The "soundtrack" is just 3 of the songs off Thom's recent solo album, Anima. Really it's about the music; the film was made an an accompaniment to the album.
it takes a whole new meaning when you take into consideration that not much time ago thom lost his former wife and mother of his children, a person who accompanied him during most of his life. Seeing him so happy after that really though moment it's heartwarming
@@fitterhappier2666 I also thought it was a homage to his wife's passing, then him moving on. This short film really hit me knowing these facts about Thom while watching it. It's so lovely really.
I had a weird experience with Dawn Chorus a while back. (For context I almost always listen to this song when I can't sleep coz it's calming) I was walking into town and it was freezing so I walked through my local Sainsbury's on the way to find warmth for a little while lol. And I had my headphones on listening to anima, noise cancelling on, and it was so strange! Everybody was moving and obviously making noise but I couldn't hear it for the song, and it made me feel as if I was in some sort of lucid dream, extremely bizzare! Sorry this was a little unnecessary and random but it was really weird lol.
Thom was heavily inspired by Carl Jung's theories on sleep psychology when making Anima. Which adds some context to the choreography, especially in the first few minutes.
I like to think of it as a dream sequence. Thom falls asleep on the train and dreams about making a connection with a woman in an otherwise monotonous world of worker drones. He spends the night chasing the woman through a series of dreams and then they meet at the end for the dawn chorus before they return to the train and wake up.
Paul Thomas Anderson has done a handful of great films, There Will Be Blood would be a good starting point, Jonny Greenwood won awards for his score for the film
Man, this is great. I just listen to this album for the first time yesterday and i say this is a great album. Also after this react, dont forget to react to Pablo Honey next, please. Thanks
This is essentially a long music video for the songs on Thom's new solo album. The members of Radiohead have worked with PTA a lot. Also, you should try listening to the first few songs on Atoms For Peace's album. It's a supergroup with Thom Yorke, Flea, and some others.
Paul Thomas Anderson is the greatest director of the last thirty years. Nearly every film is a masterpiece. If you're going the cinephile route..enjoy!
Just an everyday tube ride in the London Underground. Trying to get a pretty woman’s suitcase back to her through a number of elaborate dances Happens all the bloody time!
A small detail to notice in future watches: in many of the scenes there can be cyclops paintings and pictures seen in the background. Also, if you liked the music, it’s actually because it’s from his recent solo album, Anima, which is what the short film was made for; I highly recommend it it’s a really nice album for nighttime haha Also also, if you want to see more Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood and The Phantom Thread are fantastic movies! Those are the only two I’ve seen by him, and I’m itching to see his others (and as I bonus, a lot of PTA’s films have music scores by none other than Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood!).
Guys, you HAVE to check out Paul Thomas Anderson's work, specially There Will Be Blood and The Phantom Thread, wich has such amazing soundtracks made by Jonny Greenwood! my fav is The Phantom Thread's soundtrack tho, i listen to it a lot and always end up crying, it's so beautiful
Paul Thomas Anderson directed 'Magnolia' which is my second favourite film of all time. You must watch that film, it's an absolute masterpiece! Punch-Drunk Love is also one of my favourite films.
If you're into films, you need to see Paul Thomas Anderson's work lol And as others have said: the film was made to complement three of the tracks from the ANIMA album. The album is not the soundtrack to the film.
Thanks for making me aware of this! I really wanna go re-watch it now, I really liked what I saw. Where can I find it? Edit: I think it could be a metaphor for growing up. As a teen/young person, you hate conformity and want to rebel, but at the same time you're being pressured to fit in. When Thom is chasing the box, he's chasing some pie-in-the-sky goal, society holds him back, but then he meets the lady along the way and as you grow older and find a partner in life, you find the value/beauty in the rhythms of society which can only be achieved through conformity. At the end, he's back where he started but his perspective has changed and looks much more peaceful, with the day breaking through the window. Or something.
You should really listen to the song "Twist" from this album! I was surprised it wasnt't in the film cause it's so unique and beautiful and tells it's own story with music
Paul Thomas Anderson is awesome, I would recommend you his films: Phantom Thread, There will be blood, The Master. He also directed music video to Daydreaming by Radiohead, it's great video too :D
For the beginning, his one purpose was to chase the box, but when he was sitting with the scraps flying around which was most likely the box, he lost his purpose. But when the girl came around, he found a new purpose
Ooh if you're just getting into indie/artsie cinema, Paul Thomas Anderson's stuff is great! Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and my personal favourite Inherent Vice are all amazing movies! He's one of the coolest directors working right now. You should check him out.
Nightwalk This ANIMA film was made as the long music video for Thom Yorke's Solo album ANIMA the 3 songs from Thom Yorke's Solo Album you heard in the film are NOT THE NEWS. TRAFFIC and DAWN CHORUS so you must listen and Do a Reaction to Thom Yorke SOLO Album ANIMA Thom Yorke has been doing His Solo Tour for ANIMA album
Thanks for reacting to this!!! I wouldn't call it an "extended music video" it's just a experimental short film based on his new album, like replacing the story with images and music. Hope you like it and get more into Abstract films
Dawn Chorus will always be the best song on this album for me. It feels like a love song, from Thom to Rachel, but, also Thom to Dajana. It's a beautiful transition.
Paul Thomas Anderson is a director who works very closely to Radiohead. He’s done a few other music videos for the band I believe. Jonny Greenwood has also composed for many of his films.
That third sequence was a dream. It never happened. Thom returned to the train and continued on the mundane life. This whole movie short was about a dream. It is something that makes no sense. I really love Dawn Chorus. I remember watching this about 20 times in a row when it came on netflix at 3 in the morning.
You guys have nailed the analysis down to a T for me. I have felt exactly the same about this piece. Who cares what genre and how long it is or how many other explanations it might have. Actually, this is what good art is about, in my opinion. It doesn't serve you a lazy meal on a plate. You don't have to understand it. That's where the pleasure lies. Just let yourself go and feel the connection to you. The more possibilities it offers, the better. Thanks for your video. I have felt connected just as I do with this short music video film that I love.
Love watching your videos and analysises. They're really great. I also recommend reviewing Bojack Horseman. The final episodes just released today and it was AMAZING. And that's 6 whole seasons of content for you, each of which better than the last.
For what it's worth, the "soundtrack" to this short are three songs from his solo album ANIMA from last year. I was lucky enough to be asked to review it for UnderTheRadar magazine at the time and I discussed the short film in that piece too. If you're interested, find it here: www.undertheradarmag.com/reviews/anima_thom_yorke/
Hey man, really enjoy your content. Radiohead are one of my favorite bands. If I could recommend something, check out "Long Season" by the Japanese band Fishmans. It's a 35-minute long album composed of a single song, and it's considered an underground masterpiece. Haven't found many reactions of it, and would love to spread Fishmans music.
I know I'm a year late, but I watched your Radiohead album reactions. If you love Thom's piano songs, I recommend Suspirium and Bloom performance in the Electric Lady Studio. I cried to these songs as I did with Reckoner and Pyramid Song. No need for a reaction video, just enjoy.
I think the Anima film is about social neurosys that holds sway of our everyday life turning us into kind of convulsating somnambulists that are not really self-aware. Brilliant work.
there is a boards of canada song called dawn chorus, i have a hard time (knowing thom's love of electronic music) believing there isnt a connection, especially when you read the lyrics: "We're gonna get ya, we're gonna get ya / Marry me, marry me, marry me / But you may be dead, you may be dead / Mary, Mary, Mary". what i find interesting is the actress in the film is thom's now second wife (gf at the time). his first wife rachel died a few years prior to this work. was this song about letting her memory go? he seems to be questioning starting over or trying again, possibly with his then gf. maybe he was afraid to fall in love again just to watch someone die. these are just thoughts.
Please familiarise yourself with PTAs work haha - There Will Be Blood is one of my fave movie ever and Jonny Greenwood did the score to it which is also incredible!
Hey, you should actually listen to Thom's solo stuff, I love all four of the albums he's released. ANIMA is one of my favourite albums from him and one my favourite albums in general, such a vibe
Big fan of your reaction videos. I definitely think you should react to Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol. One of my favourite albums period. The band is one of my favourites, up there with Queens of The Stone Age and Radiohead
The "soundtrack" is just 3 of the songs off Thom's recent solo album, Anima. Really it's about the music; the film was made an an accompaniment to the album.
@Kenneth Lian Definitely, been watching on flixzone for months myself :D
@Kenneth Lian definitely, have been using flixzone for months myself =)
The comment bots have begun their own modern dance routine. lol
The comment bots have begun their own modern dance routine. lol
The co-starring is Dajana Roncinone, Thom's girlfriend

Dawn Chorus is a masterpiece
Pablo Rivera Literally my favorite song of all time, seriously underrated.
It never really did it for me =/
Ok, Pablo
I had a weird experience with Dawn Chorus a while back. *Dawn Chorus starts playing
[Everybody liked that]
Thom was heavily inspired by Carl Jung's theories on sleep psychology when making Anima. Which adds some context to the choreography, especially in the first few minutes.
It also reminds me of the George Orwell's 1984 movie. It has some aspects of it that I enjoyed.
Phantom Thread, The Master, There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love and Sydney and all great films!
Boogie nights my favorite also love the master and magnolia
Know when someone’s a PTA fan when they call Hard Eight Sydney lol
There Will Be Blood and The Master are must see movies of the last 20 years.
The movie is for the music not the other way around :)
I remember the days when everyone thought A Moon Shaped Pool was gonna be called Dawn Chorus
Wonder if at any point Radiohead wanted to end AMSP with Dawn Chorus instead of True Love Waits
The slow repetitive song in this video “Dawn Chorus” rivals many of Radiohead’s best in my opinion
Paul Thomas Anderson has done a handful of great films, There Will Be Blood would be a good starting point, Jonny Greenwood won awards for his score for the film
Jacob Borg Great score!
Also The Master
thom yorke said that Anima (the album, and the short film) are based off some dreams he had

The choreography in this was made by the same guy who made Suspiria's choreography (the 2018 remake)

Anima was actually recorded in Prague, the capital city of my country. It took me a while to realize that the place was familiar.

You should watch some of Paul Thomas Anderson's films. Johnny Greenwood has done the soundtrack for each one since There Will Be Blood.
You HAVE to hear Thom’s song Suspirium for the movie Suspiria!!
it’s three songs from Thom Yorke’s album Anima! they just created a music video for all three songs
