prison.
an ar 15 and a .308 british rifle yeah?
Watching this is 2020 I can say one thing: it's evident that human beings throughout the course of history seem to be incapable of recognizing their own propaganda but are always ready to point finger at somebody else's. "Fish don't know water exists till beached"

@@TheSnoopindaweb1:15 who is this man
So happy for you Leonard! I've been fighting for your freedom since 1992!
Leonard Peltier (born September 12, 1944) is a Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In 1977, he was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for first-degree murder in the shooting of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents during a 1975 conflict on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Peltier's indictment and conviction have been the subject of much controversy; Amnesty International placed his case under the "Unfair Trials" category of its Annual Report: USA 2010.[2]
Peltier is incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary, Coleman in Florida. Peltier became eligible for parole in 1993; his next scheduled parole hearing will be in July 2024, when Peltier is 79.[3][4] On January 18, 2017, the Office of the Pardon Attorney announced that President Barack Obama had denied Peltier's application for clemency.[5] Peltier can apply again for commutation in 2018.[5] Barring appeals, parole, or presidential clemency, Peltier will remain in prison for the rest of his life.[6]

That Lyn Crooks seems like the kind of guy who, had he lived in South Africa, would also have called Nelson Mandela a thug.
It’s amazing that the Lee Crooks guy seems to believe he has any credibility. Nobody cries “victim” louder than a bully when someone stands up to them. He says “you have two dead bodies, no one seems to care”. You have a lot more than two dead bodies…more like tens of millions.

So you respected Obama even though he murdered thousands of innocent civilians with drones in our illegal war with Afghanistan and Iraq. One guilty Indian matters more to you. Peltier admitted murdering the agents. When he was arrested in Canada he had one of the murdered agents' handgun.

How many innocent people have been executed?
How many innocent people are in prison
The death penalty carries the inherent risk of executing an innocent person. Since 1973, at least 190 people who had been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in the U.S. have been exonerated.Since 1973, the death penalty has been imposed on 228 children under 18 in the United States. Of these, 21 have been executed and 80 still remain on death row. The Supreme Court is currently set to rule on the constitutionality of the juvenile death penalty.

In Pine Ridge the life expectancy us less than 50 years.
In every other place in the US the life expectancy of a human has risen over time.
Why?
Chief Crazy Horse was stabbed in the back when he refused to sign a treaty.

Because the US Army us still embarassed that Custer was a fool.

So did the FBI find the boots ?
Prosecutor Crooks has the perfect name
He just died today... our local news reported it.
In America if you are a part of a group that commits the crime but don't do it yourself you can also be charged with the crime. Some states take it a step further and can charge you with murder even if it's a member of your group dies.
Look at the case of Elizabeth Rodriguez, she wasn't the one who fired the shot or even in the house. She's being charged for 3 counts of first degree murder for being the look out driver. If you are there to knowingly commit a crime and someone gets hurt it doesn't matter if your the one who killed them or not. It just depends on what state you live in.
It's clear the host dislikes Peltier as he chooses to continually mispronounce his sir name intentionally. Tacky and unprofessional.
It isn't a lie, Howl, one of my high school classmates in California is still in prison for just this reason. Brandon Hein (you can Google him).
Minerva - look up felony murder charges. If a person is murdered during the commission of another crime (robbery, etc), all members present can be charged with a felony murder or in some instances capital murder.

Apparently Leonard was there when 2 FBI agents were murdered. So Leonard if it wasnt you, tell everyone who is, besides you were there and must know who did kill both agents.
The FBI should have stayed out of it...
His anger over dead agents greatly overrides his adherence to and the application of truthful and honest justice.
He deserves to spend his life in prison. He had a warrant out for his arrest for attempted murder, that's why he shot the Agents. He's not even from the Pine Ridge Reservation. He was there trying to hide and he's left a blood trail. He doesn't represent the Lakota people, he's using us to help get him out of prison. He's a dangerous man to the Lakota people, he can stay where's he's at.
Do care. Not watching this video. He's still a murderer.
Never proven.
If he was innocent, he certainly took off like a super Guilty murderer. That’s for sure.
