I am the Justin (Baz) Barratt mentioned in Steven’s book. I went to school with Steven and I was in Paradox and Karma etc. Steven wrote the music and was the lead singer, and we all understood “he was the leader”, exactly as he says. The fact he mentions this in his book is revealing. He understands his need to control, which I believe is mostly his personal desire to achieve what he wants. I don’t think he gets a kick out of controlling people. I am one of the handful of people that Steven has fallen out with. He and I were inseparable for a time, recording noise and silly music at weekends. For him, it was all about the mechanics of recording, the tracks, the overdubbing, the making of a cassette and cover. The music was less important to him, (at least with me, because what I contributed was diabolical and unimaginative.) He dumped me for Simon Vockings and I was really hurt. I hated Steven for a long time. I remember Steven’s mum being wary of me because I was an army-booted, smelly headbanger - a distraction from Steven’s schooling maybe - and Steven was sweet-looking and wore nice clothes. Steven’s parents we’re amazing though: the band rehearsals, all the equipment his dad made, all that nurturing. Well done to them. I really enjoyed Steven’s book! Chapter 5: 10 at least is an honest account of his teenage years. The Marillion first-ever-gig story is true too. To my mind, there are lots of rising stars who claim to be writers, artists, producers, and actors who claim to be co-directors etc, but much of this is PR hype. On the other hand, Steven Wilson is a genuine artist, producer, author, and intellectual. His work will outlive us all.
I personally like some of his stuff.but it sounds all alike to me. I don’t notice any originality. But I do like Coma Divine with porcupine tree and his solo one future bites. I think he’s more suited in the studio as a producer/ mixer. I do think he’s talented.
You say that he couldn’t be bothered to edit the book down from 400 pages. Anyone else notice some irony that this video might have lended itself to some editing, too?
No irony at all. You are mistakenly comparing apples to oranges. I don't edit my videos as they are meant to operate in a purely conversational domain. Sorry...
No trying involved. If you are new here, I’ll explain. All my videos are recorded straight to camera live without a script. Sorry that you somehow see this as “trying”. 🙄
this is very wholesome and real. I don't know if i'm alone but most of SW's catalogue before 2015 just touches my heart very deeply. I think there was certainly a point in his life where he was very charismatic yet neurotic. I kind of resonate very well with that mindset. Early Blackfield albums prove my point further.
@@TheDarrenLock Mind you, this isn't a radical opinion i have. I think big people in society reach a point where things change so much, that they lose touch of their past selves and find it hard to not contradict. Who knows? I think it could be anything in the Wilson brain. He might be lying also, and i wouldn't get upset about this, if i were him, in that position, i would fabricate my words down to the letter to conform to certain stubborn prog fans' mentality. His latest releases with PT tell me that he's utilising over-used modern prog rock clichés (whole-tone scale, hideously long metric phrases, random composition, etc...). Weirdly, some fans think Harridan is in their top 10 songs (ik, lists and yada, yada... i agree) but when i figure out it would make it on the same list as Anesthetise, I really start to wonder, how legitimate the fan-base is... Weird planet, we live on....
I still don't understand the interest of the music of Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson. The remix with King Crimson was worth, but the remix of Yes is a mess
Hello Darren. This is maybe my favorite review you’ve done and not because I agree. Personally don’t think a lot of SW but am more neutral than anything else. He’s hard to get excited about and you were only being honest. Just kinda exhausted 💤 myself personally
@@TheDarrenLock Wow That's ridiculous Whatever happened to the days of just buying the album/ book and that was it. He can't be needing the money surely.
I'm not in the "why did you buy it if you don't like it" camp at all; I appreciate doing a review for something you might not have enjoyed. However: it's more than obvious that you had no respect or appreciation for Steven Wilson and his music at all beforehand, and that makes "reviewing" this book (and I use the term loosely) only a self indulgent exercise in cynical negativity.
@@TheDarrenLock Well, I just couldn't resist the urge to make an assumption that would allow you to make yet another cynical comment. Won't do it again, I promise!
Cynical? Are you kidding. I bought the book in the hope that I would gain some insight into the creative mind and process of Wilson. I came away with all my assumptions confirmed. You love the guy - that's great. Keep it up! One day, you'll realise you've been suckered.
Carry on with your music and publish your book, Darren! I find a bit odd that almost on every interview, or as soon as he gets the opportunity, he remarks his dislike for Genesis. There’s something more lying beneath, isn’t it?
Yeh, not bothered about reading this. After listening to his pod casts, interviews and later solo work, I've gone right off Steven Wilson. He talks a load of rubbish. I'm in my 60s now and been mad about inventive music since around 11 years old. Some of the things he says I think are OK, most are just contradiction or verbal bulls**t. His music, well you've said enough about that and I totally agree with you, it's fake, it doesn't feel honest. I've just gone right off the guy and can't believe a word that comes out his mouth is from his own brain. Thanks for confirming my own thoughts. 👍
I used to be obsessed with porcupine tree in my early 20s, but as i got older i lost interest. It was one of those bands that i felt like i should love, but dont for some reason. I tried getting into them again recently and i just cant. Their music just seems so sterile and lifeless to me and i cant explain why. I listened to a couple of his solo albums and i immediately felt bored. I cant tangibly say why hes awful, but i cant stand him. That said, i like a few porcupine tree albums.
I understand that you don't particularly like his music but you come across as you honestly dislike him , stick to the subject matter not any personal thoughts and it would be better
It's anti progressive rock to be doing a pastiche version of progressive rock and that seems to be his niche. Maybe he should just call it regressive rock?
Early Genesis with Peter Gabriel is everything Steven Wilson would have wanted to be - probably why he is not a fan. They did it all and left him nothing. The bare feet affectation is symbolic - bit silly if playing live and you tread on something painful. Plus he plays PRS guitars which kind of sums it up for me - music without any life in it. Sorry folks.

Is there a limited edition box set version, with a few post cards of minimalist crap?
And it’s reassuringly and stupidly expensive! 👍
