Hi Erick I bought a new 6hp but I was given wrong advice they said it would plane me and my mrs in my quicksilver air deck but it doesn’t do you think the 9.8 will is there a big difference in power thanks stu from uk
Massive difference l, yes. You could also try a smaller pitch propeller. In my case, my 6hp Tohatsu came with a 7.8x8 propeller, but when I installed a 7x8x7 prop, it makes the boat plane quicker and with a person with me. Getting a 9.8hp outboard is a sure thing though.

Hey man, would you be able to make a video 9.8hp vs 6hp of your motors? Pros and cons for both per your needs. I have a 12' saturn and im struggling on picking between the two haha. Thanks!
I bought a 9.8 Tohatsu a few months ago. It has already been in the shop. Carburator problems. Its a brand new outboard. They said that it was manufactoring debris. Do you know if they have steer stops availible for this outboard? Thanks
Oh my! Gosh, both Tohatsu outboards that I own have not given those issues. Maybe it was indeed some factory debris or perhaps a faulty carb. In regards to a Steer Stop, this is the first time me hearing it, so I googled it and I have no clue if they make them or not for this outboard.
I want to use a same setup for intracostal (south east side of FL) but I am not sure how to go pee-pee when there would be so much civilization around. What do you recommend?
Well, I've used mangroves and spoil island. Literally, any piece of land you can find that has very little or no ppl. At times I have gone back to the boat ramp to take care of business.

That was really cool. Espceiallyl going out on the Gulf. I have a Saturn 18' and am looking for an outboard motor. Considering a 15 or 20HP. (I leave this boat on my dock, so no need for portability).
Planning to get that 9.8 Tohatsu . But am wondering how well will it perform on a Saturn or azzuro 330 that hold around 4 people. Not looking for some crazy speed lol but do you believe it will still push at least 8 mph with 4 people? Thx
Hi Erick: Congrats on your new 9.8 outboard. I paired mine with the Achilles LSI360E and it works great for the 3 of us. Thanks for the other oil change and prop swap videos. I will be doing the same soon. Camping on the island looks so nice. I will see if I can convince my wife lol. I was curious, would you happen to know how your friend secured the bimini top on his Achilles? Thanks.
Awesome Erick! Wow, that water did look rough indeed, at least it is beautiful water, not like what we have in N.J. 😩 Hopefully I will be out this summer in the bay areas where the water is calmer. I think I will go with 20 HP Mercury for the Saturn Haylon. Have you ever flipped in this type of boat? I have on jetskis but flipping this motor would be pretty intense I would think. Thanks brother!
Also, would you consider a 20hp in your 10ft? My 6hp is not cutting it for my 10ft either and I’m gonna get a 9.9. Thing is it’s the same weight as a 20 hp, so am tempted. However i do not want to be stupid with the power... likely to have 2.5 people on board
Oh, I see why the 6hp was not enough. It is best suited for one person. Now, if you plan on getting the 9.9 and you can afford the 20, get the 20. You'll be cruising at half throttle most of the time anyway.
If you get the one without the electric trim, starter, and alternator, it would be around 100 pounds. It can be picked up by one person but watch your back, tighten your stomach, lift with legs and you'll be ok.
What in the heck?! Hmm......Did it tilt before? I'm starting to wonder of the bolt that holds the transom bracket is too tight? Ok, I have a 2nd channel where I do stuff like this. Gonna make you a quick clip to show you what I mean.

Great video as always, Erick. Did you get/run a tach with hour meter? When I got my 9.8 last year I also added a tach to measure rpm and hours to make sure break in was done right. How do you feel about carrying it? Using a dolly?
Thank you! I basically keep track of the time I use it in my head. It's not super accurate but close to it. It is heavy but not impossible. It's lighter than my old 9.9 Merc used to be. I think that one was close to 100 pounds. This one is about 84. I do store it on its own outboard stand.
Yes, the stock prop is 8.5x8. I think I could run a 8.5x9 for a bit more speed. I'm usually by myself on the boat so I think it's doable. In this video I was using the BB290
